Trish the back story is 3 or 4 FF threads ans countless tweets... But, in Jerry's defense, I think I've made more arrogant statements than that ;)
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I know the back story but that doesn't change my opinion.
- Trish R
From what I understand the only issue so far is the black spots next to blown out highlights. From the examples I've seen it is not obvious unless you zoom in 100% or beyond, which in not normally how most people view photos. I have to assume that this can be fixed via a firmware upgrade. Canon is aware of the issue and will hopefully resolve it soon.
- Jeff P. Henderson
I've been checking the Best Buy website the past couple days. Today one showed up at a store near me. Bought it online, picked it up at the store. Now for the learning curve...
- John Wright
@John, I'd love to hear what you think. Do you already own a DSLR or is this your first?
- Jeff P. Henderson
Hey Jeff, been away and didn't see this. I guess you have yours in hand now too? I'm impressed so far, though I've fired fewer than 50 frames. I'm spending time in the manual and menus learning the new functions. I'll be shooting more now that Adobe has release LR 2.2 which supports the new RAW format. I have shot a few frames at iso 3200 and am really happy with the results. Much better than the 5D (which I've been shooting with).
- John Wright
Thought I would offer this up to the FriendFeed crowds... I need three things... a good air purifier, a good humidifier, and a Roomba. Any recommendations? :)
I second the request for a recommendation on a good humidifier. :)
- Dan Hsiao
Honeywell whole house humidifier - attaches to your forced-air furnace and delivers moisture throughout the whole house! awesome... I wish we had these on the West Coast when I lived in CA.
- Susan Beebe
We have a dinky little Vicks humidifier. It's great for just keeping 1 room comfortable during the dry winter months. And it was really cheap (like $20 from Target).
- Benjamin Golub
iRobot should make a Scooba with a HEPA air filter. It could solve all three of your needs in one!
- Kevin Fox
@John, can it do rugs and carpets without eating the edges?
- Mike Chelen
I've had 2 different generations of Roomba and I'm not terribly impressed with the long term reliability of them. They'll have to make significant changes to them before I consider purchasing another one.
- Lee Wilson
I won't condone the Roomba, as it's a sucky product. Hey, want ours? I have a Honeywell portable air purifier that works well for one small room, but if you want whole house I suggest stepping up to Susan's suggestion.
- Admiral Anika
Our Roomba can't handle our rug because it has a black border. Its infrared 'cliff sensors' perceive the black stripe as an abyss and it refuses to go on the rug (or get off it if it starts on it). Ugh.
- Kevin Fox
We bought a Roomba to help with the pet hair (2 cats, 1 dog) on our hardwood with rugs. Didn't work well at all and died completely after a couple months. Every time it went from one surface to another (hardwood to rug or back) it would leave a pile of animal hair at the border. And the little collection chamber would fill so quickly. Maybe if you had a really clean house with no dirt on the floor it would do well. I'll wait until the technology improves and try again.
- John Wright
We registered for a Roomba for xmas.
- Nation Hahn
Get a Dyson "Animal" vacuum - best on the planet!
- Susan Beebe
I've had 2 Roombas, and they break VERY easily - at least the older models. There were battery issues galore too. Check the reviews of the newer models.
- shaun mclane
As someone who loves my roomba. I'll add some qualifications: 1. I only use it on carpet. 2. If you have rugs, they have to be well stuck down otherwise it can get caught up in them. 3. I bought the 'pet' version - which I understand has now been rolled into the mainline version. 4. I run mine every couple of days which is necessary - but painless since it works while I'm out. 5. I have to empty it every week, but that's a small price to pay for never vacuuming.
- Robin Barooah
Hi Ana, I can recommend the Sharp FP-P60CX Air Purifier. I bought it from here: http://www.vcdiscounter.com/fpp60cx... which was cheaper than elsewhere I looked. I did way more research into this purchase than can be considered sane. This dude's reviews are super in-depth - http://www.air-purifier-power.com/top-10-.... I went with the brand and the design ultimately.
- Biao
I just bought a $25 humidifier from Target. Really basic but it works for a small bedroom.
- EricaJoy
@Biao, wow, thank you for the great recommendation. I will get the one you did. Looks really good!
- Ana
You're welcome Ana. Looked at http://www.vcdiscounter.com/pap... and found out that vcdiscounter carries some new Sharp models you might want to consider.
- Biao
What I think would be most amazing is if you found a combo unit! Air purifier, humidifier, and roomba'er all in one! :D
- Adam Lasnik
Roomba is great. We haven't used ours much lately as it looks like Babies R Us exploded in our living room, but it is a great product.
- Louis Gray
Roombas don't work well and will disappoint you. Humidifiers need to be kept sterile or will make you sick. Air purifiers don't really work well, but at least they won't harm you. :-(
- Dror Shimshowitz
Our Beagle is our Roomba, but we use the Scooba to clean up after the Beagle sweeps up all the crumbs. We love it!
- Jesse Stay
"Our Beagle is our Roomba" - methinks that'd make a great bumpersticker! :)
- Adam Lasnik
Our beagle was our Roomba, but now, our Roomba is our beagle. See: http://www.louisgray.com/live... (Are the Beagle and the Roomba Conspiring? from November of 2006)
- Louis Gray
consider a sharp plasmacluster humidifier/air purifier. it's awesome, convenient, quiet, and relatively small. (btw, i have miserable hay fever, so i've done extensive research.)
- John Fu
if you're serious about your air purification (and i mean serious), get the IQ Air Health Pro Plus. it's big, industrial strength (like hospitals use it), and expensive, but worth every penny for ppl with serious allergies (me).
- Joyce H. Sohn
i did research in consumer reports and i bought a holmes brand air purifier. you can get at target or sears. it works well.
- Pokai
Done (well, except for the Roomba)! Thanks for the recommendations everyone... If anyone is interested, this is the humidifier I bought: http://www.amazon.com/Honeywe..., and this is the air purifier:...

