Why are the Abingdonians dressed like that? - Eivind
The ones wearing hats, coats, and gloves are cold people. I was dressed that way too. The ones in white, wearing top hats, and brandishing handkerchiefs are part of the Abingdon Traditional Morris Dancers, one of whom is my wife's cousin and the reason for our visit. The people with brass instruments were a brass band who managed a whole half of a Christmas carol before we managed to get out of earshot. The person in white who I treated to some high key processing was a woman on stilts pretending to be the Snow Queen. The event was the Abingdon Extravaganza, raising money for local charities, and the precursor to the switching on of the town's Christmas lights. - Mark H
