I actually had a pretty good / easy Monday - daughter off school and providing laughs all day etc - do I still qualify for bunny viewing?
- Patrick Jordan
FriendFeed update. Paul Buchheit wrote me and said he's been very sick the past few days. That might explain why he hasn't engaged the way we want. He also offered to do an interview with me to discuss the future of FriendFeed and what they are doing at Facebook soon. We're working that out, hopefully soon (but might not be until November sometime)
Bruce: FriendFeed=Facebook. So, I'm interested in what he's doing and I'm a big fan of Facebook's. Twitter needs some competition. The Fail Whale is getting to me.
- Robert Scoble
I know it's a stretch but can we gather specific questions for Paul to answer?
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
When other sites like twitter come out with new features, you want to be at the front of the excited crowd. FriendFeed will make you into that curmudgeon who's always saying, "So what? They did that two years ago at FriendFeed."
- Bruce Lewis
Cjay: I've been working on this interview since before Facebook bought FriendFeed. :-)
- Robert Scoble
manielse: well, the interview isn't on 100% yet and now that I've talked about it in public who knows what will happen? But if it does happen of course we'll get you involved.
- Robert Scoble
Cjay: I might be a rusty wheel, but remember two things: 1. I put many many thousands of hours into FriendFeed before the sale, bringing my audience over here at great risk to my personal brand. Lots of "experts" like Mike Arrington told me I was wrong to do that. 2. I'm still here.
- Robert Scoble
But yes I would agree that allowing and or resting your personal branding on a service thats based on a cloud application with it's roots depending on a social network model is very risky.
- Cjay
Cjay: actually it's not. It just looks risky.
- Robert Scoble
To those giving Scoble crap for being on FF, aren't you tired of that? You all have been doing that for at least a year. Enough. For us on FF, we'd love to see an interview, thanks.
- Eric @ CS Techcast
Chicken soup - but stay away from those soul books ;) Hope you're up to speed soon, Paul.
- Micah Wittman
Looking at the time-scale, doesn't that actually answer the question? You don;t wait THAT long to deliver good news or to debunk a false rumour that killings your platform (well, Zucks platform).
- Jim Connolly
Paul - sorry to hear that! (it's 2:30 am here, I can empathize with your sleep problem)
- Susan Beebe
from BuddyFeed
Eric, sorry if it sounded like I was giving him crap. That wasn't my intention. I think Scobleizer has a serious career decision to make: http://ourdoings.com/ourdoin...
- Bruce Lewis
The problem i see is that social network cloud applications seem to live in peoples heads rent free.
- Cjay
Given Paul's response to the "friendfeed is dead" nonsense https://friendfeed.com/paul... I kind of think that he would have been better off not giving a response until there was more to say. He didn't convincingly state that friendfeed isn't dead...
I think he had to - your brother was sending all his users away
- Jesse Stay
Instead he basically confirmed the rumors that work on friendfeed has pretty much stopped and instead the team is focusing on bringing friendfeed style updates in to Facebook. Obviously, there's a sector of the community that could care less about what's being done to Facebook.
- Alex Scoble
To be fair I doubt he'd know for certain what FF's future is.
- Mark H
He didn't say FriendFeed was going away - I am willing to bet money it will not go away
- Jesse Stay
I clicked on over to the articles mentioned and as soon as they loaded I found myself thinking, "Oh good grief. I couldn't care less about Facebook." Couldn't drum up enough interest to even skim the information. I'd love to see an actual write up about the state of FF though.
- pea ♥ fierce as a woozle
We all know that it's going away, the question is when. Consumers don't like vagaries. They want to know that something is going to be around for a long time. Right now we have no idea how long friendfeed will be around and of course this is turning people off.
- Alex Scoble
I was a fluff post by Paul. "We hear your noise and something is going to happen but we won't tell you yet so keep waiting."
- Rochelle
I thought it was perfectly reasonable, for a walrus. :-)
- Glen Campbell, B.A.
Yep, Rochelle. That's why I think they would have been better off waiting until they knew something more concrete, instead of what they gave us.
- Alex Scoble
from IM
It doesn't matter, Jesse...it only matters what it feels like...and right now to a lot of people it feels like it's going away.
- Alex Scoble
And I'm telling people not to feel that way
- Jesse Stay
I guess I'm not sufficiently confused. Development on FriendFeed has stopped, the team is spread out at Facebook implementing FriendFeed-like features. At least that's how I've interpreted everything Paul, Bret, et al have said (or implied) since the acquisition. The interview Paul did with Steve Gillmor at Facebook, other video you can find, etc.
- Ken Sheppardson
Sounded like a confirmation no work will be done on FF. I'll give it a year until Facebook pulls the plug due to bandwidth costs.
- Rodfather
I think it was as solid as it could be and addressed Scoble position; FF's not going away, and further development is still planned & underway.
- sofarsoShawn
And I was just about to add a rev to the FF plug-in for Firefox. Maybe I'll wait and see how it all turns out
- Dave Hodson
Yep, Jesse, I appreciate that you are doing that. I guess we should all do that.
- Alex Scoble
Agree a lot of writing, but not much said.
- Kim Landwehr
Ken has it right *sigh*. Why would Paul even post if he's not going to say anything? Jesse, it "may" stay, but right now that's not the plan. If it were, they'd be screaming from the mountain tops not to go anywhere....
