Thanks to everybody who participated in the MOBhat experiment. I'll be turning it off for a while. I'll be sending you a survey. Please fill it out! Thanks again!
Please post the results if you can - John Graham
Gary
oh that's why???never mind my last e mail - got ubiquity but missing my hats

Jay
uh oh, did friendfeed's redesign mess with mobhat or did I turn it off somehow??
Austin King
Saxtus, I suck and had a bug in the account setup. Can you recreate your MOBhat account?
First, you don't suck. What I did that triggered the bug? Second, I did recreated my account and seemed to work at Saturday but now that I am trying to login from work and I am unable to. In fact I had to disable MOBhat so I can read my FF feeds because login dialog was popping up constantly. Now I suck! - Saxtus
The bugs was that FF which are capitialized like Saxtus are okay in someplaces and then saxtus in others in the FF system. Totally not your fault. I'll look into the login issues. Thanks! - Austin King

There are some changes to the UI. Using SocialTags consistently as the terminology for a "hat" or "facet". Updated the SocialTags switcher (next to MOBhat logo) and the Retag this item (in More menu by an item).
Robert Tyler
OK, I think that this app has significant potential and is very well engineered.
Full disclosure, Robert is my homie from way back! - Austin King

Ideally I think the need to retag items would be decreased if I had more insight into my current facet (without having to go into FF). I suggested a FireFox add-on with a pull-down menu that showed my current tag and the option to switch.
I've shyed away from using the Ubiquity command line, but it seems like if you make it through the MOBhat install gauntlet, you'll be able to handle it. What do you think? I can add a command socialtags that shows this info and allows you to pick a new one. - Austin King

What if I want to tag one thing under two tags?
For the current phase of the experiment, it's out of scope. This is an excellent idea though. I would want this eventually. It makes the UI a lot more complicated. - Austin King

On Viewing the page - I find myself confused at what Im looking at... so some suggestions - remove the hidden items (currently marked with a hat) from the list view, only show those in the current facet, users can use the top bar to show/hide other items
I can remove all the in page grouped items hidden hat icon/links, since this is already at the top of the page as "Hidden Below" links. Does everybody think that would be useful? - Austin King
Patty O'Hara
I looked at this with Ozten tonight and had some feedback/idears, what do you all think? (see my next few posts)
Thanks for all this input! Comments below. Looking forward to others thoughts as well. - Austin King

On Tagging existing Items - Add Most popular Social Tags (from my friends) to the picker so I may pick the same ones if we have similar interests. - Allow me to create a new tag directly in the menu where I am retagging an item - Refresh page upon saving the retagged item (so I know it worked) - What if I want to tag one thing under two tags?...
Adding a list of the most popular tags would be pretty easy and would help people discover tags. - Austin King
Patty O'Hara
- soup up the information in the top bar - show the tag, the number of items, and the last updated date. - provide the option to show/hide uncategorized items - since this is not a facet, you can visually treat that a little differently
Wooster P Doodles
Oh, hey. You guys saw me in the video?

What do I do next? Make sure you set up some feeds in FriendFeed. You can add Flickr, Delicious, whatever you use on a regular basis. Visit my profile or any of the members in this room. This way you can see lots of different MOBhat's and see how the filtering works.
Austin King
I'll be monkeying around this morning... let me know if I break something :)
Gary
geek
I am tooling around- both MOBhat & ff are new to me and I'm not to 0101 savy.....i see a new hat category and learning- back to the videe - Gary
Congrats, I see you have some items and have switch hats a few times. Starving Artist and Geek. - Austin King
Gary
I've crossed the t's and doted the i's and now i too have and internetgeek hat-fits like a fez. nice work pig!
and the ubiquity is ga ga a temptress that may have my email address in a tizzy....oh you seductive gmail - Gary
Gary
so i'm almost there- don't see the MOBhat or don't know how to activate it
you need to visit a stream most likely. Try Austin's http://friendfeed.com/ozten - John Graham
thanks - Gary
Tom McIntire
OK - I feel really stoopid - I can't find the link to get my status stories in here even though I keep clicking on the help file
There is an error when I go to your profile... so MOBhat chokes and doesn't load on your profile rico99. I'll look into it. - Austin King
The issue was that Ubiquity wasn't installed. Tom is up and running now. The code doesn't handle a user who has no facets... I'll fix that. A "happy page" would be good that diagnoses these install issues. - Austin King
John Graham
The "Refacet this entry" is under the More dropdown menu with each entry.

