@erhan if you take c as a vector, then reversed A and B will result in a - C, which then will mean drinks again, but for a different reason I guess :) nice point
- denizoktar
and if you take the absolute value of c (why you drink), it gives you the "amount you drink"
- denizoktar
denizoktar: C is the visibility range of our lives. Save "C" and let's forget "career". :-))
- Erhan Erdoğan
don't be pessimist about the hard drink. it makes all the things eaiser if you really know how to us on time. e.g. drinking a little both at starting and ending of the day will increase your productivity, right?
- Oguz Serdar
We have separated Groups (the new name for "Rooms") into its own section, and we have renamed "filters" to "Saved searches" to make things simpler/clearer. Saved searches have simper URLs that can be shared, and friend list operations have all been added/cleaned up.
- Bret Taylor
Our primary goal was making Groups more useful again. The friend search / group search functionality is now separate and much easier to use.
- Bret Taylor
i like being able to statically set the groups it shows me on the side now.
- rob friedman
Very cool. Much simpler. Any chance of being able to rearrange the blocks a la iGoogle in the future? Saved Searches were mighty convenient up at the top.
- Mark Trapp
Yes, rearranging and theming are both things we would like to do.
- Bret Taylor
@Rob, you still can set the groups that show up by clicking on "prefs" in the orange bar.
- Ana
Where did the create feed/imaginary friend substitute function go?
- Brian Sullivan
@Ana, I just said I liked it. :) I didn't see the ability to change what was shown there prior to this change. It just seemed like a random sampling of the groups I'm on before.
- rob friedman
Excellent. Very glad to see the "Browse/edit friends" link. I look forward to being able to rearrange to put my saved searches at the top.
- Elizabeth
Nice, but I use filters (well, now saved searches) more than I do my friend lists. Personally I prefer it the way it was, although I'd be happy just to have filters bumped up some (I got a _lot_ of lists to scroll past).
- Chris Charabaruk
@Brian, I dont think the imaginary friend stuff is in the beta interface yet, I had to use the old UI to add a few yesterday.
- rob friedman
I like the new separation much more than old layout. Being able to rearrange placement of these blocks would be nice but not essential.
- Boris Gordon
Better, but you really gotta do something about that color scheme.
- mike fabio
Great work! Would be really nice to get the last modified time back next to the title of the groups. That saved me a lot of unnecessary clicks in the non-beta version.
- Christoph Studer
Boris: Not essential, that's true, but extremely useful.
- Chris Charabaruk
rob friendman -- I am talking about the create a feed function that allowed you to create the equivalent of imaginary friends.
- Brian Sullivan
I still think that the "My discussions" link under Friends should really be "My likes and comments", since there are some posts in that feed that are just ones I "liked" and have 0 comments, from me or anyone else. Would you call a post with no comments a "discussion"?
- Nathan Chase
Nathan: you are right, those should probably not be in that feed.
- Bret Taylor
We are still working out imaginary friends functionality. It is on our radar.
- Bret Taylor
Thanks, Bret. You guys -- FF team and product -- are awesome!
- Eric Johnson
Thank you Thank you Thank you! Loving the beta and the FFteam's responsiveness
- Keith - @tsudo
Why is this showing up in my timeline? It says because one of the people I'm subscribed to Liked it. I'm not a member of the room and I'm not subscribed to the original poster (Sorry Bret!) But I swear I've turned off FoaF every day and this keeps happening.
- Paul Reynolds
Its enuf, men, give me more updated info plz.
- kelvin
from IM
We have more consistent terminology now; good. Now can we have more sophisticated feed-composition tools? How about one-touch "create group from saved search"? And how about fixing the "private group - standard FEED - public group" inconsistency?
- Karl Knechtel
I don't think we need full skinning capabilities - just a colour chooser for each coloured element. Also, the prefs link for Groups is a bit ugly. I don't like magically appearing links.
- Karl Knechtel
@patrick: every element of the beta UI should have a beta URL already. Any links that you click in posts are whatever URL is actually specified in the post.
- Karl Knechtel
Bret, this is great news. I'll leave the cosmetics to better people. I like things as is :)
- Deepak Singh
@Paul Reynolds: FoaF can be turned off?
- Karl Knechtel
We just pushed a fix for IE 7/8. If you were using IE, you should refresh. Sorry for the problems.
- Bret Taylor
I love it - especially the filters at the bottom (I use Lists, more often). That said, I like Kishore's suggestion -> let us choose the ordering of the boxes.
- Ahsan Ali
Very good improvement, but would like to have another box of favorite friends. I wouldn't mind if I could set this up like the groups box, or if it would just remember who I clicked on the most.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Simpler... When is the mobile version coming out?
- Brian Kenyon
I would really appreciate if we could drag and drop items and boxes. I want to order all this.