From the page: "There will be no Nativity Scene in Washington DC this year! The Supreme Court has ruled that there cannot be a Nativity Scene in Americas's capital this Christmas season. This isn't for any religious reason, they simply have not been able to find Three Wise Men in the Nation's capitol, nor could they find a virgin. P.S. There was no problem, however, finding enough asses to fill the stable."

Now if they were looking for three wise guys...

"I'm also troubled by, not what Sen. McCain says, but what members of the party say, and it is permitted to be said such things as: "Well, you know that Mr. Obama is a Muslim." Well, the correct answer is: he is not a Muslim. He's a Christian. He's always been a Christian. But the really right answer is: What if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer is: No, that's not America. Is there something wrong with some 7-year-old Muslim-American kid believing he or she can be president?"
- Chris Baskind
The neocons, who have been working hard to work up a genocidal fury against Muslims (see, for instance, the current controversy about the Obsesssion video), cannot forgive Colin Powell for holding these views. This is the primary reason they drove him out of the Bush 43 administration.
- Sean McBride
Reasonable people condemn all forms of extremism from all religions and secular movements. They don't, like neoconservatives, obsessively focus on a single religion with the objective of igniting a global holy war on behalf of extremists from another religion.
- Sean McBride
Al Pasternak - doesn't Steven Emerson, the head of the Investigative Project, have close ties to Israel's Likud Party and their Greater Israel ideology? Even Fox News is condemning West Bank settlers these days.
- Sean McBride
One gets the impression that Akiva has been imbibing a good deal of ethno-religious fundamentalism over the years along with the mangoes.
- Sean McBride
Getting a handle on the ideological scripts that control our thoughts and emotions -- quite a problem. Who wrote the scripts and with what motives? The world is divided into programmers and the programmed, into script writers and sleepwalkers (and the financial interests which hire the script writers).
- Sean McBride
Well, we're getting no dialogue or discussion here about Steven Emerson's ties to Likud and Likud's political agenda. Par for the course. Most of the campaign to incite a holy war between "the West" and Islam is being generated by pro-Israel militants and the Likud wing of the Israel lobby. That is the plain truth. Data mine the facts.
- Sean McBride
I think some of you should look into 0bama's history, as you can't rely on the media to do it for you. Ever wonder why most of his past is covered up?
- Spencer
Apparently Spencer Scott got the neocon memo: Barack Obama is an anti-American traitor, terrorist and secret Muslim Arab.
- Sean McBride
I don't get the whole "Obama's secret history" thing... What do we not know about him? He's been in the limelight for almost 2 years now... he's published 2 auto-biographies... what do people think he's hiding? What parts of his life are un-accounted for?
- Lindsay
He absolutely sucks at Scrabble. That's his big secret.
- Akiva Moskovitz
The folks at Reynolds Wrap must be selling a ton of tinfoil right about now.
- Chris Baskind
I'm a conservative and I don't think Obama is anti-American. I don't even dislike him as a person, he seems very nice. Probably someone with whom I could enjoy a round of golf. But I also think he wants to move America closer to socialism. More government means less individual freedom. That's why I won't vote for him. Of course I won't vote for McCain for much the same reason. He would increase the size of government too.
- John Wright
Still waiting for Spencer to respond... I honestly want to know what parts of Obama's life have been hidden. As for Obama moving us toward Socialism, Bush and Congress did that a couple of weeks ago. We're already on the path, whether you like it or not.
- Lindsay
Neocons rarely engage in extended discussion, dialogue and debate. They tend to self-ghettoize and take random potshots from behind the walls of their cult compound.

