Screen Gems falls for 'Sheneneh'
Screen Gems falls for 'Sheneneh'
"Screen Gems has acquired "Sheneneh and Wanda," a vehicle for Jamie Foxx and Martin Lawrence to star in a comic caper playing female characters they developed during their stand-up comedy days. Foxx will write the script, which he and Martin will produce through Foxx's Foxxhole and Lawrence's Runteldat production banners. The project originated as a parody of a movie trailer for a film called "Skank Robbers," which Foxx and Lawrence made for the BET Awards. The reaction was strong enough that the duo decided to turn the concept into a real film. In the comedy, Sheneneh and Wanda are modern-day independent women trying to make it on their own, one bank robbery at a time" - Derrick from Bookmarklet

Up Director Pete Docter on His Next Project and Why Pixar Movies End With Chase Scenes
"This spring, Wall Street was fretting over the uncertain commercial prospects of Pete Docter's Up. But six months and $646 million after its release, it's Pixar's second-highest-grossing film ever and, thanks to the Academy's expansion of the Best Picture category, it stands a good chance of being the studio's first movie to compete for Oscar's top award. Given Up's release on Blu-Ray and DVD tomorrow, we spoke to Docter by phone about the movie's first four minutes, its awards chances, and what little he could tell us about his next project (which isn't Monsters, Inc. 2!)." - Derrick from Bookmarklet

Did Avatar Really Cost $500 Million? - http://io9.com/5400109...
Did Avatar Really Cost $500 Million?
"The New York Times hypothesizes that James Cameron's Avatar will cost half a billion dollars in the end. But Fox has a plan, in case the movie doesn't make Titanic numbers. Plus, find out what Rupert Murdoch thinks of Avatar. James Cameron and his crew have repeatedly said that the budget for Avatar was $230 million, but the NYT guesstimates that after tallying up the marketing campaign and Cameron's own personal contributions, the movie's cost will be around $500 million." - Derrick from Bookmarklet
That would make this the most expensive movie of all time — so much so that Rupert Murdoch, the News Corporation's chairman, was drawn to comment on the film (which he's watched, and was "excited and moved" by.) Murdoch expressed faith that the movie will be a success over the Chirstmas season. They'd better hope so. Of course, the Times article may be vastly exaggerating the marketing... more... - Derrick
I have seen the extended trailers and it looks cool and all, but wow, 500 million...wow. - Satan thinks ur awesome
I know the movie's been in development forever, and Cameron was waiting for technology to catch up with the vision of the movie in his head. When I saw the first trailer, I was like...that's it? The more recent trailer and commercials look better, but I still can't get past the powder blue Gelflings from The Dark Crystal. - Derrick
I like movies, I really do. I'm a particular sucker for SciFi special effects extravaganzas. But $500M? I can't help but think of other things one could do with that kind of money. Build a solar power plant, or feed a lot of hungry people, or fill thousands of Kiva loans, or ... etc - Jason Wehmhoener
there is only one avatar flick that I want to see and it is not this one. ive seen several trailers for this movie and each is worse than the last. this does not look, nor feel, good. further, the entire movie is given away in these trailers...not that it was all that compelling anyway. easy pass for me. - Carlos Ayala

For ‘Avatar,’ a Huge Budget Supported by Many Players - NYTimes.com - http://www.nytimes.com/2009...

"Can a movie studio make money on a film based on an original and unfamiliar story, with no Hollywood superstars, a vanishing DVD market and a price tag approaching $500 million? That question looms large for 20th Century Fox and its 3-D science-fiction film “Avatar,” among the most expensive movies ever. Despite many skeptics, the studio thinks it can turn a profit, in part because the film’s creator, James Cameron, was the driving force behind the studio’s immense hit “Titanic.” But just in case box-office receipts for “Avatar” fall short, Fox has worked hard to hedge its large bet on the movie. Despite the estimated half-billion dollars spent on its production and marketing, “Avatar” may carry surprisingly little financial risk for Fox’s parent company, the News Corporation, even if it disappoints. That is because of shifting industry economics, reliance on outside investors and help from a network of allied companies and in-house business units." - RAPatton
"At what point the various partners in “Avatar” would see profit from the film depends on what share of revenue each receives as the movie reaches theaters, then home video and other media around the world. If domestic ticket sales reach $250 million — a level broken in the last year by five films, including “Star Trek” and “The Hangover” — Fox and its allies would appear to be headed... more... - RAPatton
"Privately, theater owners are now predicting that “Avatar” may play in as many as 2,500 3-D theaters, while occupying almost as many conventional theaters over the holiday season, heightening the likelihood of a big opening. Theaters using 3-D bolster the overall box-office by commanding ticket prices perhaps 30 percent higher than those of conventional theaters. Still, the studio has... more... - RAPatton

