Anything in particular you want to discuss? I played WarHammer when it first came out, but have basically stopped playing completely and switched over to World of Warcraft instead. I just have more friends on WoW.
- Niall Connellan
"I can't believe I didn't write this a year or two ago! I live around the corner from this place and go there every chance I get. They have wonderful house margaritas, however, if you are like me and…"
- Niall Connellan
People who say stupid things are driving me nuts. All you need to do is look at my likes to see how stupid this is.
- Robert Scoble
Is @skonnard speaking in relative terms? Because if he is, then "nobody" is using FriendFeed. And "nobody" is using Twitter either.
- John E. Bredehoft
John:yeah, everyone is on Facebook! :-)
- Robert Scoble
When people say no one is using FF they simply mean FF's numbers are vastly smaller than Twitter or Facebook - there's no denying that.
- Nick Reynolds
So, how are all you nobodies doing today? I'm tired.
- Robert Scoble
Truth to tell, 6+ billion people aren't on Facebook. That gives you perspective.
- John E. Bredehoft
you're doing the first practical form of crowdsource :) pressing play is the fun part of the ff new UI. we will see if it will make also for the chil social lifestreaming we all could use eventually
- Dani Radu
AJ: I get that kind of response over on Twitter. It's just that no one can find all of the comments.
- Robert Scoble
Dani: I +love+ the new realtime UI for single threads.
- Robert Scoble
I am not a nobody. Who is @skonnard - sounds like a nobody if I ever heard of one.
- Brian Sullivan
I'm pretty sure I saw @noone around here earlier...
- Ken Sheppardson
Brian: Skonnard is a programmer at Microsoft.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, FF should be more then a single thread treat ;)
- Dani Radu
@Robert: But that's sort of the point, RT *dialog* not RT "ships passing in the night" is the real benefit of FF.
- AJ Kohn
nobody, one-two-one-two check check. annnnd I have 11 things queued while typing this!!
- Niall Connellan
Dani: have you seen the new DM feature? It freaking ROCKS compared to Twitter.
- Robert Scoble
I'm a social media expert and I use FriendFeed. Here's my card!
- Daniel J. Pritchett
@Robert, no wonder ..coder @msft always belive that 'nobody' use's anything else other then MSN !! Big mistake.. the ivory tower still stand !!
- Peter Dawson
FriendFeed DMs are huge... I wrote up a long post yesterday on how much more powerful they are than contemporary one to one messaging. You thought Twitter was cooler than email, wait til you start DMing three people and copying it to your public feed. You can see a DM turn into a 500 comment public page!
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I'd love for the comment button to be on the bottom of the stream
- Mark Essel
Brian: I know Aaron Skonnard "BB" (Before Blogging). He's cool, I'm just having some fun.
- Robert Scoble
Mark: if you visit the thread's permalink it is.
- Robert Scoble
@Mark - comment button is at the bottom of the stream if you click through to the single post page. Click on the timestamp. Click on it again to see the convo in a little popout.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
ok next question, how do I see all my twitter friends streamed into ff? and keep you guys from having to see it in my public feed?
- Mark Essel
Of course people are using FriendFeed, but let's get real about it. If he's speaking in relative terms, then compared to Twitter (5-10 mill est) and Facebook (200 mill), FriendFeed may look like a niche - very niche - audience.
- Sarah Perez
Wow, look at all the people not using FriendFeed. So sad.
- Carlton Prest
Mark: there's a Twitter import tool, but it will only import them in for people already on friendfeed. Sarah: I know, I'm having some fun.
- Robert Scoble
im just gonna do a UI related comment :) watching this thread, i figured we don't really need our avatar picture in front our posts :) or comments for that matter. its more about what it's shared then who shares it :D
- Dani Radu
Glen: I'm not here. I'm actually in San Antonio sitting with execs at Rackspace.
- Robert Scoble
@Dani - I agree with you in the context of a rapidly growing single-thread conversation, but not in the overall feed where we're getting a wider variety of content thrown at us. I love the avatars.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
O rly. What an idiot. Plenty of people use it. I use it daily without even realizing it since all my accounts on websites are tied to FF. So :P
- Danny Minick
Well if what it takes to be using friendfeed is to be a nobody then that is what i am :) and with some fine company too famous nobodies even ;)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
from fftogo
The internet and websites in general are subject to highs and lows just like everything else in pop culture.Highly popular sites aren't necessarily better just as lesser known/frequented sites aren't necessarily inferior.the population in general flock to "the next big thing" and almost as quickly abandon it with the rest of the fair weather fans.
- Stuart
No one is using FriendFeed in comparison to what its usage will be two years from now.
- Bruce Lewis
I never use FriendFeed. It's such a waste of energy and a time sink.
- Louis Gray
So if everybody is watching the RT feed go by, nobody is really distracted from their actual work ... metaphorically speaking ...
- Rene Wirtz
and I pointed out to Duncan Riley on his recent post http://www.inquisitr.com/21382... slow growth is not a curse. On the other hand exponential growth has been in the early dotcom days, and is now for twitter. Go Friendfeed!
