Mitchell, will be in WA and CA in August, but not heading to the bay area this trip, Seattle for Gnomedex then LA for a couple of days, catching up with Sean Percival and playing tourist. There was a US$399 RT to New Zealand, but that's rare. Usually I can book my friends LA/SanJose/SF - Sydney off-season for US$900-1,100 with 2-3 month warning. United is doing US$1,243 RT LAX-SYD non-stops right now for August. (Qantas US$1,241 but has connections). Drop me a line if you want help finding fares. Flown 680,000 miles in the last 5 years. Ooooh. I see the problem. You guys are getting screwed. The LAX-SYD/MEL RTs are $1,229-1,243 and the SYD/MEL-LAX RTs are $2,000-2,200. Airlines should be shot for this type of discrimatory pricing. Lots of people on http://flyertalk.com doing weirdo trip planning to get around this. AKL-LAX (Auckland, NZ) is showing $1,550, but MEL-AKL trips are pricey (Do they ever drop?)
