"Decided to try varnish, the relatively new squid alternative out. Here’s what I have so far. I’m getting about 66% (very limited testing, YMMV) cache hits with this setup but am missing some things for caching Rails sessions and content. With appropriate tuning/configuration, I am sure the hit rate could be much higher. If you have any suggestions, let me know and I will update this."

"As you may know, nginx is a fairly new web server alternative to Apache and rapidly gaining popularity with Rails implementations Starting with Ezra’s nginx config, I noticed that gzip compression was set to be on for all browsers. However, this is incorrect as older versions of IE (before IE SP1) do not properly handle gzip compression. Additionally, with the use of larger javascript and CSS files now, the default config configuration may not be sufficient."

This is really an worth full information for me and thanks for letting me know about the changes in the address locations and versions of gzip files.

If I die of a heart attack because of eating food like this, I want my memorial service slide-show to alternate between images of food like this and images of me with a huge grin on my face. :)

You know how it is when you bite into a dog that's way too big for the bun and it's just so much better because of it? That's these times 20.

Damn you, Josh Haley! Do you think this would work with turkey sausage and faken bacon bits? It's all I got, man! But I need it now!

"The ultimate in visual and structural simplicity, the form of his combined home desk and shelving design by MisoSoup is composed of a single strip of curved wood that wraps up to become as much a work of minimalist wall art as it is a multifunctional work station with useful space-saving storage lofted above."

That looks somewhat like the desks that we used to have in the dorms. Our beds were lofted and we had these metal desks built in to the bedframe. If you replace the overhead bookshelf with a twin lofted bed, you will have exactly what we had. The drawback ... no room for your mouse or actually writing on the desk.

not as interesting on the partly sunny day. I think a vacation in one of those might be nice, but eventually I might feel like I'd gotten locked in the IKEA store.

"This contemporary villa design by Norway architect Todd Saunders of Saunders Architecture is futuristic, fashion-forward and functional, all in one fell swoop. The sleek contemporary villa in Hjellestad, Norway blends traditional Nordic architecture with an innovative edge in what has become a local landmark of modern architecture. The contemporary, white facade is sculptural and dotted with lots of windows which flood interiors with natural light. The structure takes shape in three main volumes, stacked asymmetrically to form architecturally interesting interiors and equally exceptional outdoor living areas designed to withstand the oft-harsh northern climate. Interiors reflect the same modernist sentiment of the exterior, with an open-concept main floor hosting the family room, three children's bedrooms and a play room, an amazing kitchen, the den and the master bedroom, all surrounded by an exterior terrace and stairway leading to the garden below."

"Apple’s sleek $49 Mac keyboards can be hacked and infected with keystroke loggers and impossible-to-detect rootkits, according to a security researcher presenting at this year’s Black Hat/DEFCON conferences. The researcher, known only as “K. Chen,” found a way to reverse engineer and tamper with the keyboard’s firmware upgrade. With the firmware under control, an attacker can subvert the keyboard by embedding malicious code that allows a rootkit to survive a clean re-installation of the host operating system. Chen, from the Georgia Institute of Technology, said malicious code embedded into the firmware would be immune to the typical rootkit detection methods which examine the integrity of the filesystem, check for hooks or direct kernel object manipulation, or detect hardware and/or timing discrepancies due to virtualization in the case of a virtual-machine based rootkit. “Such code could also completely bypass the remote attestation of a Trusted Platform Module, if one were present...

"Spurred by the unlikely success of a factory-turned-art-space in Beijing called 798 and a desire to diversify the economy, cities across China are converting dozens of abandoned factories into art galleries, industrial-chic office space, and entertainment destinations. Many that aren't yet repurposing old industrial sites are drawing up plans – motivated by hope of profits or fear of criticism from higher-ups for failing to follow the latest trends in city development. "China's investing heavily in the knowledge worker writ large, and this has become another part of that investment," says Eugenie Birch, chair of the University of Pennsylvania's Department of City and Regional Planning. "And when China does something, it does it at full force.""

