Try rolling the cat through a press first. Flat cats fit into the fax easier. - Bob Blunk
Fax, Petr. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
even a flat cat... faxes just can't handle the hair. You'd have to shave the cat first, else the hair will burn and stick to the drum... a mess! (I am extrapolating from transparencies, mind, i don't have access to a cat to test) - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Hehe, Joelle. This is now tied for the 'likes' top stop. One more then, hehe. :-) - Kol Tregaskes

FBI Investigated Coder for Liberating Paywalled Court Records | Threat Level | Wired.com
"When 22-year-old programmer Aaron Swartz decided last fall to help an open-government activist amass a public and free copy of millions of federal court records, he did not expect he’d end up with an FBI agent trying to stake out his house. But that’s what happened, as Swartz found out this week when he got his FBI file through a Freedom of Information Act request. A partially-redacted FBI report shows the feds mounted a serious investigation of Swartz for helping put public documents onto the public web ." - Jason Huebel from Bookmarklet

The Semantic Web: Impossible In Theory, Impractical in Reality - http://bexhuff.com/2009...
" . . . the vision and current practice of the semantic web does not evolve around making machines think, but rather on letting machines make the connections between apparently disparate data sources. It's about letting computers do what they're best at - processing large quantities of data fast. Which is something that we humans will never do as good as computers. So instead of us... more... - Igor Goldkind
and 2: "The "semantic web" isn't about making computers actually understand data, it's about making it easier for computers to sort through and categorize data. It's about tagging data according to what they represent rather than (or in addition to) how they should be displayed. And the point isn't to evolve the WWW into some giant, self-aware, artificially intelligent consciousness,... more... - Igor Goldkind
So you're abandoning the links between AI and Semantic Web? - Cliff Gerrish
These are merely the most articulate refutation of the argument. The key to the AI argument is whether or not you define intelligence exclusively as a human attribute (in which case you preclude all possible innovation by definition) or rather a kind of behaviour that is exhibited by humans but can also be exhibited by animals and possibly machines. The Turing test is applicable here. - Igor Goldkind
Right, once you define 'intelligence' as thing machines do, artificial intelligence can simply be called 'intelligence.' - Cliff Gerrish
Do dogs possess intelligence? - Igor Goldkind
Are you trying to make the argument that the MIT AI lab's goal is replicating the intelligence of a dog? - Cliff Gerrish
So if dogs are intelligent doesn't that usurp the human character? - Igor Goldkind
No, but it may mean that you can call the 'semantic' web intelligent. - Cliff Gerrish
Dogs are commonly described as being intelligent creatures or possessing intelligence. Pigmy chimpanzees come closest to demonstrating human-like intelligence, but there are still significant differences. Just as there is or will shortly be significant differences between the intelligence displayed by machines and that displayed by people. - Igor Goldkind
Exactly. The semweb is an intelligent dog. - Cliff Gerrish
Ah, it's that rule by gibberish thing again. - Igor Goldkind
What do you mean when you say 'gibberish?' - Cliff Gerrish
Unintelligible irrelevance. What you have to sift through to get to the intelligible - Igor Goldkind
And explain how this 'gibberish' can provide a set of rules.... - Cliff Gerrish
The gibberish doesn't; the signals create structure. The noise is what you filter out. - Igor Goldkind
And how do you tell the difference between signal and noise, and make this decision for everyone? - Cliff Gerrish
You can't tell the difference between the signal and the noise? Actually that makes sense if you think everything to do with the semantic web is snake oil. - Igor Goldkind
No, just the big vision of the "semantic" web qualifies as snake oil. There are lots of bits and pieces that are quite interesting. - Cliff Gerrish
You've mistaken your own great vision for what is actually being progressed. The aims of semantic are completely tenable and in keeping with the ethos of linked data and information tranparency. You've concocted a paranoia about information control based on meta data mark up. - Igor Goldkind
No, I just see a naive vision being sold by the academic semwebers. They're leading the technology on a wild goose chase. - Cliff Gerrish
No, the technology is leading them. The SemWeb just offers a better, more common sense architecture; which why it's being so widely adopted. - Igor Goldkind
Are you saying that RDF is a "common sense" architecture? - Cliff Gerrish
Semantic mark up is largely common sense: 'A language is a system for encoding and decoding information. In its most common use, the term refers to so-called "natural languages" — the forms of communication considered peculiar to humankind. In linguistics the term is extended to refer to the human cognitive facility of creating and using language. Essential to both meanings is the... more... - Igor Goldkind
Languages are codec systems, but not always for 'information.' - Cliff Gerrish
What we're discussing is information architecture - Igor Goldkind
Information architecture is a web 1.0 practice. It needs to be completely rethought. - Cliff Gerrish
Which was precisely the initiative behind SemWeb - Igor Goldkind
No, semweb is about data architecture. Certainly, not about meaning, and barely about information. - Cliff Gerrish
Semantic development is about enhancing web publishing data and is very much about information as well as enriching that information with greater meaning. - Igor Goldkind
No, you're on the wrong track with this 'greater meaning' meme -- that's where you begin to slip on the snake oil. - Cliff Gerrish
Enhanced data is not more meaningful? Maybe not like a poem's meaning. - Igor Goldkind
No, it's less meaningful. It's drained of human meaning and reduced to a level of simplicity that a machine can process. - Cliff Gerrish
Making something machine readable does not inherently deminish its meaning; if anything it expands the scope of its comprehension. - Igor Goldkind
No, it must by definition remove meaning and assign a specific value to the variable. - Cliff Gerrish
You can have more than one value assigned to a variable; 'mercury' can be marked up as an element, a planet and a Roman diety. - Igor Goldkind
Can it be both at the same time? - Cliff Gerrish
It is the same word but different meanings depending on context and yes within a both/and ontology it can be both the element and the gods the element was named after. - Igor Goldkind
Can it be 'both/and' and 'either/or?' - Cliff Gerrish
Yes if the that's the way the ontology decribes it. - Igor Goldkind
In the same "ontology?" - Cliff Gerrish
Depends on the definitions within the ontology - Igor Goldkind

