Even Marc Spitz admits, in the opening pages of his new book, Bowie: A Biography, that he wasn’t sure the world needed another treatise on the life, loves and music of David Bowie. After all, as a writer for Spin, the New York Times, Maxim, Nylon, and Blender, as well as a long time fan of [...]

A dozen players from the Shorecrest Preparatory School's Gold Girls Soccer team (plus one of the girl's friends and two parents) gave up their Saturday afternoon on December 5, 2009, to welcome clients to the non-profit Christmas Toy Shop (550 16th Street North, St. Petersburg, Fl, 33705 (727) 898-3962 ToyShopElf@Juno.com) and help them select toys for their children. It was a great experience for all to get in the holiday spirit! (Thanks to Bailee's mom, Nikki, for the great photos!)

There is something about professional wrestling that you just can’t look away from on television. The costumes, the oversize personalities, the inflated drama and comedy—it all plays even bigger on the tube. I remember watching Haystacks Calhoun and friends on crummy UHF channels growing up in New Jersey. It was like watching live television broadcasts from [...]

Image via Wikipedia Picture this: I’m looking up to my left in a thoughtful pose, my right index finger gently tapping against my lower lip. Outwardly, I’m introducing my guests, “Scrubs” TV stars Donald Faison—a.k.a., Turk—and Dave Franco. Inwardly, I’m daydreaming, trying to imagine what their co-star, Zach Braff would be thinking about if he were me. How [...]

Photo by Bob Clingman, Shorecrest In some ways, the MD Girls Gold team's second soccer game of the season was the inverse of its first. During game one, the goalie Dulci B. never touched the ball; in game two, Keswick's keeper never touched the ball as Gold had no shots on goal. The good news is that Gold kept the game close--down just 1-0 at the half. But the Keswick defense frustrated Shorecrest throughout the entire contest. Meanwhile, at our end of the field, Dulci B. finally got her hands on the ball, stopping 11 of 12 shots in the first half and 20 of 21 in the second half--31 of 33 in all. It was an outstanding performance by the rookie. It could have been much worse, but for the speed of sweeper Ana Gabriela R. and stopper Katerina A.--they were everywhere at once, or so it seemed--as well as some booming kicks by Nadine S. and the tenacity of Katie J., who ran circles around a forward twice her size. Gold's record is now 2-1. Next game: Monday, December 7 @ Sarasota...

Congratulations to Nadine and Cennedi, who were invited to play in the Green team's Nov. 17 home game against St. Stephen's. The girls represented us well, contributing to a 5-0 rout of one of Shorecrest's traditional rivals.

Parents and Players, Don't forget, we have a HOME game on Monday, Nov. 23 @ 4 p.m. Girls should be on the field no later than 3:30 p.m. (Georgia and Amanda, please come earlier so I can get you uniforms!) I expect to see our full team together for the first time on Monday as no one has indicated they won't be there, so this should be fun! Hope we'll see a lot of parents and friends cheering on the girls, too! A few other notes: • TEAM PARENTS: Nadine's mom and Cennedi's mom have kindly volunteered to be team parents. When they ask you to help with a concession stand shift or shift selling tickets at our games, etc., please do so. Thanks to them and thanks to all of you! • TEAM PHOTOS: Please mark Thursday, Dec. 3, 3:15 p.m., on your calendars as a day the girls cannot miss: It's Photo Day! A photographer will meet us on the field for team and individual pictures! The team photo is used in the yearbook and you'll have an opportunity to purchase individual photos later. No obligation. •...

He met Irving Brecher, a brilliant and funny writer from the Golden Age of Hollywood comedy, and spent hours recording stories from Irv about everyone from Groucho Marx and the Marx Brothers to Judy Garland and Jackie Gleason.
