Natchitoches Times > News > Historic District applications deal mostly with signage - http://natchitochestimes.com/article...
"The new business section of the agenda included multiple signage applications. The commission approved a sign for Colbert Law Firm, LLC on Fourth Street, for Platinum Chic on St. Denis and for Sabine State Bank on Front Street. The bank had previously applied for temporary signage, and the commission's approval made it permanent. The Historic District Commission also approved the bank's application for a new ATM machine and security lighting. Natchitoches resident and candidate for U.S. Senate Bob Lang applied to put up a 3 feet by 6 feet sign on the corner of St. Clair and Williams Avenue. "We've never allowed something that big," Horton said, referring to the sign Lang brought to the meeting. Only 2 by 2 signs are allowed in the historic district, and the commission made no action on Lang's application because he agreed to place only the smaller signs within district." - Jeff Guin from Bookmarklet

Foundation to present heritage awards - http://natchitochestimes.com/article...
"The Natchitoches Historic Foundation will present its annual heritage awards this Sunday during its Fall Gala. One of the projects it will recognize is a beautiful example of what can happen when a community comes together around a preservation project. For decades, the Breda Town's cemetery has been central to the history of the community. But in recent years, lack of funds and manpower led to a deteriorated state in the cemetery. Gravemarkers were being lost to vandalism, lack of funds and the elements. This is changing now. Thanks to strong leadership and partnerships, the cemetery is coming back and inspiring the revitalization of the Breda Town community. Chris Paige is president of the Breda Town Cemetery Committee. He follows in the footsteps of his father, who was president many years ago. Paige, along with past president John Below have worked with a dedicated group of board members to make the cemetery once again a source of community pride. * One way they've accomplished... more... - Jeff Guin from Bookmarklet

Statue of black man has history of controversy - http://www.lsureveille.com/news...
Statue of black man has history of controversy
"In 83 years, both whites and blacks have rejected it. It has been protested against, relocated and vandalized. It has also transformed from an artistic pariah into one of the most important relics of Louisiana history. The first statue of a black man in America, known as Uncle Jack, has welcomed visitors to the LSU Rural Life Museum since 1974 and has drawn national attention since it was first erected. The statue was ranked No. 46 in a list of the “100 Most Notorious National Monuments” in the 1999 book “Lies Across America.” Since 1999, the Rural Life Museum has changed the layout of its facilities, making the statue a central exhibit. But the museum plans to move the sculpture 60 feet from its current location within a few months. The move will take Uncle Jack from the center of an inaccessible car path into the main complex of buildings." - Jeff Guin from Bookmarklet

Museum's charred remains prompts study of ruins - http://www.natchitochestimes.com/article...
"What good could come out of a burned-out husk of a building? Could a museum's ruins contribute to a culture the same way it did when it was still intact? Few would dispute the significance of ruins found in most of the world's ancient settlements. But easy answers are harder to come by in modern America when a structure is destroyed at merely 200 years old, in a rural location, during a bad economy. Heritage Resources students at NSU took on this challenge during their Heritage Resources Methods II class. Their topic was the Kate Chopin House, which burned nearly a year ago in Cloutierville. The students were charged with the mission to "use skills and knowledge gained in class to help visitors value the importance of this place." The mission was a challenging one. Very little remained to identify the structure as the elegant showcase of Creole-style architecture it once was. Course instructors Julie Ernstein, Susan Dollar and Pete Gregory encouraged the students to find creative... more... - Jeff Guin from Bookmarklet

NSU librarian Fleming Thomas remembered with books and beasts - http://www.natchitochestimes.com/article...
"Books and beasts is how Jean D'Amato Thomas describes the memorials established to honor her late husband, Fleming Thomas. The words describe two of his passions in life. "Fleming loved books and pushed for all he could so that the book budget for the library be maintained," D'Amato Thomas said. "The most fitting tribute I could think of was a book fund." Together with NSU Acting Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs Dr. Lisa Abney, she established the Fleming Arden Thomas Library Book Fund through the NSU Foundation. D'Amato Thomas said books purchased through the fund will be appropriate for the academic interests of the NSU community. Memorial donations can also be made to the Natchitoches Animal Shelter. The Thomas' two dogs were former shelter pets. The Fleming Thomas Lecture Series will also serve to keep Thomas legacy alive. The series will bring local and regional faculty to NSU to discuss their research" - Jeff Guin from Bookmarklet

Natchitoches Times > News > State proceeding with museum design - http://www.natchitochestimes.com/article...
"The first phase of state construction contracts is the schematic. Second is design development and third is contract document. That includes final design, structural, HV/AC plans, mechanical and similar construction details. The fourth phase authorizes preparation of the bid document. Sharon Gahagan, chairman of the Historic District Commission, said Trahan was in Natchitoches in November with an unacceptable rectangle design. It was commonly referred to an "amoeba." Trahan returned June 10 and was told by Historic District commissioners that the rectangular design was still unacceptable because of the harsh angles. Also of concern is the 200-foot long wall side along Lafayette Street that has no windows or breaks in the design. Trahan said Monday, "We feel we need to find a creative way to deal with that long wall." To date, Trahan has not submitted a design plan of any kind to the Natchitoches Historic District Commission.