The swirl that shook gaming: the Sega Dreamcast turns 10
Officially, the Dreamcast died an ugly death at the hands of the PlayStation 2. The system didn't have the support of EA. Sega couldn't compete with Sony on marketing, the inclusion of a DVD drive, and the backwards compatibility included with the PlayStation 2. The end result is that Sega became what it is now: a software company. That's the official story, at least. - GamerFeed

Will enabling TCP Keep-alive solve this problem ? - Eric Logan
It's DOA for client-side feed readers as-is. Good luck getting people to open ports on their routers. Distributing all this work to clients doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Let an always-on, third-party service deal with all the pings and deliver all of the feed data serially over a long-polling HTTP connection. We don't lose any of the openness here: I can always switch services. - Matt Mastracci
I'm thinking XMPP is the real solution for native clients. If there was a push to get it included in Flash and Gears then adoption would be a no brainer. - scott anderson
It's not a big deal as long as these issues are addressed. The tricky part was getting mass #'s of publishers to put the cloud element in. There can be many iterations of pieces #2 and 3 (server and client). - Aaron Crews
With rssCloud are aggregators required to support SOAP and XML-RPC in addition to HTTP-POST? What about issues related to dynamic IP addresses? I develop applications for mobile phones. This spec introduces way too much complexity for the constraints of that platform. I need a really simple solution. - Fricker
I wish, instead of asking if something new is "all wet," we'd ask "how can we improve it." - Andrew Warner from iPhone
Andrew: the last section of the article is, in fact, how he believes RSSCloud can be improved. - Mark Trapp
I for one tried to submit my suggested improvements to Dave Winer's site but my comment was not accepted. Is there going to be any kind of independent review process for this spec? Will this spec eventually be submitted to a standards group? - Fricker
"Unless your server has a lot of distributed processing available" - I think that's the point of calling it a cloud. A hub is no computational slouch either. A queue can be kept per client and the push can be accomplished in parallel. The second point is if your computers should act as a server in the network. IMHO given the relative power of these machines now and in the future, not... more... - Todd Hoff

45 drives per unit and many units means they must be constantly replacing failed hard drives - just due to the sheer quantity of them in use - Jacob Old
It wasn't entirely clear to me from the blog post what you have to do to replace a drive. Looks like at minimum you have to remove the unit from the rack, and I don't see any drawer guides or similar to assist with that. And do they have to take the unit offline to replace a single drive? - Jason Wehmhoener
Geez. Back in 1998, Microsoft was bragging about their 1 TB cloud... :-) Millions of $ then I think. - Mitchell Tsai

