Thomas, If you use DNG files, all metadata (including keywords) and LR edits would be saved within the file itself so they can live separately from the LR database or any XMPs. You can use the Adobe DNG convertor to convert. One other side-benefit is that DNG files use less space than the RAW files. Given that LR2 uses a brand new version of the DNG spec, not sure how readable that would be by other apps, but my understanding is that it downgrades cleanly so all info would be available except for the new "functions" like LR2's localized adjustments. Here's a video to confirm: http://www.workshopsondemand.c... - Jigar Champaneria
On your blog the first comment answers how to fix this going forward in the "catalog settings" to write the metadata immediately. In general, before moving RAW files I select all files in grid mode and save (cmd/ctrl-s) which updates all metadata. To find your files, if you still have the import folder in LR, then you can right click the folder and choose "Update Folder Location" - Jeremy Hall
I have also started right clicking the folder and exporting that folder as its own LR catalog to store with the raw files. I don't plan on ever using LR for searching files as having the meta data makes it searchable via OS based or other programs, but this keeps my edits available to reopen down the road in a small, portable file. - Jeremy Hall
DNG seems like an unnecessary added step. I'd prefer to work with my RAW files and then export to JPG from there. I'll check out the "catalog settings" feature, thanks Jeremy. - Thomas Hawk
@Jeremy: That first comment certainly is correct, but requires managing separate files. If Thomas was looking for the metadata to be embedded in the photo file itself, the only way to do that currently is by converting to DNG since the DNG format allows to embedding of that sort of stuff. Thomas, is that indeed what you were looking to do? Single file to capture everything about that photo? - Jigar Champaneria
Thomas, looks like some good solutions were presented. On a side note, I convert all my RAWs to DNG upon import into LR just as a matter of normal practice, so that it's not any extra step. Doesn't seem to add much time and, at least for me, I feel a little more secure knowing that I don't have to worry about changes in the myriad proprietary RAW formats. - Bob M. Montgomery via twhirl
thanks everyone - getting my copy of Lightroom delivered today, so this is timely information! BTW, can anyone recommend a good lightroom/workflow FF room? - Bill Sanders
The answer is in catalog settings. Also, whenever I move photos from one machine to another I use the "export/import as catalog" option - this way you preserve not just keywords, but develop settings history and collections as well. Though if you export to TIFF or JPG it should automatically write the metadata to the new files too. - Eric
And personally I *hate* DNG - it makes differential backups damn near impossible. I like storing the settings in the tiny little .xmp sidecars - that way that's the only thing I send to my offsite backup every night, and I only have to back up the bulky 10+ mb raw files once. - Eric
@Eric, Hmm great point...I don't do DNG, but I was almost ready to start converting. That would be a real pain and my nightly backups would take forever! - Jigar Champaneria
I started using DNG when I moved to LR. It's simple as pie to convert when importing, and it frees me from worrying about keeping track of or accidentally deleting extra files (sidecars). I like having all my data embedded in one single file. Much cleaner and simpler. - Matt
I'm with Bob on DNG right now - love it. I may have to try the diff backup thing though - good point there. Although, I usually don't edit files over and over, so a file gets backed up only once or twice. Perhaps DNG will gain the option for external .xmp sidecars? - Kevin Williams
As cheap as drives are now, I don't worry about the backup size issue. I do incremental every night, and it hasn't ever been an issue in years. - Bob M. Montgomery via twhirl
@Jigar I actually use the DNG as well, but I wanted to keep the advice separate from that as not everyone likes the DNG approach. I convert to DNG at the time of import in fact and use that going forward. As for backups I don't find I am making that many incremental changes that it is a transfer issue as Eric stated. - Jeremy Hall
I should clarify - I use an offsite backup that I connect to over a VPN (in addition to a local backup). It's not a size issue, it's a speed issue - I simply don't have a fast upstream connection (FU, Comcast) - so given the choice of adding a tag to 100 files and then uploading 100 DNG files or 100 xmp sidecars to my backup site, I'll choose the latter. - Eric
Actually, back to the keyword issue, the suggestion on your site, Thomas, about Write Keywords as Lightroom Hierarchy is a good one. I just noticed, exporting images from LR2 for Photrade that with that option unchecked, it doesn't include all the keywords on export; however, checking that option resulted in full keywords in the JPG file. Just a quick tip. - Bob M. Montgomery

Soda...or Coke...or Diet Soda or Diet Coke...of course that only covers the "Coke-like" drinks...if you want orange soda or Dr. Pepper, etc. you have to specify. You can't use pop or soda when referring to a non-cola drink. IE you can't say "I'm drinking a pop" when you are drinking a Mr. Pibb. - Alex "Maverick" Scoble

Andrew, you're not missing anything. There's nothing to get. A bunch of silly nonsensicle halabaloo. Microsoft continues to be completely out of touch with, everything. Ad campaign FAIL! - John Reynolds via twhirl

I thought it was funny, too. Effective as far as selling or promoting anything, probably not, but I liked it as a standalone bit. - abacab
Well, that felt uninspired. Amusing, though, but not the right way. - W. Thomas Leroux
Other than The Office, Seinfeld is still funnier than most TV today. This commercial could have been good if it had a point. BTW, I saw it during the Giants game, and it still seemed very long. - Chris White
I love that's his jail mugshot on the clown card - joly
I dunno. it was fun to watch. I'm not one who can be convinced by anything MS does to switch back so I guess I can just watch and enjoy Seinfeld do his thing. - Capn' "One-Eye" Longman ☠
Um. No. Gates IS NOT to Microsoft as Jobs is to Apple. Seinfeld draws painful attention to that fact. - rzklkng
The company with the best comedians wins? - Jemm
I guess the point is that Microsoft wants to remind general public of themselves and that they can be sort of funny, too ;) Or maybe the idea comes clear after few ads. - Jemm
But was it really funny? I think *most* people think it wasnt funny. And it has only two stars on YouTube. I complied a list of headlines here: http://dembot.com/post/4888143... - Andrew Baron
it has a "we're one of you, really.. ignore our fortunes, we're *just* *like* *you*" angle to it. I half expected them to have resurrected Al Bundy for the store. I found the windows 1.0 ad with steve ballmer to be funnier! - alphaxion
Oh dear. 3/10. Must try harder Microsoft. And the out-of-sync audio doesn't reflect that well on your brand. - Mike Coulter
No... not this way. Could be just waste of money but after moment of thinking... it's actually working nicely. While it gets negative attention, that is still good for overall ad campaign since it gets people speaking of it. And more time people spend of talking, more closely they remember it. - Daniel Schildt
@Daniel, since when was it out of fashion or too expensive to get people talking about something good? Putting out crap and expecting people to talk about it because its crap is not a very clever option. I cant imagine that they planned to it that way. - Andrew Baron
I don't think the ad is awful and if it came without the microsoft vs apple cultural baggage or the weight of expectations following microsoft's declaration that they were about to unleash the mother of all campaigns on the world I think reaction might have been more positive. I think Loren Feldman has it right - Microsoft don't need to look cool, their stuff just has to work well for the masses. - jeremy ettinghausen