- stanjourdan
While the new sidebar order is good, I'm having fun getting rid of two saved searches which only bring up an "edit new filter/search page. It'd be nice to have some way to edit/delete searches, like with the groups and friends boxes. Still waiting for someone to give me a tip on how to remove those two links from the list otherwise.
- George Hall (Australia)
George: Click the "Saved Searches" title, then select the feed from the left-hand side, then click Delete.
- Karl Knechtel
like it! only thing i don't like is that i have to scroll down everytime i wanna see my saves searches now...
- Peter Efland
Peter, yep to me that's in completely the wrong place. It's the second most important new feature on FF (behind real-time) and it's now "hidden" at the bottom. I have a large list of Groups and means big scroll down to the Saved Searches, which I use a LOT. Please either return them back to the second tab down or give us the option to select what sidebars we have and what order they appear on the bar?
- Kol Tregaskes
Bret, this is great, especially being able to see all of my groups. But I agree with just about everyone else, I'd prefer to have my saved searches above groups. There is still enough room to add subscriptions as well . . . maybe??
- Chris Loft
I like it, although the name filter was better, I think. Besides putting the Searches under Friends, it would be good if the Groups would change order in relation to recent activity, like it used to be.
- Alejandro
I like the way things are separated, now. However, I too have a lot of lists to scroll past to get to groups and saved searches. It would be nice to move the saved searches and groups above the lists. Definitely loving the beta, though!
- Seth Greenblatt
A number of feeds I set up are showing as Groups. Is that right? I set up a number of Twitter feeds (e.g. "Twitter - Al Yankovic") for nonFF Tweeters. It's a little confusing since now they're listed as a Group when their settings are "Standard Feed".
- caj needs a haircut
separate groups section is good. now about labelling content sources rather than people... (would be nice to have this at least as an option: show user avatar OR show content source - then those of us who read by content are happy, and those who read by user are happy)
- Richard Akerman
Alejandro, I first thought I'd miss "filter" but actually prefer "saved searches" now. Well because they are, aren't they? Makes things easier to understand. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I use filters a lot and now on the HP Mini I have to scroll down the window to get to the next filter I want to check which then scrolls the page back up to the top after picking it. I have nine filters that I check probably once an hour. The page scrolling is tedious to go through. Is there a way you could move Filters up above Groups either manually or automatically based on most common use?
- Loren Heiny
Thank you! Navigating to groups/rooms was a pain.
- amygeek
Nice Job, I like it. It feels simpler and will be welcoming to new users.
- Poor Gamer
I also don't care for the name change at the top of the "Search results." The name of the search was better at least for how I use it. I can see the actual search criteria in the seach box. I don't need it in both places. Plus, when I'm clicking through a list of saved searches one at a time I often forget where I am in the list. The title helped me keep track.
- Loren Heiny
"Atom feeds" are not a "small missing components"!!! :) .. as on abay +++++AAAA+++AAAA for beta.FriendFeed
- CantorJF
Just noticed the new groups sidebar. Thank you!
- Carmen wBabby
Seems like the green box should be titled "Friend Lists" (in an actual Friends list, I'd expect to see Joe, Mary, Bob, etc. -- right now, there's a pretty big disconnect btw typical user expectations and what's appearing in that box). And maybe the browse/edit should then be titled "Browse/edit friend lists".
- Christopher Galtenberg
Even more unexpected is that when I click on Friends, I also see Groups. There should probably be another split, so we have Lists, Friends, and Groups. Bret, you guys are going to run out of colors soon! :)
- Daniel Sims
And would you *please* give us custom backgrounds and colors?
- Gaby K. Slezák
Karl: tried it, but it only brings up a new filter again. If one could edit one's "saved searches list by the NAME of the filter, it'd be easy to delete it. But your suggestion didn't bring up anything that could help me get rid of the two empty filters. Neither has a delete button.
- George Hall (Australia)
Karl:don't know whether my desktop wasn't showing the left-side bar, but late last night, I was looking at a list of my saved searches with the delete button active for all things in the list. Finally got rid of those two items that were only bringing up a search/filter page. That left-side bar with all listed searches is an elegant solution.
- George Hall (Australia)
Dont like it. No longer can get Twit Conversations to show up in Groups.. only in Home even if I add it to Groups!
- Greg
Rochelle: if someone sends you a direct message (http://beta.friendfeed.com/filter...) or replies to a direct message you send, you will get an email, and you can reply by email as well.
- Bret Taylor
Awesome! now we can also do it by SMS right? (not IM)
- Alfredo 亜瑠布れっど
Bret, how do you get to that URL if it's not typed in directly? Where is the account setting?
- Rochelle
I was wondering what happens when I send a DM to someone who doesn't use beta. I guess after today they will get an email?
- Laura Norvig
Rochelle: at the bottom of every email that you get, there is a link - "Unsubscribe from FriendFeed mail" - that takes you to the link that Bret posted.