This is really helpful, thanks John. - Austin King
Zach Hale
The other thing I can't figure out is how to classify unclassified items. You do it in the video, but I can't remember how it was done. It's not very apparent in the interface.
Click the More menu, then Refacet - it has a little hat next to it. You can ONLY reclassify your items. - Austin King
Austin King
Next feature - would you rather see 1) real-time work, 2) have the "power off" button stay powered off between page loads, or 3) have faster page loading of MOBhat? or 4) Something else?
More Details on #1 - The real-time and even the general page updates sometimes blow away MOBhat from the screen. I need to handle this case, so that MOBhat will work on the new beta version of FriendFeed. - Austin King
I'd prefer 1). Thanks for asking! - John Graham
John Graham
Signed up! I love Ubiquity so I am happy to try it out, even though I usually use a site-specific browser for FF. Kudos on the neat idea!
Ok, I'm using Ubiquity 0.1.8... could that be the reason I'm not seeing anything? - John Graham
No, that's fine. I'll update system requirements page tonight. I am on 1.8 also. Try going to my profile. http://friendfeed.com/ozten - Austin King
Yep, it works! Thanks! I was in beta site which may not work. - John Graham
Great! I updated the homepage to say the latest instead of a specific version. - Austin King
Jeff Balogh
Is it really only for FF 3.0.8? I'm on 3.1b3 and I'm not seeing anything. There are two unittest fails: Warning: Actual=(ozten) but Expected=(oztenz): 'We should still find username' Warning: assert programming error, unknown type for actual=undefined expected=undefinedmessage=null
3.1bs works, I am running that sometimes for better Ubiquity errors. The unit tests are okay ( I was testing the assertEquals and checked it in, no bosley to kick me). Can you hit my profile page and wait a few seconds? http://friendfeed.com/ozten - Austin King
It's odd but the Firebug with tracing enabled seems to fix this... Like http://getfirebug.com/release... If I can isolate the issue i'll fix it or file a bug. - Austin King
Austin King
Here is how to switch hats, define new ones, and delete old ones.
SocialTagsToggler.jpg
Finding the way you create and delete hats is a problem. I think there needs to be a better hint than just the drop down arrow. I'm open to ideas. The way it currently works is you click the word next to the logo which has a little black arrow and your cursor turns into a menu cursor. - Austin King
Kiam
Starting to try this out; I've been looking for some sort of activity stream filter for a long time
Zach Hale
Lookin' good! I've noticed some glitches with friendfeed losing the widget when it does it's autoupdating and it's a shame it doesn't load faster :P but it looks great! How are hats defined? It seems magical in the screencast and I'm wondering why so many of my contacts' other items aren't organized into hats. I'm also a little bit frustrated that...
I'm noticing the homepage of friendfeed is especially slow. Loading someone's profile seems much faster. I will look into that. - Austin King
You define new hats with the "SocialTags Picker". Your Current Facet is "Webdev" and there is a little arrow next to it. See my comment to Kiam below. Also I have a screenshot at the bottom of this page. It's a usability issue :) - Austin King
John Graham
Can we make the tags case insensitive? My WebDev doesn't match with your Webdev. Just a thought.
ya, I'll fix that soon. - Austin King
Kiam
How do I wear a hat so that I can post?
So where it says "InternetGeek" and a little arrow. This is your current hat. Click it and a dialog appears "All Facets". This is the Hat switcher. You can create a new hat in the text box "Create A new Facet". I should rename this to "All SocialTags" and "Create a new SocialTag" - Austin King
