Hey guys, keep in mind that Facebook is blocked in workplaces across the nation. 250 million casual users commenting about last night's party does not intelligent conversation make. - Hector

this is simply awful. - Big Joe Silenced
Painful. And apparently I completely misunderstood what FF was trying to accomplish both technically and as an organization. I guess Facebook must have dangled a pretty big bag of money in front of them. - Ken Sheppardson

damn Ken is spot on! +1000 Ken! - vijay
not good. - Jacque
Oh. My. Gosh. - Enrico L
Facebook obviously liked FriendFeed a long time ago. Why would they have copied so many features (feed item comments and the "Like" action, to name a couple) otherwise? It was only logical for this to happen eventually. Doesn't mean I like it, but acquisition is part of the game. I have the same feeling I did when SocialThing! was acquired by AOL, though. - dgw
"Relationship Status: It's complicated" comes to mind. ;) - Tyson Key
Wow, I finally sign up, and read this. This could end up being a very bad thing for FF fans: "Your FriendFeed friend just signed up on this poll, would you like to too?" - Brian Bommarito

"Were rich B!tch!" - Chappelle - adolfo foronda
What a bunch of greedy assholes. - zio bodhisattva
Does this mean that we'll be seeing an influx of webcam spammers, a la Twitter? Along with abolishment of the rooms feature, crappification of the search feature, and more "privacy features" that really just put more nails in the openness coffin? - Tyson Key
Some people will do whatever their friends request........ - Michael Muller
I really don't see why people would be anything but excited about this Facebook freindfeed deal. Great news as far as I am concerned. The Friend feed team is going to go over facebook and make it that much easier to connect, share... isn't that what the social web is about? - Kevin Murray
I know a lot of people who use Facebook and enjoy it and that's fair enough. It's just not my cup of tea. The chaps from Friendfeed will get rich and the technology will get absorbed in Facebook but I can't see Friendfeed continuing in anything like it's present form. - Paul Nash
Don't be so negative, something good might eventually come of this... - Tarmo Aidantausta
Congrats! I know you all must be crazy excited right now. - Michele Lorito-Chase
chance for FriendFeed to become more mainstream... congrats FriendFeed team! - Jeroen De Miranda
Nothing could make me happier than if they integrated the good tools from FriendFeed into Facebook, which is where all my friends are. So a big "yay!" from me. - Ian Betteridge
happy for you guys, but not for all of us - Flavio
congratulations. this is going to be interesting. - Dave Beckett
I think I preferred the non-mainstream version of FriendFeed... - Tyson Key

What happens to all the content that we've created and imported here, and the associated metadata? Will all that disappear into the ether? - Tyson Key
If the FriendFeed guys can make FaceBook useful and responsive again, this seems like a pretty positive step! - Robin Barooah
I have big loss of data concerns. See Is there any way to archive all my FriendFeed posts, likes, comments, and pictures ( off-line? Can some snapshots of FriendFeed be made (Once a month starting Sept 2009)? I'd like to see the cross-links between my posts & other people's posts, even in 2020. - - Mitchell Tsai
Mitchell: the FriendFeed site is not shutting down. Your data will not go away any time in the near term future - we are committed to our users. - Bret Taylor
I just overheard a coworker mention FriendFeed. This is how the world ends... - CannonGod
Then provide us with a way to easily make a back-up of all of our posts and all of the posts we have Liked and Commented on. - Akiva
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want it to be handed off to Facebook. - zio bodhisattva
Near term future? - Kol Tregaskes
I don't see good things coming from this. Although I like Facebook, I liked Friendfeed more. Partly because of the environment and the smallness of it. That is now going to be ruined. So, 10-1 odds that Friendfeed will be no more within a year after it gets intergrated into Facebook? - Mathew™ aka Youngblood
I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck. - Jim #teamFFrank
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want anything to be handed off to Facebook. And I don't want to lose anything. - zio bodhisattva
Congrats obviously, but im not sure about the feeling,, different user groups which can not integrate but collide.. hope there wont be an huge integration in the future. - Yunus Tunak
I'm happy for FriendFeed! But, at the same time a bit worried about the future. Hope you guys convince FB to not be evil too. - Vishal Verma
Let's hope this is like Disney's acquisition of Pixar - wherein the Pixar guys ended up in control of the animation studio... - Robin Barooah from IM
Where the f*ck is this option to undo ? - Laurent

Does anyone want to start a bounty to purchase Facebook? ;) - Tyson Key
Congratulations! - John Craft
can't be, shouldn't be... - Kemal Y.
It is! Change is inevitable, my friends. - Bill Sodeman
Jim, I'm less cynical than you - the FriendFeed founders wouldn't do this just in order to become 'talent' at FaceBook. - Robin Barooah
I feel if I should be wearing a black arm band. But I guess when I think about it.............. - Kevin J Hatton
Oh No! I don't like this at all :( - Peter
I still think Apple will acquire Facebook, Twitter Friendfeed and Google Twitter. - Thomas Power
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! - Stephen Francoeur
My condolences to all Friendfeeders! RIP! - Evgeni Leshtanski
AAAAwwwful! - carolh
I can't believe it! damn! facebook tos will apply to friendfeed too? should i start to move to another service? why anyone would think that facebook public is friendfeed public?! damn! friedfeed was my favorite! I can't understand this move! they want to kill friendfeed or what? - paula simoes ☃
"I bet I can find 1.000.0000 people who dislike this deal."...Welcome to FriendBook. - Jacque
Well, huge congraulations to you and your team, you deserve every success. To be honest I had presumed this would happen sooner or later - the only business model cool little startups have is to hope they get bought by someone bigger for their brains and technology. I'm going to be in San Francisco in a couple of weeks and was going to stop by your office to bring you a cake and thank you for a great product - maybe I still will if you're still there and there's still a FriendFeed! - Alex Lomas
damn, damn, damn... - Kemal Y.
Grats Bret and the rest of FF. To all the naysayers... Lets see what happens before we start bitching.... - Rasmus Lauridsen
wow!! dazed and confused!! - Roberto Arancibia
I don't hate Facebook, but for sharing things Friendfeed is MUCH MUCH better! - Mathew™ aka Youngblood
I wonder if that Ben Darnell guy who *just* left the Google reader team knew about this beforehand? Wonder what he's thinking now? ( - Daniel J. Pritchett
Just great. I'm certainly not very happy about this. Let's just hope FB doesn't ruin FF. Ugh. - axolote
Who cares? Nothing's gonna change in our pitiful lifes. - bluretina
This ties in nicely with the fact that you soon will have the opportunity to make your Facebook profiles public and get followers there. - Michael Netsch
чатег номер два - старина хэнк
Congrats Bret! this is so great! many congrats!!! - Jason Pollock
Is it April 1st somewhere in the universe? - Robert Felty
#ROFLMAO Is there anything more important than money? It seems NOT #ROFLMAO - Lora Lufark
I don't mean to be negative but there's got to be a win-win logic to each merger&acquisiton. Audience high in only quantity is clearly not a win for friendfeed in the long term by considering its unique selling points. Let's wait and see who will benefit from friendfeed's death now. - ayca
Seriously, what is this? It's like Bret just announced that he's killed all your mothers or something. It could turn out good, it could turn out bad, but at the end of the day, who cares, it's just a website (I mean honestly, come on). I could see it going either way, but in the near term, this is a pretty big win for the FF team, so congrats guys. - Chieze Okoye
OMG! - keso
To be honest, my heart sank a little but I am happy to congratulate you and the team for building such a good brand. Well done. - Kevin J Hatton
Wow, I specifically use friendfeed b/c it is not facebook. Sounds great for the friendfeed team, but not necessarily for friendfeed users. - Evan Parker
Born to be sold, like in the old "new economy" era. Remember the late nineties? - Federico Bolsoman
Sudden desire to check out Strands again... but hey, kudos on the incoming $$ for FF team - Leslie Poston
This is wisdom. Bracing for Google Wave is a good idea............. - Kevin J Hatton
this is clearly a talent aquisition... why am i not excited about this? could it be because facebook has been blatantly stealing features from friendfeed shamelessly. Likes were clearly not an original facebook idea...realtime feeds is another i could go on... - Tate
While I'm sad, because I suspect this means the best things about FF will disappear or I'll be forced to use FB in some way, if the buyout was for some awesome amount of money, I can't say I blame 'em for taking an offer -- I would. - Andy Bakun
I came to FriendFeed because I don't like facebook. Now the question is, will facebook become more like friend feed? or will they just take friend feed and turn it into facebook? - Tom Ray
FF could be a good R&D arm for facebook. - Andy Bakun
Fucking morons. FriendFeed is doomed now. Think logically. Facebook has NO REASON to keep FriendFeed alive. It will simply take FF's best features, suck the life of out of it, then trash FF. Way to go, FirnedFeed, damn. - Jeremy Buff
Big Fail! - onurc
This announcement should have been held off until the plans for Friendfeed were known. Regardless, this is *bad* for FF users. Best case: it continues on, but with stagnated feature development. Worst case: it's gone. - tollie williams
wtf ?! - Umut Balkan
I need to install "super PUKE" application ! - Bart LePoole
FFail. - rowlikeagirl
I don't want my FF feed on Facebook :( I use both, but maintain both profiles separate - Leandro Ardissone ⍨
Sigh... Happy for the team if this is what they want, but baffled by the move. The users that are going to leave because of this will make FF a graveyard and the users it gains, well... Hello spam? Sorry, but I don't like it. - Vince DeGeorge from iPhone
JEREMY+++++1 - AlpB.
Wow! - felix
Jeremy +1 - batuhan
so what's next? where should we go? - Flavio
It's been fun here. - Capn' One Eye - adrift
Dang, and just as I was starting to get used to how FF works. FF is useful on it's own. I hope this only improves FF's system, rather than having it disappear into Facebook's wake. - Don Faulkner
furthermore they are 2 different things: I follow a lot of people here that are not in my facebook list, which is for IRL friends! - Flavio
I don't know where to go next either. I had just settled down to make imaginary friends for all my non-FF tweeps, etc. now, I'm not sure if I should bother. - Don Faulkner from IM
I hope friendfeed continues to operate normally but it does not look good. - Ashish
integrate best features of ff to fb, then try to innovate in fb if possible, then kill ff... that's it, cheers, all the best. grrrr... - Kemal Y.
niczak has good points. FF & FB aren't exactly competitors, but they aren't orthogonal either. Let's hope FB's smart enough to see the difference and improve both platforms. - Don Faulkner from IM
Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline. - Ken Sheppardson
first (heard about it yesterday), now this. I wasn't a heavy user (yet), but sad to see it go, even if I think url shortening is silly. - Don Faulkner from IM
As FB said they're interested in the people and not in the site, what if the community will keep running FF without its current staff? - Flavio
Congratulations! - Sam Grover
rutgerblom, I don't expect they do either, thus my angst over this. - Don Faulkner from IM
if there's a team willing to do it and money, and if we accept some ads as everywhere else, we could make a new FF without FB - Flavio
I have worked hard in avoiding signing up for FB. Does this mean I now automatically will be on FB by virtue of my FF account? - Tony Vota from iPhone
I'll have to go with Flavio's position too. Given this news (plus and who knows who's next), I'd tend to favor community supported or federated services for things like this in the future. - Don Faulkner from IM
I am purposely not on facebook because I don't really want to talk to people I have not talked to in 20 years. - Andy Bakun
Congrat Bret!! :)) - Cihan Cepni
trouble is (from my perspective), that the philosophies of the two platforms are at odds. FB wants to bring people to the site and keep them there, while FF is a hub, bringing people in and then sending them back out. (That's part of why it's hard for the newcomer to understand, IMHO.) - Don Faulkner from IM
This almost confirms FF will disappear: - Kol Tregaskes
Does this mean I can throw someone a sheep on FriendFeed now? - Pinksy
I sure hope so, Rutger. I glad for their success too. I just hope there's a next best thing out there for us. - Don Faulkner from IM
Congrats all. Nice work, in spite of any naysaying out there. Keep up the innovation. - Tomas Remotigue
lame. - andy brudtkuhl
post the picture to failblog... - Kemal Y.
Quote «Taylor and Cox say that the Friendfeed product will live on independently, and eventually Friendfeed will be merged into Facebook. But the Friendfeed team is not being kept whole. Some employees will now report to Cox, others to engineering head Mike Schroepfer. In my opinion that means, long term, the Friendfeed product itself is unlikely to be a big priority.¶ But Facebook is... more... - Philipp Lenssen
+1 Kol for the techcrunch article! - Don Faulkner from IM
techcrunch: "Cox agreed, noting that Facebook is focused on being a platform and a service, and not just a destination site." I certainly hope so! - Don Faulkner from IM
Brilliant move by both Facebook and friendfeed. Congratulations!!! I have theories of what they have planned, but I doubt you would verify any of them. This is going to go so well with their SocialTV which they have been developing. I'm so happy for you! - Michael Fidler
Really saddened by this news. - Doug Beeferman
Noooooooooooooooooooooo! - Zulkarnain K.
I don't see what's so bad about it since no one knows right now what the outcome will be, everyone is just making assumptions that could possibly be wrong..... Might help just sitting back and seeing what happens first before complaining. - ChaCha Fance
Nooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrghh! I´ve resisted getting a facebook acct for so long... - ɯɥøq sɐɯoɥʇ
I wonder how the discussion over on facebook would compare to this? - Don Faulkner from IM

