Kevin, I'm working on getting mitchwagner.com (which I own) configured for e-mail. In my line of work, you want to have an e-mail address that you can say easily on the phone, and people can't figure out how to spell "wagmail."

We'll probably do that at some point, but I expect the weather to cool off soon enough, and Ill be able to walk outside any time of day. For now, if I don't get out by 10 am it's too hot afterward, and it's hard to get out by then.

Oh, I don't have a treadmill at home. I can use the one at the pool, but I'd only like that if I can look at pretty people.
- Admiral Anika
That's at least 25 minutes longer on the treadmill than I can do.

"Last week the folks at Tumblr hinted that some changes were coming for the platform, and the first signs of that are emerging with a huge update to how users can customise the look and feel of their Tumblogs. For the less-technical minded there's now support for customised fonts, and images in themes that can be edited directly within Tumblr's Customise window and if you're a code-minded user, then the new options for Booleans will definitely come in handy, Having built a fair few Tumblr themes myself over the last few years, there's new options are some great additions to my favourite blogging platform."

The survey, which I am prohibited from reproducing in full, asked the security professionals about the type of IT security threat that worries them most. 4% of the survey respondents chose the answer "Robotic threats, in which a race of androids replaces our leaders and takes over the Earth." Hmm...on second thought, maybe that 4% figure is refreshingly low!

You can't be too careful about robotic threats!

Remind me to tell you some time about the disaster recovery plan I was asked to create that included what to do in the event of The Rapture.
- Andy Bakun
Inasmuch as those who were left after the Rapture are assumed to be condemned, I assume the instructions were to just move all the software to the supercomputer in Brussels, put the mark on your forehead, and carry on. (Lutherans are amillennialists, so it's academic to me.)
- John E. Bredehoft
I'm already thinking of what to bring on trips on going on next year. I only want to take a carry-on. I figured I need at least 4 pairs of shoes for the various events and I wear a size 12! I'm going to need to get some really thin clothes, just to make space.
- Admiral Anika
How long will you be gone for? I'm traveling with three pairs of shoes for this two-day trip, including the pair on my feet right now.
- Mitch Wagner
from email
One trip is 3 days the other is 4 days. I figured for shoes I need dressy casual for the conference, my running shoes, heels for evening events and flip-flops for the pool.
- Admiral Anika
That's something like what I'm bringing for my two-day trip: Dressy for an evening event where I have to wear a suit, I'm wearing my dressy-casual shoes now, and exercise shoes. I don't expect to see the pool except for possibly going by it at a brisk walk.

OK, I'm hoping this is not TMI, but I'm Making A Point here: I'm Jewish, and like most Jewish men, I was circumcised when I was eight days old. I am sometimes asked my opinion on male circumcision, and whether it reduces sensation, etc. My response is always the same: I have absolutely no idea. I have nothing to compare it with.

I knew it was a tourist trap, but we really walked around and WOW that whole entire strip made me exceptionally cockpunchy. I have a weakness for watching tourists in areas like that, but it was really more than I could handle.
- Admiral Anika
Nice pics, Anika. We will be there in a week's time with our 3-year old. Will make sure to avoid this place. Anything else to avoid? And does one really need to have a sweater around (as some of my friends keep telling me)?
- Vinay | विनय
Well, I live in LA, so I've been freezing up here. I'd bring a light jacket, maybe a scarf/shawl. But you know what's funny. Yesterday I wore a tank top for most of the day. People who live here were scurrying to and from work in heavy wool jackets and scarves. Yet, I get mocked for saying it's cold. Other places to avoid...I don't know. I don't like touristy places and I loathe...

I suggest going to the Palace of Fine Arts. Walking around Berkeley is a always good. When I go places I tend to walk around neighborhoods and eat. So I know that walking around Tenderloin, I've found some great Pakistani restaurants. Breakfast in Pacific Heights is good. Lunch in the Mission area is passable. Walking about Chinatown and North Beach is always great for sensory overload....

We lived in San Francisco in the 90s, and I got back to visit occasionally, but I haven't been back in a couple of years. I always liked Union Square for, as you say, the people-watching. Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39 could be fun, but (as you say) a bit intense. When we lived there, the Tenderloin was scary. It wasn't just a bad neighborhood, it was dead, like it was abandoned. I miss...

A friend of mine went to law school at UC Hastings, and actually lived in the TL. It's probably not as bad as it used to be, but every time I would talk to him on the phone, there would be a siren in the background.

