it's really hard to find new, good podcasts. Just went through 2 pages of search results here at FriendFeed and didn't find anything I wanted to listen to more than Stack Overflow and twit. Those i already knew about. :( What's your iTunes podcast window look like? hint hint, suggestions?
I enjoy BOL too. Been a fan since the beginning. However, if you're looking for something different, try On Digital Media http://odmcast.com (shameless plug ;-)

from twhirl
NOVA Science Now, Scientific American, The Naked Scientists, the Pragmatic Podcasts, Hanselminutes, SE-Radio (though I skip most of them), Core Intuition, Late Night Cocoa, Mac Developer Network, Grammar Girl
- DGentry
NPR's All Songs Considered, NPR's Science Friday, Magnum in Motion
- Sam Grover
I love BOL (Buzz Out Loud)...also Loaded, Twit, The Social Geeks (of course), Diggnation, Grammar Girl, The Answer Bitch, LostCasts (when LOST returns that is), ReadBurner, CNET TV, CNET Mailbag (Molly Wood is damn funny) and the occasional Tekzilla and Security Now.
- Sarah Perez
I listen to the Gillmor Gang (I'll be on tomorrow at 1 p.m. from China, by the way) and TWiT. Otherwise I "snack" on other audio shows here and there.
- Robert Scoble
NY Times Front Page, Wall Street Journal Tech News Briefing (both are good first thing in the morning), NewsGang Live / Gillmor Gang. Leo Laporte has a few good ones like TWiT, MacBreak Weekly, Windows Weekly, Security Now.
- Rolf Schewe
I feel bad for not listening to TWiT very much while everyone else does. It is in my podcatcher but I almost always listen to it part way and then move on. The podcast is a lot of fun, but it just feels like BOL got the same things already and talked about them days earlier. I have a lot of podcasts (I do love NPR and I've found a number of great book world and fiction podcasts) and I'd rather listen to something new.
- Aram Zucker-Scharff
from twhirl
Aram: I understand that. I don't get to all of them either. usually I just listen to the ones that get talked about on Twitter or FriendFeed. Speaking of which, http://www.fastcompany.tv is my video podcast.
- Robert Scoble
These are all great suggestions -- I just scarfed up a mess of them and added them to iTunes. Thanks!
- Mitch Wagner
If you're not already listening to This American Life you're missing the best radio show ever. Fresh Air is good, too. And Wait Wait Don't Tell Me.
- Leo Laporte
If you like listening to non-work related podcasts (i.e. NOT tech), check out The Moth. Also This American Life.
- Aaron Uhrmacher (@aaronu)
"WFMU's Best Show On WFMU" is HILARIOUS! I also like Studio 360 and many of the ones mentioned above.
- Brad Williamson
In the same vein as WFMU are the podcasts from RESONANCE FM, "the art of listening"
- Brad Kligerman
Oh my - where's NPR's "Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me", and NPR's Car Talk, and Leo's "Security Now!" podcast? And if you're not only twisted, but actually sprained, check out Merlin Mann's podcast "You Look Nice Today".
- mamapadawan
If you are into Social media, PR and communication, then check out For Immediate Release (FIR). Shel Holtz and Neville Hobson host this bi-weekly podcast and it is without a doubt the best communications podcast out there.
- morten saxnaes
NPR's Wait Wait and This American Life make it to my podcast list. I'm learning Danish too, and there is a great podcast called "CopenhagenCast" that is a great learning tool for the language.

Skeptics Guide to the Universe is excellent, one of the best podcasts out there. Also, Seminars about Long Term Thinking is often great.

Savage Love (sex and relationships, about 35 minutes, weekly), Memory Palace (quirky history stories, about 5 minutes, published irregularly), 60 Second Psych (short stories about psychology, published irregularly), and I love, love, love Tank Riot (kind of indescribable--runtime 1 hour+, published every two weeks or month or so by three guys in Wisconsin), and also one called Copper Robot by some guy named "Mitch Wagner."
- Mitch Wagner
The Moth, The Memory Palace, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, The Dinner Party Download, The Sound of Young America, Obsessives (video by CHOW), Studio 360, TED (audio or video), Third Coast International Audio Festival, Current Vanguard (video), Frontline WORLD (video), World Cafe.