Congrats, FF! I'm approaching the situation with cautious optimism. @Javier I guess it depends as to the person's motive why he/she is posting it. I think the majority of the people (not going to say everyone cause you never know) are forwarding it so people can see that there is more to the story. The first time I saw the video on here was a Persian FFer, and I don't think she posted it for the shock factor. I think it's so everyone can understand what is going on. - Shevonne
Javier: I think the importance of this video is to help us conceive of the horror on an individual level. It's so easy to say Iran, Iranians, Iranian Government - to coalesce these ideas into an oversimplified whole. Those oversimplifications allow concepts like "Axis of Evil" to exist. When you are confronted with the harsh reality on a personal level, it's harder to ignore that these are individuals like us with families and friends, who are suffering at this moment. - Chip Ramsey
Shevonne makes a good point; there is so much disinformation flying around people post pics and vids as 'proof' to the outside world of their actual situation. For example: several hours ago there were reports of a bomb at the tomb of the last Ayatollah but not one pic or vid. - Anita Hunt
Shevonne: True, I'm not saying people posting it are all doing it out of a morbid sense of entertainment. I just think it's redundant. Maybe I'm too much of an optimist, but I want to believe that people don't need to be shown this kind of horror to understand it. Then again, that's just me. - Javier Altman
Chip: I'd hate to think that people need to be shown this horror on a personal level to understand how it works, what it is and what implications it has. I don't have to show you a video of me killing your dog so that you'll understand how much you'll suffer if I actually go and kill your dog. Aren't we smarter than that? Oversimplifications do exist and they suck, I'm not going to... more... - Javier Altman

It is a difficult clip to watch - it makes me feel helpless. I pray for those in Iran fighting for their freedom. - Robert Freeze
we need something more than pray :| - Shandiz
Javier: I understand your point and wish that were the case. Let me put it this way, I will be going over to a friend's house in an hour or so. Most of the people there will not be talking about Iran, nor will they care to talk about Iran. 1) because they have negative preconceptions of the region and 2) because they don't want to talk about anything that makes them uncomfortable. This has been going on for me at work as well. My experience has been that very few people are really paying attention. - Chip Ramsey
@Chris: we need to be heard as much as possible throughout the world. we can't just rely on BBC/ CCN or other news networks! - Shandiz
Chip: But that's life, for the most part. People generally don't care about things that don't affect them directly. Showing a video won't change that, it'll only make them want to stay away even more -- if they are uncomfortable talking about it, be jumping of joy at the idea of watching a video of something like this, don't you think? - Javier Altman
Javier: My point is you can't ignore the video. You can't shake the video. But, you can easily ignore my desire to talk about the situation at a party. You can easily ignore Anderson Cooper on CNN running a 5 minute news story about Iran tucked between stories about legalizing marijuana and a celebrity couple getting a divorce. - Chip Ramsey
just saw the video, may her soul rest in peace and her death not be in vain. I really feel for all the poeple in iran, that there rights to choose for a president are being ignored, and their protests being beaten down.. shame to you ahmejinejad.. excuse my spelling - Sebastiaan van den Akker
Chip: It's true, you can't shake the video that easily, and I suppose the rest of your argument holds water as well. One thing though, even if you make these people who obviously don't want to get involved at least be aware of the situation, what do we gain? These people are not the ones who are going to go out of their way to complain, to participate, to make an effort from their own... more... - Javier Altman
The video has been published on Facebook with a brief description of the incident that ends with the words, "The film is shot by my friend who was standing beside me. Please let the world know." Initially I was against such footage being shown but if such a video makes the world take notice then so be it. - Chris Marshall
Chip: maybe you could wear green to the party ;) - Anita Hunt
Javier: It becomes a matter of peer pressure. An exercise in social psychology. We see it happen every day with politicians and religious leaders. Once a story gets promoted to a certain level, even the people on the sidelines get involved. Anita: Good idea, but that may clash with what my wife is wearing. (joke) - Chip Ramsey
Chip: It usually happens when it affects that person's own community or country at most. It's rare that the people in the sidelines get involved with something that is so foreign to them. Still, I honestly hope you are right. - Javier Altman

If not, why are there no tears for fellow Americans: Katrina survivors, homeless, unemployed, etc.?! We all know the agenda is to instill a gov of our choosing. What... more... - Moushumi Kabir