So, they store their data "securely" in Palo Alto? That makes me scared. - Jonas S Karlsson
Quoted from blog- "Backblaze Storage Pods are building blocks upon which a larger system can be organized that doesn’t allow for a single point of failure." They have indicated an amazing amount of cost savings. - Wins Fern
$117k for a petabyte of storage. Wow. - Nicholas James
Petabyte schmetabyte. - Rick Cogley
Mitchell: I don't think 1TB was "millions of dollars" in 1998. - Steve de Mena
Nice idea. Pity that it only supports a HTTPS interface, not surprising at that cost though (the software that runs the filesystems on the NetApp and other devices isn't exactly cheap to write). Anyone see if they quoted transfer speeds? I'm wondering what impact the four SATA cards each with SATA multipliers on them has when it comes to access speeds. - Russ
Steve: according to http://www.littletechshoppe.com/ns1625... disk cost ~$0.08 / mb in 1998, which comes out to >$800,000 for 1 TB or just over a million bucks in todays dollars. so maybe not millions, but a million! - Karl Rosaen
Russ: It runs Debian. If you were rolling your own (and they don't sell these units), you could turn on NFS or some other protocol (CIFS, iSCSI). They only use HTTP because it's cloud storage. NFS license is a major expense on NetApp, but all the major Linux distributions can act as NFS servers, CIFS servers, and probably iSCSI targets. - Andy Dustman
Andy: I know that you could do that on them but it leaves the problem of what to do with the storage. You could merge the 3 volumes into an LVM VG but the performance could become an issue with any load on it. It seems I wasn't the only one to question the performance, while the views of a Sun engineer aren't exactly unbiased it does highlight some of the downsides: http://www.c0t0d0s0.org/archive... - Russ
Russ, great find, thanks. - Jason Wehmhoener
Fascinating article; but more questions: "In rough terms, every time one of our customers buys a hard drive, Backblaze needs another hard drive." -- so what happens when a drive fails; how much redundancy is there? What happens when a meteorite destroys the whole building; is there off site backup too? (I know this *is* the off-site backup, but still...) I wonder how much data flows in and out over time. Maybe I should just read their website. - Rob Fisher
Rob: they mention using 15 drive RAID6 volumes that can lose up to 2 drives before failure - Mike Chelen
The worst part about this cluster design is the fact that I couldn’t shut up about it for the first couple days after finding out about it. It was the solution I proposed to every problem. There were complaints. - A Mitchell
IMO RAID6 is not that great. Granted, it's highly unlikely to lose 3 drives at the same time, but there's still possibility. Besides, for write-intensive app, parity calculation is quite time-consuming. I personally prefer RAID 10 (striped array of RAID1 pairs). Yes the effective usable space is less than half total capacity, but for backups -- which will sooner or later be used to restore something -- I prefer data integrity over usage efficiency. - Pandu ● IT Optimizer from fftogo

"Now regional networks are gone. We first noticed the change when I was trying to search for my Facebook friends in New York City to plan for an upcoming trip. Friend after friend had their college or work networks, but no regional network. So I checked my own. Sure enough, “Silicon Valley” was gone, and so were the local networks for all of the Mashable editorial staff." - Oğuz Serdar from Bookmarklet

They never really expanded them in the first place. I mean, the physical Silicon Valley encompasses a pretty large area, and I could never drill down to, say, Mountain View or Fremont, so I never even tried. - adam garrett

"We still gotta wait until September 15th for the whole scoop, but B&H has gone ahead and spoiled some of the mystery of Archos' Android-based Archos 5, giving the internet tablet its own listing in a number of different storage capacity options, pictures in tow, as well as a $130 DVR station." - Bo Stern from Bookmarklet

Google Adds Keyword Forecasting To Insights For Search Tool - (future popularity of keywords)

Facebook obviously liked FriendFeed a long time ago. Why would they have copied so many features (feed item comments and the "Like" action, to name a couple) otherwise? It was only logical for this to happen eventually. Doesn't mean I like it, but acquisition is part of the game. I have the same feeling I did when SocialThing! was acquired by AOL, though. - Voyagerfan5761

I really don't see why people would be anything but excited about this Facebook freindfeed deal. Great news as far as I am concerned. The Friend feed team is going to go over facebook and make it that much easier to connect, share... isn't that what the social web is about? - Kevin Murray
I know a lot of people who use Facebook and enjoy it and that's fair enough. It's just not my cup of tea. The chaps from Friendfeed will get rich and the technology will get absorbed in Facebook but I can't see Friendfeed continuing in anything like it's present form. - Paul Nash