Al - generally speaking, in terms of the topic of this thread, I would like to see an emphasis on overcoming ethnic, racial and religious differences and focusing on cooperative and creative work based on talent and meritocracy -- in other words, in pursuing the core vision of the American Founding Fathers. Al - and, I thought Colin Powell displayed considerable courage in expressing these sentiments. He will no doubt come under attack from many haters out there, in extremist forums like Free Republic.
- Sean McBride
Al - I probably don't have time to contribute to a dedicated blog on this topic, but I promise you that I will answer any points you direct at me here on Friendfeed as long as they are civil and substantive. Is there really much room for debate about the assertion that American ethnic and religious universalism is a good thing? Perhaps there is. :) Debate away. I prefer talentocracies to ethnocracies and theocracies. Most Americans do, I think.
- Sean McBride
Al - good enough. Question in this comment thread: do you agree with Colin Powell that Muslims deserve as much respect in American society as members of any other religious group -- Christians, Jews, Buddhists, etc.? Imo, Powell is simply expressing basic Americanism and American universalism.
- Sean McBride
If Obama's secrets are so well-hidden that they've escaped public scrutiny, how come it seems only xenophobic racist conservatives know about it? Oh yeah, cuz they're fabricated!
- Dread Pirate PJ
I giggle every time someone says Obama will "move us closer to socialism." Dude, we're just about as socialist as Europe, but instead of free health care and education we're taxed out our asses to make the corporations and richest folks richer. I'd guess I'm paying at least 50% of my income in taxes of one sort or another, and what do I get? Wars, subsidized oil companies, subsidized farming conglomerates, etc etc etc.
- Internet's Tad
At least in Europe I'd be taxed similarly and have public transportation, free health care of some sort and the possibility that my son could get a college education based on his merits, not his parent's checkbook.
- Internet's Tad
We're so close to socialism we may as well attack and annex Canada
- Dread Pirate PJ
PJ's quack prediction of the week: watch the neocons start discrediting Powell and suggesting he's had a "socialist, liberal secret life" all along, even before his time serving Bush senior. *gasp!* Could it be?!?
- Dread Pirate PJ
So your saying that both sides are cheating liars? Wow, I never saw that one coming.
- John Wright
More than "both sides." Barr vs. Baldwin has gotten nasty, and who knows what Nader vs. McKinney has been like (I haven't checked).
- Ontario Emperor
And I forgot Baldwin vs. Keyes, which makes McCain vs. Obama seem like a lovefest.
- Ontario Emperor
Agree, I think it is the entire political machine that is the problem. Everyone wants the power for their own personal reasons. And I doubt that any of them have our best interest in mind. I'm not sure there is a real solution. Power corrupts.
- John Wright
Bloom County was huge for me and my friends when we were in school. We even each had nicknames for each other of the different characters (I was Milo). We even successfully picketed our local small-town newspaper when they decided to stop running the strip. But when Bloom County ended, I tuned out. Everything that followed just didn't do it for me and felt like a betrayal. So, for me, it all ended a long, long time ago.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Yes, Akiva, he's quit before. I'm kind of the same way; if I saw the later stuff I looked at it, but I didn't make a special effort to seek it out.

