BYZANTIUM is a vampire movie starring Gemma Arterton (PRINCE OF PERSIA) and Saoirse Ronan (HANNA), based on the play of the same name and directed by Neil Jordan (INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE). In other words, these are a few of my favorite things and they're all together in the same movie. And, you know, the only other time I can remember being more excited for a vampire story was with LET THE RIGHT... Read More...

Berlin Film Festival Review: James Marsh’s ‘Shadow Dancer’ Is a Thriller That’s Calm Like a Bomb - http://www.wopular.com/berlin-...
The image of the bomb is an apt one for Shadow Dancer. As a hunk of parts with a timer, there’s nothing naturally threatening about a bomb; it’s the explosion that matters. While not all of the featured films paint a negative picture of love and relationships, they all must contend with some difficulties, if not outright tragedies, along the way. Hapless romantic Brian Herzlinger decides to follow through on his nearly lifelong crush on Drew Barrymore by tracking down the Hollywood star and getting her to agree to go out on a date. read more

(Despite what Italian horrorfilms might say, it sometimes does pay to look in a basement...) Every year at the International Film Festival Rotterdam a fun time can be had when the audience ratings are popping up for the first time, always a few days into the festival already. The usual suspects may be on top of that list but you can rest assured at least half of the upper ten consists of titles you've never ever heard of. Happy surprises, or world premieres by yet unknown people. Often these will be documentaries impossible to catch outside of a festival. read more

BenDavid Grabinski's short film Cost Of Living was a great favorite at the 2011 Fantastic Fest, the slyly comic horror comedy tapping into a classic John Carpenter vibe with former Superman Brandon Routh playing Kurt Russell to Grabinski's Carpenter. It's great fun and you no longer have to take our word for it because the producers have just released the full short online. Yes, on Valentine's Day. Because they love you. read more
