Very handy for using a GPS in a borrowed vehicle. Just plonk this heavy thing down, clip on the GPS, and go. No need to fiddle with suction cups and such.

I've already downloaded the SDK. But there's a bit of a learning curve to overcome. If anyone has any suggestions on good Android programming resources (other than Google's site), please let me know. I wouldn't even mind killing a few trees for a book.
- Jason Huebel
I find http://www.androidsnippets.org useful for learn-by-example stuff. Also, the API demos that come with the SDK. The Google docs have improved quite a bit over the course of this year. They are definately a good starting point for the high level fundemental stuff.

Oh, BTW, great review Jason. Almost makes me want to trade up my ADP-1 for a Droid, since it sounds like an excellent device. Will be interested to know what the average battery life is, and if it has suffered by giving this phone a much larger screen & faster CPU.
- Andrew Perry
from Android
Well, I charged yesterday morning, used the phone all day and didn't charge over night. I'm at >50% battery power. I've done a little power management, so YMMV. So that's about 28 hours without charging.

More regarding battery life: the Droid recharges very slowly. Maybe that and the relatively long battery life indicates a larger battery? Anybody know?
- Jason Huebel

it might also explain the additional weight of the phone.

@Jason its a 1400 mAh battery. life of it seems to depend on what you are doing.
- Matt Ellsworth
Yeah, I'm realistic about how long the battery will last. If I'm playing MP3's and talking on the phone, I expect decent battery life. But if I'm watching videos, I don't expect more than a few hours, max.
- Jason Huebel
By these reports, it certainly doesn't sound any _worse_ the the HTC Dream / T-Mobile G1 battery life. Possibly a little better, which is quite impressive considering it's got more CPU grunt and a much bigger screen.
- Andrew Perry
The Droid's capacity is certainly bigger. The stock G1 battery is 1150 mAh. How the Droid uses the battery is another factor, though.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
Jason, thanks for the review. I'm an IT admin trying to justify getting a Droid over a Blackberry to my boss. Can you see any points that would favor the Droid? We're a MS Exchange shop, so was wondering if you tested that. Any other comments would be appreciated. Direct msg me, if you like.

Well, Android has built in Exchange mail and Calendar support. Last I checked, Blackberries require a BB Enterprise server for full Exchange support. Also, Android is easier to develop for than Blackberry. Even at this early stage, Android has surpassed Blackberry from an apps standpoint.

Jason: To quick charge your phone turn it off and it'll charge in about 30-45 mins depending on how dead it was. Works like a charm on my G1.

I'd hoped that Drobo would be more reliable than my own raid...
- Kevin Fox
Can you swap out new hard drives in a Drobo?
- Jesse Stay
I like Mozy, but I don't know how much I can trust a small company offering 'unlimited storage' for a low price. I feel it's more likely that in 10 years my 1TB drive in a vault will still be readable than Mozy will still be in business.
- Kevin Fox
small? They're owned by EMC I thought.
- Jesse Stay
Just buy a couple 1TB USB HD's and keep one as the working disk and the second as a mirror backup. If you are really paranoid, buy a third drive and do a periodic backup or sync to it and keep it off site. Use any number of automated backup or sync software packages set to run on a daily basis.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Jeff, that's my inclination, mostlikely. Mirror or raid locally, off-site backups. Archives are my biggest concern. Terabytes of photos that don't need to be available, but can't be forgotten in a closet where hard disks go to fade away or obsolesce themselves (Firewire? What's that?).
- Kevin Fox
Jesse, okay, so perhaps they're not small, but I doubt their 'unlimited' will support a terabyte or two, when their business tier charges $0.50 a gig per month (unclear whether that's per gig of added storage or per gig of total storage. S3 charges $0.15 per gig of total.)
- Kevin Fox
You can swap out new drives in a Drobo. If one goes bad you can hot-swap it with a new one and pretty lights tell you when the new one is synced up. The problem is that I've never had it tell me that a drive's gone bd. It's always more fundamental problem like an inability to mount the combined volume or Disk First Aid (which Drobo recommends using) tells me the 'drive' is so messed up...