This is the end of an era. His health must be pretty bad at this point. I wish Apple would have just taken the "we don't comment on the health of our executives" position rather than lie and lie.
- drew olanoff
:( what can you do. the company has been doing it's best to prolong the inevitable. there shouldn't be any panic in the market.
- Faramarz Hashemi
This is certainly not a good sign for him. Apple will survive and likely thrive; he may not.
- Karoli
Last time he stepped down apple went to crap I hear, I'm not happy at all.
- orionstarr
Sold my stock momments after the announcement was made that he wasn't going to be at MacWorld. Got around $88.00 a share. Seems now to have been prudent.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Will he be resuming the CEO post then, or just sit on the board when he returns at the end of June?
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Steve's health isn't good -- anyone could see it. The exec moves over the past several months were removing contenders for the successor. Steve cultivated people with similar passions, but only one could win. Like Mac design. One ring to bind them all. It was Steve, now he won't be back.
- Mitch Ratcliffe
I hate to be cavalier, but my Mac is still running and my iPhone still works too... Time will tell if the board learned from what happened last time Steve left. WE should also be aware that the circumstances were VERY different last time.
- Brian Roy
so much for scoble's yogurt guy (ducking)
- Dave Winer
OK folks, lets all take a pill and calm down. While there is no reason to think Jobs won't be back, Apple will survive without him. To say that Apple is going to fail without him is an insult to all the creative, intelligent people at Apple who actually design and build the products.
- Kenton
CNBC says that the stock should reopen in extended trading in 10 minutes at 5pm EST.
- Thomas Hawk
There´s a rumour Jobs may be back in a white bionic iSuit already in March at 110% strength ! buy... buy my stock.. nah. ;) (Seriously hope he´ll recover though, whenever).
- Thomas Bøhm
Stock and geeky concerns aside, I gotta wish Jobs the best.
- Tom Landini
We have 5 months it install cut/paste in on the iPhone and develop a 2 button mouse, go go!
- Matthew DeVries
Matthew - when you're done can I have Flash? EDIT: Mona rightly points out that this was a tactless comment. Oops.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
@Kenton; Sure but the market will overreact, hence there's money to be made.
- Steven Cains
I agree with @Kenton, Apple isn't only Jobs.
- Thom Allen
For investment purposes, people have to assume he won't be back, because a week ago he said he wasn't going anywhere. But agree with Landini, I wish Steve a long healthy life.
- Mitch Ratcliffe
This and now "Kahn" died today? What is Geekdom coming to?
- Jared B. Luther
This man is ILL and you guys are discussing FLASH ON A PHONE? Are you KIDDING ME?
- Mona Nomura
This is the next move in a series of calculated plans to have Steve step down. 5 months will be permanent.
- Spencer
I think it has been pretty crummy how Apple has bene trying to hide this from investors, so now many of them are blindsided. I hope Steve recovers but frankly Apple needs to ditch him now... no one can trust anythign Apple says about him.
- Soulhuntre

Jobs become obsolete - Talent prevails (Ad on msnbc.com a couple of days back, truly not my words.)
- Tomi Itkonen
Damn. In the end this won't matter at all. Hoping for the best personally for His Jobness though!
- Mike Flynn
There is a time and place to discuss certain things. The thread is about Steve Jobs, his health, and him stepping down to go on medical leave. That is like going to a funeral and small talking about the person who passed away's funeral expenses. Disgusting and tactless.
- Mona Nomura
Apple stock opening now. Trading around 76.
- Thomas Hawk
On search.twitter.com/?q=Steve%20Jobs you can only go back to &page=100 (100 pages back chronologically) and the oldest tweet I could see had a link to Thomas' FF post right here where we're all commenting.
- Micah Wittman
gfurry: Were it anyone else, you could suspect the Vegan thing, because it's not easy and you have to be very smart and responsible to live a Vegan lifestyle and stay healthy, but Mr. Jobs has more money than god, he has top dieticians and cooks. It ain't the Vegan causing this.
- Matthew DeVries
Are you really asking for permission? Or looking to e-fight? -- rhetorical, which means you don't have to answer. Clearly you have no tact, so this conversation is done (from my end). Carry on.
- Mona Nomura
Mona, Chris Crocker, separated at birth? Have respect for the living, there's few things more rude than mourning someone who is ALIVE and well.

