Paul Buchheit's blog should have a line at the top, saying, "Dude, I invented friggin' GMail. Have you heard of it?"
Oh my God. That is so hilarious. - niniane
Get a clue dude! - Susan Beebe
YES - Josh Haley
I second that. (huh. I had already Liked this and remember doing so, but which year was it?) - Micah

"I've long been fascinated by the common human illusion that ideas can be sorted into good and bad, when all experience shows this not to be the case. We could play the game all day long where I describe a simply terrible idea and then tell you about the people who got rich implementing it just right. Let's try a few... How about a comic strip that is literally a bunch of stick figures? It will be called XKCD and have no discernable characters. Done! It's the most viewed comic on the Internet. How about a movie about two gay cowboys? Done! Academy Award! How about a comedic TV show about a Nazi concentration camp? Done! It was called Hogan's Heroes and was a hit in its time. How about a Broadway musical about a bunch of frickin' cats? Done! You'd be hard pressed to come up with an idea so bad that it couldn't succeed with the right execution. And it would be even harder to imagine a great idea that couldn't fail if the execution were left to morons. Ideas are worthless. Execution is everything." - Paul Buchheit from Bookmarklet
Words to consider for everyone who hates remakes and sequels: "Movies are good or bad because of execution, not concept. [...] The self-appointed movie critics went on to point out that Office Space was already a movie, so there was no room left in the universe for a Dilbert movie. That's a bit like saying there's no point in creating a romantic comedy because someone already did that one. It's a fundamental misunderstanding of what a movie is." - Mark Trapp
I suspect that remakes and sequels are hurt by reversion to the mean and the need to be different. - Paul Buchheit
Hogan's Heroes was actually about a POW camp for Allied airmen, which is orders of magnitude easier to make a comedy about than a concentration camp. - Gabe
Good point, Gabe. - Bruce Lewis

The answer for GMail is pretty weak. Allowing POP/IMAP for realtime access is totally different then allowing backups. Anyone who's tried to setup GMail backup via POP knows what I'm talking about. It ain't easy, especially given the way they limit POP access. - Steve and 4 other people
Steve, I actually thought the backup was quite nice: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog... . That said, I would love if there was a way to click a button and download your email in a tarball or zip easily. Or maybe pay $5 and get a DVD with your email snail-mailed to you. :) - Matt Cutts

What? No lawyers in suits? Mark's setting a pretty low bar on the dress code for this sort of thing...:) - Tomas Remotigue
Our lawyers were wearing shorts actually -- no air conditioning at their office on Sundays I guess. - Paul Buchheit
Zuckerberg's the only one from FB who could be bothered to show up? - Andy Bakun
American big business such a formal affair - Robert Higgins
Contrary to popular misconception, lawyers don't actually enjoy wearing suits. Haul us into work on a Sunday, and we'll definitely be dressing comfortably. :) - Brian Chang

Congrats and best wishes for the future. - Jeff Stannard
For $50m you could at least have hired a photographer who doesn't shake so much. :) - Rodrigo Jaroszewski
FF was the cutting edge whereas FB is quickly becoming the mainstream. Unfortunately, the mainstream does not necessarily equal innovation and pushing the envelope. We all suffer when innovation is chilled. But on the other hand, congrats to the FF crew. They made their money! - blackChinahand
I think the Tiger suit would have been more appropriate! But hey....shorts in a backyard is pretty cool too. - Drea Lester

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! - Mathew™ aka Youngblood
I don't get the negativity - did no one realize FriendFeed was a business? The object of a business is to sell eventually (either privately or publicly). We should be celebrating their success. This is a huge win for them, as well as Facebook. I personally think it's a huge win for the "loyal users" as well. So now we stab them in the back when they do something huge? - Jesse Stay
Not to mention we know *nothing* about what this will mean for both services. These guys haven't let us down yet, have they? - Jesse Stay
Congratulations to all of you!! - Steve de Mena