I have big loss of data concerns. See http://ff.im/6pHjo Is there any way to archive all my FriendFeed posts, likes, comments, and pictures (friendfeed-media.com) off-line? Near term future? - Kol Tregaskes
I don't see good things coming from this. Although I like Facebook, I liked Friendfeed more. Partly because of the environment and the smallness of it. That is now going to be ruined. So, 10-1 odds that Friendfeed will be no more within a year after it gets intergrated into Facebook? - Mathew™ one of a kind
I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck. - Jim Hearts FF
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want anything to be handed off to Facebook. And I don't want to lose anything. - Zio Bonino

"I bet I can find 1.000.0000 people who dislike this deal."...Welcome to FriendBook. - Jacque
Well, huge congraulations to you and your team, you deserve every success. To be honest I had presumed this would happen sooner or later - the only business model cool little startups have is to hope they get bought by someone bigger for their brains and technology. I'm going to be in San Francisco in a couple of weeks and was going to stop by your office to bring you a cake and thank you for a great product - maybe I still will if you're still there and there's still a FriendFeed! - Alex Lomas
The FF founders must have know this would be a very unpopular move. Most users I know here are not too fond of FB. - Rutger Blom

#ROFLMAO Is there anything more important than money? It seems NOT #ROFLMAO - Lora Lufark
I don't mean to be negative but there's got to be a win-win logic to each merger&acquisiton. Audience high in only quantity is clearly not a win for friendfeed in the long term by considering its unique selling points. Let's wait and see who will benefit from friendfeed's death now. - ayca
It's all about the money. I would have payed a couple of dollars each month to use FF. - Rutger Blom
Seriously, what is this? It's like Bret just announced that he's killed all your mothers or something. It could turn out good, it could turn out bad, but at the end of the day, who cares, it's just a website (I mean honestly, come on). I could see it going either way, but in the near term, this is a pretty big win for the FF team, so congrats guys. - Chieze Okoye
OMG! - keso
To be honest, my heart sank a little but I am happy to congratulate you and the team for building such a good brand. Well done. - Kevin J Hatton
I'm just surprised, that's all. I'm not saying this is a bad thing (it certainly isn't for the owners of FF). I'm willing to sit back and see what happens. - Jason Huebel
Wow, I specifically use friendfeed b/c it is not facebook. Sounds great for the friendfeed team, but not necessarily for friendfeed users. - Evan Parker
Born to be sold, like in the old "new economy" era. Remember the late nineties? - Federico Bolsoman
Sudden desire to check out Strands again... but hey, kudos on the incoming $$ for FF team - Leslie Poston
This is wisdom. Bracing for Google Wave is a good idea............. - Kevin J Hatton
this is clearly a talent aquisition... why am i not excited about this? could it be because facebook has been blatantly stealing features from friendfeed shamelessly. Likes were clearly not an original facebook idea...realtime feeds is another i could go on... - Tate DA FF MVP
While I'm sad, because I suspect this means the best things about FF will disappear or I'll be forced to use FB in some way, if the buyout was for some awesome amount of money, I can't say I blame 'em for taking an offer -- I would. - Andy Bakun
I came to FriendFeed because I don't like facebook. Now the question is, will facebook become more like friend feed? or will they just take friend feed and turn it into facebook? - Tom Ray
FF could be a good R&D arm for facebook. - Andy Bakun
My biggest concern here is that FB has a completely different audience than FF. - Rutger Blom
Fucking morons. FriendFeed is doomed now. Think logically. Facebook has NO REASON to keep FriendFeed alive. It will simply take FF's best features, suck the life of out of it, then trash FF. Way to go, FirnedFeed, damn. - Jeremy Buff
Fail. - Big K
Big Fail! - OnuRC
This announcement should have been held off until the plans for Friendfeed were known. Regardless, this is *bad* for FF users. Best case: it continues on, but with stagnated feature development. Worst case: it's gone. - tollie williams

