The credit goes to Sam - he's the mastermind behind this plugin. :-) We're aware of the recent increase in spam, and we are currently working to improve our Akismet integration to clean up the problem. We hope to roll this out in the near future. Currently we do not offer a Captcha option. Unfortunately Captcha is not a long-term solution to spam - it’s becoming less effective than ever because it’s cheap for spammers to pay people to fill out Captcha's all day long. A better solution needs to be content based, like Akismet is, and we're currently working with our colleagues at Automattic to fix this.
