Meaning 2.0? (eclair?) I'm actually kinda curious just to hear what the 'f', 'g', etc names will be.

No, I mean the new speedy phones, and the car navigation functionality.

Are you using Android right now? Thinking about getting a Motorola Cliq.

The early reviews I've read on the Droid say some bits are snappier but other aspects still feel a bit laggy. I'm going to speculate wildly that upping the CPU speed can only do so much and the system actually needs to be written to be more responsive, whether than means pre-caching more stuff or managing to display more placeholder data. (ex: the Market app - the "my downloads" list seems to be built dynamically on request rather than being pre-built.)

As Android is designed from the ground up to be functional on feature phones, I'm pretty sure that's not the issue Andrew. Check out the amazing stuff they did with Dalvik so that code can be executed without being copied.

The Droid has a lot more RAM (256MB, compared to the G1's 64MB), which makes a huge difference -- apps stay running, so switching between them is instant. People mostly complain about chunky framerates on a few animations, which have more to do with optimizing those particular renders than systemic slowness. I'm biased, but I think the Droid is a really nice phone.

I dunno, the Magic has 288 MB (vs the otherwise nearly identical MyTouch's 192 MB) and IMO the Magic is pretty laggy.

Well, that's where the CPU comes in. Anyway, give it a try sometime if you get a chance.

I saw the Droid in action in person. It's really good.

I really like it as well (I've only been able to play with others' phones, so I haven't used it really deeply yet). My main complaint is that they appear to still be using software rendering for the home screen and app list, which makes those two parts feel a lot more sluggish than they should. I suspect that when they finally get around to opengl-ifying the entire UI it will be extremely slick.