I need to install "super PUKE" application ! - Bart LePoole
FFail. - rowlikeagirl
I don't want my FF feed on Facebook :( I use both, but maintain both profiles separate - Leandro Ardissone ⍨
Sigh... Happy for the team if this is what they want, but baffled by the move. The users that are going to leave because of this will make FF a graveyard and the users it gains, well... Hello spam? Sorry, but I don't like it. - Vince DeGeorge from iPhone
JEREMY+++++1 - Ahmet Alp Balkan
Wow! - felix
Well, I guess it is time to dismantle my friendfeed. We all know where this is headed. So, so glad I didn't move all my rss feeds from greader to friendfeed like so many cheerleaders suggested. - Matthew Speicher
Jeremy +1 - F. Batuhan Icoz
so what's next? where should we go? - Flavio
It's been fun here. - Capn' One Eye - adrift
Dang, and just as I was starting to get used to how FF works. FF is useful on it's own. I hope this only improves FF's system, rather than having it disappear into Facebook's wake. - Don Faulkner
My big question to everybody here is this: What are the potential downsides / upsides to this acquisition? I mean on paper I just don't see what the pros OR cons are. I don't care for Facebook but I don't see how them acquiring FF is going to change everything. - Nicholas Kreidberg
furthermore they are 2 different things: I follow a lot of people here that are not in my facebook list, which is for IRL friends! - Flavio
I don't know where to go next either. I had just settled down to make imaginary friends for all my non-FF tweeps, etc. now, I'm not sure if I should bother. - Don Faulkner from IM
I hope friendfeed continues to operate normally but it does not look good. - ashish
integrate best features of ff to fb, then try to innovate in fb if possible, then kill ff... that's it, cheers, all the best. grrrr... - Kemal
niczak has good points. FF & FB aren't exactly competitors, but they aren't orthogonal either. Let's hope FB's smart enough to see the difference and improve both platforms. - Don Faulkner from IM
Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline. - Ken Sheppardson
Don, I don't think FB wants to maintain two platforms. - Rutger Blom
first tr.im (heard about it yesterday), now this. I wasn't a heavy tr.im user (yet), but sad to see it go, even if I think url shortening is silly. - Don Faulkner from IM

Flavio, that's not very realistic I'm afraid, but I like the idea. - Rutger Blom
rutgerblom, I don't expect they do either, thus my angst over this. - Don Faulkner from IM
if there's a team willing to do it and money, and if we accept some ads as everywhere else, we could make a new FF without FB - Flavio
I have worked hard in avoiding signing up for FB. Does this mean I now automatically will be on FB by virtue of my FF account? - Tony Vota from iPhone
Tony, most likely - Rutger Blom
I'll have to go with Flavio's position too. Given this news (plus tr.im and who knows who's next), I'd tend to favor community supported or federated services for things like this in the future. - Don Faulkner from IM

trouble is (from my perspective), that the philosophies of the two platforms are at odds. FB wants to bring people to the site and keep them there, while FF is a hub, bringing people in and then sending them back out. Congrats, FF! I'm approaching the situation with cautious optimism. Reminder: The Five Stages Of Early Adopter Behavior (See Stage 4: Entitlement)
"At this point, often in part due to favorable feedback from the service's authors, the early adopter feels a sense of entitlement, that the product absolutely must be architected in the way they say so, even if to move in that direction wouldn't serve the larger installed base. Now, instead of suggesting quick ways the service could update, the calls are more like ultimatums, and if not quickly seeing a response, the early adopter can get extremely frustrated, at times, seeing this annoyance bubble up to the same degree their first comments on the product reeked of praise." - Louis Gray from Bookmarklet

I feel entitled to type in this box and push the button named "comment." Sorry, I thought that was what FriendFeed was designed for. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
I don't know that entitlement is the right word. For me, at least, it's more frustration. Here you have this great product. I want more people to know about it, but I'm having issues, be it my tech, user error or just loss of features, it's frustrating. If I'm having these issues, then there's no way I'll be able to explain to my friends and family why things are why they are. When you... more... - Admiral Anika
One point to the one above. I know that many companies who offer free service will or should charge for use at some point. I'm okay with that, but when they mess with functionality it's hard to justify paying for it. When your users are asking for the same thing over and over again, especially when you're in beta, don't give them a useless feature that offers nothing much to usability. At that point, it's hard to justify the ongoing use of something, let alone paying for it in the future. - Admiral Anika
Is it entitlement or ownership? People support what they help build, right? So maybe it is partly a sense of ownership... - Liza
Great conversation thread... Rule #1 if you do not own it, then do not falsely allow yourself to believe your vote will ever - or should ever - count. Sometimes the developers listen to your sound words of device, but in my humble findings often this waxes and wanes. Rule #2 is that step 5 is your alternative. Rule #3 is always see Rule #1 when you begin to think your opinion matters ;-) - Ken Stewart | ChangeForge

