I haven't used HelloTxt, but from first impressions of the webpage it doesn't look quite as nuanced as ping.fm - seems more about status updates only. Ping.fm allows blog and microblog posting as well and I like the flexibility. Having said that, there's nothing wrong with doing one thing well.
- David Young
Sounds pretty even right now. Someone should post a feature comparison grid!
- Glenn Batuyong
Hello.txt with SMS gateway; while Ping.fm with IM support. Hello.txt is two way (at least on the web interface); while Ping.fm could only send messages, not receiving.
- Jansen Lu
I'm trying to get SMS working at hellotxt, but it rejects saying that I'm not sending to a "vaild 10 digit code" - ideas anyone?
- Steve Isaacs
Thanks for the updates, everyone. Does either service work well with Blackberry?
- Ryne Nelson
would anyone use Hellotxt as a two-way communication tool? or just treating it as a message broadcaster?
- Jansen Lu
HelloTxt: nicer interface and more services supported, though I tend to use both 'cos I'm a nerd ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol my Ping.fm's interface is very clean and neat, 'coz it's only the gtalk conversation windows :P
- Jansen Lu
I'm leaning toward TelloText though I haven't really given Ping.fm a fair shot.
- Kimberly J
I use Ping.fm and I like it better because they keep adding great new innovative features. And you can use it with many different applications like Twirl, Spaz, etc.
- Guitarguy234
Ok, so what is the term for FriendFeed Post Necromancy? Because this is the poster child for it.
- Justin Whitaker
Ok..i love pingfm..and now im using posterous.
- Dan Kern
What's wrong about "products launch"? I constantly make new stuff. I can't stop. I like it.
- directeur
How about a product lunch? Is that acceptable?
- Ontario Emperor
Josh, ah I see... I'm not one of those anyway... I believe that a good product sells by itself. in the Internet era, marketing is just accelerating the inevitable process.
- directeur
You can say that again, Josh! This weekend took it to a whole new level.
- Graham English
I don't mind subbing to a marketer as long as they're doing MORE than marketing and have something interesting to say
- Kimberly J
There are huge changes in store for American Idol this year. Thank goodness because I stopped watching two seasons ago. Talent just wasn't good enough.
I honestly don't know. I think AI knew they were losing viewers and are now trying to make changes as quickly as possible or else they won't be around much longer. We'll just have to wait and see, but I'm excited to see what they have in store.
- Jennifer James
As it is online, so it is in the real world. I personally fall into each category depending on the context.

I read a blog that I don't agree with at ALL. Because the blogger insistently wears blinders and somehow was given a big stick to carry, I don't post often. However, this blogger has quite a vocal participant base. I know the blog is somehow "popular," but I can't imagine that the formula would work accurately for that particular blog.
- Kimberly J
"I can't quite digg it, but it's a pretty entertaining read. "The fact of the matter is once a female decides it's over with another female, it's like an end-stage marriage. No matter how seemingly benign, every attribute becomes an affront: the hair, the voice, the husband, the moose-shooting, the glasses, the big family, the making rape victims pay for their own rape test kits.""

Ustream. IRC is a perfect compliment for the video. One of my main reasons for using. Also the recording capability is a must have
- Bwana ☠
@Kim Bwana runs his own show for a while now whatever he says is pretty solid.
- Roger Kondrat
Stickam, BlogTV, and Mogulus are certainly worth considering.

Shawn, almost everybody is there right now. Now, I go over the ground like a magnet getting black sand and pull you up. :-)
- Louis Gray
About half way through the new FF curve (Decided the do the revisit Facebook thing today instead) but definitely a dramatic improvement now that there's lots more people here. Wait, does that say Techie??
- Charlie Anzman
I suppose this is inevitable and an almost must-do for folks with too many follows. Even though I only subscribe to about 90+ folks here, I can feel the noise creeping in at times too, and have wondered if I should use the lists more proactively. But like cleaning up an inbox, it would take time to do it.. Well, at least I have one list right now - a list of all my colleagues. And, I think you have a good process there in sorting your follows.
- Winston Teo
Avdi, the idea is as it says, to take the high traffic out and better reveal those who need more attention. Anybody here will say I treat A-List and Z-List the same...
- Louis Gray
I'm updating my lists as a I go along. I'm basically on the main feed, and my lists Awesome Pix and Enterprise 2.0 a lot. Will continue to refine these over time.
- Hutch Carpenter
Slippy, you need to recruit your real-world friends into FriendFeed.
- Ernie Oporto
i love the lists, give me access to much more info quicker
- MG Siegler
Louis, excellent post as I happily find each time I read your blog! :) This list concept is really a great feature of FF and I am glad you're liking it. I need to fine tune mine some more... but it really does help deliver the best content to me and I am incredibly grateful for the filtering this provides...very neat! Thanks!
- Susan Beebe
"At work and at home, I file all my e-mail. For example, I have top level folders for "Personal", "Family", "Commerce", and "Blog", and thinking of people on FriendFeed the same way isn't that much of a stretch." I never thought about it quite that way before. Nice post. Thanks
- Roberto Bonini
I am thrilled that FF offered the list functionality, but as a result, I've found myself looking at my "favorites" list 95% of the time and the other lists 5% of the time, so it's almost the equivalent to unsubscribing from most of my list. Then again, maybe that's not a bad thing. It avoids hurt feelings, it gives me an out, and I feel less drowned.
- Adam Lasnik
I'm sure it's a necessity for ppl with a huge # of subs; I'd rather not think about it cuz I know I'm "back page" material. Ah well. ;\
- Kimberly J
Kim, the "Back Page" is just a good way to sort. If I put you next to Scoble, maybe I miss it.
- Louis Gray
I still have yet to organize my lists..
- Kyle Lacy
I usually create too many lists and categories and after awhile find I only look at a few so i consolidate. still trying to find the balance.