Congratulations Paul, you should have got more, but I guess $50m is nothing to sneeze at. Have a great wedding anniversary too, I'm sure you both deserve it. Much happiness - :) - Chris Loft
Congrats! The hard work paid off - Becca
Those are the kind of business meetings I could get used to - no suits... but selling to Facebook? Hmmm... Good for someone of course but I suppose we'll see where this ride takes us. - Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
Congratulations, FriendFeeders! I'm anxious to see what changes this will bring. FriendFeed is my favorite site to visit, so hopefully y'all will find a way to maintain the FF spirit somehow. - Keith Pelczarski
No matter the type of big change, there are those who will not like it, often simply because it's change. I for one am very pleased that two of the services I use most are joining forces, and am eager to see the new developments that come of this acquisition. Congrats to EVERYONE on the FriendFeed team. You all deserve it! You've done a great job with a small company. Now lets see what you can do with a large one :) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Nicely put, guruvan. - Anne Bouey
Congratulations - Steve C
@Jesse Stay re: "the objective of business is to sell eventually" : Ummm, the objective of many businesses is to become profitable by providing a valuable experience to their users. Businesses that feel they can't do that are the ones that sell. - Shane Gibbons
LOL! ♫ ♫ "ooh, take the money and run"!! ♫ ♫ ;) - Vincenzo Piromalli
Congratulations to everyone involved. Well done. - Darius Dunlap
This is a very sad day in friend feed history. It is horrible because I like friend feed for how it's different from face book. I use facebook but I find it really annoying and I wouldn't use it if my friends and family weren't using it. So if Friend Feed becomes another facebook then i donno if I will keep coming to friend feed. - Colide81 (James) from iPhone
Grats. :) - Joshua Schnell
Congrats to the FF staff, but you'll have to pardon my lack of exuberance. I have mental pictures of being forced to use the FB UI and it makes me sad =( - FFing Enigma
Very happy for the Friendfeed team. These pictures say it all. - Christian Burns from iPhone
Congrats -- may the FF UI stay alive! - RateBrain
Where are the photos of everyone celebrating? No beer or champagne? - Shane
Great match-up guys ! The Fabulous Friender Boys ! - Let's see some integrated mashups and extensible apps and FF UI. Given Google and Twitter a run for their money... Looks like they are going to have to "hook-up" now ! - Mike Schmidt
Congratulations Paul and the team! Hopefully we'll still get the same simple UI for FriendFeed. I'm sure however that no matter what you do, things will turn up nicely. - Ovidiu Predescu
Enjoy! - Paul Mayne
NOOOOO! I _LOVE_ friendFeed and this will change it forever. Yeah - this will improve Facebook. Great deal guys - I can not wait to see how this works out - Ric Johnson

@Scobleizer: Come on you're a genius and can not realize future of FF? Turkey was one of important countries which is using FF! They asked no one about this! We hate fcking morons and stupid people on facebook, and I'm sure that this post will be real, just read it: http://ff.im/6pRmM - AlpB.
But Ahmed you are still being an ass about it, trying to rain on their good times. Go find a hole under the bridge where you belong. You can be sad and not have to come out all bitchy about stuff. Clear thoughtful comments instead of going all into "fuck you" mode. - Rasmus Lauridsen