I agree with Akiva, it ended a long time ago. I never got onboard with Opus.

"Recession? Global downturn? You’re joking, right? For in the alternate financial universe of film these normally terrifying terms are ambiguous, unthreatening and even, in some cases, downright exciting. In Hollywood, optimists are pointing back to the huge surge in cinema admissions after the Wall Street Crash of 1929 (audience figures jumped 58 per cent on the previous year) as a template for things to come. According to John Fithian, president of the National Association of Theatre Owners in America, in a recent interview in these pages, the numbers don’t lie. “In the past four decades there have been seven recession years in this country, and the box office has climbed strongly in five of those years,” he said. The strongest of those years was the most recent, in 2001, when US box office receipts rose by $650 million."
- RAPatton
from Bookmarklet
I think that one difference between 1929 and today is that today we have both cheap/free internet options plus things like Netflix. I'd be surprised if movie theaters aren't hit especially hard in this downturn.
- Thomas Hawk
I agree with Thomas. And taking it one step further, the quality of home theater systems means there are fewer movies I feel the need to see on the "big screen".
- John Wright
The other thing is I think that there is a backlash against the high price of movie theaters. At least for me with a big family it's so cost prohibitive. Movie theaters should consider offering bigger discounts. Kids under 5 free, bigger discounts on kids 5-12, etc. I liked it when the AMC theater in Burbank let me bring my own food in. More theaters should do that.
- Thomas Hawk
theatres aren't owned by Hollywood. -- content is -- whether you download, netflix, or see it in theatres, it still needs to be produced.
- Prolific Programmer
yeah but I bet that they make less money on content viewed at Netflix or downloaded for free on the internet than they do in movie theaters.

@Aden: Where would one start looking for this cane sugar version of Dr. Pepper?
- Cheryl Jones
I don't care if this makes me sound insane, but it's Dr Pepper not Dr. Pepper! You can order sugar-cane DP from the Dublin bottling plant. Hot Dr Pepper needs to be made with the sugar-cane stuff. (I did a DP vacation once to Texas.)
- Kendra <3 Three Lions
I've driven through Dublin, TX on the way elsewhere. I should have bought some.

I am not ashamed at all to say I have the empty cardboard husk of a 12-pack sitting in my fridge right now. It's wasting a bit of electricity, but also serves as a reminder to me that, yes, I do need to go out and get some Pepper at some point.
- Pete Delucchi
They need to be re-educated quickly. One wonders how they can possibly reconcile the extreme differences in viewpoints. I must take into account that I'm in NorCal, where the majority of people would probably vote for Obama or Clinton, had she won, and the minority who would vote for McCain probably do so for some sort of misperceived economic advantage (which is really a delusion), and they mostly don't really agree with Palin's viewpoints.
- Cathryn Hrudicka
I have generally voted Republican in the past as I am against big government and more in favor of personal freedom. I don't see either major party candidate as embracing less government. McCain might say it in his campaign but his past record indicates otherwise. Obama is quite open in his plan for more government programs. So for the first time I will likely be voting for a third party candidate.
- John Wright
@AJ: An aunt and uncle who are strong Clinton supporters don't like Obama. The others, because of Palin.

I didn't say I thought he was a good president. I just don't get my news from Hollywood. And the reason I don't like Bush is because he isn't a conservative. The government has grown more under Bush than any recent president, even Clinton. And that's saying something. Every time the government grows I have less freedom. We have less freedom in this country today than at any time since the revolution. And I only see more of the same with either of the two major candidates in this election.

