Exactly! It's cool, because the drawing can also tell me things about the character that I didn't know otherwise.
- Christine Taylor
That's a great idea—to try drawing your character before writing about them. You also have the beginnings of an illustration.:-) It also helps to use other senses, like what sounds does your character make or like/dislike, sense of smell and touch, etc.
- Cathryn Hrudicka
Sounds--what a good idea! Arg, my writing group dings me on "5 senses" all the time. :-) I think *because* I'm a visual artist, too, I tend to go heavy on "sight." I really have to push myself to get scents, sounds, tastes, textures into my writing. I *do* know he likes the smell of fish & machine oil--he's from the coast, & that came into play in a recent story. :-)

It's probably in part because I am a "sound" person. I find it fun just to write the backstory on each character (not gazillions of pages, just a page or two is good), and include all the senses, things that the character loves/is passionate about, what makes the character mad, etc. What makes each one tick. Then it leads me more accurately to where I want to go.
- Cathryn Hrudicka
Very cool. I could tell you down to a freckle what a character looks like; but I'm getting better at building backstory. It's a ton of fun!

From the page: "A character, just like a story line, also needs what one professor of mine called torque. By torque he meant a kind of twist or quick change in the energy, direction, or expectations of the story. The best stories show you a vivid portrait of a world, a character, or an event, but near the end they abruptly give you new and startling insight into the way things really are. "

It's one of my life's goals to write fiction that inspires a healthy self-image in young girls. This article details the unhealthy images and practices our girls are "faced" with these days: From the page: "This, my friends, is the new normal: a generation that primps and dyes and pulls and shapes, younger and with more vigor. Girls today are salon vets before they enter elementary school."

I'm still numb from the experience and deeply touched and inspired. It's a beautiful song first and foremost but the message is so important. Especially considering the current economy as so many of us struggle to make ends meet and survive."

How about when things are going well, do you have someone to remind you where it all comes from? Do you have anyone to call you out of the blue and ask you the tough questions that get you thinking about God again and less about yourself and whatever situation you find yourself in?"

But one carrier is advocating a return to civility...At the same time, rudeness has been on the rise in every corner of society. As standards of dress and politeness have relaxed, so has a basic understanding of proper decorum in public spaces. Add to that all kinds of service-industry workers with entitlement issues as great as those of customers, and you've got trouble." Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me! :-)

From the page: "When Columbus was asked to describe Madeira, he tore a page from his journal, crunched it up and flicked it onto the table. It was the perfect depiction of an island where tall peaks crumple into deep crevices and where tiny towns and villages full of whitewashed houses bask in the sun in deep verdant valleys and provide gentle contrast to the dramatically sheer coastal cliffs that plunge spectacularly into a sea of deep blue silk."
