Seems like a can of worms to me. Who is going to decide who they honor and who they don't? This is a step down a political path that a Google would be wise to avoid.
- Dawn
Google should be more political. It's just very fine.

Well, it's official. I am now an employee of Facebook :) And as promised, now that the deal has closed, I've finally gone and created a Facebook account. - http://www.facebook.com/anayang
Congrats. But do you intend to use FB only for private networking ?
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
That was fast, not even a week after Bret's announcing acceptance of "Facebook friend request" [http://blog.friendfeed.com/2009...]. Given that you must be the single non-engineer of the twelve FF personnel (as per TechCrunch report of there being 11 engineers in the company), what will be your function and duties at the Facebook Hogwarts Manor? http://images.google.com/images...

Is Facebook account a requirement for all Facebook employees? Is it considered "testing" when you spend paid by the company time on your own Facebook account? Or it's a "crime" only for the QA department to use their own (as alternative to testing ones) accounts?
- earlyadopter
TwerpScan gives you the ability to dynamically analyze who you follow and who is following you across almost every data point that is tied to a Twitter account. What’s really cool though, is that you can sort Twitter users across multiple dimensions at once. The data you can use to sort by includes: Screen Name, Name, Followers count, Following count, Ratio of Followers to Following, Number of Tweets and Last Tweet.

App looks good. Too bad it's telling me "We're sorry, but something went wrong. We've been notified about this issue and we'll take a look at it shortly."
- Outsanity
It's working now. I would make this a Fluid window
- Outsanity
Good to hear, Outsanity. The server got kinda flooded last night, heh. There was a lot of traffic all of a sudden. ;) Sorry about the issues, tho.
- Carlo Zottmann
I wonder if I'm alone on this but do you think a option to report someone as spam could be added? Good or bad idea?
- Outsanity
Actually not a bad idea… could you post it on http://twerpscan.uservoice.com/, please? Don't even have to register there. It's just easier for me to figure out the most wanted features this way.
- Carlo Zottmann
BTW, I've just rolled the new user drilldown feature! In the big table, look for the looking glass icon in each row. Click it! :)
- Carlo Zottmann
Tried to use this, but it says there was an error when I try to login. Wanted to blog about it :(
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Rahsheen, sorry to hear that. Very rarely login won't work, and I'm still looking for the root cause. I'm working on it, tho. For the time being you could try logging out of Twitter and in again and retrying. Apologies for the trouble.
- Carlo Zottmann
Yah, can't get into this thing. Dies when it tries to redirect me back to the application. Wanted to blog about it. :(
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
It does the same for me at the moment; Twitter's timing out. If I had to guess I'd say it's a DDoS fallout… not entirely sure yet what the cause was before that. I'll drop you a note once I (think I) got it sorted.
- Carlo Zottmann
Mike, I just shot you a heads-up via Twitter: I've implemented stand-alone drilldown pages. Here's yours: http://twerpscan.com/info... — and here's mine: http://twerpscan.com/info... . If you want to look up another user, either click the current user's name in the headline to change it, or go to http://twerpscan.com/info... and enter it there. It's just a first shot at the moment, but I'm having plans for more. Let me know what you think! :)

a browser is a FIREFOX~haha ! and google supposed the answer would be "chrome"?
- yagami
One of my less techy coworkers (all of us are techy, basically, except this guy) went to Google to search for Gmail the other day. Guess I should be glad he didn't search for Google first. I'm not surprised most people hadn't heard of Chrome, but I guess I think of URLs and search as two such different things that I wouldn't have thought conflating browsing with searching would be so common. I rarely search. Maybe that's why.

I don't know if it's really sad. People don't care. As long as it works, and they find the things they need on the internet, it doesn't matter to most of them. But, still, I would have expected that more that 8% knew what it was.

Some great programs on this list. I would have included Chrome instead of Safari, though. I think Safari for Windows isn't quite ready for prime time yet, neither version 3 nor 4 beta.
- Ray Metzen
the fact that you have safari on this list means you have never actually used it for windows
- Zach Scott
If you're a blogger, Windows Live Writer is a great free app and one that I'd have on my list - it's a rare gem from Microsoft ...

@Patrick, I have used Live writer, I also agree it is a rare gem from Microsoft. I honestly don't like it though.
- TheHenry
You must be smoking if you think Safari's a Top 10 Windows app

Not smoking. BTW I took what all you said, and I changed it to google Chrome. :)
- TheHenry
I find the Safari 3 to be a bit more better than the chrome, I didn't like the beta layout of the four though. Something was very un-safariish like.
- Faraz Mullick
Faraz, it's probably because they appropriated Google's layout. TBH I actually like Chrome more than Safari, personally.
- Chieze Okoye
Didn't like the list, and I don't use most of them. A bit lame.
- Ozkan Altuner
Hey, its one man's opinion. Don't hate. He amended the Safari recommendation which should give him some breathing room ;).

