I never used much of the social aspects of google reader, other than following friends and occasionally sharing. It does seem like putting your entire social network in the hands of a corporation is risky, whether it be google or facebook or whomever. I was lucky enough to join a MUD back in the 90's that is now basically a social chat site. But we run our own software on our own servers, and I think that's what makes the difference. The site will only die when we're tired of maintaining it. Remember the brief life of Google Lively? Would it have fared better if they had released the software for anyone to run a server?