Moushumi: I agree with you about the desire to interfere (by politicians/military) when we have plenty of issues at home. However, the people here have the desire for the people of Iran to have the same freedoms and voice that we have here. It is our duty to stand with them, and encourage them. I want my fellow Americans to channel their energies in solving domestic crisis, health coverage for ALL Americans, jobs created for the rising unemployed. I want solidarity with these issues not the internal politics of a nation I've absolutely no right over. It's that simple. - Moushumi Kabir
Want or not, your government is going to continue to worry about international issues. Want or not, your country is on the brink of military incursion into Iran. Would you rather that? Moushumi: well said. That's why I totally disagree with USA Republicans who are pushing Obama to do more. He has been perfect on this issue and should stay as quiet as possible. I have to agree with Robert - The LAST thing I want to see in this is US military involvement. Whether that is to step in and be "peacekeepers" or to step in to overthrow the current regime, I don't think that these are admirable or desirable goals. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
And Moushumi, I don't understand why you think that supporting the people's right to be heard is hypocritical, or objectionable. I do not advocate violence, and I do not advocate military conflicts. Robert, Rob, I agree with you. As we got nearly the same problem in Madagascar: US, South Africa, other Africans, France (?) military involvement and so on! Believe me, pple just wanna live in -peace-, and those kind of unhealthy buzzes and wishes are simply inadmissible! - Thierry R. Andriamirado
The Iranian people don't need me to speak for them. But I am happy to help them have the means, and carry their message further. They don't need a "twitter revolution" but if there is revolution, the news of it won't be on CNN, and it won't be in the New York Times, or even on al Jazeera - at least not the news of it happening while it happens. That news will be on twitter, and on FriendFeed. I support people delivering the news. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Also: I truly believe that thought and words carry the ultimate power. If we all sit here and think about, and talk about violence as a solution, it will come to that. If we all sit and think about, and talk about the power of speech over the power of guns, that is what will come to be. Support speech with me. And remember Moushimi, supporting speech is not the same as taking sides. I would support both sides' rights to speak. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Robert I respectfully disagree. The us is the home And beacon of freedom loving people everywhere. It seems to me that most of the protestors want a strong show of support from the us administration. The eu has been much for forceful in their condemnation of the regimes behavior. I am a proud republican and want Obama to so much much more than he has. Like it or not we are accused of meddling anyway so we may as well truly meddle. - Zachary Adam Cohen
Rob, you said it all! US and European governments can't continue to 'ignore' facts and truths spread on the Internet when their own people are buzzing about them. How can we help? Putting pressure on the US government to strongly condemn the Iranian government's action seems like the right thing to do, but is that really what the Iranian people want? Do they really care what our government says? Would that type of "help" just make things worse for them? - Chip Ramsey
Chip: that would be a major mistake because then the government of Iran could paint the protesters as being "Pro American" which would lose them major internal support. - Robert Scoble
The prayers of all freedom-loving people are with the Iranians now. For us, this is an exercise in ethics. For those in Iran, it is an exercise in life and death. May God show His mercy and guidance to those protesting - and those currently in power. It is God's desire that His children would love one another (in His name) and not hurt one another (in His name). If we would focus on our God and not ourselves, then we might have a chance to live in peace. - Lorin Olsen
Wow, way to twist the thread, Lorin. But you're right; people in the middle east, especially Iran, don't focus enough on religion, and if they would just believe in whatever you believe, everything would be okay. - Bill Jackson

It's a great answer to people who ask for ROI of social media. - Robert Scoble
Great response! - MiaD
His comment is particularly insightful because it touches on the "how to measure social media success" issue. - Rick Bucich
sweet question! love it! - Susan Beebe
ROI of a hug is warmth, connection. ROI of social media can be best answered by PR/marketing/sales people, their niche in connecting with the community. But, to expect EVERYONE to be constantly using 'social media' during normal business hour is insane. Yes, ROI should be asked by any enterprise. Otherwise, there wouldn't be any profitable business around. An algorithm cannot be written when coders are misguided to use social media to 'collaborate'. A great write up on that, - Moushumi Kabir
One last thought on ROI of a hug. Cynic in me: how many people will hug someone they are having a disagreement with or dislike? Bottom-line? We all expect something in return, be it in social space or workplace. If someone can show me they hugged their worst enemy, I will call it a selfless act and maybe drop ROI 'talk'. My 2 cents! :-) - Moushumi Kabir

I often find US cable TV insular when it comes to foreign affairs - coverage of Barack Obama's recent speech in Egypt was a case in point. But CNN ignoring the Iranian protests is shameful. - Peter Dowley
I was always kinda of excited about the prospect of a 24 hour news network. Imagine how many more stories or how much more in-depth you could got on a single item. That really didn't happen. @Sean, i agree we have witnessed a coup--the sustained fight lasting a week with people in the street every day, making police run away, NYT editorial by Reuel Marc Gerecth has a good analysis of what it means, and AlJazeera has a good analysis. the action on the streets is having a huge effect, not just on Iran but on the Middle East. - Eleanor Wynn
Prokofy Neva, agreed that no new organizations can get in there, but any of the news channels could rebroadcast key videos, photographs and analysis of this very major geopolitical event--it is really disgusting to go through the TV channels and see the dreck that is on when something major is happening--our local news channels will cover a weather event non-stop, why doesn't a major channel cover this/ - Eleanor Wynn
the citizen journalism tells the story in a way noone else could. you are right there in the middle of the crowd with all the changes of pace and direction, the shaky camera itself tells a story and the sounds. it is like actually being there--that is why the twitter and youtube coverage is the real coverage--they don't have to process, package and add a local angle to it that waters down the effect - Eleanor Wynn

Dana: yeah, and that's an indictment of American culture right there that we can't pay attention to what's happening around the world because some stupid motorcycle dudes are too popular. - Robert Scoble
You're absolutely right, Dana. Ad revenue is on top the list right now, as far as I know. The question then is, should the network change their name so as not to mislead the public? - Moushumi Kabir
Some times we just report news but some times we(real time web) R the news ,CNN could use all the tools that we do,but they don't ,the news here is that old media if far far behind and as soon as they will get the point they will make the change ,the media world will not stay behind, they will learn and come back ,CNN is just one ,and all the others ? where are they ? - Johni Fisher
"ad revenue and viewership" - the problem in a nutshell. The cable "news" organizations are nothing of the sort. FOX never was. CNN started becoming more like FOX because FOX beat them in the ratings. You haven't been able to find "news" on cable in years, because bluster and celebrity crap sells more ads. - John Craft

John: you are right ,but when they can be in place and broadcast live they should stop the crap ,long time ago it was like that ,I don't know if you remember the Iraq /Israel war that CNN reporters were the once that reported the missiles places - Johni Fisher
"long time ago it was like that" - yes, prior to 2001 CNN had bureaux around the world, a committed news man in Tom Johnson , and an owner who didn't demand profits (Ted Turner). Ted sold to Time Warner, TW merged with AOL, and Tom Johnson retired, it all changed. - John Craft
I love being able to comment right from your blog! It's sounds like you had a very interesting night! It might have been a coincidence, but I believe everything happens for a reason. Look forward to your updates this week! - Michael Fidler
joebrroks, what is the purpose of so many Twitter accounts? Are they official or personal accounts? What's ROI for these accounts? Those would be my questions as a shareholder/Board. Given the economy, how resources are being used (or wasted) ought to be top priorities. - Moushumi Kabir
CNN will understand sooner or later that they must change ,I am sure that they are reading our news and as "news" its new for them :-)..... its not just being in place and on time ,it is much more from social media that they ignore - Johni Fisher
Regardless, CNN was broken before twitter. - Clint Laskowski
CNN only wants to use Twitter when it suits them -- but when they're getting out-reported by citizen journalists, they fold up the tent. - Curt Mercadante
Curt, trust me many of these accounts are activated by individuals who happen to be employees of the network and have put their work status on their profile. I doubt these Twitteres are official mouthpiece of the network. In fact, I think the network should be concerned by the random usage and waste of company $$$. - Moushumi Kabir
Moushumi: If CNN has lost "control" of it's employees' use of Twitter, it is only because these individuals realize the story that is being missed/fumbled by their employer. Perhaps we should consider them like whistleblowers -- unable to stand by and do nothing. - Curt Mercadante
Sigh. Seriously. - Patricia
Curt, I disagree. How an employee behaves or misuses resources should be taken seriously by any employer. I doubt many of them are so called whistle blowers, they aren't blowing anything, most times complaining about their work. If they are paid to maintain social space, that's a different story, as is the case with Robert and many other bloggers, microbloggers, etc. But, just to use one's position with high profile companies to promote their own agenda is simply wrong. My two cents. - Moushumi Kabir
The control of our media is something that few acknowledge but all should. How is it that just before a movie, you see a star on every cover of a magazine? That's a great example of the ability for others to move and sway media (and public opinion with it) -- granted, it's not harmful when it's something simple like Reese Witherspoon but it should be looked at as an example of HOW media... more... - Patricia
can Twitter become or is it already the concience of the world ? - Ross Button
Patricia, very true, human nature and what's plaguing workforce. Regarding the latter: I've seen promotion/hire based on whose daughter is friend's with whose daughter, who play golf with whom, who is friend with whose husband/wife, who shares smoke/wine with who, etc.. Simple abuse of power and total lack of professionalism. Good news though, the economic downturn will force (if they haven't already) companies to shake up org for the good. - Moushumi Kabir
@Amy, the "movers and shakers of the social web" include some that do this very same thing. I think it's up to consumers to police, not "leaders" -- consumers hand over their control in this country all the time, and it's too bad. We have the power to change the world, particularly in our country, yet we choose to leave it up to someone else instead. It's not a surprise, then, to see what we see happen. - Patricia
Moushumi: I find it troubling that you are more concerned about CNN employees using Twitter on "company time" to cover one of the most important news stories in the world (while their employer remains silent). That's like scolding your employee for not having his "TPS Reports" turned in on time while the office burns down around you. CNN failed here. - Curt Mercadante
Robert, your posts on Iran inspired this post: - Curt Mercadante
@amy, but if the movers and shakers contribute to the problem, what will anyone gain? Organize a mass movement of consumers to take control of the media and you'll see change. Otherwise, we won't. - Patricia
@Amy, most consumers do not know the way it works. they are not aware. that has nothing to do with who they are but what they know. i can spot instantly when something is "placed" in the media, when media has been controlled, etc. i've worked behind the scenes in media since i was 22 years old. Most consumers have no idea. To me, awareness is the only way to drive change. - Patricia
@Amy, not sure I get the comparison of how a technical platform that operates on its own has any correlation to how internet media is more legitimate. Regardless, it's too bad that there won't be a larger movement to push better reporting in ALL media (including blogs, etc.) stemming from the CNN example versus solely focusing on CNN because it could be a chance to usher in real change. - Patricia
Curt: you misunderstood me. Any company should be concerned about waste. If they aren't, they wouldn't be in business. Are you saying EVERYONE working at CNN should be Tweeting about what's going on in Iran? That's insane. That's what journalists/reporters/editors should be doing. My point was more directed at engineers/devs who waste enough time tweeting when there are projects on... more... - Moushumi Kabir
Patricia: I'm with you 210%. - Moushumi Kabir
When a car accident happens in a city, the first people to talk about it and report it are those who see it. Then it reaches media. Twitter is the digital/virtual equivalent. I think it's unfair to assume that the media can/should be everywhere to break every news item faster than its eye witnesses -- it did not happen in the old world, it isn't any different with the web. This is... more... - Patricia
Patricia: I agree with much of your last comment. However, when CNN is largely ignoring the story (as it was at many points or most of yesterday, per Robert's post) then it's pretty sad. Yes, the first people to report about the car accident are the people on the ground - and it's not fair to criticize "MSM" for not being there to report it. Which is why we need to reconsider what... more... - Curt Mercadante
@Curt, and on a smaller level, every time I see biz bloggers ignore entrepreneurs who are 500x better than half the ones people write about, I feel the same way. Or, when I watch media and blogs bias towards their insider connections, etc. What I'm saying is not that CNN ignoring the story isn't sad -- what's sad is that CNN ignoring the story isn't exposing the bigger problems... more... - Patricia
Patricia: I see opportunity! Maybe we should be pioneers of the solution? To quote Gandhi: be the change we want to see? :-) - Moushumi Kabir
@Moushumi, lots try. I try. Unfortunately, ego, interests, money, etc. drive the majority of what's said in today's media/blog world -- not change. - Patricia
If there is anything good from this, it is that social media and individuals w/in these networks proved their real-time value - my mom (@purplepod) turned to Twitter after finding zero TV coverage and was up last night following those with coverage. She does not Twitter much, but finally realized that if there is anything to be found, it will be online. And not at - Liza + = ?
It's funny. CNN's Reliable Sources ran a segment questioning the need for Twitter in journalism. Rick Sanchez defended it saying he was able to interview someone in Tehran about the riot via Gmail all because of Twitter. The other guy, can't recall his name, labeled it another way our culture is going down the tubes, and the people on it have nothing substantial to say. - Eric - Final Countdown
Please remember: CNN frequently says, and it is frequently said about CNN, that it cannot be beat in covering a big breaking news story--its bead and butter--and that no American network can match its international reach or global reporting network. They should be out front on this story. - Jay Rosen