its a pretty graph and perhaps it is true, i have experienced it myself through mmos, beta testing, but did you actually have numbers or is this just instinct? - Robert Higgins
By the way, I'm ACTIVELY still in the promotion phase. I'm showing FriendFeed to EVERYONE as everyone I met in Boulder last week can attest to. That's one thing that Louis' graph doesn't understand. I go through all of these phases IN PARALLEL. Not serially. So, deal with it. :-) - Robert Scoble
The graph is simple. People are not simple. :) The downside to acting like a #4 is dorks looking for an excuse tend to use it as an excuse. Just wait. (Not even Scoble likes FriendFeed any more... he says... "x") So don't give the bastards any ammo. :) - Louis Gray

Interestingly, those seeking to distill life into simplistic terms can be dangerous. Like those dorks who spout off non-sensical rules ;-) - Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
I do think it is used as ammo, which stinks, b/c a discussion we should have (UI on FF) becomes a territorial battle. There were great points made, but also a lot of juvenile comments which I hope are ignored. As I learned in my first online attack, "don't feed the trolls". They are everywhere and not unique to specific networks. - Liza

Robert: you didn't ask me, but I'll answer anyway: Outlook/Exchange. Although that has changed a lot over the years but I first started using whatever Microsoft called it (MSMail?) back in 1993. Louis: yeah, but if I worried about what dorks think I would just stay off the Internet. :-) - Robert Scoble
thought about why and the stages of the graph. while i still use hotmail, for family and things i have migrated to gmail mostly. I personally never did step 4 with hotmail, but i did get buddies on it a long time ago before they even had their own computers. It was cool to promote hotmail and messenger in the 90's felt hip to chat with people in China when I lived in USA. I still like sky-drive for the free 25 gigabytes of online storage, so will probably never migrate. - Robert Higgins
Robert, I still use .Mac mail, and have for a very long time. (Some day I may move to GMail, but not yet). I have stuck with Mac OS through all its iterations from System 6 or so, so I assume that counts. I've been on FriendFeed longer than Twitter, and Facebook longer than FriendFeed and Google Reader longer than Facebook. - Louis Gray
thats interesting, but in term of early adopter and stages where are you now with Mac OS for example. - Robert Higgins
I would say Stage 3 with Mac OS. I don't feel like they need to change anything to reward me for my loyalty. I've never been a Stage 2 user for Twitter, so I hang out in Stage 3 or 4, it's just a utility, as is Facebook. I am Stage 2 and 3 with FriendFeed and Google Reader. I will always push FriendFeed and Google Reader, even if I know they could improve, because I get great value from both and trust the teams. - Louis Gray
Louis: I was through all five stages with the MacOS by 1993. Started over again in 2003. Heheh. I forgot that I still use Hotmail and have for a long time (I remember waiting in line for StarWars #4 overnight with the Hotmail founders and thinking they were pretty cool). - Robert Scoble
you are such a geek scoble waiting in line overnight for Star Wars #4 with hotmail founder - Robert Higgins
Robert: that is true, but, as waiting overnight for the iPhone proved, the line itself was more fun than seeing the movie or getting the phone. In Silicon Valley these things turn into impromptu barcamps. Several companies had tents and it was an all-night party. My son did both with us and they were among the best things I've ever done with him. Good bonding time. :-) - Robert Scoble
Higgins: if I remember right one company even paid for a T-1 line so they could provide wifi to everyone. In Silicon Valley we take these things seriously! :-) - Robert Scoble
Nice bell curve, this typically represents most things - I can be in different stages at different times! - for example - different features of the product (ie I can discover a feature, then promote, etc). Not sure about Migration phase, I would prefer to call it Withdrawal - Geer
I think this post was bad form. I have experienced the same problems with admiring the power and brilliance of the features and simultaneously being confused by their counter intuitiveness. In any case if the graph is accurate Robert's activity would have already slowed and will continue to slow down until migration. The bad form is explicitly referencing Robert. - Ru Viljoen
Ru: thank you. Truth is in just the past week I was in all five phases of FriendFeed and even Twitter. I never liked this post by Louis' even though there's some truth to it and I'm still trying to figure out why. - Robert Scoble
It's a post more human behavior centric than tech focused. Of course i'm interested in HB and how the brain works. I object to the generalization. We all have unique patterns of usage. There are probably hundreds of tools I use a day and am unaware of - Mark Essel from iPhone
Ru, I know FriendFeed is not perfect. But pound for pound, they have the best talent in the business. I also read and enjoyed the exchange in Robert's piece, but didn't "like" it, as he says he didn't this one. Robert and I have a long history of agreeing 95% of the time, and have a mutual respect that lets us exchange ideas this way. I personally would not have approached the issues in the way he did, explicitly referencing Kevin, for example. - Louis Gray
Louis: Kevin runs design at FriendFeed and he's a guy I've judged that is able to take a huge amount of criticism (earned or unearned) and keep his cool and tell you why he's doing what he's doing. Like you said, they have the best talent in the business. Kevin proved it again yesterday. - Robert Scoble
My 2 cents about FriendFeed interface design: Overloading/hiding of controls is often used to present a simpler UI. It's difficult to find a balance, and often testing things on novice users is better than on veteran users to get a fresh response. One difficult example (which I don't know if I could improve) is Canon's cameras (of which I've used 4 cameras). Canon had a standard way of... more... - Mitchell Tsai
Sometimes interface design can be complicated with people at various stages of behavior. Yahoo! tried to change their interface after a few years and got a "New Coke" response (e.g. focus groups, testing, etc... before release). The new interface worked better & made more sense, but they got 1,000s of e-mail complaints from older experienced users - ended up staying with the old... more... - Mitchell Tsai