NO Congrats or whatsoever "to Paul, Bret, and the whole FriendFeed gang. But I hope you bring a big shot of openness into the Facebook ecosystem, because it doesn't feel that way right now." Matt, dear! You Stole My Words! ROFL :)))) Just curious - is there anything more important than money? It seems NOT ROFLMAO - Lora Lufark
lots of truthiness in that statement. - Sushubh
I am sad. No congratulation at all. - bellegarde-webb
Besides being closed, Facebook has never adequately addressed serious privacy issues in its past. I strongly distrust them as a company and I'm sad to hear that they're gobbling up a service and a group of people I do trust. But if both services end up being elevated to FriendFeed's high standard then this will be a great day in hindsight. - Doug Beeferman
Well put doug, I feel same way: I trust FF, I dont trust FB. I'm skeptical this acquisition will change FB enough for me to trust it, but we'll see. - Evan Parker from Android
Facebook is a cult - Joe Dawson
Has anyone got an idea for a friendfeed alternative? - Ru Viljoen
Ru, I think Hellotxt.com might be a decent alternative to Friendfeed (it can also post to Friendfeed for you so you can keep your feed if you wish). I may start using it instead. Not sure. There's also identi.ca which claims to be adding more features for cross-posting. They use the Opensource Laconi.ca platform - PurpleZoe
thx for suggestions but looks like those are both exclusively microblogging platforms. - Ru Viljoen
no congrats, but I agree with the rest. - Kamilah Reed (K. Gill)
Identi.ca is mostly a microblog (I hear cross-posting networks should be enabled soon), but Hellotxt.com is a lifestream (you can cross-post and etc across networks) I believe. Unfortunately it's slow at times. I'll miss Friendfeed if it gets sucked into the Facebook network, instead of remaining a stand-alone app. Not at all happy about the acquisition. - PurpleZoe
3 other possibilities: lifestream.fm, Socialthing.com and possibly Streamy.com - PurpleZoe
Now might be a good time for socialthing to exit private beta and enter public - Ru Viljoen
Agreed. - PurpleZoe