Nice Apps listed. CCleaner is highly recommended for Windows users.

I had a plurk account a while back. liked it better than twitter but after the novelty wore off, people went back to using twitter and i was left alone. :) a service is no fun if your contacts aren't also using it.
- ♥patricia♥
I call for mass defection from twitter to plurk & identi.ca ;)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
i try plurk now and then, love the features, but connected to noone - look me up on plurk and identica!
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
I will find you there later today Joelle. :) (both..I'm guruvan everywhere...easy to find)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
That's Plurk's problem is that no-one really uses it. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
the only thing i like is the time line. twitter doesnt have that
- Alfredo
I'm jazzed to try it out. I've been meaning to for a while, and finally signed up. Soon as I finish the day's work I'll play with it
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I love plurk--used it like crazy for awhile, there, and then just . . .stopped. Game to give it a whirl again if others are. Have to start all over with the karma, though. I'm at http://www.plurk.com/kafkaz
- Kathy Fitch
is there a Plurk room here? Maybe we should have one, and everyone post their plurk URLs ?
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I am resurrecting plurk. I had a lot of fun with it then all my friends abandoned it.
- Kendra <3 Three Lions
Mona, blinking? You mean the emoticons? Yeah, they're a little messy. As for the timeline being backwards, well it suits me that way around. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
At least you can have conservations on Plurk. On Twitter is this difficult at best.
- Kol Tregaskes
Plurk is very popular in South Korea .. just as Orkut is in Brazil
- Petr Buben
of course, there comes a point where you don't need to add any more features to something, otherwise it dies a horrible, feature creep fuelled death.
- alphaxion
twitter is likely to become one of the multitudes....nothing special except a name, and once people get sick of the poor quality, they will flock to all the other ones. I don't know that any of the other microblogs will become huge though
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I agree with Josh - it's all about Twitter and Facebook. There is no way Plurk will "blow up", I will put money on it.
- Mona Nomura
they aren't likely to keep it up with twitter either. "hollywood" fads come and go very quickly...(it will go on for a little while yet though)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I'm sorry, I was on the Plurk wagon last year and it's just not gonna take off. Too much "attention overhead".
- Neal Jansons
Just sign up and it seems to be nice to use :)
- Nia
seems more likely that laconica based federations will be what beats twitter out (but I reserve the right to change my mind after I plurk for a bit)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I'm pretty sure that identi.ca has seen a marked increase in users since the apluk/cnn debacle and oprah
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
i have more than once said that the ideal solution is a decentralised network - one where we can choose where to host and store our profile and messages, but still be in touch with everyone on any other similar system - i.e. the structure of email or newsgroups or irc. laconica/identi.ca etc. does that - whether it is the final solution or not remains to be seen, we still lack the full standard/protocol for profile, message and topic interconnection
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Joelle, this is what works best for the rest of the internet programs and protocols. It should work best for microblogging. There are standards developing, and many systems interconnect
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Having them all feed in to FriendFeed would be a big step in the right direction as well :)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I'm afraid I don't think Plurk will compete with Twitter, even though it's a better system than Twitter. So it's Twitter as it has the userbase but Plurk has the features for me and can hold a conversatation unlike Twitter. But who needs either when we have FriendFeed, hehe? ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Josh, I think I'm quite clear in stating I prefer Plurk as it has the features but I use Twitter because it has the userbase.
- Kol Tregaskes
Twitter is here to stay. Just watch when all the celebs catch on.
- Mona Nomura
Anyway, you can use both by Hellotxt or Ping.fm. ;-) Celebrities? Oh joy.
- Kol Tregaskes
I use Twitter instead of Plurk because I don't have to constantly sit on a webpage monitoring it and because the whole "Karma" thing, which rewards people for posting. I use Twitter instead of Identi.ca because no one except open source geeks are on Identi.ca or know of it, and while I am an open source geek, I like a larger community with more diverse sets.
- Neal Jansons
does plurk (like identi.ca) have to/from twitter integration? seems a fair amount use identi.ca and blow off twitter all together...and yet another reason to use multi-network client (like peoplebrowsr) hehe
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
they'll catch on, and then it will become even more of a broadcast-only medium than it already is.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
You know what I kinda miss? Pownce. I liked some of the people there a lot and it could be a lot of fun.
- Neal Jansons
Kol, ping is a write only interface, no? Using takes both directions. And Neal, how are you watching FriendFeed?
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