Indeed. Outlook 98 is the devil :) - Roberto Bonini
Thomas - It's interesting to see what "stands the test of time". Used HotBot for search 1996-2000, but Google's cache won me. MS Multiplan was my 1st spreadsheet (not a Lotus 1-2-3 fan), but Excel beat out many better spreadsheets. MS Outlook won me with color e-mails, shared calendars, & event coordination. Google Maps still hasn't beat MapQuest IMO. I'm still resistant to using GMail... more... - Mitchell Tsai
Considering I'm on stage 4 right now, I wonder how much I stand to make from the sale of Friendfeed? - Andrew Smith
Louis, Robert: It makes sense to me that a service would be forced to field speculative criticism and that the criticism should be answered on the merits of the argument. In this instance I thought that Robert insightfully pointed out the problem with the UI and then must have been totally side swiped by an unrelated personal criticism from someone who is well regarded. I hate to see... more... - Ru Viljoen

Team Apart hits the right price for collaboration: $0.00
"Rather than trying to replace Microsoft Office, as Google obviously hopes to do, they’ve picked a niche on which to focus: Team meetings for workgroups much like the Team Apart team, separated by geographical distance but connected by broadband. A Team Apart meeting room can be filled with notepads, whiteboards for freehand drawing, images, web pages, and live video chat windows for participants. The meeting rooms, reachable at teamapart.com but stored in the cloud somewhere, preserve the materials from their last meeting. ss1Without thinking, I instantly liked holding meetings at Team Apart. The lightly-colored default design is simply appealing — it’s got Web 2.0 style without being overbearingly so. The rooms aren’t overbuilt, so they’re easy to operate via the few buttons at the top. My meetings never go beyond four people, so the four-person restriction in the current free version isn’t a problem. And I have the option to use a still photo instead of a video feed as my avatar, for those times I don’t feel like being watched while I eat during a meeting." - Paul Buchheit from Bookmarklet

Ray, the broadest, most general product isn't always the best or most successful. - Paul Buchheit
This, to me, would be a logical extension for FriendFeed as it moves into business, with real-time chat on the side. - Louis Gray
Paul, I agree, but that applies to Friendfeed too :) I love the FF UI, how stripped down and uncluttered it is, it does exactly what I want. But if FF+FB forces me to log into Facebook now and view FF functionality as part of the larger FB UI, I'm not so sure it will be as appealing anymore. I still want to go to FF directly, I'm not really interested in FB features. - Ray Cromwell