My company has a huge investment in BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) infrastructure. Not likely to just toss that out and build out support for the iPhone.

John Wright, same as my workplace. *sigh*
- imabonehead
Roger, how long do you think it might take if it were to happen? What do you think the refresh cycle is on the equipment? And what might it mean to replace or merge into the backend? Or is the cost too great and there is effectively a lock-in for years to come no matter what any other company might provide?
- Loren Heiny
@Loren Well I am not a Mobile/Telecom guy but strictly from a business point of view iPhone isn't compelling enough a 'Tool' to convert hundreds of thousands of dollars in technical support, hardware, and software. Its not practical in a $$s sense. Additionally iPhone is an Apple product and Apple has never really played ball historically with business so there is some history too. Oh and one more thought, from a tax/investment perspective most companies won't turn over technology until after 3-5years. :)
- Roger Kondrat
My company is already talking about Enterprise iPhone support. One of my friends runs the servers for his company and they are doing the same thing. We are in very different sectors but both have iPhone support coming. It will be a perk in a year or two that you will see on recruiting pitches. Just watch.
- Andrew
I know a number of top execs from mobile companies here in the telecom corridor and they have iPhones too, or envy them, or are in denial. Yes we geeks talk about it all the time, and the web 2.0 crowd has woken up to mobile because of iPhone, but it really is a whole new game, and many in the industry have still not wrapped their heads around it all. Still, you can't count RIM out. Denial is a powerful force, and blindness to superior UI's and toleration of ugliness has a long history.
- Dean Terry

- Andrew Leyden
RIM might lose market share? to who? certainly not Apple, at least not for another 4-5 years.
- Bob Blunk
Until Apple can provide fine granular control of device policies that RIM has, they won't be able to break into big companies.
- Ernie Oporto
Bob, so you don't see RIM losing any existing customers to Apple? I know of one architectural firm that's switching. But agreed, a couple dozen users in one small business is inconsequential. To me, though, I'd watch what happens with new customers. That's where it's bound to be the most interesting.
- Loren Heiny
I agree with Ernie. Without the ability to issue policy groups of or individual devices there are going to be problems getting big companies to let go.

It was a show of hands thing so very informal. Could be 7 or 8 to 1 as well. Clearly the Pro crowd here though uses Canon over Nikon. Other manufacturers were not even mentioned. Strictly a Canon vs. Nikon show of hands thing.

When I was researching to buy my first DSLR, the consensus I found was Canon for pros, Nikon for amateurs. That was anecdotal because that's what everyone I talked to said was the practice, not necessarily the way it should be.

Canon is a MUCH larger company than Nikon. However, I just didn't like the feel of their cameras, and I prefer Nikon glass to Canon. That's what works for me.

I use Canon; it just works for me. YMMV. However, Canon's wide angle glass is not the greatest so I'm starting to look elsewhere for alternatives. The 21mm f/2.8 Distagon is insanely sharp but it's no longer in production and copies are priced into the stratosphere.
- Jauder Ho
hmm, that adds a new wrinkle to my decisions. One of the benefits(so I was told) of the Nikon is the ability to use the same lenses through the years? Personally I like Zeiss lenses, so whomever has those I tend to go w/.
- clarke thomas
I chose Canon for two reasons. The first was that it felt natural in my hands. The controls seemed to be where I would want them. The second (and perhaps more important) was that two of my friends friends have Canon. It's great going on a shoot and having double the arsenal of lenses. But I think both are great choices and the competition makes for better equipment for everyone.
- John Wright
Hmmm.. I agonized for weeks over what DSLR to purchase for my first one. I wavered back and forth between Canon and Nikon. Then, I went to the nest camera store here in Austin and ended up buying a.... Sony. It was the best bang for my buck and with the Minolta lens options available out there I have been very pleased with my decision. Of course, I'm no pro.
- Jeff Jones
@shelisrael1 - P&S cameras are a different world. The margins are razor thin and Canon is larger than Nikon; better able to absorb the costs. Nikon's recent statements indicate that it wants to focus on the higher end market. Given it's position against Canon, that's a wise move. It can't complete as a commodity.
- William Beem
I'd assume there's some selection bias in the attendees.

