A Black Hole Engine That Could Power Spaceships [Mad Science - http://io9.com/5391989...
I knew that small black holes (any size actually, though larger ones take longer - didn't know they had to be non-rotating) eventually disappear completely via Hawking radiation, but I failed to appreciate the energy would have such a magnitude due to it being derived from all the mass of the black hole (unlike a mere 1% in nuclear reactions).I wonder if the other civilizations in the... more... - Michael from email
From the paper itself: "As an aside, let us note that building a single SBH would be the ultimate particle Physics experiment. As the remnant BH radiated it would go through every temperature up to the Planck scale. Careful study of its radiation would tell us exactly what particle types exist in nature, beyond the energy of any imaginable accelerator. Perhaps a future society would carry out such an experiment, even if all proposals for applications fail." - Michael from email
Wow, setting up a network printer with Ubuntu #Karmic was a snap. That used to be one of Linux's weaknesses. Big improvement!
@dietmarw ...and he was apparently voted 30th on the list of "greatest Britons".

From the Daily Mail: "The trouble with a 'scientific' argument...is that it is...relying solely on empirical facts". Is that a criticism?

Question: Has NASA ever proposed seeding life on Mars? Would be fascinating. Would muddy the waters on pre-existing life though I suppose.
Home.
On flight, full moon was on the opposite side of the plane as the sun at dusk. Powerful illusion that it was only 50 miles away. Amazing!
Hoping to slam down some lunch before flight home.
When I get back to work I'm going to try running Ubuntu #Karmic as my main OS with WinXP virtualized inside it.
Enjoying a sunny day in Houston between wedding and reception. Rumor has it I might even get a nap in.