Holden, although I understand your spirit there... how does the extra $100 change your life? In my opinion, $200 is the same as $400 in the same way that $1700 is the same as $2100. Do you work five more hours at your job or 10 more? It's non-consequential. What makes the difference is does this become something you need, and will you pay for it? - Louis Gray
Goes from a no-brainer at $200 to a "ehh... do I REALLY need it?" at $400. - ronin
I like it--moving us closer to the world where paper is quaint, antique, a hobby. The problem with the price moving ever higher seems to be that it starts to enter the realm where one could just buy a little laptop. Why this and not that? - Kathy Fitch
I agree with both points. $200 is the sweet spot although they'd probably hemorrhage losses for a while. But $400 isn't a terribly large chunk of change when it comes down to it. Think of the Kindle. That only does print material (and a small selection at that) primarily. This does web only. The web opens a lot more opportunities than a book reader. - Zach Flauaus
And as the price keeps going up, it's going to have to be something really special if Apple really are unleashing the iTablet soon... #Inevitable-iTabletComment - Andy Bold
$400 means it's competing with netbooks and low-cost notebooks - a crowded market if ever there was one. - invariant - farewell FF

I love the "the rumored apple tablet will kill it" stuff. Does anyone remember how long Apple's been rumored to be about to release a slate/tablet/umpc/netbook/tablet PC? - Joel Bennett
I would like one, but US$400 is NZ$700, so if Apple tablet comes in at rumoured US$800, then NZ$1400 is way out of most peoples league - hate it. - Geer
I'm a bit surprised of no Bluetooth in the specs. The lack of BT for keyboard and A2PD plus the price hike really has limited my lust for this device. - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
SGD575. Hmm.. Now that I have the iPhone, I wonder if I really need this? Hmm.. - Winston Teo
For $400 USD I think its a great price - Nicholas James
$400 USD is to top of the price point that I believe most people will be willing to pay for a device that will be used to surf the web while watching TV. As any new product, including the yet to be announce Apple iTablet, the price will go down after the initial release and the TechCrunch gets some of its R&D back. I wouldn't be shocked to see the price drop to $350 after 3 or 4 months. - Casey Russell
1 USB port? Really? One USB port… - Remo

Remo, to be fair, the crunchpad is designed to be held. Having USB cords in the way really hampers the way the design is intended to be used. I experienced this experience with the Raon Everrun. - manielse (Mark Nielsen)

It should have a well defined identity, not copying things this way. I say that just because of the screenshots I've seen, so I might be wrong - maybe it got easier to use or prettier in some GTK theme or something. But I don't think so, it's probably still slow and ugly. - Arnaldo M Pereira

^Exactly. Many of our enlisted men and women are actually really just boys and girls in their teens to mid 20s. I can't imagine how terrible this is gonna be for their morale. Between this, Veterans Hospital health scandals and other issues, I can't help but feel sometimes that we're the only country that asks our fighters to die for us and the kicks 'em in the face when they're done - LANjackal from IM
i guess they'll have to stick with plain old email and IM for contacting their friends and loved ones... don't you wish they had these tools back in the revolutionary war? and the civil war? where's historical tweet when you need it? - Chris Heath

In 2003, I connected with a few USMC Officers almost immediately following their deployment. For an entire year, I engaged in daily conversations with them without fail. I was determined to continue the almost vigil until they were brought back safely. They came home. We still maintain our friendships. Did I help them get through each day? Did their ability to stay connected to the US and to those who they care about help in anyway? Ask any soldier and I'm sure you'll receive similar answers. - Michele Lorito-Chase

Anyone else find it interesting that it is only this military branch that is banning the social media networks? Why not all branches or no branches by DoD directive? - Walt Ruppar
DoD is reviewing it, has been expected to change it (yet again) for a week or so. I was surprised the Corps did it before the DoD as a whole. - Michael W. May
Why would the Marines ban these things? - Jannifer @wordsforliving
security - chaz2b
It isn't necessarily that the USMC considers it's Marines incapable of self-control - it has plenty of experience dealing with that with just a normal telephone conversation. One aspect of why these networks are being banned/controlled is that they are adding on more location aware and metadata collecting services - so the Marine could easily give up their location without even being aware. - bear (aka Mike Taylor)
also, its an avenue to diss superiors, and thats already been an issue (superiors catching it and discipling) - chaz2b
I would be concerned if a Marine had the time to update his or her Facebook status multiple times a day or was tweeting on a regular basis. I understand that staying connected is important for moral and peace of mind, but these are all new forms of instant communication. It's not like phone calls and email are being banned. I'm pretty sure in the movies they show soldiers that had to write letters. Those toke days to arrive! - Heather
