Which got bought by Google right? I have one, when I did the trial thingie, voicemail was rad, fully functional.
- Zu from AOD
My current "landline" is GV routed through Gizmo5

I kinda think you do, based on the stories I read today. (And it makes sense; American carriers are generally underpricing data plans and overpricing voice, so it would be pretty unlikely if T-Mo would let you skip paying for voice.)

Actually, the N1 works without a SIM card --- it'll hook up to your WiFi network. Not that it'll do much good as a phone without one...

You could use GV or Skype, right? But yeah, in my experience useable wifi is not common enough to replace a data plan.

GV requires voice minutes. I haven't seen a Skype application on any smart phone worth a damn.

The only mobile VoIP app I know is Fring (who I will be QAing with two people who have Nexus Ones in the next day or two) As for data* only? Well: http://img.skitch.com/2010010...

fring works on the Droid with GV & Gizmo account. Dialing out is a pain since you need to use the browser to place a call. When you make a call, GV will call your Gizmo number and fring will ring. I was able to do to the same with a jailbroken iPhone a while back using backgrounder, fring, and Safari. As for data only, I don't think you can get a normal cell phone data plan by itself. It would need to be a plan that would go with a USB modem/datacard.

Oh hmm that sounds like a lot of effort.

Ya hopefully Google will add more support for Gizmo since they bought them. I don't think carriers would be happy though.
- Rodfather
I tried Fring on Android. Can't get it to work.

Bummer. Thanks for the update -- super helpful.

I have been wondering the same thing, how to get around these freakin' cell phone companies. I was trying a Gizmo / GV thing but kind of cumbersome. Thanks for this discussion.