- Tudor Bosman
Tudor, there should be a link in the settings to change that. You shouldn't have to get an email to get a link to it.
- Rochelle
seems to work well. jut tested it out with someone
- Cee Bee
Rochelle, there will be, once we convert the settings page to the new UI, possibly before that.
- Tudor Bosman
Rochelle: the email settings are also at https://friendfeed.com/account..., but the Beta is catching up with the account settings UI still. It will be in there imminently, just rolling things out progressively.
- Bret Taylor
Okay, excellent. Thanks for the update!
- Rochelle
If an entry is sent directly to you and as well as other feeds will it come via email? This can be a little ambiguous in my opinion with the potential for people to respond to direct messages that aren't private. I think its a great step though!
- Frankie Warren
Why can't Twitter do this? Oh, yeah, their engineers suck.
- Robert Scoble
Cool... Now my mailbox will seem more full ;)
- Bindu Reddy
How did the DM feature work before this? There were no emails sent when someone DMed you?
- Bindu Reddy
Bindu: this is correct. DMs would only show up in your feed (and in the "Direct messages" filter).
- Tudor Bosman
On the DM feed, does a >> icon indicate privacy or just the fact that it is a DM ?
- Ahsan Ali
>> indicates that it is a DM. All DMs are private (unless cross-posted to a public feed, or to public rooms).
- Tudor Bosman
I posted a DM to a room ... that's the same as doing a post really, isn't it? I think it disappeared from my DM list.
- Laura Norvig
Yes, a "DM" to a room is the same as a post. Rather, the other way around: if you "post" to another user, we call that a DM.
- Tudor Bosman
What!! than it was not really a DM till now...;) Good work. Did our chat at B&B inspire any of this or was this in the works already?
- Bindu Reddy
Bindu: we've had this (and "a handful of direct message and email enhancements") working internally in some form or another for about 2 weeks.
- Tudor Bosman
@Tudor I see, so the >> indicates DMness, but not necessarily privacy. Do you think we need a privacy icon - like the one we have for private Feeds (rooms) ?
- Ahsan Ali
Got it. Congrats! Good stuff. Though I am not totally sure about sending emails on the comments. It makes total sense for the 1st DM message
- Bindu Reddy
Ahsan: Let's say that you receive a message from me. You can look at the list of recipients. If it says "Tudor Bosman to you", it's private. If it says "to you, Tudor's feed, and FriendFeed Feedback", it's not (it's crossposted to my (public) feed and to the (public) FriendFeed Feedback room).
- Tudor Bosman
Tudor: i guess it's similar to checking if people were cc'd on an email... but at the same time i think the potential to mess up is higher. especially since the feed paradigm takes some getting used to in the first place.
- Frankie Warren
Mark: not right now. (The message isn't formatted in a way suitable for 140 characters...)
- Tudor Bosman
Frankie: agreed. We may change the way locks and ">>" are displayed to reduce some of the confusion.
- Tudor Bosman
Mark: SMS is not email. Twitter's DM sucks compared to friendfeed.
- Robert Scoble
Excellent - I depend on email notifications for DMs from Twitter. Great to see it here.
- Hutch Carpenter
Why Facebook can't get this right is beyond me. Thank you for resisting the urges of noreply and donotreply email addresses :)
- Jay Cuthrell
Thanks for all the love! If you notice any bugs (especially related to replying by email -- missing, incomplete, or incorrectly formatted comments) please let us know by forwarding a few affected messages (including full headers, if possible) to feedback@friendfeed.com. Thanks!
- Tudor Bosman
Really good feature for email api, now it's true usable. Thank you.
- Альянс-кульман
from fftogo
OK... so the structure of the email address is 'ignore.<username>@friendfeed.com'. Does this mean in the future I will be able to DM someone by emailing something like 'message.<username>@friendfeed.com'?
- Johnny
Thank you! Any plans to add it to the FF Notification tool?
- Josh Haley
Bret, thanks! And Mark, as a workaround re: wanting to get DMs via SMS, it's pretty easy to set a forwarding filter on one's e-mail to [number]@tmomail.net or whatever your carrier's SMS gateway is. Okay, that's minorly geeky, but IMHO not much of a hurdle at all :)
- Adam Lasnik
You can configure multiple email addresses on your account page (http://friendfeed.com/account/); for now, we'll send mail to the one you designate as "primary". You can set [number]@tmomail.net as the primary address and we'll happily send mail to it, which should be delivered as SMS; however, the email messages that we sent won't be properly formatted or clipped to 140 characters, so they may look ugly or get split over multiple SMS messages (and so you may get charged more if you pay per use).
- Tudor Bosman
This feature really rocks. I'm glad it's built into the system here instead of having to be provided by a 3rd party as is is on twitter.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Great news. I admire your profession on e-mails.