Not trying to dissuade you from the local solution (I think it's probably the best one) but just wanted to mention that the "unlimited" model is based on the assumption that only a few users really take advantage of it. Kevin from your description it sounds like you had a drive integrity failure that your drobo didn't notice until you went to use it.

Scott, the sad thing is that the Drobo *still* hasn't noticed. MacOS is the one telling me about these problems while the Drobo Dashboard thinks everything's peachy. I'd be tickled pink if Drobo threw up a red light and said 'this one drive is bad' because then it would be working as it should and I could just swap the drive with a new one and maintain data integrity, but as it is I'm probably screwed.
- Kevin Fox
Even with something like RAID, ZFS, or a Drobo, isn't it possible for data to become corrupted without there being a problem with a drive? I.e. cant an app or the OS still just muck up a file?

I'd start to be wary of standard RAID with today's drive capacities. The chances of a second drive failure while resyncing after a first are much higher now that they were with 500GB drives. Benjamin, Michael Herf wrote about his ZFS setup here: http://www.nerdblog.com/2009... I run OpenSolaris on an MSI Wind PC w/ two 1TB drives. The configuration cost $350 from NewEgg. It took me a couple of hours to figure out how to configure ZFS, setup snapshots and run scrub.
- Gary Burd
Search my posts for zfs for a link on how to configure a mirrored root partition. It is a little complicated. My soln was more $ because of more ram, ecc, more CPU and 4 drives. I picked the motherboard mike herf lists on his blog.

You can make a Linux RAID scrub weekly too - just schedule it ("echo check > /sys/block/md0/md/sync_action"). Also, the Intel SS4200E is $200 and apparently has EMC software: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews.... Personally, I'm happy with ZFS, it's not too hard to learn the admin stuff.
- Michael Herf
Also, Time Machine seems half-allergic to NAS. You can make it work but it fails randomly later. I guess you could try iSCSI and format HFS+? To fix this, you can also look for one of the RAID-1 enclosures that do attached eSATA and just plug a couple drives in. Not foolproof, but at least it supports Time Machine reasonably well (think one of my friends has the "Raidon" brand.)
- Michael Herf
Michael, thanks for the ZFS writeup, really helpful. I like the idea of a really low cost, low power setup based on Atom.

Adding one more thing to this mega-thread - you can do free remote backup between two of your machines, by putting the 2nd machine at a friend's house, then using CrashPlan: http://www.crashplan.com. It's also nice that you now have 24.5 days to fix the bug :)
- Benjamin Golub
I really, really, want more information on how this bug works. Timestamp + rounding = error in autofocus? Come on, that has got to be some crazy shit right there.
- Otto
Yeah, worked that one out. By treating an unsigned 32 bit millisecond timestamp as signed, you could get negatives for 24.8 days then positives for 24.8 after that. But why would an autofocus routine need a timestamp anyway? That one I'm confused about.
- Otto
Well whether it was firmware bug or an update... it didn't work yesterday and works now... so thats good
- Matt Ellsworth
Hah. I get it now. It's a difference problem. Basically, you focus by measuring something across a period of time (a few milliseconds). By subtracting the times between two measurements, you get some kind of difference that lets the camera adjust some amount. But when you're using a signed vs. an unsigned, the difference that you expected to be positive comes back negative, and throws your algorithm into the crapper. Voila, broken half the time. Fix is probably just to switch some code to unsigned properly.

If you had the choice between the 5 Qt KitchenAid Artisan stand mixer that has 325 watts of power (usually sold by Macys for $299) or the 5 Qt KitchenAid Pro model that is 475 watts of power (usually sold by Costco for $299) which would you choose? Does the power make that much of a difference?
Come now Alex, it's always the one with MOAR POWER
- Mo Kargas
Watts are really a measure of power used, but the Pro models are awfully nice.
- ha3rvey (chee-la-key-les)
As a side effect, more wattage usually means a bigger, beefier motor. Bigger electric motors usually last longer and have more torque. DO IT.
- ha3rvey (chee-la-key-les)
Why would you get the lower power version? Because you want to buy it on credit? Because it comes in more colors? All of their mixers use the same attachments, so that's not it.
- Alex Scoble
I think you'd usually buy the lower power version because it's often cheaper.
- Rochelle
If you can get a more powerful mixer for the same price, why even ask? Are there any other major differences between the Artisan and Pro models?
- Curtiss Grymala
Yeah, that's not exactly credit card openness. :)