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Nobody here in Bangalore, India, uses it either. "Sorry, Mr. Buchheit, but I really tried to get some of my friends here to sign up!"
- Siddharth Deb
I wonder if opening up the # of users would quell all of these weird anxieties that "nobody is using it..." btw never had that anixety with early Twitter if memory served me right. It wasn't the # of people using it.. just whether the right ones were!
- anna sauce
maybe they mean nobody outside of Scoble's posse is using FF?
- Christian Crumlish
Glen Campbell isn't here. He's in Galveston. Or Wichita (working as a lineman). Or on his way to Phoenix (no telling when he'll get there).
- The Web's Wendell Wittler
By Mass Media Relative Measuring Standards (which are a stupid but common way to measure things), the FriendFeed masses just aren't mass enough.
- The Web's Wendell Wittler
Sometimes it's better to use the service "nobody uses" if it means less strain on the servers and less visits from the Fail Whale. (Is there a FF equivalent? Does it need one?)
- The Web's Wendell Wittler
As Yogi Berra said "Nobody goes there no more. It's too crowded."
- Kevin Leroux
I see lots of marketing folks using FF, not so many technologists. IRC is still the best real time method for communication for morlocks atm.
- Sam Levine
I am nobody waiting for Maryam to pick me up in SFO.
- Robert Scoble
I spend half of my time working on site at a clients place and the other half at home. Sometimes it's hard working from home because it's so easy to get distracted and spend hours online. It's nice to get out every few hours, even if it's just a walk around the block to pick up a cup of coffee or something small like that. It also helps to have a room you only enter when you want to work. Helps to get you in work mode.
- Niall Connellan
Before Sunset is #1, and I'd swap Stardust for Princess Bride (I think Yvaine is a better character than Buttercup), drop Serendipity... never saw LA Story or Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Would add Truly, Madly, Deeply. And Cousins even though Ted Danson's only serviceable in the male role, cause Isabella Rossellini was perfect in it. OK, that's 4; I'll throw in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind to round it out.
- Andrew C
No order: Never Been Kissed...oh wait, I don't really watch romantic comedies. This is going to be hard...10 Things I Hate About You. Does Love & Basketball count? Fine, The Princess Bride. Run Fat Boy Run and yes, I chuckled a bit at Hitch.
- Admiral Anika
chris: true, but still... jacob: i would have guessed your favorite would have cats in it. or at least be a musical. :p
- Maya Baratz
Maya: So what if I sing showtunes while shopping for flasher jackets, that doesn't mean anything!
- Jacob Mullins
Maya, it is weird that so many men aren't doing it right. Looking at you, Thomas Hawk. ;) Anika, good one on The Wedding Singer. Totally forgot that one. When Harry Met Sally and Love Actually are pretty high up there too.
- Matt Cutts
If Alien is a romantic comedy then so is Fight Club and Danny the Dog.
- Jimminy Fuller
I think people are only reading romantic movies. The English Patient was so NOT a comedy. LOL Actually, I can't say that, I turned off the movie 20 min. in, maybe it got funny later.
- Admiral Anika
fyi, so hard for me to pick a romantic comedy. they usually consist of at least 20% crap/filler scenes. And there's no 80/20 rule here. Chris W.: Eternal Sunshine is as much a romantic comedy as Valkyrie.
- Maya Baratz
It's obvious that there's some variation here when it comes to sense of humor. Some folks seem to have completely missed the point of some of our suggestions.
- Ken Sheppardson
If Princess Bride is in the list, then clearly we're not just talking about formulaic romcoms to begin with. Princess Bride was no funnier than most of my list...
- Andrew C
50 First Dates and Juno are the only two I actually own that fit into the romcom genre
- Jimminy Fuller
Anika: I can see 50 First Dates being a little creepy, especially with 10 Second Tom. A few more favorites are A Knight's Tale and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
- Jimminy Fuller
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is a big guilty pleasure of mine (well most of these movies are)
- Joe Pierce
not sure on order, but Princess Bride definitely; +1 to Andrew C's addition of Stardust just because Neil Gaiman is freaking amazing; Sliding Doors as the movie you've most likely never heard of that you should watch in the category; Desk Set for a classic; and The American President.
- Chris Abbey
Secretary, Bridget Jones, Chasing Amy, Pride & Prejudice & While You Were Sleeping.
- Alix Whitmire
No particular order, Notting Hill, Love Actually, Best Man, When Harry Met Sally, 40 Year Old Virgin
- Bryan R. Adams
I definitely would have added "You've Got Mail"
- Damond Nollan
I'd say Princess Bride, Harold & Maude, LA Story, Annie Hall, and The American President. Kevin, don't be embarrassed about 10 Things... it's Taming of the Shrew, right?
- Keith Pelczarski
I like the features they've added. I'm not a fan of the real time feature so just will have it perpetually paused and will refresh like I always did with the old tool. Overall I think it's a good thing.
- Alex Scoble
Not sure I like that removal of the source icons. I cannot quickly identify from where the posts are originating. Before you could see if the content was from a blog, Twitter, Flickr or Delicious. Now it looks like it was passed through a Twitter-izer machine to look like Twitter but in real-time. Functionally though, I like it. This is only a small gripe.
