For dad's midlife crisis he decided to do crack. Mom booted him (I totally respect her for it). I tried to counsel him via phone long distance (grueling - he'd call in the wee hours all paranoid), but he went downhill fast - arrested, thieving, and then he just went off the grid. Fluff -- sell more magazine list -- disconnected from reality - Brian Sullivan
People love lists, Brian. :) - Mona N.
Geez, I've been snubbed again. Damn you, Putin. - Chris Baskind
Why putting ruler of Dubai at 7, not mentioning anyone from Bush administration (Cheney, Rumsfeld) on top 20, not having Bill Gates at all, but having Jolie and Pitt on top 10? This list is very funny... - Hayk Hakobyan
Influential, Hayk. What has Gates done (superficially) that influenced the world in 2007? -- and I'm a huge Gates fan. - Mona N.
"Powerful and influential" I think is the way the list is described. - Brian Sullivan
I think this list is really based on whose parties the Vanity Fair staff want to be invited to. - Robert Hafer
ola Mona :) Well, Gates was at the helm of Microsoft when Vista was released publically in january 2007. It was in 2007 that Bill and Melinda Gates Found. got the endowment from Buffett, bringing the foundation's financial capacity toalmost 40 billion USD. I think these two only would guarantee him a place in top 10 :) - Hayk Hakobyan
Stupid list. Re: Gates- he built a company that drove down the price of personal computers; so low that anyone can buy a PC at Walmart! This kind of access drove thousands of developers to built more software. - Ryan
But how did he influence, Hayk? How did Vista influence the world? Gates and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have done phenomenal things (trust me, I know). But how was that influential, is my question. :) Hi Hayk. - Mona N.
there is no steel industry exec. there is no president of Iran on this list and no Pervez Musharaf either! There are many film indutry reps, some actors, some singers, few investors and few bankers. Top 100 show business list! - Hayk Hakobyan
Mona:) LOL!! well, Vista did certainly influence the world with 20% market share and roughly 90 million users. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as you know much better than me did bunch of investments in health related things including a mighty 300 million USD for hiv/aids. I mean it all boils down to what we mean by influence. IMHO Gates and his activities influcenced - whatever that might mean - the world more than Abramovich and Jolie! - Hayk Hakobyan
Hayk and Ryan: This list is for the year 2007 lol. Not for people who influenced the world within the last century / decade... - Mona N.
Yeah...Vista inspired me to go back to XP. - Sean McGee
No wonder he's the 'most influential.' If looks could kill, he'll have you murdered if you don't agree. - Marianne Lenox
I love debating Mona :) With Vista and Buffett fund both taken place in 2007, Gates should have his place on this list, at least in top 20. He is not present. As mentioned before, there could also have been Iran's prez, Sarcozy, Lakshmi Mittal, and some others who did change thins in 2007. This list is too show biz oriented IMO. - Hayk Hakobyan
Fair enough- misleading when you see Sergey Brin, Larry Page, and Eric Schmidt. Anyway, The Gates Foundation gave how much money last year? Did that not influence something?- http://www.geekculture.com/joy... - Ryan
With Vista, there were a lot of stipulations that accounts for the 20% market share. And yes, I agree that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation did more for the world than a majority of that list. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with the list, but I mean look at the source. It is what it is. :) - Mona N.
Mona, it is rare that me and you debate :) we usually agree without further discussions! I do really think that Vanity Fair has a slightly fashion, pop-culture oriented view! And of course, they put bunch of people who did really "move and shake" this world in 2007! i only really resent them not putting Ahmandinejad and Gates!!! Sean, LOOOOL, same here!!! - Hayk Hakobyan
See Hayk, hopefully with this discussion, people may see things from another point of view -- if people actually take the time to read this lol. Critical thinking ftw ;) - Mona N.