"The Republic of Iceland (en-us-Iceland.ogg /ˈaɪslənd/ (help·info)) (Icelandic: Ísland or Lýðveldið Ísland (names of Iceland); IPA: [ˈislant]), is an island country located in the North Atlantic Ocean.[2] It has a population of about 320,000 and a total area of 103,000 km².[3] Its capital and largest city is Reykjavík. Located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Iceland is volcanically and geologically active on a large scale; this defines the landscape. The interior mainly consists of a plateau characterised by sand fields, mountains and glaciers, while many big glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, Iceland has a temperate climate relative to its latitude and provides a habitable environment and nature."

I would love to go to Fårö, the island above Gotland in Sweden, where Ingmar Bergman used to live. I'm dreaming of it already for 20 years now. But I'm afraid I'm having too much trouble with homesickness (& I also don't dare to fly :-()
- Ton Zijp
Btw: I went to Åland once. Group of islands inbetween Sweden & Finland. 6.500 Islands. I never got further than the harbour because of my never lasting problem with being away from home. But at least I came to realise that the long journey was worth it, although I stayed there for just 2 nights (= 1 full day). I'd love to go back there again.
- Ton Zijp
LOL ... oh hai, Brandon!! ;p .... HAHA ~ I guess you like it then but what a shame because THIS, IS ALL MINE. :D I'll let you visit though, as long as you bring the Ghost Chairs/Barcelona chairs, because I can see the exact place to put them!!! ;)
- Emma
Hahaha, oh hai, Emma :D Notice how I didn't ask about first refusal, I knew I had no chance... lol. And I can only come if I travel 7500Miles with the Ghost/Barcelona chairs, that's so mean. I'll bring the chairs but they'll be on a boat 5 miles out in the sea, you could just undock from your property and retrieve them. heh :P
- Brandon
hahaha ... *smiling* you know you're always welcome, with or without the chairs! ;p Just bring the wine and tiramisu as a compromise instead...k? ;)

Nice house. Everything looks VERY solid. Not to mention the spaces are very large. I like it a lot.

It seems like a long time coming. Nearly two years have past since AppleInsider exclusively reported in September of 2007 that Apple's next big product initiative would be a modern day reincarnation of its beloved-but-defunct Newton MessagePad. And it's believed the device had been slowly evolving as an R&D project for at least a year prior. The 10-inch, 3G-enabled tablet, akin to a jumbo iPod touch, is the latest brainchild of chief executive Steve Jobs. That distinction, as insiders will tell you, carries its share of baggage. Under the critical eye of Jobs, contours must be precise, each pixel of the interface has to match a particular vision, and there can be no fault -- no matter how slight -- or it's back to the drawing board.

Apple is purportedly finalizing its long-rumored tablet for an early 2010 launch. AppleInsider claims to have been tracking the device get bounced back to the drawing board repeatedly over the past few years, but says that Steve Jobs is finally happy with the product and there's an internal go-ahead to get this thing ready for next year, barring any other setbacks. Purported specs include a 10-inch screen, 3G data and a custom ARM processor courtesy of its P.A. Semi purchase -- after previously considering Intel's Atom, as the story goes.

Although the rumors seem to have some serious traction and clues behind them, I still won't believe anything until I see it. Regardless, I'm still not sure if I'd ever buy one. I have my MacBook Pro or iPhone with me at all times; why do I need a tablet?
- Akiva Moskovitz
I think a tablet sounds awesome but like Akiva said, why do we need it. I think it would be neat to play with, but I wouldn't buy one.
- Ryan
I might save for one eventually but I love the portability of my iPod Touch and it does everything I require.

"What is it that exact thing that makes a home worth millions? It’s probably a subjective answer but since we’re here how about taking a look at this small apartment at Kastell Street 13, in Gotheborg’s Linnestaden area. Spectacular views, a mind-blowing interior and magnificent architecture, they’re all crammed in this 65 meter square apartment attic. Aside from its small area, the designer took on a very daring job of redesigning such a small place — and by the looks of it he managed to put a unique interior arrangement and unusual height planning to make the room more dynamic and spacious in its own miraculous way."