hector juarez, just what i was wondering. never bought stocks/shares before.
- Simon Wicks
Yep. $88.00 was a good price. I'll start buying at $50.00 right now. Offers?
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I don't really worry about occasional dropped stocks. It will go back up again. We're in a recession anyway... the stock was naturally better in August.
- Tamar Weinberg
yikes. It's sad that one person could make or break a brand like this.
- Tsega Dinka
Tsega: it's not sad. It's human. I know Michael Jordan. How about Tiger Woods. Barack Obama? Superstars cause stuff to happen.
- Robert Scoble
That's why there is a "face of the company" position. I hope for a speedy recovery...
- Anthony Farrior
Here's the bothersome part: Yes the stock is down, yes his health is bad, but why isn't the SEC looking in to the blatant lies told by both? I don't think I'll believe anything Apple says for a long time after this.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
@Robert Scoble, Warren Buffett would be a better example, he is to Berkshire what Steve is to Apple. Even with a team of experienced leaders to succeed him, he's still the figurehead.
- Steven Cains
If a person is ill, but otherwise neurologically intact, does that really mean they can't make decisions anymore? Not in my professional opinion.
- Victor Ganata
it's probably good for Jobs that this news is out. Not having to hide his health anymore means that's one big stressful thing to be out from under. Hopefully now that this news is out he can distance himself a bit from the intense scrutiny I'm sure he's been under and work on getting his health back.
- Thomas Hawk
A glass of wine every day is supposedly healthy... Maybe someone should start anonymous twitters.

Apparently Twitter engineers are following suit and taking a hiatus, too. I'm about to file divorce papers with Twitter and take my relationship with FriendFeed to the next level. Wish us luck.

Allen I cut back drastically on being in the conversation in general. My rate of Friendfeed wasn't nearly as heavy as on twitter, I'm sure I could calculate that too. I did keep my blog up, in fact gave it more attention.
- Jeremiah Owyang
yes it helps to make pauses on twitter (sometimes you could be tired of twitter) and other social media. Now I´m on twitter again ;-)
- Torsten Eckert
i did notice that - the blog increase
- Allen Stern
Application or Adaptation? Does anyone have any figures on usage rates of mobile applications versus adapted web sites providing the same functionality (e.g. gmail mobile app versus mobile gmail.com)?
It's taken Twitter quite a while to make any updates, especially compared to the pace with which FriendFeed does it. And...how about a little pirate on the Feeds blog? ;-)
- Hutch Carpenter
How dare they use the "Lipstick on a Pig"! An outrage! ;)
- Kreg Steppe
twitter looks more like FF now, and is still laggy (I saw that darn whale twice already today!) but it still has it's uses.