FriendFeed has been almost completely blocked in Iran as far as we can tell. We have a large number of very active Iranian users, and we noticed a steep decline in activity yesterday. Graph below.
FriendFeed-Iran-Blocking.png
:( :( - Rachel Lea Fox
Related to the election? - τorƍue
that's so bad... - Eren Emre Kanal
:-( - Kevin Fox
τorƍue: Yes, as far as we know - Bret Taylor
Bret: Is this based on IP numbers located in Iran, or actual activity from those users? If it's IP based, it'd be interesting to see the activity on a user basis and see if they've been able to route around the blocking. - Ken Sheppardson
Could it be related to Twitter being blocked (and therefore the twitter traffic import being blocked)? - Stephan Osmont
): - Jim Norris
Some users are definitely going through proxies. This is total # of unique visits from IPs originating in Iran - Bret Taylor
That tells it's own, sad, story. - WoH: Professor MOTHRA
:((( - Oguz Serdar
Wow. - Rochelle
If Twitter were blocked and FriendFeed weren't, I'd expect an uptick in FriendFeed activity, not a 92% drop. - Kevin Fox
I.e. given all the users who've previously accessed the site from an Iran IP number, how many have been active from different numbers in the past 2 days. - Ken Sheppardson
Instead of "liking" this, shouldn't we have an "unlike" button? - Steven Melfi
:( Bret: According to Stephen fry, these are the iran proxies: 218.128.112.18:8080 218.206.94.132:808 218.253.65.99:808 219.50.16.70:8080 . Can you track these IPs? - Roberto Bonini
I knew this day was coming. Too bad. - Robert Scoble
Steven - same feeling here. I always feel weird "liking" bad stories on FF - Mike Bracco
How does traffic from China look? Or North Korea? - τorƍue
do not like :( - Tamara
@τorƍue Twitter has been restored in China - Stephan Osmont
Hey... we saw issues with blogfa.com as well: http://blog.spinn3r.com/2009... - Kevin A. Burton
like for spread but not like for the situation - Imprenditore
I wonder what the international community can do about stuff like this. Eventually the "bad guys" will lose. - Michiel Sikkes
Hopefully, we'll never see a graph like this for Turkey... - Onur Şentüre
Man... :( That's really a corrupt government. Hope it gets better soon. - Peter
That's horrible. - @barisunver #beyn.org
Kheyzaran mentioned over the weekend that both Twitter and FF were blocked for Iran starting I believe on Friday. He is using a proxy when possible to keep us updated - FFing Enigma
Bret, any analysis about how many people unable to access FF directly are still able to access it via proxy? - Daniel Dulitz
:-( - bookmeister
So sad... - Luka
Sigh :( - Havang
I doubt any regular North Koreans have computers τorƍue - Eric - Back to the Grill
Daniel: Well, we are still getting a bunch of Farsi comments and posts. They may be Persians from outside Iran or from Iranians using proxies. We don't have a detailed analysis breaking those down at this point. - Bret Taylor
The stigmata of evil. - Tim Tyler
all cominucation devices are blocked .even phone & cell phones ! - MohammadReza
Watching the "guerrilla cyberwarfare" aspect of the elections and reactions has been fascinating. Iran's universities are obviously full of resourceful, passionate geeks. - John Craft
not good in terms of freedom - Sheri Fresonke Harper
this is really bad. i hope there's some resolution to this. the people or iran have shown a lot of strength and courage to protest the illegitimacy of recent events. i don't think this will stop things - Cee Bee
please help us , we are under attack ,change friendfeed logo if you can - فرزاد
@MVB we all are Protests - MohammadReza
That's sad. - EricaJoy
:( Dislike. - Ruchira S. Datta
P.S. Kevin should turn the logo green in support of the Iranian's being disenfranchised. - EricaJoy
:(( - رامین
For those that are in Iran: Have you tried http://fftogo.com as a workaround? - FFing Enigma
I'm completely for having a fair vote, but I'm not sure that I'd want to try and align FriendFeed with a particular candidate, which is what a green logo would imply. - Kevin Fox
Many iranians using proxies to access FF. and therefore their IPs changes to fake IP . - آدمیرال
MohammadReza: Maryam's mom is still able to call her relatives and friends in Tehran, so they are keeping some voice traffic open, if not all. - Robert Scoble
Farshad, I'm trying to post news here: http://friendfeed.com/world-n... - Kol Tregaskes
@Kevin, totally understandable. - EricaJoy from IM
If Iran thinks they have nothing to fear, then why block Friendfeed? - Frode Stenstrøm
Frode: because the government is like China: they believe that by retarding the flow of information they will reduce the threat of protests and governmental overthrow. - Robert Scoble
Very reminiscent of the prelude to the fall of the Shah - Alan Morris
I don't speak Persian, so I don't know all the searches, but there are still (luckily) a lot of Persian users posting: http://friendfeed.com/search.... If you are Persian and looking for updates, try our search engine to find the few users who still have access. - Bret Taylor
Frode: and in Iran's case, they are run by conservative religious authorities and they don't like the fact that they are not in control of information flow like they used to be. They like to think they can still control information sources and, since they can't, they try to block places where their citizens can go to share information. - Robert Scoble
is it a joke? iranian users seems the %90 of friend feed. it could not be real! - Fırat Demirel
Firat: There are no units on the vertical axis of the chart. - Ken Sheppardson
Firat: This is a chart of traffic from Iran, not of FF's total traffic. - Kevin Fox
Firat, i doubt that this graph is a percentage graph... probably more likely that it's measuring hits, sessions, or total data transfered (mb, kb, etc) - Chris Heath
Kevin: what impact did this have on FF's overall traffic? - Robert Scoble
Robert: Iran is the #6 country for FriendFeed in terms of page views per day. - Bret Taylor
something is cooking out there... - mehdi
Thanks all for answers. i told that it could not be real.. :) excuse me, i ve just read Bret's notice and looked at breaking point. i saw what i've missed before.. bad news for ff and iran.. :( - Fırat Demirel
These statistics are incredible, especially the normally heavy useage of FF in Iran. - Curt Mercadante
Bret Taylor, we can tag our pix and vids about iran election by an english keyword such as 'iran' or 'iranelection'. I think it will help to ff non-persian users to find out more about unrests in iran. - آدمیرال
Iran restored cell phone service Sunday that had been down in the capital since Saturday. But Iranians still could not send text messages from their mobile phones, and the government increased its Internet filtering in an apparent attempt to undercut opposition voices. Social networking sites including Facebook and Twitter were also not working. - Üstün Üzüm
Do *not* like. :( - Pete D