@shelisrael - I prefer Canon's point and shoot cameras to Nikon's (and just about everyone else's). The reason I didn't get a Canon SLR when I was in the first in the market? Because I have ginormous hands and the Rebel XT felt tiny in comparison to the D50 I eventually bought, and because I couldn't afford a 30D or 5D.
- cecily
We chose a Canon for our first DSLR on you a recommendation from a pro photographer.
- Robert
I'm not buying that poll. Maybe Canon has turned into Comcast and stocked the room?
- ThePicMan
And most "pro" drivers drive trucks and buses, but I'll stick to my BMW thanks. OK, not a brilliant analogy but everyone knows that Nikon has been playing catch up on the pro photography front. They have the line up now but the existing pros still have the legacy gear. it's going to be a long time before the balance shifts (if it does). Also, they used to say that nobody got fired for buying IBM, isn't that a better analogy on the photo front?
- Fraser Smith
Strange how a Pro camera poll has spawned so much debate about P&S and Prosumer models.
- ThePicMan
@clarke thomas - Zeiss has several lines of manual focus lenses that fit the Nikon and several other mounts. See http://twurl.nl/x2p15o. However, they do not have one that directly fits a Canon which will require the use of an adapter. On the flip side, due to the large diameter of the Canon lens mount, it is possible to use lens from quite a few vendors although you have to test for clearance from the mirror.
- Jauder Ho
Personally, I'm waiting to see if Zeiss will make an updated version of the 21mm Distagon. www.16-9.net is a useful resource if you are interested in lens comparisons. I would also add that the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 looks to be a pretty impressive lens too.
- Jauder Ho
I was about to ask/say the same thing Mark did... glad I read all the comments

How is putting your hands over your ears censorship?
- Ken Sheppardson
Because Dave isn't putting his hands over his own ears, he's putting them over the ears of everyone who is participating in the conversation. And beside, it's fucking hypocritical to talk about free speech and then hide from Loren by blocking him. He claims he wants to take a stand. Quit running from the person you have a beef with and take a stand. He's just being a coward the way he's acting.
- Tim Finucane
it might be time to tell the story behind what happened at podtech with loren.. re: loren and scoble. shel is acting all innocent but robert went after loren when he did work at podtech and as a result that caused Loren to lose his sponsorship away .shel is roberts partner and has tangled with loren on other occasions...so it was they who went after loren .. maybe it's time to set the record straight on this..
- John Furrier
John Furrier ? the founder of Podtech ? So you know what exactly transpired , why dont you break the ice and set the record straight ?
- Peter Dawson
Getting blocked by Dave Winer is a right of passage on the web. Dave has had some very famous feuds like with Calacanis at Gnomedex or Curry about PodShow. I'm surprised it took him so long to jump in on this one.
- Rob Safuto
take it as a badge of honor.. I know I would
- David Parmet
and just like that John just kicked this little soap opera up to 2.0... man, revenge by puppetry is a bitch!
- Tyler Crowley
Dave Winer is blocking everyone... I just got blocked. hahahahahaha....
- Jason Calacanis
It's good that John is telling the truth. Scoble and Shel got Loren fired... they went after him, and then Loren went after them.
- Jason Calacanis
Thanks for giving the shout out to John, Jason. John Furrier was always good and honest to me.
- loren feldman
In the final analysis, all social media will have been about personal vendettas writ large.
- J T. Ramsay
Isn't it clear why Loren was fired? Wasn't it because of the outrage from the public over his videos the public deemed racist? Had he been at Coke or Microsoft, he would have been fired as well. It continued even most recently with his continued horrible treatment of Julia Allison.
- Mark Lepzig
Remind me not to get on your bad side, Loren. Also, most of the folks commenting on this entry I have not subscribed to yet.. proof that there are different circles of people here on FF.
- Phil G
Yeah, I blocked Whiner a while ago. I don't mind if you disagree with me as long as you respect my opinion. Obvious that Whiner doesn't condone disagreement. So much for embracing diversity...

