Cambridge University Library holds the largest and most important collection of the scientific works of Isaac Newton (1642-1727). We present here an initial selection of Newton's manuscripts, concentrating on his mathematical work in the 1660s. Over the next few months we will be adding further works until the majority of our Newton Papers are available on this site. - Bruno C. Vellutini

How Swedes and Norwegians broke the power of the ‘1 percent’ / Waging Nonviolence - People-Powered News and Analysis - http://wagingnonviolence.org/2012...
While many of us are working to ensure that the Occupy movement will have a lasting impact, it’s worthwhile to consider other countries where masses of people succeeded in nonviolently bringing about a high degree of democracy and economic justice. Sweden and Norway, for example, both experienced a major power shift in the 1930s after prolonged nonviolent struggle. They “fired” the top 1 percent of people who set the direction for society and created the basis for something different. - Bruno C. Vellutini

- Bruno C. Scientists Embrace Openness - Science Careers - Biotech, Pharmaceutical, Faculty, Postdoc jobs on Science Careers - http://sciencecareers.sciencemag.org/career_...
History is replete with stories of scientists who hid their ideas from their competition; consider Leonardo da Vinci, whose odd backward writing may have been partly motivated by fear of thieves, or Isaac Newton, who concealed one idea by writing it in the form of an anagram. Science has long been a dog-eat-dog world. - Bruno C. Vellutini

Privacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age. Privacy is not secrecy. A private matter is something one doesn't want the whole world to know, but a secret matter is something one doesn't want anybody to know. Privacy is the power to selectively reveal oneself to the world. - Bruno C. Vellutini

Radio Free Meredith - A Biopunk Manifesto - http://maradydd.livejournal.com/496085...
Scientific literacy is necessary for a functioning society in the modern age. Scientific literacy is not science education. A person educated in science can understand science; a scientifically literate person can *do* science. Scientific literacy empowers everyone who possesses it to be active contributors to their own health care, the quality of their food, water, and air, their very interactions with their own bodies and the complex world around them. - Bruno C. The Embryo Project Encyclopedia - http://embryo.asu.edu/
The Embryo Project helps identify and understand the agents of change shaping embryo research and its multiple contexts. We started from the historical recognition that science involves a mix of contingencies influenced by (1) particular actors working in particular places, (2) decisions about what organisms to study, equipment to use, experiments to design, and other technical factors that make possible scientific practices, and (3) the multiple social and cultural contextual factors that shape what is possible in science.
- Bruno C. Vellutini
@nelas is there any chance that http://cifonauta.cebimar.usp.br/terms... would drop the NC clause? These images and videos are an awesome resource but their potential for reuse is severely limited by the NC restriction - for instance, it bars reuse on Wikimedia projects. - Daniel Mietchen
Yes! Nc was chosen mostly because it is the "standard" institution's license. At the time it was a much smaller project and we decided to release everything under the same license. We did considered by-sa, but also felt that more ppl would contribute with material if nc was the default. - Bruno C. Vellutini
So, I have some ideas on how to integrate with wikipedia. First thing is to allow per-image license options, so authors can choose a different one and also mark if images can be propagated to third-parties databases. For each external database there would be requirements, for instance, Wikipedia would require non-nc license and images would be supplied without a watermark. Programatic... more... - Bruno C. It could be a long thread, if you prefer my email is organelas at gmail dot com - Bruno C. Vellutini
Do you have a possibility to contact all or most of those who have deposited images so far, and to ask them whether they would be comfortable to switch? In principle, these images could also be considered data, for which the Panton Principles recommend CC0, but BY-SA is probably "good enough" for the time being. In case you need some arguments for dropping the NC clause, I will send you the draft of a paper on just that topic - preprint is not out yet. - Daniel Mietchen
Sure, at this beta stage we have only a few authors. But I need discuss the matter thoroughly with the coordinator to define the guidelines before we start accepting submissions. And thanks for the manuscript, it perfectly matches the situation. I'll update myself on the nc debate, arguments will be important. - Bruno C. Vellutini
Hey! Just read it, quite nice. The distinction between "commercial" and "for-profit" was very clarifying specially for the implications of using NC. For our project I think the first compelling argument is that a majority of our images come from publicly funded research (ie, data). Also, our NC interpretation fits the more liberal sense you cited in the text and we do encourage reuse,... more... - Bruno C. Vellutini
Yes, share-alike does not fit well with cross-media conversions like digital to print, but many books have been printed on the basis of materials from Wikimedia projects, so that seems to be OK. Not sure about the exact legal routes that make this possible. - Daniel Mietchen