I can't find any evidence of Twitter being blocked in Iran. Anyone? - Martin Bryant
TechCrunch just picked this up: http://www.techcrunch.com/2009... - Robert Scoble
Thanks for the translation آدمیرال ! - Ross Miller
ممنونم آدمیرال عزیز - younes
خواهش دوست من. - آدمیرال
martin: those words are not mine actually from a news article from washinton post. - Üstün Üzüm
On twitter people are retweeting the IPs and ports of unblocked proxies, can we do something like that here? - Canageek
martin, i'm from iran. twitter is blocked. what evidence you wanna? screenshot!? - آدمیرال
yes Canageek. we use proxies for tweeting - آدمیرال
Authorities blocking the internet are just reinforcing solidarity between people, can't they understand ? - stanjourdan
Stanislas: not to mention they encourage their smartest and richest people to leave (the ones who have technical skills). There's a reason why Silicon Valley has 10,000 or more Iranians living here. Their government sucks and the people are getting tired of it. Of course if their government was great I would never have met my wife (who grew up in Tehran). So, there is good to come out of a crappy government! :-) - Robert Scoble
it has always seemed to me that the iranian user base is ENORMOUS here. wow. unbelievable. - edythe
It is interesting how much civil unrest that is brewing across the globe towards their governments. The knee jerk reactions in attempting to block certain websites shows how much they didn't expect the net to become such a widespread conduit for cutting through the bs and informing those that wish to know. I wish those who take a stand all the best. - alphaxion
:( - Roberto
Another way for those that are in Iran is to access through Netvibes (but I don't know if it works or if it's blocked too), adding Friendfeed, Gmail and so on such as modules - Roberto
Thanks for sharing this, Bret. It's valuable evidence of what's going on, evidence which wouldn't have been available even a few years ago. - Michael Nielsen
Very interesting...so much for democracy and voting rights in Iran... - freedom fighter mom
If anybody in Iran feels up to it, can you temporarily disable your proxy and run a traceroute to friendfeed.com and twitter.com then post the results here? - EricaJoy
Bret and Paul, can you let us know if the traffic comes back, which would tell us they've unblocked FriendFeed? - Robert Scoble
Robert: absolutely, we will let everyone know when it comes back up - Bret Taylor from email
Steven: You Like that it was posted, not the content of the post. - Tanath
Bret, thanks for sharing the info about the dive. Shame, but what could we have expected from the Iranian status quo? - Jon Osterholm

Yes, Friendfeed is blocked in Iran. Right now the papers and TV channels here are ‎controlled by the government and our access to satellite channels is blocked too. ‎Friendfeed and Twitter are quite vital for us now. Our main source of exchanging ‎information and news is Friendfeed. Via Friendfeed we let everyone know that where ‎people need help and where to go and how to help them and... more... - شیشلیک، نعناپونه و ریحون
Selma: does https://friendfeed.com/ work for you? - Bret Taylor
Nope, they have blocked all https addresses, we have had to sign in to Friendfeed via anti-filters for the past few months. - شیشلیک، نعناپونه و ریحون

I just spoke with my friend Andres, the main BBC correspondent for the Middle East/Afghanistan, and he mentioned the web is being fire walled in Iran much the same as the the "Great Firewall" during last year's Olympics in China. - sofarsoShawn
The Iranian websites that people used to exchange information about the election protests ‎in Iran are under cyber-attacks by the government forces and from anonymous sources. ‎Many of them are down right now. These Iranian websites were our few last remaining ‎channels to inform people. What can we do about that? Is there anyone out there who can help us with this?‎ - امین
i was 53rd active user in friendfeed until this filtering. now i can open FF with proxies and if i can fine. a Vpn but many Vpn here come from companies that have relations with security services, i thunk they allow us to bypass filternig and then, they will arrest who has wrote against their goals - خیزران
Can't we transfer the data/databases of the sites you, iranian guys, use to any new domain we could buy? I want to help. Not by throwing rocks to "security service" forces, but, at least, by making possible for what YOU have to say to go public, worldwide. - Zackatoustra

The reason I ask is because if you can email a post, then try sending it to share@friendfeed and also to YourUserName@friendfeed. Then when someone comments you'll receive an email about it and you can comment back to the thread via email as well. - FFing Enigma

One more thing: All of our iframe embeds (including search) support a css=URL parameter to enable custom style. We haven't documented it yet, but see http://friendfeed.com/buildin... for an example and howto, and http://www.building43.com/ to see it live.