that's why I didn't like the movie Juno. - Stephanie•CogSciLibrarian
I refused to see Juno. I'm disgusted by this whole 'parents can't tell their kids what to/not-to do" schtick. It's old. Yes, I blame parents for turning out lackluster, or defunct, or delinquent progeny. Do yer damned job, folks. - WarMaiden
I thought I was the only one who didn't like Juno because of this, completely inaccurate depiction of teen pregnancy - Bobbi Newman
Hells yeah! - Christa Burns via twhirl
Pregnancy was a big deal to me at 30. I cannot fathom how it would have been at 17. - Michelle Martinez
I think there's a big difference between "not a big deal" and the public shaming and lifelong ostracism of a girl (never the boy) who made a mistake. I personally prefer the new ways to the old. It's about compassion folks. - Liam Sullivan
No, I'm not for shaming the girl - she's already got ten tons on her plate at this point, but I do think it's proper to point out that parents abdicating their roles as parents and saying "well, teens do what they want" is ridiculous. And there's a difference between "shaming" and saying that it's not a desirable condition. Wholehearted happy acceptance of teen pregnancy doesn't help, I think. - WarMaiden
I just haven't seen such a thing you're mentioning. What I see is that girls who get pregnant still get a lot of harsh treatment for the most part, while some more enlightened folks help them work through it. - Liam Sullivan
There has to be some place between "scarlet letter" and E! where teen pregnancy is discouraged. Either the mother's life is derailed as she gives up her teen years to be a mother, or the child is damaged as they are abandoned by a mother that refuses to grow up. It can be mitigated, sure. Turn out ok. But it's pretty much never a good thing. - Brian Norwood
I didn't want to see Juno either...the glorification of JamieLyn Spears' pregnancy was frightening. Babies having babies. I'm glad to see more prospective grandparents are supportive, giving their daughters/grandchildren a better chance to succeed but the glorification of the babybump is scary. - Abigail (Hedgehog Lib)
As it's discussed in the blogosphere, many of the commenters are saying "is natural that kids will have sex, you can't blame parents." *This* is the attitude I take issue with - not with teens themselves, who deserve help and compassion. - WarMaiden
I don't blame parents for their children having sex...these little humans do have minds do their own. I've known many a youngster to have been "brought up right" still go out and have premarital sex. Sometimes it ends well...others it doesn't. I do blame parents for many things but controlling everything their spawn do is not one of them. Not in the age of the overreaching children services. - aka Taylor
Well, you do the best you can, and then your kid makes their own decisions. The focus on having sex with multiple partners and finding a different partner instead of finding ways to keep your current one "exciting" that pervades our culture is difficult for ANY parent to overcome. It's like trying to talk over a rock concert. I mean, having sex with ONLY your boy/girlfriend is almost PRUDISH in our society. - Brian Norwood
What? The pregnancy in Juno is a huge deal in the movie. At least that's what I got out of it. It's not celebrating it as an goal to aspire to, but as something that happened to her that she had to deal with the best way she could. - Chieze Okoye
comment edited, but I will say publicly that it's the parent's responsibility to give their children both medical and moral options when it comes to being or becoming sexually active. - Marianne Lenox
I agree with Chieze - Juno didn't celebrate teen pregnancy. It showed a girl learning to cope in a situation she wished hadn't happened. And being supported by her parents, not ostracized. - Connie Crosby
The best thing parents can do is be honest with their kids about the realities of sex and the potential consequences, including pregnancy, std's, etc. and the fact that some sexual activities are not necessarily "better" (i.e. safer) than others, tell them about contraception, and trust them to do what's right. - steplow is Steve

Class, yes. If the unlikely story that she lied about her pregnancy is true, it becomes a part of our politics, unfortunately, as it shows her level of integrity. - Erica Baker
Palin's views on reproductive rights, marriage, contraception, single parenthood, and what is considered "legitimate" and "shameful" therein could soon become a matter of law - so if her family is off-limits, ours certainly won't be. Just something to keep in mind! - joneilortiz
+1 Obama - Mattb4rd
+1 joneilortiz - Duncan Riley
Didn't Obama say he wouldn't want his daughters to 'pay for a mistake with a baby?' That's not making them off limits, that's using their reproductive rights for his own agenda - just like Palin. - Marianne Lenox
joneilortiz , there are 3 branches of America's government. Mrs. Palin will serve in a subordinate position in the executive branch. For her views to become a matter of law, even if she were to become President, would literally require an act of Congress and the Judicial branch would have to uphold it. ie, it aint gonna happen. - Mattb4rd
-1 joneilortiz. Presidents, and especially vice presidents, do not create laws. They can bring proposals to Congress but it's up to Congress, with a current Democratic majority, mind you, to actually create the laws. Just something to keep in mind. - Akiva Moskovitz

I hate everything the man stands for, and yet I believe him when he makes this request. - Trevor Carpenter
If, after the last 8 years especially, you don't think the Executive Branch has tremendous effect on what becomes law - Supreme Court justices are appointed, don't forget - then you are simply misinformed. Abortion rights and accessibility, for instance, have been whittled down through all sorts of measures that work in and around legislative action. Federal funding of faith-based programs, which effect reproductive rights tremendously, have of late been the work of the Executive Branch. - joneilortiz
@Mattb4rd: didn't you hear that the VP is no longer considered part of the executive branch? - Jim Norris
@Jim Norris: No, I haven't heard that one. What's the punchline? - Mattb4rd
joneilortiz, that's a different issue all together and a very important one. You're never really voting for a president, you're voting for the Chief Justices he appoints. However, even they do not make law; they interpret it. It's just, uh, as of late, they've been making quite a miserable job of it. - Akiva Moskovitz
@Jim Oh, that's right! lol @Akiva Ya, totally. Hopefully we'll get to a place where the executive branch doesn't have their hands in all the books! - joneilortiz
Very classy. The fact is, its none of our business. Even if the crazy, cruel stories going about were true, I could not fault a mother for protecting her family. - Jody C
@Mattb4rd/Akiva, don't be silly. The very purpose of running someone as Vice/President is so that their views become law. 'Become,' you will note, as a rather broad term. The constitutional details you refer to are of little relevance to any White House whose party has a bunch of people in Congress. - j1m
@Jody, but I could fault her for lying about it to the public and press. (Assuming she did, not saying she did.) It's also a matter of judgment. The choices she supposedly made tell a lot about her character. Lying is lying, whether it's to protect your daughter or to keep your wife from knowing you got a BJ. - Jeff P. Henderson
@Trevor, You hate everything he stands for? Why? What is it you think he stands for? - Tanath