Just went with . Trying to signify that it's the digital presence, not the human. That we can't worry and cling to ships of the fleet, especially those like Facebook where we lease. I wanted to go WAY off-name, but got nervous that I'd screw myself in search results.
I try and use the same username for almost everything online, which isn't my given name. It always annoyed me I couldn't use it in fb. Happy to be able to now. - jjprojects
Just sad that I pussied out. - Chris Brogan
i started using "glemak" online very early - so search on that is better than search on my name (mike dunn is to common)... - mike "glemak" dunn
you didn't puss out chris - you are "the" chris brogan after all ;) - mike "glemak" dunn
Does that mean some jerk could get chrisbrogan instead of you? That would suck. - jjprojects
Someone else already has chrisbrogan, I guess. - Chris Brogan
@glemak - but you're kind of "glemak" to all of us. Like, when I met you, I had a hard time thinking "Mike." - Chris Brogan

That seems reasonable. : ) - Chris Brogan

Palm Pre. Good, but won't get me off the iphone. More:
Why/why not? - Manuel Mas
I was thinking about looking at it but then I discovered it doesn't have an Apple logo on it :) - Mike Bracco
The keyboard sucks. The layout really wasn't thought out very well. The iPhone's bigger screen is much better for web work. - Robert Scoble
I tested the Pre a bit and I found its form factor to be great and as many have said, it feels great on the hand. The keyboard is small yet I prefer it to having no physical keyboard. Love the touch screen and how it makes a ripple where you are pressuring the screen (as a pointer) and how you can multitask/close apps with a flick of the finger. Browser is a bit slow compared to Safari in my opinion. Overall is a great little phone. - Manuel Mas
The font is nice though.. - Harald Nesland
I see the "smart phone" market as essentially just a small computer. In that sense, it doesn't make sense to have more than a couple players (i.e. a couple OSs). I think it will play out just like computers did. You will have Apple and someone else - maybe a third player. - Mike Bracco
Posting comments to friendfeed has failed four times now. It is buggy that way. - Robert Scoble

Yeah Yeah, everyone said the iPhone's keyboard sucked too but everyone uses it. - Dennis Jackson
The browser seems a little faster, yes - Robert Scoble
i liked iphone keyboard since day one - Tyler Gillies
Bought it last Sat. Nice phone. Beautiful screen, love the sliding form factor and have found the keyboard useful. Browser works great, but it is a tad slow. Flash support is coming, so that will help the browser more. Wish it Live Search Mobile. - George Gray

The Palm Pre will do very well. But not for me. Why? There are millions of people who just want a phone. Or that hate AT&T. Or that hate Apple. Or that hate optical keyboards. - Robert Scoble
Dennis if you have 40,000 apps everyone can find 10 that are good. iPhone is way ahead there. - Robert Scoble
Very satisfied with the Palm Pre so far. The Tweed Twitter app is good. Pandora, Evernote, LinkedIn, and many other helpful apps are there already. iPhone iUI web apps like my work on it. Hoping the webOS will make it easier for folks to innovate with plain old Javascript, CSS, HTML, without having to learn iPhone centric Objective C. The keyboard makes IM and... more... - Al
My biggest question is, why would Palm get so close to releasing the Pre and not be really promoting it to the developer world? I just think they (Palm) missed the opportunity for a great release with an awesome little device. I want to think they are going to think a little more out of the box after they have seen the comments on the phone. Do you think they will be able to stick... more... - Pentaxfan
It's really not a competition or child's game to root for iPhone or the Pre. It's your preference and what works best for you. Palm aced with Pre and it will only get better. For iPhone users who are keeping score, remember the glitches of first generation iPhone? Palm Pre is using first ever webOS and most apps are on beta. If you're a developer you know fixes are often needed after... more... - Moushumi Kabir

Jim, Android is an OS not a phone. - Stuart
Jim: Stuart is right. There are going to be about 12 different Android devices soon (probably more, since Android is an open source OS the phone manufacturers don't need to tell Google about the devices they are building with it). Android is getting more and more interesting to me. It sure is nice to have some competition for the iPhone too. - Robert Scoble
Palm Pre. Good, but won't get me off the HTC HD. - Amit Morson
What about Nokia N97 then - Stelios Kiousis
Quite the change from January... "Palm is a lot nicer than iPhone. I want one. The web and social networking features are killer." "Anyone who says Palm's new Pre isn't a better experience than the iPhone either hasn't tried both or is an idiot or is both."... more... - Bwana ☠
Bwana: I'll still stand by those statements. It is nicer in a lot of places than the iPhone. The camera is far far far superior. The OS itself is superior. The phone itself is superior. The apps are not. And the keyboard, after using it all day, is not (IMO) and since I use a ton of apps and the keyboard isn't as big a deal as I thought in January I'm backtracking a bit. The contact app is nicer. Oh, and what else changed since January? iPhone 3.0 was announced and is about to ship in a new iPhone 3Gs. - Robert Scoble
Wow, the keyboard must be really bad :( - Bwana ☠
The apps I can understand though, it's kind of unfair when comparing to the iPhone... it's kind of a unnatural thing we're witnessing with Apple - Bwana ☠
Bwana: it's not that bad. It's just that I've gotten used to the iPhone keyboard and I can type faster on it than I can on the Palm. But I know many people who vehemently disagree with me over the keyboard. So, even if you hand that one to Palm, there's still the app problem. - Robert Scoble
Quote: "Oh, and what else changed since January? iPhone 3.0 was announced and is about to ship in a new iPhone 3Gs" -- and? do you want one for testing? :-D -- I wish I could test a Pre, but it won't be available here in Italy until a year, and at the moment I actually don't know how to choose among iphone and magic/android (palm pre not available as said). - Markingegno - Donato
Markingegno: I'm getting an iPhone 3.0 (paid for it with my own money). - Robert Scoble
The number of poor apps argument kind of baffles me. When I have 150+ apps that I deem useful, suddenly it's very much about the platform and less about the phone. Doesn't really matter that there are another 39,850 apps that do not appeal to me. Plus it goes without saying that everyone has a different 150 apps that they have downloaded. - Jamie
"[the keyboard is] not that bad. It's just that I've gotten used to the iPhone keyboard" -- Bingo - Ken Sheppardson
The screens are both 320x480. The Pre's is 3.1", the iPhone's is 3.5". The Pre screen held at 16" will look the same as the iPhone held at 18". - Ken Sheppardson
Correct me if I'm wrong... iPhone launch - June 2007, iPhone SDK launch - March 2008 - Ken Sheppardson
Number of iPhone apps available the week it launched in June 2007 = ? - Ken Sheppardson
@Robert I'm just envious because you could test a Palm Pre :) - Markingegno - Donato
Yeah, I know... things are different now. If the Pre wants to kill the iPhone, they need to step it up. Thing is, they don't necessarily want or need to kill the iPhone. The good news for those of us who like the Pre and webOS is Palm's selling them as fast as they can make them. If they can keep that up, good things will happen. - Ken Sheppardson
As much as I love innovation, I'm getting tired of buying new iPhones. But I can't help wanting shiny new things! I'm like a crow.
You still in a contract? I am! I have to wait until Next yea, It's $499 for 3GS 32GB upgrade. - Fee501st
UGH. - Veronica
What's making you buy new ones? - Zach Landes
I'm like the most reluctant iPhone fangirl ever. - Veronica
oh and...iphone or pre?! - Zach Landes
Zach, it's a compulsion. Not just with iPhones, but with every gadget I own. If a new one comes out, I get mad that I have an old one. - Veronica
Crows aren't that bad: - Tanath
The Pre is sweet. - Veronica
Yea there was secret part of me that didn't want a new iPhone to come out. - Fee501st
Well, since you are looking for innovation, you get a nice big "pass" get out of jail card with this WWDC keynote. Everything they announced is just catching up with features every other mobile platform has had, in some cases for years. So no innovation to worry about. :) - Christopher A. Wichura
Has it been released yet? I have not seen it yet. - Michael McDermott
ooooh, Veronica - I thought your original message meant you had physical iphone issues that made you get new ones (in addition to the innovation reasons). Are they reliable for you? I'm in the UK, but I'm thinking of waiting for the Pre over getting an iPhone, despite the lower CNET score... - Zach Landes
Join me in Windows Mobile world, Veronica! Then you'll have to upgrade every year anyway. ;) - Chris Charabaruk
I have a "buyer" lined up for my old 16GB Black 3G iPhone, so now I can buy the new one~~ =) yippeeee! - Susan Beebe
I'm lucky I've the need to be unique and not flock to new craze. :) - Moushumi Kabir
I was getting ready to upgrade to iPhone 3G from original IPhone. Glad I waited. - Heath Howard
Yeah, the iPhone sure is a new craze! - Veronica
Veronica, iPhone sure is the craze. The only reason I got Pre is probably because it was courtesy of Sprint and at an invite only event. If I had to go to a retail store or wait in line, forget it. :-) - Moushumi Kabir
Well, I can't really argue with someone who just wants a phone because it's free. - Veronica
not just free but Sprint has better plan than ATT. Ideally, phones should be sold as hardware and consumers should be able to choose their own carrier. But, that's going off topic. - Moushumi Kabir
^ lol if they was true AT&T would have no business lol! Did you guys hear the boos when AT&T wasnt on the list of Providers that will offer tethering for 3.0? - Fee501st
Moushumi, thoughts on the pre so far? - Zach Landes
Jay: I thought that was the secret of Twilight. - Chris Charabaruk
I love sparkly things, especially if they want to make me their vampire wife. - Veronica
I went into WWDC (figuratively) looking forward to upgrading from the 1st gen IPhone. I left wanting a 13 inch MBP. - ChiliMac
I like shiny, new gadgets too.....understand where you're coming from.....but after drooling for a while I have to smack myself in the face, and get back to reality! :) - Bonnie Foster
Zach, I'm still playing around with it but so far - pros: great OS, super fast, love the capability of running multi apps simultaneously, super integration of google, GPS, fast video stream and sprint TV. Cons: very short battery life (may be due to having too many apps running a lot, will limit and see how long battery lasts), gets hot very fast, keyboard not the top of the line,... more... - Moushumi Kabir
hrm...that battery life problem is making me wonder if I should wait for it in europe or get a regular iphone. - Zach Landes
I bought my iPhone 3G in January, this year, as an upgrade from my old Motorola. - George Brickner