Indie Trailer Sunday: Michael Winterbottom's The Killer Inside Me
"This trailer has been out for a few days now, but I thought it was the perfect trailer to feature today, not only because no one is at work on a Sunday, but because it's a great indie trailer. The Killer Inside Me is the latest film from British filmmaker Michael Winterbottom about a West Texas deputy sheriff who is slowly unmasked as a psychotic killer. Casey Affleck stars as the sheriff and is joined by Jessica Alba, Kate Hudson, Simon Baker, Elias Koteas, and Bill Pullman. I also need to warn everyone that this is a full-on 5 minute promo trailer which means it contains nudity, violence, sex, you name it. So don't watch it with the kids!" - Derrick from Bookmarklet
Sheriff Lou Ford (Casey Affleck) has a lot of problems. Woman problems. Law enforcement problems. An ever-growing pile of murder victims in his West Texas jurisdiction. EXCLUSIVE: David Goyer Says ‘Ghost Rider 2′ Isn’t A Reboot, Takes Place Eight Years Later
"Not long ago, it was announced that "Batman Begins" and "Super Max" screenwriter David Goyer would be navigating the demonic motorcycle for "Ghost Rider 2," based on a screenplay Goyer wrote several years ago. Many have wondered whether the screenplay—which is toning down its hard-R nature for a PG-13 rating—would reboot the "Ghost Rider" franchise. MTV News put that very question to Goyer, who said that while the continuity won't necessarily get an overhaul, the tone is certainly shifting. "It's not exactly a reboot," said Goyer, who's currently hard at work on his "FlashForward" television series. "I hate to say it's more realistic, because he's got a flaming skull for a head, but it's a bit more stripped down and darker. It's definitely changing tone. What 'Casino Royale' was to the Bond movies, hopefully this will be to 'Ghost Rider.'" The "Ghost Rider" sequel is planned to "roll before cameras next year," according to Goyer, who also said that Nicolas Cage is currently still attached to the lead role of Johnny Blaze." - RAPatton from Bookmarklet
""This story picks up eight years after the first film," said Goyer. "You don't have to have seen the first film. It doesn't contradict anything that happened in the first film, but we're pretending that our audience hasn't seen the first film. "So the movie itself. I'm a huge fan of the Mark Millar/John Romita jr comic anyway, so to see the film so early felt like a massive coup, and I'm happy to tell you that this is the Kick-Ass film that Kick-Ass fans will want to see. It opens like the first comic virtually verbatim (I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't read them), but the film itself varies only slightly from the source comic, but the changes made by director Matthew Vaughan and screenwriter Jane Goldman ring true to the spirit of the comic, and never feel strange, in fact the changes made make the film seem logical and help some bring some of the wilder concepts down to earth. The comic sets out as a modern deconstruction of the superhero concept, with knowing nods to geekdom surrounding comics, and the film takes that idea and runs with. Littered with references to other superhero films from Batman, Superman and Spiderman (even the Spirit movie gets a hilarious nod), this feels like it is happening in our world,... more... - RAPatton

Kick-Ass: The Movie Review by Wade Campbell | Bleeding Cool Comic News & Rumors

"I won’t spoil the ending of the movie as it is one of the greatest and most ridiculous sequences concocted for the big screen within the last ten years. As it is a movie and needs to appeal to a wider audience there is more comedy and romance but it fits in beautifully. It is almost Superbad in places but without the gross out bits. The action sequences feel right. It was a little unnerving at first to see an 11 year old girl create so much carnage, but it is down right OTT enough not to have the censors screaming. The common sense of absurdity prevails and a lot of people die in this movie, but this isn’t like watching Black Hawk Down. You can watch Kick Ass more than once. The audience was completely into the movie. There was a lot of clapping and cheering. I took a non-comic book friend from work and he can’t wait to take his wife to see it once it comes in April. People will go see it two or three times when it comes out! Kudos to Vaughn and Millar. One of the most fun and entertaining movies I have ever seen. More importantly than that – it is a victory for the geeks! I can’t wait for a sequel!" - RAPatton from Bookmarklet

Review: `Precious' is great American cinema
"As Hollywood closed specialty divisions that aimed for quality and personal stories, as studios focus more and more on superhero sagas and action blockbusters, cinema fans have rightly wondered, who's left to make great American movies? For one, the makers of "Precious: Based on the Novel `Push' by Sapphire," who assembled some of the unlikeliest ingredients — Mariah Carey, Mo'Nique, and a lead actress plucked from an anonymous casting call — to create a wondrous work of art. The film isn't easy to watch and will test your tolerance for despicable behavior as a long history of physical abuse and incest unfolds involving an illiterate, obese Harlem schoolgirl. Yet "Precious" — both the film and its grandly resilient title character — will steal your heart. Lee Daniels, in just his second film as director, crafts a story that rises from the depths of despair to a place of genuine hope." - Derrick from Bookmarklet

Well, that's all a secret for now, but I learned a lot from Kick-Ass and love having the same creative freedom I have with comics when I work in cinema. I never want to be a studio bitch and go in there pitching for them to love me. The closest I came to this was a couple of calls regarding Superman, but pretty much none of my plans ever revealed as I didn't like the idea of anyone nicking them. Similarly, I don't like the idea of asking for funding and justifying scenes with the money-men so I'm doing what Matthew Vaughn did with Kick-Ass and just making it outside the system with private investors. Don Cheadle Offers ‘Iron Man 2′ War Machine Update
"A first look at Cheadle as War Machine debuted during this year's Comic-Con in San Diego, with the reaction from fans widely positive. According to the actor, playing War Machine was certainly different than anything he's done in the past, but only in the best of ways—particularly because, by the sound of it, Cheadle's character will spend as much time in a suit-and-tie as he will in War Machine mode. "I think the character that I play, my CGI character worked as much as I worked," he said. "The stuntman worked as much as I worked. It's a huge undertaking. It was great. It was a really different experience than I have worked on before." While he said the job is further "down the road," Cheadle also confirmed that he'd have a starring role in "The Avengers," the superhero team-up flick that unites Iron Man with Captain America and Thor." - RAPatton from Bookmarklet