We deplore and vigorously oppose legislation and executive action that deprive the people of their rights secured under the Fourth and Fifth Amendments under the guise of "combating terrorism" or "protecting national security." Examples of such legislation are the National Security Act, the USA PATRIOT Act, and the proposed Domestic Securities Enhancement Act (colloquially known as "Patriot II"), and the Military Commissions Act.
- Ontario Emperor
Article 1, Section 9, Clause 2: "The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it." The threat of Terrorism has not been claimed to be a rebellion or an invasion.
- Ontario Emperor
Too bad the single-party government we have now will do all they can to stifle any so-called "third party" out there.
- Dave Roth
So, Dave, I suspect that in the fall, McCain and Obama will claim that this is "the most momentous election in history" and talk about "the stark differences between me and my opponent." Dave, when you hear these statements, will you break out in uncontrollable laughter? Or will it be uncontrollable tears?
- Ontario Emperor
from fftogo
Do you also deplore and oppose any legislation and executive action that deprives people of their rights secured under the Second Amendment? I would hope so. Most people that defend the Fourth and Fifth Amendments conveniently forget about the Second.
- John Wright

Yeah, like the other networks don't? Every major news media company slants the news and reports what they want you to hear to further their agenda. None of them are completely objective.
- John Wright
Definitely true, but I do wish they'd all admit it openly. News can't be objective. It's always subjective, in one way or another. Either we report it with a bias, or we pick the subjects we report "objectively" based on the agenda we want to push. Objective, unbiased, "spin-free" news is hogwash.
- Raoul Pop
That is why I don't watch the news anymore. Not even the BBC is truely objective and have in recent times changed to the same type of sensationalist tripe the ad supported networks scream at us.
- Travis Koger
The thing is, Travis, no one is objective in reporting the news. I'm certainly not objective. Anyone who says they are is likely either lying to you or to themselves.
- Raoul Pop
Theres nothing quite like the Tour de France.
- Mike Reynolds
The music gets on my nerves, but yeah, Lance is amazingly inspirational. What he did is just fantastic.
- Raoul Pop
Very cool. That was the day Lance faked like he was having a bad day. The TV cams were all over him as he grimaced and 'struggled' to stay on his team mates wheel. Then when they hit the base of the final climb US Postal just exploded the race. Ullrich was a great rider but never had the answer to an acceleration like that on a climb. Go back to the '98 Tour and you'll see Marco Pantani make Jan look just as foolish.
- John Wright
No way I would pay $250 a year. But I certainly would be willing to pay something if it would help the service improve on stability.

- Morton Fox

how could try provide that for the people that pay and leave everyone else in the dust .. kinds sounds like extortion to me
- John Blanton
I'd be willing to pay $20 a year, as I did with Pownce, but anything beyond that would be unlikely. I love Twitter, but it's far from a necessity for me.
- Evan Sims
I'd consider it; but I'm not sure I would feel any assurance that my paying a subscription would guarantee any uptime...
- Phil Crissman
That's more than I pay for hosting, for 2 sites. I like Twitter, but not that much.
- Mike McBride
If all I was paying for was uptime, I would stop using Twitter. You should provide the same uptime, no matter what kind of account you have.