People are still so hung up on storage. Who needs 32 gigs on their iPhones, seriously? #DigitalPackRatsFTL #fb
Come ON it's 2009 - streaming and cloud ring a bell? - Mona Nomura

I don't even use more than 6 GB out of my 16 GB. But who knows, video capture could change the deal. - Brome
I could use that space easily. - Tanath
Apparently I only have 780MB left on my 16GB iPhone so I guess I do. - rønin
Trust me, I am struggling with 16GB. I tyr to keep some movies on mine. I have a large library of music. Podcasts up to my neck. My headphones rarely come off of my ears. So yeah, 32 GB is a big seal for me. - Darrell Bell from twhirl
With 30fps video and movie purchases on the phone, that storage might get eaten up fast. - Alan
My old ipod has 33 gb of music alone. - Andrew C (✔)
As storage space increases, people will find a way to use it. - Tanath
Too many stuff works hard on the functionality. - Praveen Vasudev
Usually I'm with you on the storage thing, but for VIDEO? Yeah, you'll want the 32g. - Steve Isaacs
I want the voice and video! - Susan Beebe
Susan - I hate talking to people, I don't think I'd talk to my phone. ;) - Mona Nomura
ha ha, Mona! - Moushumi Kabir
I definitely feel the limitation with 8GB, as I have a ton of music (about 150GB). With 32GB I can probably sync ALL of my 4-5 star tracks, so it's a fairly big deal for me. - Jamie
When I can get 3G everywhere I go then cloud computing becomes an alternative - Brian
all I can say is Kudos to Apple's branding/PR/marketing people for selling whatever Apple 'invent' to their dazzled/waiting fans. That's the success of branding! :) - Moushumi Kabir
I'll most likely get the 16gb and then just upgrade my iPod (or is it downgrade?) from a 30gb video to a 120gb 3rd gen. I have a cubic shit-ton of MP3's, so even a 32gb iPhone won't do anything for me. I imagine that if I were to stock more movies or videos, it would be a big deal. - Hookuh Tinypants
Mona, I have a 32GB iPod Touch, and it's a challenge to keep from filling it up. I watch and listen to lots of podcasts. - Ha3rvey (on hiatus)
Like in a house--you tend to fill-up whatever space you have available. - Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
I don't get it either. If everything goes to Hulu or Netflix or xyz service, the storage issue becomes moot. If I'm out of coverage, i.e. on a plane, I'll bring a Touch or ZuneHD. - EricG
when mobile networks can be there 100% of the time maybe, until then local storage will win every damn time. Tell me, do you get 3G access every time you try to access something? And how much worse will that access be when everyone is streaming their video and audio across it? - alphaxion

Will Apple Kill Palm’s Hype “Pre”maturely? -
Pun intended. So Palm had it’s big day yesterday (June 6th) with their release of the Palm Pre and early reports are that they had a good day in terms of sales. You guys think so? I'm not so sure yet. I'm leaning towards yes due to Apple's track record this time of year. If there's no new hardware announcement, I think Palm will be in better shape. But as we've all seen in a bunch of a different places, new hardware is expected :) - Bwana ☠ from IM
I would be shocked if Apple didn't release hardware. I mean the contracts for the original iPhone will be expiring soon and Apple needs something to get people to stay. New hardware, exactly what they need. - Mister IQ
my comment was for -->- "Monday can't come fast enough :)" not the post. - vijay
oh, heh - Bwana ☠ from IM
we're talking about the marketing hype, not the phone - Bwana ☠ from IM
I think that Apple's marketing hype will crush the Pre's, given that there will be new hardware. - Mister IQ
Apple's app store and probably new hardware tomorrow will keep the iPhone going strong, but I doubt it will completely kill Palm's hype. I think it can co-exist, but it will probably lose some momentum if Steve pull out his magic hat.. on monday - Sebastiaan van den Akker
I might buy a Pre if it doesn't take until Christmas for the phone to come out in the Netherlands.. - Sebastiaan van den Akker
I agree, but I think that the Pre will be the side note on the iPhone press this Monday, especially on the mainstream press. Side note: I just switched to FF from Twitter, and these live comments make me wonder why I ever used Twitter. - Mister IQ
You might be sick of hearing me say it, Bwana... :-) but I think as long as people are mentioning Pre in the same sentence as iPhone, it's a win for Palm. If everybody just quits talking about the Pre tomorrow, that's a problem, but if the converasation continues to be "does this kill the Pre (or the Pre's hype)", it doesn't. - Ken Sheppardson
but Web OS is imho much more advanced that an Apple's current iPhone OS withs easy card switching of apps and its automatic snycing with FB and Google.. Apple will have to poop out the iTable to kill the Pre's hype... - Sebastiaan van den Akker
But WebOS is weak in comparison to the iPhone OS due to all of the apps developed for the iPhone. - Mister IQ
I'm not sick of it kshep, it's a valid point. A big reason why I brought it up is because it could really help or hurt palm in my opinion. We know after Apple events, they usually dominate news. We'll see tomorrow - Bwana ☠ from IM
@Mister yup, you got me there.. but i believe if the Pre is a succes, developers will come.. and I'm looking pure at the OS...,, it is more advanced than iPhone's OS - Sebastiaan van den Akker
Yes, and the WebOS would have crushed the iPhone 1.0 software if it was released near the same time. - Mister IQ
We sorta have to keep in mind what success means for Palm here... it's *not* "killing" the iPhone. It's selling Pres as fast as they can make them. Nothing else really matters. - Ken Sheppardson
I think other things matter, they're just not as important - Bwana ☠ from IM
well, atleast this will force Apple to improve it's os and finally allow background processes.. - Sebastiaan van den Akker
Dude. I was being dramatic. - Ken Sheppardson
darn, I totally missed that - Bwana ☠ from IM
I doubt that Apple will allow Background Process. They are so proud of the Push Notifications. - Mister IQ
@Mister but how are you truly going to multitask on the iPhone *without* true background processes.. push notifications are overated.. tell that to Phil Schiller - Sebastiaan van den Akker
I don't like the idea of Push Notifications, I just don't see Apple allowing the hit to battery life. I mean my battery dies in about an hour of streaming internet radio with the screen turned off. - Mister IQ
I'm withholding judgement until I actually use Push Notifications. I'll admit, that's the biggest need I have at the moment for background apps... that and Pandora... - Bwana ☠ from IM
I recently saw the push implimentation of beejive IM and it's not as smooth as the pre or android showing them in the background integrated in the os. It works, but it's not as pretty - Sebastiaan van den Akker
Now, I don't mean to fully judge based on this. It may be a flaw on the developer's side. I've only really tried this with one app which is; has anybody else had this problem? - Mister IQ
That shows one obvious benefit to the Pre, a removable battery which the iPhone lacks. - Mister IQ
A bit off topic: After seeing the Pre in action, I gotta wonder if it's faster to: 1. Quit an iPhone App and launch another 2. Switch apps on the Palm Pre. That interface is super sluggish. - Bwana ☠
Have you had a chance to use one yet, Bwana, or are going off what you've seen on video? (Not intended as any sort of slam, just a straight-up Q) - Ken Sheppardson
If you have an older iphone like the 2G one will u have video capabilities now or must u turn in your old phones to get this feature? - Amani
yes, Pre does take a little while when launching apps. For most users however, the regular array of apps is mostly the same, browser, chat, weather, twitter, music so once they are launched, the experience is snappy. So it "is" a better experience than the current iPhones *most* of the time. - vijay