I couldn't make it through my day w/out IM. being able to chat w/ friends saves the little bit of sanity I still have.
- ♥patricia♥
HATE. i only talk to my husband via IM and only because he's in one room and i'm the other and i want to share or ask him something. friends, i'll do like i do on the phone and get off as quick as possible. i should add, that it's one thing to try to catch up with me, but if you're IMing me as a way to pass your work day, think again. that being said, i do love using IMVU.
- Admiral Anika
IM is Twitter for people who haven't gotten onto Twitter yet. ;-)
- Josh Bancroft
I use IM extensively for work and home. It's a lot easier to copy/paste info to each other. I've thought of setting up a Laconica server at work but haven't really found a good reason to.
- Rodfather
Hell, even my wife and I no longer chat on IM. We use a private room on FriendFeed for that.
- Akiva Moskovitz
helpful in some working environments to get people weened off sending 1000 emails a day. IM is more efficient to process than email in certain kinds of working conditions / groups. I have a 2 min rule though - if IM goes more than 2 min pick up the phone.
- Dean Terry
I use it only for work. It really cuts down on back and forth emails. When we were migrating our website, I used it constantly to communicate with the rest of the team.
- Laura Norvig
have it installed , dont use it ,, dont need it .. dont hate it
- johnpiercy
Please, PLEASE use IM instead of filling up my dadgummed Inbox! ARGH! I don't need your turnover reports or your requests to be added to this listserv or...ah, anybody seen my drugs? That's terrible. I'm worried that I'll now have to travel between FB, FF, and Reader in order to get my 2 cents in. Can't the APIs talk to eachother and leave the input method to user preference?
- Derick Valadao
I always use Facebook as an afterthought, but I'm always in and out of FF and Reader
- Ian May
i still use FB everyday... not all my friends have the time to spend on twitter, friendfeed or the like. let's not become snobs about it.
- Meghan
from Alert Thingy
Oh, I'm in no way being a snob about Facebook. I really just don't think to use it much of the time. FriendFeed is much faster so I tend to go for that first.
- Ian May
I tried my first comment on Facebook. Worked great...
- Mitchell Tsai
I've barely used Facebook since moving to FriendFeed. How ironic is it that Facebook heavily resembles FF now. I am disappointed with how difficult it is to read the news feed on Facebook. There is an image on the left. Oh wait, now there is an image on the right. Well now there is some indented text. Gah, now there are comments? It's just too noisy. It is almost a strain on my 21 year old eyes, and that is a shame. It needs to be cleaned up and displayed more elegantly.
- James Mowery
from twhirl
sorry, snob is a bit harsh.. i just meant smart people still use FB
- Meghan
from Alert Thingy
Personally, FB is good for looking at pictures and following peoples actions. FF is a living discussion. FB is not a living discussion, I don't think comments are going to help. They have comments on pictures and that wore off months ago.
- Ryan
And here: http://www.techwinter.com/2008... Nice article though and most of all I am glad we are drawing more attention to the predatory practices of NEW large organisations e.g. FB and GOOGLE. :)
- Roger Kondrat
I use FB quite a bit and I am glad they have improved their newsfeed. I would like to see them improve it some more.
- Bindu Reddy
I enjoy the comments as much if not more than the things being shared on FF. Why is it that FF has great discussions and FB has little to none. I think it is historical... people don't think of FB as a place to go have group discussions about things. If so, will FB be able to change this? Do you think they are in trouble if they can't.
- Michael Leggett
Comments on Facebook is actually pretty cool - FF'ers should not dismiss this feature so quickly. Facebook is copying FF - a true form of flattery! I think this is a really impressive feature improvement on Facebook...very interesting!!
- Susan Beebe
I agree Susan. But I don't see the comments picking up so far... maybe it is only a matter of time.
- Michael Leggett
Michael: I agree, it's too new of a feature to get noticed...but is is really awesome!! once folks figure it out... it will be a matter of time.
- Susan Beebe
If they can get the graffiti wall to have a blog interface and an RSS feed, that would be dreamy...
- sergiooo
Facebook has been forced into copycat mode. They are no longer the leader - just a follower of trends. They look like Plaxo and FF.
- Ernie Oporto
They'd do a lot better if they could get an API where the two could integrate together, and I could have a feed of both and comment on both and my comments would show up in the appropriate spots. Well, actually, *everyone* would do a lot better. And there would be so much more commenting !
- Justin Long
seems like a lot of door-knocking and how's-your-mum between the (growing) number of services. As long as of can keep ahead of the cruft eating the bulk of the bandwidth in the process. Or maybe I'm missing the point. FF was not cooperating (for me at least) via FB this morning. Now it simply states that I have actvity on FF with no detail.

I wore a tie last week on Thursday for ugly tie day at work (mine was bright yellow with orange horses.) We have themed Thursdays during the summer, this week is Hawaiian shirt day. Other than that it has been a couple of years.

Last May for a wedding - and then a year ago today (literally - the job interview for my current job). Outside of weddings, I don't foresee myself wearing one anytime soon either. I do miss it though. Getting dressed up is nice - but I have no need for that here....
- George Smith
not sure, a while to say the least. The best part? the last time I wore a tie because I had to has even been longer. When you don't have to do it, doing it once a while is not bothering me at all.

