"Vacationing in the south since leaving it almost a decade ago, my wife & I were searching for some southern BBQ in the area near my parents house without traveling far. I had found a listing for "Big…"

In their seminal paper "Flying in Tune: Sexual recognition in mosquitoes", Gabrielle Gibson and and Ian Russel from the University of Greenwich discovered an inspiring phenomenon: male mosquitoes change their buzzing frequency to match that of a female mosquito. This synchronization brings their wing beats to within a millisecond or less of one another. The authors suggest that this phenomenon facilitates the mosquitoes' ability to copulate mid-flight. We take advantage of this phenomenon to engage the mosquitoes in song, inspired by the North Indian classical vocal tradition of Dhrupad.

"WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Pentagon will lift its longtime ban on media coverage of the flag-draped coffins of war victims arriving at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, according to a senior U.S. defense official with direct knowledge of the decision. The coverage must be approved by the victims' families, however. Advocates of opening the base to coverage say the unmarked coffins make it impossible to identify specific remains. Defense Secretary Robert Gates is to announce the change at a news conference at 2 p.m. ET, the senior official said. He ordered a review after President Obama asked for more information on the long-standing policy."

I do not agree but I respect your opinion.

War ain't pretty. People die. Why do we pretend otherwise?
- Derrick
Perhaps getting editors to actually run photos like this as well? Or better yet, photos of civilian casualties and the true imagery of war on US front pages? Thus, no longer allowing the people who write the checks and cede the power to see war as an abstraction, a video game? Let's try that. k thx
- Anthony Citrano
This is something that's been bothering the Partner-in-crime since he moved here from Canada. He always felt like by not showing the actual cost of war "they" (govt and/or media) were trying to downplay it (or as Anthony said, keep it as an abstraction).

-1 to everyone who wants to make the death of a soldier a political thing.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Mark I agree, but see nothing political in this thread.
- Anthony Citrano
I was more thinking of some of the more partisan of the MSM, like FOX or NPR.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
One of the things our guys are fighting for is free speech for everyone. That includes people we hate like the Westboro scumbags. I detest them, but they have rights and they're pretty harmless - I don't think they're winning many hearts and souls, from what I understand it's almost completely one family.
- Tad
Did you just call NPR partisan, Mark? They are the least partisan of any of the news outlets.
- Alex Scoble
I think I'm going to have to agree with TOB here. Those Westboro people disrupt burials. If I'm at my loved ones grave and some SOB's start chanting their bullshit as I'm trying to say the hardest goodbye of all. A slap isn't enough. I'd deliver a severe beat down.
- Berial
Well said, Jilly. The true cost of war isn't in the number of dead. It's in the number of people affected by the war in total. And quite frankly the 20k+ seriously injured is a higher cost than the death toll, but we hardly ever talk about the seriously wounded.
- Alex Scoble
This shouldn't be seen as a political gesture. It is just a rectification of one of the many ways in which the previous administration sought artificially to distort the availability of information. If every such move were condemned as a "politicization", every bad thing an administration does that can pretend to be patriotic would become set in stone. Unfortunately there's no way to carry out this correction without it becoming news itself for a while.
- Tim Ostler
YEAH no more censorship on the realities of the costs of war

Scott is was stopped during Bush Sr. Term. There was a split screen of caskets while Bush Sr was doing a press conference. The problem was while one screen showed the caskets, Bush Sr was smiling at a joke from one of the press corp. The two images didn't go over well
- Joe K
@ Scott. I totally understand the desire to make people think about it. Most never even let the coffins enter their conscious. However, I believe the families should have the choice, public or private. Plenty of families will still want the homecoming to be as public as a parade. We certainly honor the living, why not a little public honoring of the dead?

feedly weaves your favorite content into a magazine-like start page. based on Google Reader, Twitter and Firefox.
- Bram Pitoyo
Feedly has reduced my RSS browsing times by almost 2/3rds. Being able to set up different views(photos/vids) for categories the interesting 'Explore' feature, and the easy & non-intrusive FriendFeed/Twitter/Reader capabilities have made me an RSS reading powerhouse.

I used to get my cheesesteaks at Philly Bilmo's in Vancouver. Best I could find out there that was as good as the Philly cart in Downtown. There's also Philadelphia's on Milwaukie which I was just at today :) Both of these places also have TastyCakes, Bilmo's has a wider range of sammiches than Philadelphia's.

Thanks. I'll have to try those next time I'm in the 'Couve. :-)

I really love ctags inside of vim. Quite handy. Combine the Vim ctags plugin with Vim's Ctrl+P completion and you've got all the things I love about bigger(Eclipse) IDE's. I think I've even used that colorscheme for a while at some point.

I like the way twhirl presented information. Here's a similar interface but for RSS, which I've been looking for since I ran in to twhirl.