I havent done any time tests or anything but from my own personal experience I'd have to disagree with the launching of the apps being sluggish on the Pre. I found that it was really snappy and quick to switch between apps. - Ron Wening
Ron - I'm just going by online demos, I've yet to use one myself. Interesting you've stated it's snappy. - Bwana ☠
I must also confess that this is my first "smart phone" but so far, switching between some of the main apps has been quick. It's the same type of feeling you get when you reformat your hard drive with a fresh install of Windows ME...minus the Windows ME. - Ron Wening
I have not used the Pre, haven't seen one in person yet. But gauging from the local news and national news from the big 3 it has received a lot of coverage. Will it be squashed by the iPhone? Maybe. But as Andy Ihnatko has been saying on Mac Break Weekly, a lot, the local news will cover the new iPhone and will have a quick snippet in the end or beginning about the Pre. And in the... more... - kenneth glenn
As a Pre user, I can definitely say its interface isn't sluggish in any way. Pre's multi-apps capabilities is very smooth and fast. The OS? As good as iPhone's if not better, having used both. Pre's short battery life and limited apps (that will no doubt change) are downsides for me. Regardless whatever version of iPhone is announced tomorrow, I'm pretty happy there is competition, better choice for consumers. Then again, I'm not a die hard Apple fan. - Moushumi Kabir

Myrna: Yep! We can observe social conversations about things that matter (well, to those of us who care), like watching a debate! Robert, was it slightly awkward to start off with, or did you face the issue straight on? - Steve Farnworth
Steve, I like that question - Myrna
Look what just passed by on my screen: RT @lorimcneeartist: "A coincidence is a small miracle in which God chooses to remain anonymous." - Myrna
Oops, didn't mean to imply you don't know Jung. I was referring to the synchronicity part, but after checking out your profile, I'm sure you're familiar with that too. :-) - Bas

Interesting Scoble - Jeremiah Owyang
did they knew that they were fired because of you? - Hameedullah Khan
sure that was all you talked about? Not about the Nimitz? - Peter van Teeseling from IM
lol Peter - Myrna
>Hameedulla: he wasn't fired. Luckily his bosses had access to what really happened. - Robert Scoble
So you get on the Nimitz and all you can talk about is tech-stuff? Reminds me of a tshirt: "My parents went to New York and all they got me was this lousy tshirt" - Peter van Teeseling from IM
Peter: nah, we were too tired to talk about THAT. Heheh. I walked up more stairs in the past two days than I had in the past year. Whew. - Robert Scoble
Steve: it was just slightly awkward when I finally figured out that I had just called for him to be fired a few weeks ago. Then I started asking questions. - Robert Scoble
Haha Robert, great news about the workout, uh exercise-only 20 more days to make it a habit :))) - Myrna
My roommate, by the way, was Andrew Nystrom. His Tweet is here: - Robert Scoble
Myrna I need you as a trainer - as long as I get some of that food you keep sharing to FriendFeed - Jesse Stay
Robert, are the pictures already on your Flickr account? Great stuff that must have been. - Peter van Teeseling from IM
Peter: yup, they are at (about 150 photos) - Robert Scoble
Jesse: *blushing*, you're just looking- Do Not Touch!!! Anytime you want some workout tips, let me know. And anyway, never mind my food, you should be exercising daily if you want to last. - Myrna
Myrna, I'm just starting to get into exercising again, but I keep cheating and putting it off for a few days. Wii Fit is my workout lately - seems to keep me going at least. I'm trying to go one day of aerobic, one day of toning exercise. - Jesse Stay
Robert: Did he know that you had called for him to be fired before you realised he was the one you called out? - Steve Farnworth
Jesse: If you get Fit TV, you can choose any program to follow daily at the same time. Gets you into the habit easily. I follow Gilad at 10AM EDT(Robert...hello!!!..) - Myrna
Myrna, interesting idea - I take it that's a cable channel? - Jesse Stay
Yup - Myrna

Robert et al (howdy): It was a pleasure to share a Nimitz stateroom w/ you and talk social media. Lots of good lessons learned from the 'Prop 8 incident': about Twitter, news, the new virality, crowdsourced factchecking, peoples' (sometimes mistaken expectation/assumption) that anything tweeted must be happening *at that moment* (our story I accidentally linked to was clearly... more... - Los Angeles Times
Now to decide if it's worth getting cable again just for that. I get over-the-air, and use Hulu and Netflix for the rest, which is amazing considering how much of a TV junkie I am. Anyway I'll stop hijacking Robert's thread. :-) - Jesse Stay
I find myself jumping up from pc at 10am, almost automatically - Myrna
HEY Robert, I actually did the same thing as Andrew on Prop8. I RTed the same article from 08 but someone quickly corrected me and I deleted tweet. What do I know!!!!! It sounded good. - Myrna
Jesse, exercise is good for everyone including Robert S. I already had the conversation with him in person lol - Myrna
FTR: Lots of other folks (including Perez Hilton) were retweeting our May 2008 Prop 8 story several hours before I jumped in and was trying to highlight that the link going around was was dated, old news. Anyone following the issue closely was aware that a Prop 8 decision was not due to come down that week, and many folks pointed that out quickly. DannySullivan asked Biz Stone last week... more... - Los Angeles Times
Robert: nice pictures! - Peter van Teeseling from IM
Andrew: thanks for the clarification. I missed that story completely (I'm in Europe), but it's an interesting issue. Thanks for sharing. Hope Robert didn't snore too much ;-) - Peter van Teeseling from IM
More FTRs: No, I didn't reply that Robert should be fired (who would fire him, anyhow?) for saying I should be fired ;-) #2 I was too knocked out to hear if Robert snores, especially above the Hornet aircraft landing over over heads all night. My initial @USS_Nimitz pics, including a nice one of Robert + Guy Kawasaki, are here (more to t/k soon): ~ Andrew @latimes - Los Angeles Times
Cooliris was a great way to soar over your photos... nicely done. What areas where you NOT allowed? - Brett Schulte

In an airport, which is more important to you: Wi-Fi or food? -
food! - Moushumi Kabir
food - Kevin Johnson
Wi-fi. I can bring my own food. - James Rishabh Mishra
Wi-fi. Airport food is gross and overpriced. - Anika
What Rishabh says. I can not bring my own wifi, but I can bring my own sandwich. - Eddie Awad
refinement: food when vacationing (avoiding yet another thing to worry about), wifi when flying for work (needing to stay in contact, and easier to grab something prior) - Kevin Johnson
now, I would want wi-fi too. I was hungry then! - Moushumi Kabir
ok, second refinement (architect's prerogative): both - it's not an either/or proposition. I want to wifi while eating, and I don't want to have to bring my own food. :-/ - Kevin Johnson

