the four cornerstones for development : 1. Individualization: coffee drinking was no longer a family moment, so people brew cups rather than pots of coffee 2. Personalization: people want control over the taste of their cup of coffee 3. Ease of use: making the coffee had to be easy and fast (within 30 seconds) 4. Appearance of espresso: people love the feeling of luxury of the foam on top of espresso

"Google has poured resources into improving its automatic translation service. Some of these systems are better than others at handling particular pairs of languages, and it is impossible to evaluate them fully using small bits of text. But here are some quick comparisons of human translations and computerized versions from Google and two competitors"

"If you see a few lines of atrocious code, you can make a judgement about the programmer. By judging the programmer, you can judge his boss, and by judging his boss you can judge the company. That’s the nature of fractals. The desire for quality trickles down to everything from making sure that the homepage photo isn’t blurry all the way through to making sure that font in Christmas card is correct. As Aristotle said, excellence is not an act but a habit."

"Like many, I am excited by advances made in Hindi filmmaking these days. It’s nice to see special effects that are *WOW* and cinematography that blows you away. I think experimentation is great. But I hope Hindi movies don’t lose what makes them uniquely “Indian”: the passion for life, the sheer exuberance, the songs and dancing. It’s magic."

Exposing all functionality on one screen can be useful in some cases, but once a certain level of complexity is reached, it’s no longer a reasonable idea. Bulk Rename Utility is well past that level of complexity. If your UI even vaguely resembles an airplane cockpit, you’re doing it wrong. Put another way, it’s a worthy goal to reduce the complexity of software to the point where it can be cleanly exposed on a single screen. That’s very different than cramming any arbitrary amount of complexity into a single screen. http://daringfireball.net/linked...

While many people tout the flexibility and customization options Android gives people, I can’t help but wonder if the singular model Apple employs makes managing a set of mobile applications easier. Every app is accessed the same way and only open apps are running. Sure this is limiting in some ways (customization options, background processes) but empowering in others (clarity, control) at the same time. If people feel more confident with Apple's simpler customization options, they may actually customize more (add additional apps) as a result.

Earthquakes, architecture of FLW and web design : In 1923, Frank Lloyd Wright completed the Imperial Hotel, a building commissioned in Japan. In 1923, there was a 8.3 magnitude earthquake. The hotel survived. - http://www.eleganthack.com/...
"Wright had no experience with Earthquakes. When he arrived in Japan, that lack of familiarity was his strength; he passionately researched earthquake damage, and designed his hotel with multiple safeguards."

* Experience Quantification: Use the Experience Quantification technique to increase the attractiveness of a task by either downgrading the associated Pain or boosting the associated Payoff. * Set aside some time: Use time boxes, schedule them in your calendar and when the time comes stick to the plan. * Develop some positive patterns and habits: Get into the habit of doing things and working around good patterns. You’re more likely to keep at things when they become second nature. * Look at alternate ways of doing things: Don’t just assume every problem is a nail if you have a hammer. Try to look for alternative approaches which may simplify things. * Pace yourself: Don’t go our strong only to burn out before you get to the finish line. Pace yourself. Break the problem down into smaller chunks and tackle each in turn. You may also apply other great problem solving nuggets. * Stay motivated: Big and important tasks often require hard work and dedication. Often it’s not a sprint but...

"We have assembled a heavenly design team. By keeping the core team small and investing significantly in tools and process we can work with a level of collaboration that seems particularly rare. Our physical environment reflects and enables that collaborative approach. The large open studio and massive sound system support a number of communal design areas. We have little exclusively personal space. In fact, the memory of how we work will endure beyond the products of our work."

I’ve spent years trying a variety of tools, and so far, analog tools such as markers, notebooks and paper templates have proved to be the most effective because of their constraints and flexibility........Take this as a no-nonsense, hands-on reference for sketching user Experiences

"Wells Fargo hired Pentagram in the fall of 2005 to begin work on a new user interface for their ATMs. Wells Fargo was in the process of replacing their ATMs with newer models with touchscreen monitors. This was a relatively slow process, since there are about 7,000 ATMs in the field, and replacements are expensive. The design efforts were to improve the user experience and satisfaction. Wells Fargo sought a more graceful presentation flow rather than a choppy screen-to-screen feel, and an overall more elegant appearance for the UI."

"According to folklore, in the early development of the Apple Macintosh, resident graphics genius Bill Atkinson performed a miracle. He found a way to overcome the Mac’s 6800 chip’s math limitations thus enabling the OS to draw circles and ellipses (not just rectangles) on the screen at a blistering speed. He proudly showed this new ability off to the team. But this was not enough for the leader of the Mac team, Steve Jobs. No, the father of the Macintosh asked for one more thing."