Paul, first tried to embed in the post, but did not work out. Then I embedded the search in a sidebar widget, that worked: http://www.amsterdam20.nl - any tips how to make the embedding working in a regular WP 2.8 post? Or is this not possible b/c it is an iframe? TIA! - Jeroen De Miranda
Ah this was what i was looking for. - Burcu Dogan
Nice - very cool. - Cliff Gerrish
Is there any chance of losing the scroll bar? I know you can manually increase the height but would really like this frame to automatically grow on my site. Or is this technically impossible atm? Either way, a very cool feature. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Paul.. thanks for the "undocumented update".. it's nice to have such open access to what's happening at FriendFeed. I'm used to the "Wall of Silence" from Google and THAT gets old and extremely frustrating fast. - Chris Myles
Kol, I think you are a little out of luck.. since an Iframe is just a "window" to another URL, the main page needs to define the size. Without it the browser would need to load every iframe page just to determine how to render the main one. However It would be nice to have an embedded option that allows the "N more comments" concept (more details here http://ff.im/4fGzH), it takes up... more... - Chris Myles
Chris, so the iframe is not the way forward? What alternatives could achieve this? I don't mind putting in some code to embed my FF posts properly (with a frame). - Kol Tregaskes
Kol, I'm not sure where you got the impression I don't think Iframes are the way forward, I was addressing your issue of "losing the scrollbar". An Iframe is the only way to get "real time" updates.. you could always roll your own javascript, ff API , DOM based utility but it would only get you the content at the time of the API call. If the FF team thought http://ff.im/4fGzH was a good... more... - Chris Myles
So there is no other way to get real-time updates without an iframe? Once we can get rid of the scrollbar then I can use it on my site. - Kol Tregaskes
FF can only update pages they own! BTW in its current form I think the benefits of an embedded FF post (or group etc) far outweigh any minor side effects of a scrollbar. I'd love to use friendfeed as my entire blog commenting system, I'm just waiting for a couple of things (http://ff.im/3TfED) to automate the process. - Chris Myles
We would love to embed a private room on internal Deki Wiki. The last time I tried it still had the sidebar. I will try again to see if you have made it possible to do this. - Christian Burns from iPhone
The minute I decided to embed FF into my blog! - Burcu Dogan
Does this also include individual post embeds (via share)?.. I can't seem to get those to work! - Chris Myles
the building43 stuff is great. they did a good job explaining and such. used it for my lifestream on my blog. - (jeff)isageek

Capybara - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"During the Christian celebration of Lent, capybara meat is especially popular as it is claimed that the Catholic church, in a special dispensation, classified the animal as a fish in the 16th century. There are differing accounts of how the dispensation arose. The most cited refers to a group of 16th Century missionaries who made a request which implied that the semi-aquatic capybara might be a fish and also hinted that there would be an issue with starvation if the animal wasn't classified as suitable for Lent." - Tudor Bosman from Bookmarklet

When thousands of rays are flying under your boat
When thousands of rays are flying under your boat
"It was the end of this June when amateur photographer Sandra Critelli, who was looking for whale sharks, found herself in the right place at the right time to experienced nature at its best. Her boat was surrounded by thousands of rays swimming together like autumn leaves floating in a sunlit pond... gently moved by the wind. The images speak for themselves. The spectacular scene was captured as the magnificent creatures made one of their biannual mass migrations to more agreeable waters as they follow the clockwise current from Mexico's Yucatan peninsula to western Florida in schools of as many as 10,000." - April Buchheit from Bookmarklet
