"Yes, but most instructors forgot, or were never shown that there is something in the katas. Of all the times I asked no one was ever able to explain the purpose of moves in pinan forms, or gave me a completely ridiculous explanation.. Also, most higher grade karate students I've talked to (that have really good understanding of techniques otherwise, AND most of them cross train) consider katas to be this arcane dance that has no value in modern combative martial arts.