The Tenderloin is still just as bad. They love them some unsuspecting 1Ls. Anika, there's children's fairyland in Oakland, walking up telegraph in berkeley and seeing the street vendors (but school just started and shit is crowded.) The SF public library is a nice building to have a look at.
- Baroness Von SmashAHomie
Thanks, Kaia. We saw the Fairyland yesterday on our rushed auto tour of Oakland. My friend said, "Oh yeah, there's this in Oakland." *bitchlips* I asked her, "What the hell did you think I meant when I asked you want to do?" We are just wrapping up work and plan to walk about Oakland a bit before heading back to LA.
- Admiral Anika
If I didn't have a conference call coming up I'd offer to come play Oakland tour guide for y'all, Anika. Have fun (and an idea if you want to grab some road trip food - Bakesale Betty's has yummy fried chicken sandwiches).
- Maria Niles
Thanks for the tip, Maria. It seems we'll be coming back up soon. Considering how broke we are right now, I'm amazed we were able to pull this trip off. The kids like it up here and they like seeing old friends.
- Admiral Anika
Anika, that's how I felt about Fisherman's Wharf too. I didn't know about the sea lions before going there, so at least that came as a silver lining.
- Andrew C
Yeah, that was my 2nd time there. The first time was 6 years ago and we pretty much ate and left. I never understood why my friends up here talked crap about it. It just seemed like boardwalk park in Long Beach to me. Sure it's contrived and touristy, but whatever. Now, I understand their hatred. LOL

Timely thread. We're planning to go out to CA for a vacation sometime soon, so I'm going to keep this thread handy. So I live right next to F. Wharf, and I have to say, it's nice to be around smiling vacationing people. I also love the people watching. The rule is to stay relatively West/North. the south bit is over the top random. Also, just walk fast. The slow-walk of tourists drive sme nuts. Hyde St. Pier is fascinating to me, and Ghirardelli Square, the Cannery are kind of cute and nice. But it...

Maria, is Bakesale Betty's worth it? I have an aversion to sitting at an ironing board on the street. It's not kitschy enough for me to think it's cute. Or maybe I'm just a hater.

Kaia, it took me a long time to check it out but when friends were emailing me from NYC to say they wanted to come visit so they could go there, I finally did. It's really lame that I can't mention LA without getting spammed with some stupid site.
- Admiral Anika
This only seems to happen to me from Cournal. Are there others who target LA?
- Mitch Wagner

Yeah, I don't remember which ones now, but over the past year, I've probably blocked about 8 of them.
- Admiral Anika
I've blocked more people in the past few weeks than in the preceding year. Far more people. We seem to be hitting some kind of inflection point, and not a good one.
- Mitch Wagner
from email
Agreed. I'm so over the keyword-bots. I feel like I'm blocking them more often. It sucks for me because I don't visit the Twitter website that often. When I see my followers have jumped I realized it's mostly because of bots.
- Admiral Anika
I only block them if they spam me with an @mention. Other than that I don't feel the need to bother (and I'm vain and petty enough to like big follower numbers, even while I know it's meaningless).

Heh. Individual tolerance to temperature varies. A British friend was complaining about the excruciating hot weather on his blog. He gave the temps in Celsius, of course, so I had to convert with Google—when I did, I discovered the horrible tropical temperatures he was complaining about were low 70s F. He came to visit here in San Diego in late July one year, I'm surprised he survived.

Mitch, Buffy was kinda the same thing. Took a little while to find it's groove, then improved rapidly.

That's what I've heard from a lot of fans. I found the first episodes of Buffy enjoyable, although I watched them out of order–watched the last half of the third season first, then caught up with the first couple of seasons later.

"TweetDeck offers four major columns in which to organize Twitter data: "All Tweets", essentially your friends' timeline, "Replies", showing replies to you, the equivalent of Twitter's replies tab, "Search", which will keep a running search window open for a term you've selected, and "Group", which lets you make a sub-set of those you follow on Twitter, and make a miniature timeline" [This seems like a hardcore Twitter tool. Lots of windows and activity. Seems to occupy an entire screen.]

None of it will be wasted effort. Because a smart developer will see the larger vision of microblogging incl things like FF and identi.ca

from twhirl
Bwana, I still think there will be innovation, I just know a lot of frustrated developers and it can't last long if it's taking time and effort. I was simply sharing some real life examples of developers leaving the platform because of this. Truthfully, I'm actually developing my own Twitter apps on the side - you better believe that the non-Twitter systems are on the back of my mind, and will be a backup though. I could pull away from Twitter at any time, and I'm sure they could as well.

Been using this a few minutes now - I like it a lot. I'm one of those people who subscribes to hundreds and hundreds of tweets -- more than I can possibly keep up with.