Whenever appropriate, 5 times a month ~, It looks like ties are still a part of work and social life based on the comments. When I put my mind to it, it feels good to get the garb on and head out.
- Vince Green
I wore one a couple years ago to a co-worker's wedding.
- Tad
9 years ago at a funeral... the ties belonged to the deceased and he wanted all of his friends to have one (male and female) so he gave them out just before he died of liver cancer... one week after his 50th birthday... Excellent guest post... Louis the guest bloggers are great, it's very refreshing.
- Mike Fruchter
Refreshing as in that it's not me, Mike? :-)
- Louis Gray
Louis refreshing in the fact that it gives you more daddy time, and less time blogging for the interim.. Oh now don't even go there :-)
- Mike Fruchter
It's probably more definitional -- people equate prominence with remoteness. And the more they think you're famous the less they treat you like a person. That's been my experience at industry parties. Every interaction is someone trying to right some wrong they think you did them. If they didn't like the way you said hello that'll turn into a flamey blog post. Makes you want to have some more distance. People still have 20th century attitudes about fame.
- Dave Winer
Applying that kind of thinking to blogging is the most ridiculous perversion. Blogging exists to empower everyone to speak their mind. To then impose a hierarchy on it is to subvert the whole idea! Anyway, look for ways you penalize people for expressing their opinions and you might find some of the more "prominent" people coming back into the flow.
- Dave Winer
your chart is wrong (at least for me it was/is) - the n00b stage is where i interacted even more than i do today by a small percentage
- Allen Stern
Louis, you've always struck me as a person seeking to hear diverse voices, your "Guest Posts" proves this. Nice way to widen the discussion.
- michael sean wright
I've never thought of the blogosphere as having a hierarchy. Obviously some bloggers are more interesting to more readers than some others. Some bloggers are simply better at writing - at getting their thoughts onto paper; much the same as some very intelligent people make lousy speakers the same goes for blogging.
- Ian May
Definitely not for me. When I was a newb, there was a lot less interaction. Back when I started doing serialized posts on websites, there were seriously about seven or eight people on the internet who'd read that stuff. I was elated when my hit-count went double digits.
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
ha, Louis. Branding the chart with the LG logo -- hardly n00bish. : )
- Robert Seidman
*This* is the great friend divide. Scoble got it all wrong.
- Benedikt Koehler
Thanks everyone for your comments. A lot of fun doing this. Dave Winer is definitely a Stage 4 guy, interesting to see his perspective. And Mark "Rizzn" - I remember well the thrill when hits went to double digits as well.
- Hutch Carpenter
Maybe it's also a country thing. In Germany there are no stage 4 bloggers. That's what I like about blogging in Germany ;-)
- Benedikt Koehler
Hutch - Good piece. I would argue that those promoting a specific product engage as many people as possible if they're going to use Twitter or other micro-blogging services (instead of some of the 'nutty' posts that sometimes look really bad). You never know who your next best promoter is. Agree totally that people shouldn't be insulted if they don't get an answer ... the first time :)
- Charlie Anzman
I'm blogging in Danish about Social media. I'm trying to get new people interested in the subject and my goal will newer be readers but the conversation and how I can push the Danish marketing community in a new direction. Every comment is still gold to me. I have my niche and I love it.
- morten saxnaes
Wow - Seth actually does get out there. Posted a comment to him.
- Hutch Carpenter
"I personally read and answer every single email I get " - seth. g - thats so true, I have emailed to him and he responds !
- Peter Dawson
Hutch, though not in called out in the post, in the original thread I did say Seth is *excellent* at interacting. There are different approaches to interacting. Seth posts his e-mail address on his blog, you don't. Neither approach wrong -- just different. As you note, Seth's posts do stand on their own. Maybe there's a blogging opportunity for someone to analyze Seth's posts and try to start the discussion..
- Robert Seidman
first off, it never ceases to amaze me that you can collect so many comments on friendfeed :). Secondly, I am curious how you are able to encourage people to guest post on yer blog, I have several peers with things to say and I have offered my blog as a forum but I have yet to get any takers

can't be leak in the main to the house unless the meter is immediately at the feeder. Has to be downstream of the meter for the city to quantify.
- Lee Skarbek
Pretty easy for a family of four to use that much water. My household used 713 gal per day last month! Add 4 showers, many toilet flushes, laundry, dish washing, irrigation of your lawn and vegetable garden if you have them (which is probably half or more of my water usage), and you get to 713 gallons pretty fast. I just paid last months H2O bill and it was $184 !!

no hierarchy....we all play nice together and share information with one another. Well kinda play nice...
- Dave Peck
there is a "hierarchy"? did I miss the memo?

I clean the series of tubes that is the internets... You'd be surprised what people try to push through here... yuck!

the Wheel is turning, the hamster dead and we're all STILL talking ?? The world is flat -there is no hierarchy. The Isreali, Russion /Chinese echelons, who code in their native lingo ..are kicking butt - and we still talking /thinking about "hierarchy" ??

Me too - there is a tremendous amount of overlap, and it's pretty dull.

Keep your eye on Microsoft. I think they are an up-and-coming player.
- Andrew Smith
While humurous, it's a good point. A lot of peopel have a myopia about MS but there is some very, very interesting stuff there.

