How much attention should I give to my term's OCI numbers? My keyword has great numbers in every other aspect but I made the mistake of not looking at the OCI number when I chose the word. I recently used MS to pull up some related keywords and realized the OCI on my main word is 2% (gasp)!
I use OCI numbers only as a tie breaker between two niches. I would not use it as a major numeric decision variable. 2% is pretty low. If you can give us a screenshot of the MS data (without revealing niches to protect yourself) of the data, it would help answer.

Bridgett, you obviously missed Ed's tweet that said this: "MUST READ!! Best post I've ever seen on this board! http://ff.im/-my0L " My failure can become your wisdom - check it out.

My keyword numbers are as follows: Searches= 487, SEOT=204, SEOC=34500, AWT=13, AWCPC=$0.24, AWCTR=2.67%,,, and the dreaded OCI score of 2%.

I am getting a decent amount of traffic - just not a lot of clicks through to my product.

These are pretty good traffic numbers. The one number that concerns me is the CPC=$0.24. What this says to me is that on a per unit basis, there does not seem to be a lot of profitabiilty in this niche. I had followed (and still following) a sort of literary niche in August and found CPC numbers at this level also. Just like the "quotes" example given in the 30DC thread mentioned above, this one appears similar

I believe the Low awcpc indicates a low number of purchases.. the higher the number the greater the CPC because it converts to buyers

Mark and Frank - great points. I hadn't put those two together and it makes perfect sense. And Michael - thanks for the link to the forum entry. It is very helpful.

Do not get discouraged though. I do not know the details of this niche and more importantly - What is the nature of the competition? If there is a hole in the top 10 competitors, it may still be worth going after. I am simply reacting to what I see. Please anyone challenge this thinking if it is not clear. I am very open to constructive criticism. You may also consider looking at micro-niche within this niche using more refined keyword phrases that are less competitive.

I always ask ... What would Dan Raine do...but the the answer is always dance naked in the Back Garden...so it's not always that useful

I am getting some good traffic here compared to any other blog I've done so far so I am going to keep going with it for another week or so and see what happens. I am going to do some more research in my other niche keywords to see if I can just optimize it for those words. It's strange to see that my traffic is coming from related keywords that happened to make it into my blog without my realizing how good they would be.

Bridgett.. Personally I would get it to the ranking you desire, then set up a schedule.. Write one original article a week, post two or three "reprints" and bookmark them well.... then work on your next blog.... Is 4 or 5 hours a week worth the money it is/will bring in? When you have 10 blogs bringing in more money than that one... then let it fall by the side :-)