It's not openness, but it's available. You could always use a cash-advance check from your credit card company if you want more options. :)

I just used mine the other night. I love it, but daggone it's heavy. It's the kind of thing where you really need to have space on your counter just to leave it there (ours, regrettably, is stored under the cabinet unless we're actually using it).
- Curtiss Grymala
Alex, for many things it doesn't matter much, but for dough (especially larger quantities) it really does. The lower powered model will probably struggle a bit mixing up a double batch of chocolate chip cookies for example. If you think larger dough quantities are something you'd like to be able to handle, You might consider something like the Cuisinart 1000w model instead: http://www.cuisinartstandmixer.com/info...

Oh, and some kind of a 'splash guard' will be invaluable. Check to see if one is included/available.

I think I have the Artisan but I thought I had the same model as Rochelle so maybe not. I'm not familiar with what Pro model you're looking at that is the same size, but when we were looking at mixers (and ultimately, mine was a gift so I'm not sure what decision-making went into the choice), I wanted something a bit smaller so that I could keep it on the counter and I liked the shape...

I have a Pro, but I've had it for 5 years so may not have the same amount of power. I LOVE it! We choose the Pro over the Artisan because we like the action of the angled lift better than the raised lift. Most people I know choose the Artisan though. Thing is though that I have never met anyone who has either the Pro or Artisan that doesn't love it!!
- Rachel Lea Fox
Go for the Pro model. The extra power will make kneading large amounts of dough a lot easier. The lift bowl is also better.
- Sparky
I have Baking Illustrated and they suggest just getting the 4.5 quart standing mixer if you are a home baker.
- Anna Lynn M.
I don't think that KitchenAid even makes a 4.5 quart dealy anymore.

We have the Artisan and it works great, but I would go with more power if it's the same price.
- Shannon Jiménez
I almost killed my roommate's 375W Kitchen Aid with a particularly thick batch of cookie dough a year or so ago (I did pay to get it fixed) - the repair guy mentioned that the more powerful model wouldn't have had a problem. I'd go Pro if they're roughly the same price.
- Jennifer Dittrich
I have the Epicurean 475W which they don't make anymore. Got it through Amazon using part of my *whispers* School loan way back when. I wanted it because it lifted up and down as opposed to tilting back. I do love it though.

Not sure, but I would think that more power would be a better thing.
- Martha
More power - it makes a difference if you are mixing thick doughs, bread doughs, etc., or if you are running it for a long time. Also, make sure you get one with a large mixing bowl/container. You'll want it if you ever make a larger recipe.
- Katy S
YES. GET THE 475 WATT ONE!!! Trust me: I use mine for bread dough, cookie dough, and other heavy-duty mixing/kneading jobs. MOAR POWER = AWSUMMER MIXER.
- Ladybug Heather
I have the 4.5 stand mixer and it's good for most things, but last night, it didn't really handle a double-batch of peanut butter cookie dough. I'd go for more power and getting a bigger bowl. I actually need to acquire a second bowl because I'm sick of washing it in between mixing cake batter and icing. All else being equal, go for the luxury model.
- Sally: gift wrapper
We have the same one as Derrick. It says Epicurean on it, but seriously don't remember the wattage. Josh got it for me for Valentine's Day one year. Best. Gift. Ever.