You haven't truly risen to the top of the tech game until your face has appeared on a grilled cheese sandwich.
- Chris Baskind
A lot of the top tech writers got there because they have a lot to contribute. Scoble is one of them. So is Louis Grey and several others I could name. It's not all who you know.

I dunno... in the tech world developers create... writers write about and analyze... there's precious few with any technological savvy on these a-lists, unfortunately.

To celebrate America and its culture, I'm thinking of firing up the grill and for the very first time, make myself a Luther burger, also once referred to as "the greatest epicurean achievement in the history of man". http://flickr.com/photos... (Although the original way of doing is with the sticky glazed sides on the inside, makes it less messy)
- Vincent X
re: the Luther burger: am I dreaming or is there icing on the donut?
- Rubin Sfadj
@Vincent X I think I had a small heart attack just looking at that picture.
- David Z
is it wrong that my mouth actually WATERED when looking at those?!
- Veronica
No, it's not. Don't deny your feelings for this epitome of American cuisine.

i missed having my july 4th this year
- Danny Archer
My 1st Fouth off in 10 years! Retail FINALLY comes second! So far, only mowed my lawn - SOME CELEBRATION! LOL! HAPPY 4th Veronica!
- Jeff Garlick
Gah... I saw this Luther burger picture yesterday and was repulsed. Looking at it again, I still am grossed out... And I'm a huge fan of bacon cheeseburgers! And Krispy Kreme! But together... I don't think I can get on board with that. :P
- Cheryl Jones
By the way, for the record, I made myself a Luther burger. Quite good, though I do prefer regular burgers. The sugary smell when the doughnuts got on the grill was nice, and the flavor of the slightly caramelized sugar actually brought back a nice memory from childhood, when my dad would sometimes buy us a Liège-style Belgian waffle at the mall, which had this really delicious caramelized sugar coating. So yeah, in a nutshell, Luther burger = good. I'm glad I tried it.

this will be my first 4th of Juli in the US. I live in San Francisco and would hate to miss the fireworks because of the fog. It better clear up... but thats san francisco for you. Love the place anyway :)