"If it ain't got a roux, it's just a stew." - Harvey Simmons
Gussie and her family were from the Garden District, here's her recipe: heat to sizzling half a stick of butter in a black iron Dutch oven, add same amount of flour. Stir constantly to a dark roux. In a separate pan brown in butter celery, onions and green peppers. Add chicken stock slowly to the roux, then vegetables and whatever left over meats you have in the fridge. Add okra and stewed tomatoes, salt, black and red pepper. Make sure it's all boiling, then reduce the heat. Cook all day on low, covered. - Marianne Lenox
When it's time to eat, start your rice pot. Add whatever sea food you have to the gumbo - today I used tiny shrimp, oysters and crab meat. Bowl the rice and gumbo, adding Filet last, to taste. Yum. - Marianne Lenox

I meant at stake is the reputation and feelings of a young girl. On the other hand let's say it is proven true, I would ring Palin's neck should be wrung for putting her daughter out there like that. - Ruth Ferguson
I think the pregnancy charge is gross. Even if it is true, I don't think personal issues like this should become a national obsession. - Andrew Burd
I think there are enough legitimate reasons to vote against Palin to resort to this kind of stuff. The press needs to get its collective act together. - Harvey Simmons
Yeah, this one is getting on my nerves. The accusation borders on conspiracy theory, and even if it was true I can't figure out why anyone should particularly care - it's utterly inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, and there's a ton of more relevant negatives about her to focus on. - Eric
OTOH, from a purely sociological viewpoint... this is very similar to the whole "Obama is a Muslim" meme. One would think that the internet would be a powerful force in killing these stupid rumors, but instead it only seems to have an amplifying effect and manage to drag down our political discourse ever further. - Eric
I think it's quite relevant. Were it to be true it would a pretty giant deception, and a very creepy one at that. - Steve Isaacs
As a mother I totally understand if she lied to protect her daughter. As a citizen I don't want my Vice President committing fraud just for appearances or convenience sake. - Marianne Lenox
If true (and it's not), it means she lied about being the true parent of a baby in order to protect the reputation of her daughter - it's basically a sex scandal. I didn't care about Clinton's blow job, I don't care about Edwards', and I really don't care about this. It'd be great if politicians didn't lie *at all* - but there's bigger fish to fry than their sex lives, or their daughter's sex life, as the case may be. - Eric
Eric, I agree with Steve & Marianne: if it is true it matters b/c it speaks to the honesty of the woman. However, there is now enough speculatoin to at least warrant the question. Give her a chance to defend herself and then move on. In keeping with your pt, if Obama can be asked if he is a Christian this is fair game. But then barring proof, let it go. - Ruth Ferguson
Well Eric, I think you might have somewhat of a point in the comparison to the Clinton problem. I guess we don't yet collectively expect women to lie about things of this nature. - Ruth Ferguson
I also feel the legit issue of abuse of power is more important and likely true. - Ruth Ferguson
I agree with Marianne (except I'm not a parent, but understand the action) - Simian DA (Amber)
Andrew Sullivan's take on this - http://andrewsullivan.theatlan... - Andrew Burd
One difference regarding President Clinton: he lied under oath, which is a crime. Any lie, however, is a legitimate concern. I can't help think, though, people trying to bring Palin down are digging themselves a deep hole. - Charles LePage
http://www.digitaljournal.com/... "No matter how you do the math, there is no way a girl can be pregnant from 2006 to April of 2008. " - Charles LePage
thanks for that updated information Charles. Why couldn't the McCain campaign or the governor's office put an end to this? - Ruth Ferguson
Ruth: the article posted by Charles doesn't really resolve all the outstanding issues, and if the McCain/Palin campaign doesn't put the rumors to rest immediately by releasing the relevant medical records, you can draw the obvious conclusions. The story could be killed instantly with a snap of the fingers from Palin herself -- this is no big deal if the story is false. Just release the records and move on to issues of importance. - Sean McBride
Sean - I agree on both accounts. what I meant was at least part of the story seems to be resolved with the info about the picture. - Ruth Ferguson
