"After much mulling and culling, we've come up with our list of the twenty best books of the decade. The list is weighted towards science fiction, but does have healthy doses of fantasy and horror. And a few surprises. This list is alphabetical, and not in order of awesomeness. All are equally great and worthy of your attention. In deciding which would make the list and which wouldn't, we weighed not only our opinions, but also those of the critical community at large - looking at how each book was received by reviewers for mainstream publications as well as science fiction magazines. There were many, many books we love that almost made the cut - if we'd let ourselves go it would have been more like the 100 best books of the decade. Also, all of the books on this list were originally published in English. Regrettably I'm not conversant enough in global science fiction to make an educated "best of" list that includes works written in other languages. I hope those of you who are will add your picks to the comments below."

must say that the list is awkward, with some important books missing, ah, well..

I never care about such lists because nobody can possible read the thousands of books coming out each month. So how can you tell which are the best? Maybe for SciFi, but since when is Harry Potter science fiction? Anyway, I only know 6 of the books, read 4 of them. I wasn't impressed by Glasshouse at all. Rainbows End is superb. Look to Windward is also really good. No Greg Egan, no Alastair Reynolds, Richard Morgan, Karl Schroeder :-(
- Alexander Kruel
yes I pretty much agree with everything you wrote, but they got my attention because of one extraordinary book by Ted Chiang- if you havent read it.. its high on my recommendation list
- Wildcat
Ok, just ordered it at Amazon.de. 2-4 weeks for some reason...
- Alexander Kruel
I got Pattern Recognition in German but haven't read it yet. Also Execution Channel...
- Alexander Kruel
wow! 2-4 weeks? in our age that is like eternity.. .-) ever since I started using the Kindle I got used to instantaneous, well almost..
- Wildcat
No Kindle for Germany yet...though they now ship it international but you can only get English books. And right now I have enough printed ones I haven't read yet. So not worth it at this moment.
- Alexander Kruel
I haven't read up on e-readers at all. So I don't know. I doubt it. Once this stuff is more prevalent I'll get one for sure though.
- Alexander Kruel
Very strange list indeed, a bit of a shame as there are some great ones on it like Ted Chaing's and seeing there books like Harry Potter people might ignore it all together.
- Mohir
I guess they tried to cater to as large an audience as possible, in the process eliminating the high end for rating..

the Orbit UK Team has banded together to bring you a retrospective on what made 2009 another great year. The short answer of course is great authors, Global Vision, plenty of awards.