Louis, then who is your (virtual) valtrex?
- Jeff Quinton
Nick Carr. He has a healthy distaste for Kool-Aid.
- Sprague D
At the risk of not seizing the opportunity for a bunch of cheap laughs, Louis, do you have any virtual role models (text changed to avoid confusion... ;-) )
- Mark Dykeman
Scoble. I used to not understand him. Now I've developed a much better appreciation for what he does. Heavy info consumption and distribution, more direct conversations with people than anyone I know, and a good sense about the value of things.
- Hutch Carpenter
@Julian - I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy from the publisher and I gotta say that it was a good read.
- Steven Hodson
personally I don't really like the term hero as it has connatations of putting people on a pedestal. Now if you were to ask who I respect (which btw I think is worth more than being a hero) that would be a different story
- Steven Hodson
@Steven - OK, then who do you respect in the blogosphere/social media space?
- Mark Dykeman
@Mark: Scoble, Carr, Duncan Riley, Alexander van Elsas, Mathew Ingram, chartreuse ... that will do for now but there are a bunch more that I also respect but these were the first that came to mind
- Steven Hodson
I'm going to point out the elephant in the middle of the room at this point: I don't see any women's names...
- Mark Dykeman
I'll fix that, Mark. Sarah Perez is my hero.
- Louis Gray
Great post mate. These days Cyndy and Leslie (Profy), Richard (RWW), Steve Hodson, Louis, Matt Ingram and people like you. I need fresh perspective and that's where it's coming from these days.
- Steve Spalding
Gary Vaynerchuk. If I could be half as successful as he's become and still have the enthusiasm, I'd be okay with that.
- Mark Trapp
All the developers of the cool products: Ben Golub, Alexander Marktl, Caleb Elston, the FriendFeed crew...
- Louis Gray
@Steven - checking out your post now...
- Mark Dykeman
....and ditto everyone that's already been listed above as well as everyone who's linked at the top of my blog.... This is a great list!
- Sarah Perez
Thanks Steven and Steve! I'd be sure to leave someone out, so I'm not making a list. :)
- Cyndy
@Sarah, yeah, pretty good list, but who's this Scoble guy they keep talking about? I hear that name every now and then... ;-) [please, please, please understand that I'm kidding....]
- Mark Dykeman
Clay Shirky, Fred Wilson, Michael Rosenblum, David Weinberger, and Denise Shiffman.
- Dave Martin
Leo Laporte, John C. Dvorak, Kevin Rose, Ray Kurzweil, Cory Doctorow. They've all, in my mind, achieved greatness in a narrow niche that they saw thru from concept to completion.
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
Leo Leporte, the mighty Scoble, and the scrappy Louis Gray, who I feel like I've watched become a Powerhouse through FriendFeed and is a genuinely good guy from everything that I can tell.
- Vince DeGeorge
@Robert - DE is a level up - the superhero
- Dave Martin
Robert Scoble, Louis Gray, Thomas Hawk, Hutch Carpenter, Steve Hodson, Corvida, Duncan Riley, Alexander van Elsas. Only been reading blogs for a few months... It's pretty overwhelming what you guys keep up with.
- Mitchell Tsai
If we need more proof that Friendfeed is a tech community (or Mark has only tech friends), look no further, if I'm not mistaking there isn't a single non-tech person on the hero list :-)
- Alexander van Elsas
So to counterweight that a bit, I vote for Nelson Mandela, who just turned 90, Johan Cruyff who was one of the most brilliant soccer players ever around, Jimi Hendrix cause Little Wing is the most brilliant guitar piece I ever heard, Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson for bringing us Filthy, Rich and Catflap, Bottom, and a whole lot of other great comedy shows. I could go on for a while ;-)
- Alexander van Elsas
@Alexander - good list, but the premise of the question was to ask specifically for virtual heroes/online models, which would naturally be weighted towards bloggers. :)
- Mark Dykeman
You provided me with a little slack to get away from the blogging scene when you said (virtual) ;-) I like many of the bloggers and tech people mentioned btw, Riberst Scoble went for the inventor of the mouse (I think?) , I took it a bit further away from the tech community ;-)
- Alexander van Elsas
Kos and Andrew Sullivan. I might not agree with the politics all the time, but they both were instrumental in the emergence of blogging as a job/ career, and in establishing blogging as a serious medium.
- Duncan Riley
If we're going to limit ourselves to bloggers, many of the ones I look up to are on this thread. I love hanging out here, and it's because of all of you.
- Robert Scoble
@Alexander, one of your many talents is to ignore restrictions when it makes sense to do so. :)
- Mark Dykeman
Robert Scoble -- workaholic. Jeremy Owyang --smart. But there are lots of gr8 ppl. Duncan Riley, Marshall Kirkpatrick. The list goes on. But at the top of the list for me it's Scoble and Jowyang
- john conroy

I'm really really close to selling my car and getting a Vespa instead. Smart car would work too, but I think they're backordered to no end, no?
- MG Siegler
Not really good choice. It was started by Swatch watches (s in smart), picked up by Mercedes, but it is saddled w/ extra stuff for CA emissions etc that make it heavy and less fuel efficient than designed. Interior is cheap. Storage is small. Driving is frenetic Hwy driving due to high sides and short drivetrain. Oh, and >1 year wait list too. Lots of VW diesels coming out soon...I know Diesel is high now but soon to go down. Or you can get a Prius or Honda Hybrid or Honda FCX (Hyrdrogen Fuel Cell-)!
- Pokai
Well, first - see if anybody from a Smart Car dealer finds you. :) Second, pitch them on driving 'er around SF and recording it for posterity.
- l0ckergn0me
I looked at a couple of different 'smart car' models, both were 2 seater and very small. Their gas mileage was not all that impressive, less that 40 mpg. The Honda Civic hybrid has by far the best mileage for any 'normal' form factor car. A friend of mine has one and gets 45MPG commuting from Santa Cruz to Cupertino every day. You can get a Civic Hybrid for ~$23K with a nice stereo. VW Diesels will get excellent mileage once they are available here in CA.
- Jeff P. Henderson
it's not about the gas mileage, but the parking! SMART
- morten saxnaes
Is 'Smart Car' an Oxymoron? Isn't a smarter choice walking, cycling or taking a public transport (depending on the distance)? Saves Money, Saves the Planet, Saves ones health.

- Jim Williams
Make sure that you're smarter than the car!
- Craig Thomler
Don't do it. Rented one several times (lin Germany) and the gearbox is just horrible. You find yourself hopping forward without any warning. Just get a small car with a very efficient gas mileage.
