Btw: I went to Åland once. Group of islands inbetween Sweden & Finland. 6.500 Islands. I never got further than the harbour because of my never lasting problem with being away from home. But at least I came to realise that the long journey was worth it, although I stayed there for just 2 nights (= 1 full day). I'd love to go back there again.

I would not be surprised if parts of OpenMoko work at some point especially given people already getting NES and PSX up and running on the Pre already. It is not inconceivable that some enterprising chap with the right libs and wrappers could potentially get iPhone apps on the Pre given the similarity between the hardware of the phones.

All phones were spoken for by 8:10am or so. They are putting people on waitlists and will call as phones become available.

Registering the phone is taking quite a while as the systems are bogged down. The store is adequately staffed just not enough inventory or fast signup. Palm representative on hand to speak with customers.

First impression of the phone is that it is much smaller than the 700p even though it is not that much shorter minus the antenna. Battery seems a lot more compact and not clear how it compares with older Treos. Will be getting an extended battery if it becomes available. Battery door is delicate but impressively moulded. Phone was 50% charged when unpacked but went to 100% in a short period after charging.

Tip: Slide the phone out before trying to remove the door. There's a little bit more room to maneuver. The Micro USB door is not easy to get off and will probably end up being broken on many phones.

Tip: Clean up your Google Contacts BEFORE adding to the Pre. Unfortunately, the Pre imports All Contacts instead of My Contacts from Google which results in a mess of contacts showing up in your addressbook such as temporary Craigslist addresses. There has been a bug report filed with Palm but this needs to be surfaced to them as a major bug. Contact cleanup also means less to download. OTOH, I am told that the iPhone suffers from this too. Can someone verify?

While the update is installing, Sprint MiFi is available in stores although quantities are limited. If you buy a broadband card at the same time as your Pre, Sprint will take another $50 off. Existing exotic pre-Pre unlimited plan for $90/mth did not port over to the Pre so now on the Everything plan.

Tip: Google Contacts cleanup ahead of time really helps. Also, try to do the initial sync over wifi. Discovered an erroneous contact after first sync; corrected in Google Contacts and resynchronized to have it magically fixed on the Pre. So it looks like sync is doing "the right thing". Have not tested to see if contacts updated in Pre will update in the other direction.

karim, the time before last, the dental hygienist did a double take when she saw my gums and said she'd only seen gums so pink in textbooks...granted, i think her textbook days were probably not that far behind her, but it was still maybe the best compliment i got that year... :)

Hutch: Wish I were in shape. Sigh... Started running again & I can only do a few miles. Once upon a time marathons were ok. Time to work up to road race. There was a 75-yr-old guy (now probably 85) who was always faster than me. My goal was to get faster times than him. Also met a guy 100+ who was gunning for the "oldest guy to run a marathon" record. Unfortunately, there was a guy 5 years older who was still running...waiting for that guy to die... :-)

@HC--Ditto. And this is what inspires me to really be healthy and active. I am 29 and for the first time ever, I am realizing my body has a mind of its own--damn it! But seriously, I would love to be like those older runners, beating people much younger than I, like Mitchell. j/k Mitch ;)

In 1992-95, there was a 65-yr-old lady who was like "smoked lightning". Her running times were also better than my fastest-ever times (even my age 18-25 times...) I've been out of running for 10 years, but I'm willing to bet people now are in even-better shape. It's a weird dichotomy. As a population, we're now super-obese (~25-35%) but we also have more super-fit. Maybe like with FriendFeed, the information-junkies can learn even faster...while "joe shmoe" thinks there are 48 states in the US.

At UCLA in the gymnastics "open gym", I was telling someone the story of how "48% of Americans don't know that England is an island"...and one of my friends said "I think I should take a geography class". I was looking for the nearest hole to crawl into.... :-( The average person (not the IQ 120 UCLA type) is ...very... uninformed & FriendFeed would be totally overwhelming (unlike how it delights the information junkie addicted to reading and learning)...

Robert. Cool time! As a former 115 lb high school geek, I was only able to eeek out a 3:54 in the 1994 Los Angeles Marathon. My one & only time running more than 21 miles. There was a super-fat lady who I just passed a mile before the finish line. Embarassing. I could barely run 400m in 60 sec. Best event would have been 800m 2:24 (like a slow female college Div 2 runner). 100m at 14 sec. An Asian with no sprint speed.
