Yeah their transcriptions are atrocious
- LANjackal
I've found them to be just awful or spot-on. Then again, I've seen the same with Gmail's spam filter. Some accounts are terrific at blocking spam and others are pretty bad.

It's fascinating what comes out of statistical learning when something goes wrong. I just got a transcription that said "Hi. See you later." The audio was just a couple of clicks. But those phrases make sense statistically, if you assume the caller must have said *something*. The good news is that it will most likely get a *lot* better over time, as more training data becomes available.

Someone forgot the "!" before the isStopWord(...)
- Manas Tungare
Joel: sounds like a pretty accurate translation to me.

Don't forget to donate bad voicemail transcriptions: http://googlevoiceblog.blogspot.com/2009... Given that Google Voice respects your privacy, providing voicemails as training data has to be an opt-in decision.

There are 10^11 stars in the galaxy. That used to be a huge number. But it's only a hundred billion. It's less than the national deficit! We used to call them astronomical numbers. Now we should call them economical numbers. - Richard Feynman - http://origin.reddit.com/comment...
When I was a kid I got an "insiders" tour of NASA, so lucky but I only remember a couple of things.

One of the highlights of my time I spent in Florida was having the opportunity to view a night launch of the Shuttle. What an amazing sight. Wish I had a decent camera back then!
- Jeremy Hall
I'll be sad when the Shuttle flies its final mission. Watching these guys repair stuff in orbit serves to remind me once in a while that mankind can still do amazing feats of engineering and we're not all couch potatoes. My son will be ~5-6 when the final mission happens, I'm hoping I can attend the launch with him as I think it will leave an unforgettable impression. We once landed on the moon, and flew people into space, maybe we'll continue to do so through China and India, who knows.

Of course, others object to the expense and favor spending money on nothing but robot missions. I'm all for robots too, but nothing captures the imagination more than building vehicles that can fly actual people there.
