The intractable conundrum that is my life is the quintessential enigma of a metaphorical ambivalence. Mostly I'm a liberal atheist who longs for Quality.
As some of you may have noticed, I've not been around much. I have just not been in a very social place. I think I have needed some time to just not think about much of anything. But please know that many of you have been in my thoughts a great deal, and I hope that all is well in your world. I'll come back around again.
Power is out. No A/C and no lights. It's really warm in here. It's getting too dark to read. Less than 3 hrs of battery life. Sure do hope the power comes back on at some point before I lose the laptop. :-(
Know what's funny? I had read hours ago, to expect it around 5:33pm. So when I woke up at 5:45, I was bummed I missed it. Laying here in bed, BOOM BOOM! I looked at my floor. It sounded like someone knocking about in my basement.
- Anika
I had just read someone's post that it should be expected before 5:53, and I thought something like, "Cool! That's soon! I'll wait for…" and it happened. Shook the whole apartment building.

i remember watching one of the shuttles coming in across the northern Texas night sky for a landing in Florida in the early 90s. it looked like Disney special effects from the original Fantasia film, just surreal: a shower of iridescent sparkles spreading behind a brightly glowing point and a ghostly trail behind.

For me it's Blade Runner, and I basically posted this to confirm or overturn what I suspected would be the case, namely that Blade Runner would rule the comments despite The Crow being a well loved movie.
- James (!?)
And just in case that came out wrong: I loved The Crow. But I still LOVE Blade Runner.
- James (!?)
The Crow was a pretty neato flick and all, but, you no, frickin Blade Runner, man.
- Christopher A Carr
Right after the comic it's based on, the Crow owes everything else to Blade Runner.
- Rob H.
@Christopher: I am so glad I never saw that version of Brazil! A happy ending (of sorts) was called for in The Fisher King, but no way would it have been right for Brazil or 12 Monkeys.
- James (!?)
I didn't even know there was another ending for Brazil. How awful.
- Eph Zero
Think there are four cuts, actually, Criterion, Brit, American and Sheinberg...
- Christopher A Carr
Blade Runner by a mile. Even though The Crow looks great -- but the original Crow graphic novel is better than the movie, and it's the GN that's Blade Runner's equal.
- Dennis Jernberg
*BUMP* up that smile! I'm smiling right now as I write this (even if you don't know why… shhhh). I'd love to know that you had reason to smile today, too. ^_^
- James (!?)
:D hot cinnamon rolls and cooler repair - I'm a happy, smilin camper

I'm going to do something that may shock some people: I'm choosing Ghost Dog over Apocalypse Now. If it comes down to which DVD you'd pop into your player right now, or first, it would be Ghost Dog. So I'm picking it. But understand that I love both these movies intensely, and Apocalypse Now will always stand among the best movies I've ever seen.
- James (!?)
I actually haven't seen either one, amazingly enough. But I've voted against a lot of "great movies" for that exact reason.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
DO ANYBODY NO WHY JANDY MISSED THESE MOVIES?!?
- James (!?)
HA. I missed Apocalypse Now because I have seen woefully few 1970s movies. And Ghost Dog...I dunno. Just missed it. I've actually only seen one Jarmusch movie (Broken Flowers). I need to get on that. As well as Apocalypse Now, obviously.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Oh, I'd say so… Both, certainly, definitely, absolutely, yes. There are a lot of great `70s movies, too. What did you think of Broken Flowers, btw?
- James (!?)
Apocalypse Now. There are only a handful of films that I would put ahead of it.
- Michael Fidler
Off to work I go! ::strrrretch:: *Yawn* ::blink blink squint:: Yup. Off to work. Hhhyeaaawn.
Its good to share life with friends, carne & bones, blood & real faces, smiles and real tears, everyone need to touch reality... You must have a good time. Salutes!

"Do you think it's unacceptable that we live in a country where people are forced to sleep on the streets, scrape to make ends meet, and choose between medical care and paying rent? Then congratulations, you are now a homeless advocate!"

Let me just say that Adam Lee, of the Daylight Atheism blog, is one very nice person. Affable is the word. And all the other guests at the dinner were also kind and good company. I had a very nice evening, and only wish it could have laster longer. :-)
Good to hear you had an enjoyable evening, James.
- Derrick
But more importantly, what did you eat and drink?
- Cristo
Thanks. :-) Um, I had coffee and a shot glass full of something with chocolate and something custardy but like melted marshmallows. I have no idea what it was but it tasted good. Some folks were trying to feed me all night, but I cannot not take advantage of such offers generally and so I didn't.
- James (!?)
At 6PM tonight I get to meet one of my all-time favorite bloggers for dinner at PF Chang's, and all I will be able to get is water. #brokeasssituation#butthebillsarepaid
There's a reservation for PF Chang's at 6PM (for 12 people). I can't miss meeting this one, because he doesn't live in California or visit here often. It's a rare opportunity. I'm just glad the parking should be free. (I want to hang out with you so bad, Nakachi and Anika.)
- James (!?)
Yup. One of my fave bloggers is coming to Vancouver in a couple of weeks. I can't afford anything, so I'm playing it off as "I don't like sushi, but I'll meet you for a drink." I feel your pain.
- cecily
Oh these tough times we live in! But—I am truly grateful for the opportunity I have, nonetheless, to meet someone I admire and respect. That shall be food and drink enough for me, I think. May we all find better days ahead.
- James (!?)
This is why I always open my house for meetups. I know people are broke. Often it's cheaper to let people bring a side dish over letting them stress about how they'll pay their portion of the meal.
- Anika
Yes, but this was 40 in one go! And it's always wonderful, even when it's only one. :-)
- James (!?)
I want sexting! I want it! I want it! Give it to meeeeee! ::giddy:: (Not aimed at anyone in particular. I just saw the word used and realized that I'm hungry.)
Usual Suspects.. One of the greatest movie I have ever seen. Watched many times in different modes and I'm still fuzzy about the overal story.
