Search and Social: Will the Twitter Firehose Become a Sewage-Filled Spam Hose? | SearchViews - Daily insights on Search Marketing, Social Media and SEO by Reprise Media. - http://www.searchviews.com/index...
From the page: "Let's hope that Twitter, Bing, and Google are able to minimize the amount of spam showing up in the SERPs while still providing the benefits that real time search results can bring."

In the new world of social media, Google and other search engines are bringing up Twitter in results more prominently with each revision of their algorithms. A negative blog post like this one, on a site with a powerful presence like the Huffington Post can also rank well and lead to other blogs and posts linking in and out, spreading the story virally.

"NY Post and Daily News hand out papers for free at subway stations but it is a similar idea. IMO it's a way to artificially boost circulation and increase advertising rates. Obviously it's not working anymore."

"You might want to look at what's going on with the tax free cigarettes on NY State Indian reservations. Cigarettes are still legal in NY but there is a huge market for tax free cigs due to the exorbitant taxes. Quite a few former drug dealers are now in the cigarette smuggling business and there have been more than a few suspicious deaths and related violence. Imagine what's going to happen when they are banned entirely."

Local direct mailers are expensive and provide very little ROI for most businesses. Local search is a much better investment and attracts customers who are actually looking for your products or services.

"Not entirely impressed with the accuracy on some of the search results at Bing but it is not that much worse than Google. I do like some of the features like video and fare cast for travel searches."

"Why would they do that? it would make no sense at all for them. They keep all of the revenue for their own TV contract and any bowl appearances instead of being forced to share it with the other teams in a conference. Until they lose the exclusive TV contract with NBC and stop getting bowl bids there is no way they will join a conference."

"WTF? Just because your ramblings made no sense doesn't mean that you used any "technology terms". In fact I don't see a single "technology term" in your inane spewage."

"It's still not meant to be icy. It should be cool but nor ice cold. You are missing out on a lot of flavor and goodness if you are drinking IPAs that are ice cold."

That was what I thought, too, Mike.

I dunno. He's making a very good point. Although you may get more pageviews if something you write is submitted to digg, those pageviews or of lesser value. Digg users are idiots for the most part. They'll leave rude and inane comments or flame you if they disagree. There's no meaning behind a Digg user. An individual? That's much different. Even when they disagree with you, they've *usually* thought it through. (ish)

That's a very good point, Mattie. I have generally found the social media traffic from twitter/FF/etc much better than that from Stumble or Digg, simply because it is already targeted. Generally people who follow me on those services are already interested in what I am interested in writing about. When my referrer is twitter or FF I see a good rise in subscriptions, but not so much from Digg or Mixx.

Mattie, that may be true BUT some of those visitors may actually enjoy your blog and keep coming back. Social news sites offer an excellent opportunity to increase readership and improve your reach online. Sure you may deal with some knuckleheads but the good outweighs the bad in the end.

From the page: "Do you remember 2001? What were doing? The same job? maybe in school? Married? Single? Well it is only 7 years ago but Google has decided to take us for search stroll back in time with Google 2001 for their 10th anniversary"

SEO is dead, ranking is useless and other fairy tales. Well peeps, it seems it's that time again and peeps are shovelling crap once more. Not that it's anything new, but worth me taking time away from my sabbatical to rant off a bit.