Okay - for @mona, I'll share 25 things you didn't know about me here:
1) I have eaten crickets, worms, dung beatles, and little fried tree-frogs, whole - Jesse Stay
2) I was named after my Grandfather, who earned 2 distinguished flying crosses in World War II for his service and bravery in some of the Wake Island Raids. He also ordered the deployment of the first-known parachute from a plane to slow the plane down. (similar to what the Space Shuttle does today) - Jesse Stay
3) My mother was born in Tasmara, Ethiopia, a city which today no longer exists because it was an Army base. She is white, but my brothers have really, really curly hair. - Jesse Stay
4) My ancestor is Orson Pratt, the very first pioneer into the Salt Lake Valley. Also one of the very first Mormon Geeks. I am also a decendent of Heber C. Kimball, an LDS apostle under Brigham Young - Kimball's son married Pratt's daughter. Even more interesting is that Kimball's wife (who I am through) was formerly a polygamous wife of Joseph Smith before Joseph Smith was martyred. Ah the stories of a descendant of Mormon pioneers. :-) - Jesse Stay
#1 ewwwww - Moushumi Kabir
5) I have lived in 11 places throughout my life, including Utah, Ohio, Indonesia, Texas, Thailand, and Virginia - Jesse Stay
6) I know English and Thai fluently, and can understand and speak a bit of Spanish and Indonesian as well. I know morse code, if you call that a language. - Jesse Stay
7) I am an Advanced class Amateur Radio Operator. My call sign is KC5PZP. I started when I was 16. - Jesse Stay
I know the feeling, I fall from a line where some great great great grandpa of mine had 11 wives . . . - Zach Holmquist
8) I started software development when I was 10 years old in Indonesia. I won 3rd place in my Elementary School Computer Fair. - Jesse Stay
9) In High School, I showed the teacher of my electronics class (yes, we had one - it was the first one of my High School) how to control 4 step motors using a series of AND-gates connected to a computer Parallel port. Before that he only knew how to do it with Transistors, and could only get 2 step-motors to work. - Jesse Stay
10) I graduated Suma Cum Laude from Strayer University with straight A's, and am a member of Alpha Chi honor society - Jesse Stay
11) I graduated in the very first graduating class of Cypress Falls High School in Houston, Texas - I am a Texan at heart - Jesse Stay
12) I was a missionary in Thailand for 2 years - Jesse Stay
13) In Thailand, I rode elephants (just for the fun of it), got to pet an alligator, and saw elephants play soccer and stand on their heads. - Jesse Stay
14) My best friend in High School's brother, Mike Dodson, is a lead guitarist for the very popular Christian band, David Crowder band. I got annoyed by his snoring at an outing, and stuffed his mouth with a sock once. - Jesse Stay
15) I played trumpet all through Junior High School, High School, and part of College. I was first-chair trumpet all through High School, and played in the University of Houston marching band (I was only there a semester). I almost majored in Music, until the dot-com boom happened and I decided computers paid more. Software Development is my second love. - Jesse Stay
16) I am an Eagle Scout - my Eagle Scout project was developing software to collect the blood types of people in our local church congregation. I also organized a blood drive. I am also a member of Order of the Arrow. - Jesse Stay
Interesting / unique background Jesse ! - Eric Berlin
17) My dad is an Executive Vice President for Ahold USA, a major Grocery retailer that owns Giant Food stores, Stop and Shop, and used to own Topps supermarkets and US Food services. He's one of the top Tax accountants in the world. - Jesse Stay
18) My license plate says "SOCIAL". I have also owned the license plates, "MODPERL" and "USEPERL". Perl is my preferred programming language if you can't tell. - Jesse Stay
19) My Uncle founded and I used to work there before they sold to (and went downhill) as a customer service and billing rep. It was my first experience in a dot-com startup. - Jesse Stay
20) My Uncle also founded KnowMoreMedia and I wrote some of the original software to bridge payment between KMM and bloggers for them. - Jesse Stay
21) I worked for Media General, a major media corporation which owns print and broadcast products throughout the southeast, including the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the Tampa Tribune, and several major new stations you may have watched. I was in charge of getting news, and eventually classifieds from the print products out to the web, and it was there that I learned how doomed old media was. (and how smart a decision it was for News Corp to purchase MySpace) - Jesse Stay
22) I've written 2 books - "I'm on Facebook--Now What???" (with Jason Alba, afterword by Robert Scoble), and "FBML Essentials" (O'Reily). I think I might write a few more, as I learned how much I love to write from those books. - Jesse Stay
23) When I was in High School I used to get the artists of the school to design graphics for me, and I would make T-Shirts out of the designs and sell them to my classmates. I was always amazed at the interest people had in paying $10 for something that cost me near $5 to make. I also worked for a print shop for awhile, helping to design T-Shirts, hats, and more - my job was to get the designs onto the computer for print later. - Jesse Stay
24) I've been working full and part-time since I was 14. My parents owned 2 Blimpie restaurants where I got to learn how a business was run, and what risk was involved. I worked there at age 14, but I babysat and mowed lawns for money since age 11. - Jesse Stay
25) I'm the oldest of 6 children, my youngest sister just turned 19. I babysit just about all my brothers and sisters - perhaps that's why having children is easy for me. I have 4 kids, and have been married to my beautiful wife for 10 years this year. - Jesse Stay
Phew! I'm surprised that was easier than I thought. - Jesse Stay
Jesse - loved your list, thanks for sharing. And number one is hilarious hahaha! - Mona Nomura

Good ol' South Carolina. They still don't allow sorority houses at universities on the grounds that six or more women in a residence constitutes a brothel. - charlestm
charlestm, et al.: I know this is off-topic and further that SC isn't the most advanced of states but: USC at least has a Greek Village with 9 sorority houses and 11 fraternity houses. The land belongs to the university, though the houses are privately owned. Are you referring to house ownership particularly? - Steve Lowe
Hill Billy Barristeers at their best! So glad I live in California where the politicians at least pretend to understand tech! - Sonya
I just find sentiments over North and South between Northerners and Southerners very entertaining. Isn't the civil war over - really over?! Try living in different countries and I guarantee one will have a bigger picture of the world, not regions of US! :) - Moushumi Kabir

Why I Deactivated Twitter’s Emails And Switched To | Twittercism -
I did that too. The problem though? The last email I received from SocialToo was end of April! I figured you guys closed biz... - Moushumi Kabir
Moushumi, our e-mails are now only available if you pay our $20 one-time premium. It will also speed up your auto-follow frequency by doing that. - Jesse Stay
Oh ok. I didn't know. Thanks for clarifying. - Moushumi Kabir
HATED SocialToo. Filled my Twitter account full of crap and wouldn't allow me to disconnect. Finally had to just change my account passwords, go through all of my Twitter tools and reconnect the ones I wanted to keep, then clean out the leaches and spammers SocialToo inserted. FAIL. - ‘-.-’ Tutivillus Grift
Tutivillus, you are always welcome to contact me if you have issues in the future. BTW, auto follow isn't the only feature we offer. It's just a complimentary service to what we're really about, helping you learn more about those you follow and cleaning up your stream. I'm never offended if you decide to turn off auto-follow, and in fact that's why we provide the option to remove all... more... - Jesse Stay

Twitter Succumbs to Marketer Attack [Toldja So] « The SiliconANGLE -
This happens for a variety of reasons, all of which are due to a poor design on Twitter. First, a block doesn't remove people from search. Second, I should be able to set the trending topics, Twitter shouldn't choose those for me. Twitter is too enamored with popularity. Popularity is often the WORST way to decide what to display. Third, there's no decentralized moderation system, like there is on friendfeed. Fourth, there's no metadata, so you can't say "don't show me things that don't have a like." - Robert Scoble from Bookmarklet
Chris: I'm using it less and less, believe me. I used to be hyper addicted to Twitter. Now I'm seeing more and more people joining me over on friendfeed. I don't think that's due to an accident. - Robert Scoble
Is the velocity of innovation increasing exponentially? Will friendfeed be out done by something new? Are we doomed to mediocrity stuck in mud upon popularity? What model could foresee and adapt? - Eric Standlee
Well Robert, I never got into Twitter mainly because of how hard it was to follow a conversation. The more I use friendfeed I like it more and more its easy to jump in or just follow the context of a conversation without having to bounce to each persons twitter site... or maybe I was just using it wrong. - Nathan McClain
i kinda dug the obscurity of following twitter conversations. it was different than outright plain broadcasts to the world, and you could manually choose not to follow certain 'threaded' topics by not clicking on them. these attacks were bound to happen considering the numbers of ab-users that have joined thinking up 'maven' or 'guru' ways on exploiting said technology for their own nefarious goals. - sɹǝɥʇɐǝɟʞɔɐןq
Eric: I don't know about increasing innovation, but this has been going on since the 1980s. Back then I used to be on a BBS. I left that for AOL, Prodigy, CompuService. I left those for Usenet. I left that for blogs. I left blogs for Twitter (mostly). I am now in the process of leaving Twitter for friendfeed. Will there be something after friendfeed? Yes. - Robert Scoble
In the words of Mark 'Rizzn' Hopkins "Twitter becoming an MLM and spam cesspool" - Ciro Villa
Twitter is still a fascinating message bus, not a destination, for the reasons you say. FF isn't quite the message conduit that Twitter is, as it's a hybrid communication conduit (responses here, for example), and aggregator. Twitter is still an exemplarary, *pure*, communication bus - like IRC. - Dave Mee
spam is bad obviously, but i must admit i am kind of enjoying the new mainstream twitter. one thing i have noticed for example is the hip hop community migrating from myspace to twitter. i can't see them coming to friendfeed, but who knows. Also while marketing gaming in annoying, its lovely to see people playing tag games at scale. trending manipulation for the masses is fun. hard to manage for sure. but to my mind good to see - James
James: they will come when they figure out the power of rooms and the fact that you can play music right in line here. - Robert Scoble
I don't see anything surpassing FriendFeed as the optimal place to socialize online in the next couple years, unless keyboards/monitors get replaced with some other interface. - Bruce Lewis
holy jebus Robert that really is real time. i have *never* had a comment back in any medium that fast, even IM. - James
In the absence of trust and recommendation systems metadata such as liking would still be prone to attack. - Mike Chelen
Mike, that's true for search, but for your main feed your social network protects you from that sort of thing. - Bruce Lewis
Bruce, the source of the trending topics problem is that they are unaffected by the user's selection of friends - Mike Chelen
I see what you're saying, Mike. I wasn't thinking about that, since I only care about trending topics my friends find interesting. If you're in a position where you have to watch general trending topics, I can see how there would be a challenge to weed out astroturfing. - Bruce Lewis
Bruce: people who use have no choice in what trending topics they see. - Robert Scoble
It strikes me that part of the reason that Twitter is so popular is that it has become a lightning rod for so many good mobile and desktop apps. That's how Twitter has been able to rise above the spam and marketing noise as it has. - Ed Moltzen
Ed: Twitter's API simplicity and the mobile and desktop apps are, indeed, a major part of its success. I really wonder how friendfeed is going to see anything close to that. If I were at friendfeed I'd focus a LOT of attention on mobile experiences. That's already where I probably spend 30% of my friendfeed time. - Robert Scoble
Robert, I think it's their biggest draw back at the moment. I have a hard time interacting with FF when I am not in front of a computer. - Aaron Kurtz
Robert: I went through gopher, bbs, prodigy, aol, msn for awhile, usegroups, yahoogroups, blogs, twitter and friendfeed now as well as facebook. It would be fun to see these plotted on a timeline to see if it is accelerating. The change sure seems to be accelerating. Maybe reviewing the timeline we can predict the next one. - Eric Standlee
Twitter shouldn't be a topic of conversation. It's just a waste of time. Twitter cares more about popularity than the community. One need to browse through their 'Suggested Users' to come to that conclusion. Why should Oprah matter more, considering she has absolutely nothing to contribute to the community other than attract digital fans? Discussing Twitter gives them exposure, which they deserve less and less by the day. My rock stars aren't like their rock stars (borrowed phrase)! - Moushumi Kabir
Susan Beebe
TIP: Do not start your tweet w/ @ if you want everyone who follows you to see it. Otherwise, only MUTUAL followers see it (via @conniereece)
Problem with that is now I'm responsible for deciding whether followers want to see it. Before they could control what they saw. - Jandy
Yep!! - Susan Beebe
I don't like this change. I should be able to decide what I want to see. That's the problem with new techs, after awhile users loose control. - Moushumi Kabir
Who the hell wants to think that hard to disseminate some information? #twitterfail - Derrick
Exactly! I am really annoyed by twitter's unilateral decision to filter conversations out of the twitter stream - Susan Beebe
Pretty annoyed with their "celebrity" users promotion as well. Makes me cringe when I think it's my industry people going gaga over such ego-centric users. And now this. Seriously, Twitter needs to get a grip. - Moushumi Kabir
Hahaaa, so true!! - Susan Beebe
Thanks for the tip, I hadn't looked into what the uproar was about. Not too hard, I suppose, just leave off the @, can still refer to person by name. Just the tweet probably won't show up in 'mentions'. Don't like, but can cope. - Christopher Galtenberg
I am thinking of adding a . << a period right in front of the @reply. - Susan Beebe