- Matthew DeVries
It doesn't matter, Matthew. friendfeed exists as long as we say it does. Scream it from the rooftops that friendfeed is alive and kicking!
- Alex Scoble
This is a community driven service...as long as the community exists, so does the service. I'll turn off the lights when every one else leaves.
- Alex Scoble
from IM
I agree his response was less than convincing and actually a bit concerning.... oh and of course he is unwilling to leave a comment on this thread ... =\
- Nicholas Kreidberg
Yeah, so we have to make our own response. Do it now! This is your call to action!
- Alex Scoble
from IM
I'll hang out as long as friends are here. But I no longer feel part of Paul et al's "crew".
- Matthew DeVries
Jesse - what makes you so certain FF will not go away? Do you have some inside scoop?? ;)
- Susan Beebe
"FriendFeedy goodness to the larger world"?!? So, in other words, Facebook is gonna look awesome, right?
- Steven Perez
How does it feel like "it's going away"? Aside from people saying it, that is? I mean, traffic seems to me to be reasonably steady. Individual people come and go; it's kind of true of any forum that not everyone is on all the time at the same volume.
- Andrew C
If enough people start shouting that a bad thing is happening, Andrew, it can feel like it is. That's how bank runs happen and panics/stampedes/tramplings at concerts/public venues.
- Alex Scoble
What does smart or stupid have to do with it...it's an emotional response. Completely different part of the brain.
- Alex Scoble
I think bank runs, tramplings, and the like are stupid. There's needless havoc caused by people acting, well, stupidly.
- Andrew C
And if I said that your comments made me sad, would you say that was stupid too?
- Alex Scoble
Probably. Thanks to the flu, I am feeling particularly misanthropic today.
- Andrew C
ROFL at least you are being consistent!
- Alex Scoble
from IM
I don't like cryptic people, and the people in charge of FF are becoming more and more cryptic. Not going to leave until the kracken takes us, but the butterfly metaphor was stupid.
- Jon, the Beartato of FF
Andrew: a lot of little things have been going wrong that usually get fixed quickly. Since the developers have been busy with other new projects (read: integrating FF designs into FB), these things have not been fixed as quickly as they ordinarily had. And since growth has been more or less steady, a sudden influx of new people is unlikely to be the problem. Add this state to Paul's statement, and things don't look good.
- Steven Perez
from IM
*tsk* *tsk* :O .... That looks to-die-for!... And now I'm staring O_O :P
- Brandon
LOL ~ What did I do? ;p *smiles* I don't know why you're staring because this is only the beginning of my evil plan for revenge! There is so much more torture where this came from, believe me!!! ;)

I like that in friendfeed reposting isn't necessary. If I see something I like, I "Like" it and then all my friends (except for the "Ur doing it wrong" crowd who have FOAF turned off) see it. That's way better than Twitter.
I'm doing it wrong and am happy that way. I reshare to reach Facebook and MySpace friends and other outlets for my feed.
- xero
FWIW- I have FoaF turned off and, from my perspective, that has saved me from seeing Alex's 42,000 likes. I may as well view the public timeline. But if you have something he REALLY want even us wrong-doers to see, all you gotta do is hit the handy dandy "Share" link.
- Paul Reynolds
Yeah, I'll never re-share something unless it's a link to a lame site like Digg
- Alex Scoble
from IM
But I do agree with your overall point that FriendFeed is way better for sharing other people's stuff and aggregating everyone's conversation around that item (unless you Re-share, which could be fixed with some simple UI changes)
- Paul Reynolds
And you don't turn off FOAF through settings. You first hide a friend of a friend thread in your feed, click More and then select hide all friend of a friend threads.
- Alex Scoble
Thanks Alex... Found it and didnt turn it off. But I am a little smarter than I was now.
- Cody Heitschmidt
LOL "Your doing it wrong!" LOL! Love it. YDIW people on FF... yes.. that is the new name for the whiny bitches.
- CW™
What I hate is when people tell me how to use Twitter. Um, look at how many updates I have, I've been using it for a long time. I know how to draw in a crowd.
- Patrick
from twhirl
Yep. RT and @Replies are user hacks to get Twitter to do what FF does natively...
- Tom Horn
Totally with you on this. It's the killer feature of FF. Also like feedly integration with Google Reader for this purpose, it can tell you if it's already been shared on FF even if they aren't already friends or FOAF, and you can like it there versus creating more instances of the same share.
- Bill Kinney
"School is out in most places and warmer weather has arrived. The sounds of the street are filled with children's laughter and the catchy jingle of the ice cream man. Stop there parents — you won't need to shell out for overpriced and unhealthy treats anymore. Instead, try this cheaper make-at-home cold summer treat, a great way to get healthy fruit into our kids with a little something special. This is a fun project for kids to help with. They will enjoy coming up with interesting ways of decorating their own "popsicle." Who doesn't love an ice cold treat when it's hot outside?"

Because I've ditched Google Reader I have more time to browse Flickr. Also thanks to Ivan's Feed-Buster I can now view my favourite Flickr photographers here: http://friendfeed.com/flickr-... in large format pics. :-) Makes so much difference! :-)