In more stable times I have said that I would pay $10/mo for a twitter w/o rate limits. So I'd probably pay $20/mo for a stable twitter w/o rate limits
- Bastard Operator From FF
Never. I would just stick with FF then.
- Jacob Nahin
Not a chance. I don't think I would even pay $20/year. Uptime is something that should be expected.
- Bob
No way I'd pay $20 a month for twitter. It's fun, but not that fun. I pay $25 per year for a pro account on flickr, so maybe $20 a year for twitter.
- John Wright
No, because most likely my friends wouldn't pay for it and then it wouldn't be any fun.
- Eric Florenzano
Funny how someone always proclaims that they would just build their own. Really? Your time is worth that little? How much do you make an hour? How many hours would it take you to build, promote and support your own version of twitter? Who would you have to talk to on "your" version?
- Lon
Yes. I would pay a yearly fee for a "pro" account.
- Lon
I think $20 is way overpriced for what Twitter does.
- Gadiel Rivera
I'd pay for Twiter pro, but $20 p/month would be too much, considering what Flickr charges.
- jjprojects
from twhirl
Flickr only charges $24.95/year for a pro account. I think that would be enough.
- Morton Fox
This is a classic collective action problem. If enough people decided to move to Pownce or Jaiku or some other platform, they could do it for free. Weirdly, the internet seems to be failing at one of its chief promises: solving the collective action problem.
- mrshl
No thanks. With a pro account you'd get? Filesharing, storage, uptime, more robust features...sounds nothing like Twitter!
- Bryan Landers
I would not pay anything for it. There are too many other free services.
- wrecks
I would pay for an open protocol to be developed for collaborative messaging
- Jonathan Beckett
Things in life that are addictive: digital photography, Flickr, Tommy's cheeseburgers, those tangy sea salt and vinegar blue chips in the blue bag, coffee, Red Bull, and friendfeed.
"It is by will alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the can of Red Bull that thoughts acquire speed, the clothes acquire stains. The stains become a warning. It is by will alone I set my mind in motion." [sips Red Bull]

I also agree with NFL Football (but would also add the EPL), the Office (but would also add 30 Rock). Oh, and FriendFeed. Also agree with coding (but would add mathematics). I've pretty much ruined this thread. }-{ELLO!

Mine would be cycling, digital photography, Flick/Twitter/FF, cappuccinos. Just like drugs all of these have a "gateway" drug. Mountain biking led to road biking. Starbucks led to Peets. Minolta F100 led to Rebel XT led to 20D led to 5D. Email led to web surfing, led to Facebook led to Twitter led to FF. Hi, my name is John and I'm and addict... Everyone? Hi John...

I find that I'm going to Flickr's most recent photos from my contacts much less than I used to and going to friendfeed to view my contacts and imaginary contacts flickr photos much more.
Your behavior makes sense. In Flickr you can only see photos and videos, while in FriendFeed you can see everything. You're going to have more incentive to go to the latter.
- Ontario Emperor
@Ontario Emperor, not only this but on Flickr you can only see the last 5 photos that your contacts upload from the most recent photo page. This means that anytime someone uploads more than 5, all but the most recent 5 get buried. FriendFeed is a much smarter way to browse your Flickr contacts photos. Now if only there was a way to mass add all of my flickr contacts as either existing FriendFeed accounts or if not imaginary.
- Thomas Hawk
I find i'm using Zooomr much less (nearly zero) than i once had. An upload bug afflicted my account in November 2006 and i still cannot upload. The friends i had hoped to draw there lost interest.
- John Lam
This happens when you later "replace" the photo, for instance after a last minute edit in Picnic. I agree that this is annoying. On the other hand, it forces one to think twice before pressing the "export" button!
- Guillaume Lemoine
I saw one on your FF. The popup says it's 'Lyrical", but that photo shows up earlier in the group. Is that a photo that you uploaded and then replaced? Or did you do an edit in Flickr? Not sure, but possible explanation? [edit - all the photos in a group have the same popup as the first photo, so that doesn't tell us which photo it was.]
- John Wright
I think Flickr on FriendFeed is still a tad wonky as cool as it is. @John Wright, I never replace photos or edit photos on Flickr. All of my photos are uploaded as is. It is odd that the title pop up for all my photos in an upload session show the same title (as in the "Lyrical" example).
- Thomas Hawk
It happened to me the other day: I wasn't satisfied with the settings on the picture but only noticed AFTER I had uploaded it to flickr. I felt compelled to say "sorry" as a comment on my own flickr feed in FF for the rude caption "unavailable". I suppose it might be better to just find a way to not have these "unavailable" pics show up anymore... Is FF listening?
- Alex von Halem
It also happens if you do antyhing to modify the photo. I rotated one the other day (no clue how it ended up rotated the wrong way on Flickr) and saw that.
- Benjamin Golub
We should handle this better. Right now, FriendFeed saves all entries it sees, and we don't handle updates very well.
- Bret Taylor