"Real-world behaviours and racial biases could carry forward into virtual worlds such as Second Life, social psychologists say. According to a study that was conducted in There.com, virtual world avatars respond to social cues in the same ways that people do in the real world."
- Maki

Very interesting especially considering the amount of time SLers and others tend to spend on line. It doesn't surprise me that there is racial bias in virtual worlds, but I wonder how exactly replicated the manifestations are. Heh, maybe I should read the article. Yeah, in my free time . . .

I cheated by using iTunes, and looking at my top 1000 played, sorted by album, and then looked at my decades' sets. I'm sure that overlooks work by Nirvana, NIN, etc, that aren't ripped in there.

It's so hard to pick just ten. And albums... there are so many good songs, but whole albums? My list changes over time, but here are ten *among* my favorites... - Tinfoil 2.0
Louis, I'm usually data-driven, but music is different... To get my initial list I scanned my library and ratcheted up my emotion detector. But I just applied your algorithm and it did tweak the list somewhat.
- Tinfoil 2.0

"Why is CYTOTEC not on this list? It is an ulcer medication that is contraindicated for pregnancy YET is given to women to induce labor. I'd like to try that GTD system that I keep hearing about. As an iPhone and mac user, what do you think are the best tools/applications/webApps I can use to Get Things Done ?
+1 on the book. OmniFocus (OF) is the best I've used and they also have an iPhone version. iGTD is a free, but annoying. OF is well worth it. Vitalist is a great online GTD alternative (I used it before OF was released) with iPhone support. IMHO, It is better than the popular RememberTheMilk (aka RTM).
- Zviki Cohen
If you decide to use Remember the Milk, ToDo by Appigo on the iPhone is a great app and worth the money. I use it constantly.
- Angel Smith
You should try a set of videos on GTD from the online soft i use, Nozbe. They are short and to the point, and the software itself should give you an idea of the mechanics of the system.
- robertocastro
I am testing Things for both Mac and iPhone now. So far so good.
- Leon Ho
Like Leon, I'm currently using Things on Mac and iPhone. Excellent apps, excellent syncing between the two.
- Joel Falconer
things for me - great team, great development over time. looking forward to buy it.
- Christoph Bauer
What makes OF different is the amazingly-flexible outline capability. It is so easy to take a task and break it into sub tasks and than smaller sub-tasks, etc. until you're left with short term, simple, achievable tasks. Most other tasks managers provide fixed number of levels (2-3).
- Zviki Cohen
Am I the only one that thinks this whole concept of Artificial Attention does not apply to FriendFeed? This is not a social networking site, this is a site based on the flow of information. You don't "friend" someone, you subscribe. You don't have a "buddy list" or "top friends". FriendFeed should not have this feature. It makes no sense here.
- Rahsheen?
"You don't have a "buddy list" or "top friends" @Rahsheen, I do now :)
- Tim Hoeck
The larger the audience, the more dialog (Not to mention the fact that this IS one of the features that made Twitter so attractive to begin with). Fly on the Wall, Please, fell free!
- Charlie Anzman
My issue is, with principle. It's so bizarre to me, that FriendFeed would back and endorse the 'internet popularity' garbage. I've read the TechCrunch article and my stance stays the same. Better content management? Preserving feelings? Please. That's what 'grouping' and 'hide' functions are for :)
- Mona Nomura
...and I only speak out on things I feel strongly about. I've never been vocal about any FriendFeed 'memes' (ie: I'm un-subscribing from you, it's too noisy, how do I manage my FriendFeed, etc) Complaining for the sake of complaining, is NOT something I do :)
- Mona Nomura
Actually, I'm fake following myself as an imaginary friend right now.
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
thumbs down to fake following; I've never been a fan of fake anything
- Kimberly J
Fake following screws up all the neat FF stats we used to share. I know I'm not the only one that liked all the stats and graphs and crap. Bleh...this topic sucks now. Pretend you didn't read this.
- Rahsheen?
I don't like the fake following feature either. I am on FriendFeed to follow what other people have to share; what it's really appreciated here in Italy is the chance of seeing even friends of friends' feeds. That's absolutely great. One gets to know new users, new ideas, new point of views and definitely you never know where something interesting can come from. It's all about serendipity. The background noise can be easily reduced with the hide command, that works just fine.
- Niki Costantini
I wonder how many of the thousands of follows / followers of the "A listers" are fake.
- Mike Henderson
