U.S. officials angry: Israel doesn’t back stance on Russia - Diplomacy and Defense Israel News | Haaretz - http://www.haaretz.com/news...
"White House and State Department officials in Washington have built up a great deal of anger over Jerusalem's "neutrality" regarding Russia's invasion of the Crimean Peninsula. Senior figures in the Obama administration have expressed great disappointment with the lack of support from Israel for the American position on the Ukraine crisis and with the fact that the Israeli government puts its relations with the United States and with Russia on the same plane." - Sean McBride from Bookmarklet
"A senior Israeli official said that Israel's absence from the United Nations vote was viewed around the world as an extremely irregular measure, a departure from a long-standing Israeli policy of voting with the United States in the UN. While the Americans viewed Israel's behavior as ungrateful, in light of Washington's unshakable support for Jerusalem in the UN, in the Kremlin and in the Russian media Israel's action was seen as an expression of support for Moscow, or at the very least a lack of opposition to the invasion of Ukraine." - Sean McBride
The comments are insightful, but imo most miss the major point: Many of the Ukrainian oligarchs have ties to Israel. Nuland was not acting on behalf of US interests so much as on behalf of international banking interests. USA is the enforcement mechanism, but the intention is for Israel to reap major benefits. - ChasMark
note this very wise comment: "What's good for the goose is good for the gander By Dave Kreiselman 13 Apr 201410:05AM Nu, So what happens when the Americans begin to recognize that Israeli security interests are inimical to their own and then formulate a foreign policy that reflects that new reality?" - ChasMark
nb. note, however, that "Dave Kreiselman" does not seem to recognize that US has no interests in Ukraine; US was/is being used by Nuland Kagan to enforce neoconish- Israeli interests. To the extent that US, misunderstanding that they are dupes in this embroglio, threaten the relationships of Ukraine-Israel oligarchic relationships, Israel will resist. - ChasMark
Key point: whenever the United States deviates from Israel on policy issues, many Israelis threaten to shift their allegiance to China, Russia or some other nation which is in direct competition with the United States -- which gives the impression that they are a highly unreliable ally and do not in fact share our values and interests. This kind of behavior could leave Israel completely isolated in the world. - Sean McBride