- Rolf Schewe
twitter is much more better than this new style of friendfeed .
- Viva Vida
Just tested out the search: it's pretty cool too. I guess a good search could make it easier to track stuff you might have missed due to it flying past.
- Will Higgins™
twitter is NOT real time - NOT the same.
- Susan Beebe
Actually to me, it looks more like a chat room or MUSH this time around.
- Phil G
Right, Susan. It isn't the same as Twitter, but it sure looks a lot like Twitter now.
- Alex Scoble
If it does then my ejection cord is ready to be pulled.
- Richard A.
Yes, it is in fact pictures of people next to what they typed. It also looks like Facebook, Disqus, Jaiku, and pretty much every other service with, you know, people who type stuff.
- Ken Sheppardson
I know. It's me sharing an item from Scoble, and it says it's me. That's something either that has to get updated, or that we should get used to.
- Louis Gray
My lunch hour has extended beyond the norm... I was fine when I didn't open the beta :)
- Bwana ☠
Bwana - so did your lunch hour become lunch afternoon?! ;)
- Susan Beebe
This is really stupid -- does this mean that we all will have to put up with this real time interface -- no other options? My opinion - I would stop using FF if that were the case.
- Brian Sullivan
not sure I'm gonna like the new FF layout....looks so much like twitter IMHO
- Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
Brian: not sure that paused pages automatically refresh. I'm still getting used to it too. I like it 89% and hate it 11%.
- Robert Scoble
Get the Firefox plug-in, very easy to use
- Dave Hodson
same as new facebook its not the interface its how you use it and utilise it
- Damian Holmes
I'm trying to like it - but this isn't going to get me back to using FF
- Frederic
agree with Damian, but I also believe in the case of FB and now FF they are likely going to need to give users choice on which UI they prefer to play in.
- Patrick Boegel
Does not seem like the new paused interface does periodic refreshes. But I would imagine it's something they could add back on pretty easily. Although personally I refresh manually all the time anyway.
- ronin
Actually, it would be really nice if you could access the pause button from anywhere on the page. Since it moves so fast, it's a little frustrating to have to scroll all the way to the top to pause, then back down to read. Anyone agree?
- Niall Connellan
One thing they're still missing is a "collapse" button. I often open the "more comments" link to see what people are saying but then I have no way to collapse that if I what to move on without refreshing the entire page.
- Kevin Kuphal
In some ways, it's too much like Twitter. I think FF should make an API in such way that people can build their own interfaces on top of the data. I would have gone a different route. I would have made it more like Outlook and Google Reader, and think about "work flow" (as in GTD, etc), not only conversation.
- Meryn Stol
When paused is clicked everywhere the new beta FF has pretty much the same operational feel as the old one. The real time option really was not what I was looking for. I am not sure I agree with those that think real time running should not be the default - new users with a few subscribers might find it works just fine for them. Then as their subscribed number grows, lists or pausing can be discovered.
- Brian Sullivan
I still don't care for the UI visuals but I can live with or ignore them.
- Brian Sullivan
Have to disagree with you on this one.
- Brian Hoffman
If you want to slow things down, click "Filters", give your new filter a name, check "My friends and groups" and click "Save Filter". Then use that filter as your main view. It won't refresh automatically, and you can just reload when you like. (At least it won't refresh automatically for now... that's coming)
- Ken Sheppardson
Yeah, it is almost like a conditioning thing. We were given lists beforehand to prepare for the next release, where here, it is almost required to have lists if you use the real time
- Tyler (Chacha)
Well, the challenge is that when I stop the flow then the queue builds up real fast - I had 83 queued before 30 seconds -- I can do this though - just have to think different about this whole concept.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
Using Twhirl, slows things down nicely...
- Glen Group
from twhirl
It's a little crazy when you post a comment because the moment you submit it, everything that was queued up appears, it's crazy!!
- Niall Connellan
Change, we must never change! The sky is falling. Hey wait this isn't all bad after all.
- gfurry
Are there people with signs in front of the FF HQ? ;)
- Jemm
And it's mostly not in English. What happened to filtering by language? :)
- Rob
I wish they look at all the hard work that's been put into the design before ranting...sure it has a lot of room for growth, but it IS improving...give Bret some time to sleep eh?
- brainno722 (Peter)
I like it, it's cleaner, but a few key features seem to be missing, such as the source icons (that is valuable meta-data for filtering), clear demarcation of Rooms, etc.
- Alex Schleber
I like the real-time comment trickle in, seems like the main feed should pause itself though once you start commenting somewhere. Also, what's with the "pause" button causing a refresh? That NEEDS to be AJAXed, keep the count updates rolling in in the meantime.
- Alex Schleber
they should at least leave some of their nifty old layout.
- Orli Yakuel
jeez took 'em long enough ;) it's been, like hours. Nothing like giving a new toy a try LOL!
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
OK, I admit, I'm a bit of a crankypants about beta this morning...but already forming a room? C'mon. At least I'm willing to wait until it cools down and then try again.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