Wow, this is surprising. Omid has been at Google forever. - Bret Taylor from Bookmarklet
Huge news. - Paul Buchheit
lonut...your comment dont make sense? - Rob Sellen :o)
omid is iranian :) - Mil∂d
In other news, reporters have stopped researching anything. From "Omid Kordestani has decided to hand over the reins to Nikesh Arora, currently President of International Operations, and take on a new role as Senior Advisor, Office of the CEO and Founders. Continued growth is essential to our future success and no one is better placed to advise on new revenue opportunities than Omid, the business founder of Google." - EricaJoy
Yeah, "leaves" is the wrong word, but it sounds a lot like partial retirement at the very least. - Paul Buchheit
I'm not quite sure that counts as "leaving Google." - EricaJoy
Erica, don't forget that big moves like this are sometimes done slowly. That may not be the case here, but it might be. - Paul Buchheit
wow, that is news! - Moushumi Kabir
Current re-orgs were all pointing in this direction as all new promotions were dotted line reporting to Nikesh - still it's sad to see this change, I remember [a decade ago] when I received my Google offer from Omid, and he's been an amazing role model for all those years... - Aydin Senkut
Still, the headline makes approximately zero sense. If Omid does leave someday (which would of course be very unfortunate), then that headline would be appropriate, but as it is it's just wrong. - Joel Webber
Omid is actually turning into an alien zombie werewolf. Note: big changes like this are sometimes done slowly. That may not be the case here, but it might be. - Jim Norris
Yah, they updated the story after I posted this: "Google spokesperson just emailed to let us know that Omid is staying on with the company in a full time capacity and is still on company’s operating committee." - Bret Taylor
When I first saw Nikesh Arora speak at our sales conference a few years ago, my co-worker and I turned to each other and said: "This guy is the next Omid." - Ginger Makela Riker
Little known: Omid studied electrical engineering, and wrote Fortran code on punch cards in his early days. - Amit Patel
Big change, interesting move - still laughing over Jim Norris' comment ;o) - Susan Beebe
Omid is great, but honestly I think he'll be better for Google in a more strategic role. Nikesh is a master tactician. - Daniel Dulitz

wow - we bitch about twitter and their default list but cmon - i just signed up for a new friendfeed account and was presented with a default list - techcrunch, mashable, loic all on there with next to zero activity - hmm - why bash one and not the other?
Oh, we bash the default list here, too. Often. - Akiva
I thought we DID bash FF? I thought we made a big stink about it? Maybe I'm losing it :) - Rahsheen
i posted about it and did a video about it a year ago - seems nothing has changed :( but hey we gotta keep the top on top! - Allen Stern
you know, ff has so much data on all of us - why not just ask the new user "give us 2 things you are interested in" - then find 10 people who match those things? that'd be damn hot and would move ff past twitter, etc. - Allen Stern
Allen: the friendfeed list is a meritocracy. The Twitter one is not. The friendfeed list is based on numbers of followers. It is the same as the ffholic list. The Twitter list is NOT based on numbers of followers. It is NOT the same one as on Twitterholic. - Robert Scoble
Also, the friendfeed list is NOT on by default. You have to manually add people. You can NOT add everyone as a group (like you can with Twitter's list) And the list is infinite, it will keep going as long as you have time to scroll through and add people. - Robert Scoble
Allen: does the list you see match this one? - Robert Scoble
Once you log in, by the way, friendfeed presents a totally different list: one that's based on who you chose to follow. So, if you don't follow anyone who knows me, for instance, you'll see the most popular person your friends follow. - Robert Scoble
It seems much more difficult to be followed or added here Robert. Is that my imagination? - Gregg Scott
Gregg: just mouse over my name and you'll see a tile with whether or not your are following me. Or, click on my name and you'll see a subscribe link. I've done that manually thousands of times, so it's not that hard. - Robert Scoble
yea I know robert - but why should they pimp people who don't use the service at all either? naturally someone like yourself belongs there - also thomas hawk, etc - but if i am interested in food or health topics and not tech, why not present me with a list of people who I might be interested in and stay around - if i only want health/food and subscribe to say mashable because ff says to, will i leave? think about that one :) - Allen Stern
To Subscribe is easy. To be 'Subscribed to' by other FriendFeeders though I mean. I imagine it is based on contributing to discussions. - Gregg Scott
Allen: TechCrunch is a user of the service. They shove their items in here and I like their feed. It's my number one most engaged with feed. So what if they don't comment or like anyone else's items here? By the way, notice I'm number one here. Why is that? I engage so the system is rewarding me for doing that. - Robert Scoble
In my experience putting great content into the system matters more than participation, but participation DOES matter too. Maybe they should have two separate lists? - Robert Scoble
Gregg: I get subscribed to both by participating as well as talking about this on my blog a lot, which gets people to come over here and follow me. - Robert Scoble
Thanks Robert! I do challenge you at times but I appreciate your willingness to build and engage communities. You almost always reply to comments--mine and others--which I find increasingly rare by the Technorati. - Gregg Scott
Gregg: out of the "A list" I find I'm one of the few who links more often to other people's stuff rather than my own on my list. I wish there were more too. - Robert Scoble
I wrote about the difference between just throwing feed items in and actually participating a couple of weeks ago. what im suggesting is that ff is missing a real golden opportunity to match users with their interests - not just presenting the top 20 subscribed, etc. - Allen Stern
i bash nothing, they all do a fine job on their own ;/ - chaz2b
You did bash it very clearly not so long ago, Allen. But FriendFeed's default is less "hand selected" by Twitter, but instead selected by the community who opted to follow those folks and push them to the top. To remove them would require "hand deselection" of sorts. - Louis Gray
ok let me just clarify - ff's list is better than twitters - i think we all agree on that - now focus on my suggestion for improvement and let's discuss that - if my interest area was tech for example, i would expect the current default list i guess... - Allen Stern
Yellow card submitted to Robert for "I'm one of the few who links more often to other people's stuff rather than my own." :) The "likes" list only shows other people's content, so everybody's like list is 100% other people's stuff. Mine is here: - Louis Gray
maybe the default list should just be a list of the guys who can piss the farthest. - Karim
Sounds like sour grapes. I've never even considered the idea. Who cares how many subscribers you have? People with an agenda different from my own. - coldbrew
Louis: right and how many A Listers like lots of other people's stuff? Go down the ffholic page and tell me how many. - Robert Scoble
We both know many of the A-Listers are simply inactive. I gave you a yellow card, not a red card for that one. :) - Louis Gray
since we all seem to care about ff's success possibilities - what im trying to suggest would increase that % - i just wrote a post about making things easier to improve your startup and it touches on this - Allen Stern
Allen: this stuff is all moot once you figure out the search engine here. - Robert Scoble
I think the lists are often insidery and aren't always valuable to the average user but I don't personally mind. I think it's a potential way for social networks to make money in the future - maybe not off the present people but larger brands, etc. I work in a market where the "A list" is totally different. :) Nobody would know who any of the people are, so I think they should try to diversify, etc. - Patricia
thanks robert - will look into that more as I don't use it as much as I probably should/could - Allen Stern
I'd probably get shot for saying this, but, I'd be more interested in seeing new people on the list. Isn't it much more fun and spicy to connect with vast users than the same ones on twitter, friendfeed or facebook? Just saying. :-) - Moushumi Kabir
Allen: the search engine is much better on - Robert Scoble
The suggested list upon sign up needs to be randomised to show popular and active users. We had this discussion a while back. Shame it's not changed. - Kol Tregaskes
For example, Kol should be on the list. Moreover, Mona should be on the top of the list. - Michael Fidler
That's very kind, Michael, I'm not worried either way but I think the list should be more mixed. Some of the most popular users are hardly active on FF. Robert is active and popular so that's fair he is on the list but some are not, I'm sure the more active users or put a lot int FF itself would appreciate being on such a list? - Kol Tregaskes
I am starting to come around to Allen's position. Friendfeed should make its list more focused on participants rather than popularity. - Robert Scoble
But really they need a directory of many different lists. Sort of like AllTop. If I am into quilting why is friendfeed suggesting TechCrunch to me? - Robert Scoble
Robert: I was thinking of a directory similar to but perhaps smaller in scale than, but I agree, a directory would be very helpful to new FF users looking for specific niches. - Sharon McPherson
