This article relates to today's #MB1030 lecture on 'The origins of human cancer' by Prof. Pritchard. It highlights another skin cancer-causing environmental factor: the UV radiation from the sun. The article is focused on the carcinogenic ability of the UV radiation and how it stimulates the activity of the enzyme protein kinase D. The over-activation of the protein kinase D is commonly found in the non-melanoma skin cancer. The researchers are currently investigation the effects of the enzyme inhibition on the cancer regression in hope of developing new cancer drugs.