- Alp
+1 that the lock and >> icons need a bunch of work (rethought?). The emailing is a very nice thing to have, though. But could we also possibly turn it off please? :)
- Karl Knechtel
Once FriendFeed is done polishing the beta version a bit more, the plan is to work on an updated mobile version, Buchheit tells me in acknowledging the battery issue. Notably, he also says that the company’s finally considering a native app for the iPhone that could take advantage of the new Push Notification feature coming in the iPhone 3.0...
@K.D. 默认FOAF(Friend of a Friend)是开启的,所以订阅你的人就能看到你Like或Comment过的条目。如果关了FOAF或者Hide设置了就看不到了。你刚才的我看到就是这个“itsxhu (K.D. liked this) ”,类似的“David Cook (Benjamin Golub and Paul Buchheit liked this) ”、“Gabor Cselle (Paul Buchheit commented on this) ”,都是通过FOAF传播过来的。Beta版这次有个小更新,以前如果有多个朋友Like或Comment了一条目,括号里Username liked/commented on this(如果Like和Comment都有,则优先显示Comment)只有1个朋友的名字,Beta现在可以显示2个朋友的名字,比如“David Cook (Benjamin Golub and Paul Buchheit liked this)”
- Marc Dong
I'm really happy with the increase in activity since releasing http://beta.friendfeed.com/ on Monday. The conversations have always been my favorite part of FriendFeed, and the new ui makes them even better.
had the opposite initial impact than I imagined, perhaps the speed is what facilitates a lot more interaction to engage follow-up
- Lou Paglia
I agree, Paul. I've found myself engaging in conversations more since the Beta release.
- Alejandro
Paul, there is option in old FF to import Twitter contacts & lots other options in 'Find & Invite', i dont see them in New FF. Have you removed them?
- Roshan Ramachandran
Roshan: we will be adding them to the beta.
- Benjamin Golub
Curious.. is this graph conversations per active user or total number of conversations?
- Bindu Reddy
FWIW, I have commented and liked more things in the last couple of days than before.. it was really distracting the 1st day but since than my feed has slowed down considerably
- Bindu Reddy
Hoping for more buzz so it keeps comin'! Great to see so many familiar names posting again
- Charlie Anzman
The new Friendfeed is pretty good. Congrats!
- fbrunel
The new FF is cool. Filters are my favorite!
- netvista
not actually, users just are testing this new interface before they are tired of it. keep watching. Would you like to release it again half of month later?
- Aether
WOW look at that graph!! That is some serious FF lovin' traffic - wooo hoooo!!!! Congrats! The beta is a hit!!! I love it, keep up the great work guys!!! :)
- Susan Beebe
Maybe what we see are the discussions of new Beta Friendfeed? :)
- Alex Kapranoff
@kkapp Sure, this is just a buzz about FriendFeed Beta
- romanzolotarev
The key here is the "rising" slope of the *Replies* graph after the BETA launch. While the overall offset could be due to many reasons like old users logging back in to try the beta, launch hype, Scoble etc, the flat slope of the "likes" chart and the rising slope of the "replies" chart tells me we will continue to see increased *engagement* even when the excitement has worn off.
- vijay
Could this also be interpreted to mean the new interface makes us talk more to get the same point across, i.e. behave more like we're in a chat room, exchanging "hello's" and "bye's"? The giant Gillmor Gang thread on Monday was the first time on Friendfeed I felt like saying "bye" before "leaving" the room!
- Philipp Lenssen
not for me philipp, for someone w/ limited time to check in on ff i find i'm missing conversations more w/ the beta so not engaging as much - not ff's fault more an issue of my personal use case though...
- mike "glemak" dunn
mike, doesn't "best of day" still work the same? That's how I'm catching this conversation.
- Bruce Lewis
sure bruce that gives a good view of most popular or active conversations but the beauty of expanding lists is you can organize based on themes so the list proper give you recent and active and then when expanded you can drill down through individuals who may be less active - those are the conversations I feel I'm missing
- mike "glemak" dunn
FF needs some way to communicate 'comments' other than color, because the grey (?) color denoting second tier comments is too hard to read. Don't fight your colorblind users. The mere position of second-tier comments is enough to indicate that they are comments without blending them into the background by making the font color low-contrast with the white background. Put three American guys in a room and there is a 23% chance that one of them is going to not be able to read FF because of poor font color.
- A Mitchell
yes, definite improvements - keep up the GREAT work!!!
- Walter Yu
Paul: Do you have that same chart with a line for the number of entries created?
- Ken Sheppardson
I've noticed the increase in comments to recent posts, but I still get little or no response to comments I make to content that is even just a few days old. Are there email notifications when a thread becomes re-active or is it now all about bumping threads back to the top of the content owners stream?
- karl dotter