This is going to be incredibly useful for Picasa. Now I think I could actually store originals there.
- Joel Webber
Considering the SmugMug, etc., were offering $40/year for unlimited storage, I think $5/year for 20GB is quite reasonable, not "surprisingly cheap". I was going to migrate from Picasa to Smugmug, but this just made it unnecessary.
- Piaw Na
why to pay $40 to Picasa if you could get unlimited storage from flickr for $25?
- earlyadopter
Thats getting fairly close to the retail cost of the drives. I can get an 1T drive at frys for around $80. Thats 8c/GB or $1.60 for 20GB. To have the data in 3 places (to get somewhere near the low risk of loss that google is offering), that would be $4.80. I'm still not considering the cost of the other hardware since to get the same low risk of loss, I'd need more than one machine - geographically distributed.
- Greg Grothaus
Because Flickr has a nasty habit of deleting people's accounts without warning? Also I'm guessing that Flickr's "unlimited" may not turn out to be that way in practice. I actually feel a little more comfortable paying something for the storage, so that the company doing the storing has an incentive to keep providing the service.
- Joel Webber
@Greg: Your prices are too high. Nowadays, 1.5TB drives are gotten at around $90. And obviously, Google can buy drives in bulk and drive costs down below what you can do by buying at Fry's.
- Piaw Na
And you have to consider the price of multiple drives for availability, backup, power, network connectivity, etc. I can't speak to Google's costs, but it sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I'll be quite happy to no longer fear having to tell my wife "Remember how I said our family pictures were all safe on my backup hard drive? Well a funny thing happened with that...". I trust Google to do backups a lot better than I ever will :)
- Joel Webber
I pay $50/year for MozyHome to back up everything on my drives. While I trust Google with backups, pictures aren't the only thing that is valuable.

"Until battery technology changes to double or triple capacity, you will have to change your charging habits to fit the needs of the smartphone. That hasn't been my experience. I made it all day yesterday without having to recharge. I didn't recharge overnight either. And my phone kept going with quick little car charges throughout the day today while I was running errands. Battery life isn't any worse than the iPhone.
- Jason Huebel
And they say "change habits to fit the needs of /THE/ smartphone". So they aren't saying that this is limited to the Droid. Phones are eating up more and more power as they essentially become hand-held computers.
- Jason Huebel
I think the more intelligent strategy is to better optimize your power management on your device. For instance, I manage which features are enabled (GPS, wifi, email syncing and screen brightness) using Android's Power Control widget. Just adjusting the screen brightness to 50% (which is still very readable indoors) makes a huge difference in battery life.

As someone who has has many Smartphones (PalmOS and WinMob, soon Droid this week), I have come to expect poor battery life with the standard battery. BUT this is the key to removable batteries. A larger battery will come to the Droid, they usually add some weight and a little bulk but have never truly ruined my experience (besides the quest for the perfect case).

On my iPhone I use this (http://bit.ly/3ZEfsF) to double the capacity. Droid needs a similar external battery, that preserve the internal battery, that will works only when that is empty (and physically detached)

from fftogo
I hope some of these ideas work. I got a droid and it is killer to batteries... but perhaps it just needs to go through some cycling to get it to work better.
- Matt Ellsworth
@Matt, the best thing you can do is have the screen turn off sooner and adjust the screen brightness to stay at 50%. Unless you use your phone outside a lot, you won't need it any brighter, IMO. But if you do go outside, the Power Control widget allows you to increase the brightness to 100% with a single tap. Then when you go back inside, you can adjust back to 50% with a couple more taps.
- Jason Huebel
@jason -- cool I'll give that a shot - I tried to turn on the auto screen dimmer thing - not so sure about that... and have the screen set to turn off after 30 seconds instead of 1 min.

BTW, I had no idea the scams were this bad. I have friends who work at some of the "bad" gaming companies named here.

Maybe this is part of the reason that Apple is so restrictive about iPhone apps.
- Robert Felty
Robert, Apple's review process can't discover apps that do this -- they can't tell whether the ad unit that shows a legitimate ad during the review process suddenly starts showing scammy lead-gen a week later. I'd look at it a different way: scammy lead-gen shows up everywhere that content providers don't attach value to having a satisfied user (email spam, search engine spam, etc.). The best way for FB to avoid this is to make their platform useful for nontrivial app authors. Looks like they're trying...
- Daniel Dulitz
Good point Daniel. It seems like it is a pretty difficult thing to police. Maybe they could create a blacklist of advertisers.
- Robert Felty
Its not always the advertisers, its how the offers are presented. Tatto Media suggested we block people from seeing more than 3 articles on our site without forcing the user to fill out an offer of their choice. Of course we didn't implement this and it wouldn't drive the user experience we are looking for.