just making sure..I was using ping for a while, but feeding all of it into FF (and then out to twitter) winds up with many multiple posts
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Haven't joined plurk, but I remember when identi.ca hit the scene last year, everybody was touting it as the "Twitter Killer". Staked my username there, as well as at Rejaw. But as was mentioned earlier, most people eventually abandoned them and migrated back to Twitter. With the coverage that Twitter's getting in the mainstream news lately, I think it will take something on the scale of what Google did to Yahoo to knock Twitter off their microblogging throne.
- Sharon McPherson
I signed up for Plurk when it first came out, I think, but never really used it. I'm joeygibson over there, if anyone wants to add me.
- Joey Gibson
Josh, me or someone else? I'm active on Plurk just no way near as active as on Twitter. Why can't I promote the former service?
- Kol Tregaskes
I also actually want to be present on the services I am on...there for conversing, not just broadcasting. I used to really like Rejaw and Kwippy, too, but for the same reasons as Plurk I had to drop them...too much attention overhead.
- Neal Jansons
As I already mentioned somewhere, I only use Plurk because most of my friends from my country are there. It doesn't change the fact that I _hate_ Plurk.
- LouCypher
I plurk (through ping.fm) and mostly just hold some conversations there. I dunno. It's neat, but doesn't integrate well with something like gwibber (no API). I'm gamerchick02 if you want to connect.
- Amy H.
Putting friend requests in at Plurk for some of you as I go along, here. I like it. I find it pretty easy to scroll though the timeline. Plus, it's easier to have something approaching discussion there. Also, you can share graphics, video, music very easily. I really like it much, much better than Twitter. Not sure why I backed off. Was close to Plurk nirvana (much attention to that, there), and then moved along for some reason.
- Kathy Fitch
Plurk is pretty cool and all, but at some point having accounts with all of these microblogging/social networking sites is sort of like having multiple email accounts. I mean, I have a Hotmail account, Yahoo account, 2 Gmail accounts, work email...but I really only use my work and one Gmail account.
- mark
True, Mark. I think what drew me to Plurk initially is that because it was new, folks were eager to add connections. That wasn't my initial experience on Twitter at all. Once I started focusing on Twitter, Plurk kind of fell by the wayside. Right now, FF is definitely my favorite thing, so most of my social net time is going here.
- Kathy Fitch
I'm pretty new to FF overall, but I'm already starting to make this--along with Facebook (because of all my old high school/college friends there)--my main social networking stop...especially considering that you can tap into the other sites from here.
- mark
The whole karma and badges thing on plurk seems too sophmoric for my taste.
- Aaron Whitaker
have to agree with you Kathy. But I note that if something makes it to my opening set, or most used screen on Chrome, I'm likely to have it open all the time. identi.ca has made it because of integration in peoplebrowsr. Anything else that makes it there will be on my radar.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I prefer plurk personally, but no one I know uses it.
- Soup
Soup, that's the only reason I don't use it more. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
The timeline with inconsistent scales is balls.
- Larry Hudson
I'm constantly on Plurk still, I made a few friends on it and enjoy the discussions between them.
- Andrew Trinh
I used plurk for a while, but also thought it too busy and soured on the whole concept. I then meandered over to Twitter.
- Brent - Loving Life
Well, I see that the timeline there is definitely less crowded, now. Guess others just kind of fell away as well. It was fascinating, actually, to be there as folks were discovering it, and to watch how quickly those who wanted to be the gurus moved in to establish that position.
- Kathy Fitch
@Josh, I don't like the design, the timeline and the sick karma points system.
- Rutger Blom
Also Twitter won the microblogging war. Everything else microblogging can just as well close down at this point.
- Rutger Blom
interesting. caused me to go back and look at my Twitter vs Plurk post from June nearly 11 months ago. http://www.mediadeluge.com/post.... I underestimated Twitter's stickiness -- mostly due to apps and huge follower counts that aren't easily exportable.
- Christian Anderson
I have to agree about the karma system being a turnoff, but lots of people apparently saw it as motivating initially. For awhile, there, so many plurks were about karma that I took to posting a "karma image of the day" as a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the obsession. Apparently, some folks actually lost interest once they hit nirvana. Game over.
- Kathy Fitch
@ Josh .. Plurk certainly is innovative, interesting. ..on the other hand, I do not have anything against Twitter. However, I prefer Friendfeed. my question is, WHY 140 chars? are we adult enough to opt for more? ... with some expand button?
- Petr Buben
update :Plurk has been shut down in China.

This situation is like it was with Netscape 4.x years back. Actually it is one of the reasons why IE6 got so strong share and we are in this situation now.

While the U.S. numbers are 3.9 million for Justin.tv, 14 million for Hulu, and 4 million for Veoh. (Ustream.tv seems to be the second-largest live video streaming site with 6.7 million global monthly visitors and 1.4 million in the U.S.). These are all site numbers, Quantcast also measures “network” numbers which presumably includes videos embedded elsewhere, and those are about double the site stats for each service.
