But Roberto, if you promise to do it for cheap, they will recognize you doubt your true value. I want to save the company money and still show I can bring worth. :)

Today we're adding a new experiment to Google Labs: Google Fast Flip, accessible at http://fastflip.googlelabs.com Fast Flip is a new reading experience that combines the best elements of print and online articles. Like a print magazine, Fast Flip lets you browse sequentially through bundles of recent news, headlines and popular topics, as well as feeds from individual top publishers.

I like it... Unfortunately we need 300-600-1200 dpi for this to be really usable (like the way I read magazines & newspapers). The type on most of the screen shots is too small for me to read non-headlines on a 15" MacBook Pro (but I can see the pics & get a feel for whether I'd like to click on the article).

Some novelty in news reading. It gives a better feeling while reading news. Waiting to see how it develops.

Sorry… it just doesn’t… You can tell me all about open source and closed systems and every other idea you want to throw at me… but it just plain don’t matter. You bought an Apple product. It might matter: most of us want a seamless experience, the same tools jumping from our home computers to our phones. And as people use voice and video chat to bypass ridiculous phone fees (esp. in the US, we realised recently we pay less to call our brother in law for an hour chat than he paids for a 5 minute call to us. We pay 3p a minute, he pays nearly 2 dollars a minute Crazy!) via...

Wow, seems incredibly feature-packed and polished. View posts based on geotagging or specific services like YouTube? Looks delicious, can't wait to give it a whirl on the train soon.

Sorry for the multi-posts everyone, juggling too much and not paying attention this afternoon. I think I cleaned it all up. That said: Stir is pretty nice so far. Scrolls like butter.
- David Chartier
Hey, i'm the author of Stir. Glad you like it! Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any suggestions or requests :)
- Aaron Brethorst
Please keep us posted on your tests. I've been searching FF to see if anyone was checking it out.
- metalerik
Installed and playing with it now. Really liking this, top work Aaron.
- Keith Bennett
Thanks, Keith! In all seriousness, comments like yours make the four months I spent writing it worthwhile. Also, to everyone who has purchased it: please help me out by leaving a review for it in the AppStore :) Exposing it to more people generates more revenue which lets me spend more time adding new features to it (like support for direct messages, real time support, and so on)
- Aaron Brethorst
What you mean it doesn't do dm or real time??? Well in that case.... Only joking. I'll add a review for the UK store later. In all seriousness, this is a really cool app. It's looking like my default FF app from now on.
- Keith Bennett
thanks again, Keith :) So, the backstory on DM is that this wasn't even supported for third party apps until the release of FF's v2.0 APIs, which only happened a few weeks ago. By then, I was in to final testing of my app, and didn't want to switch over to a new API version or figure out how to shoehorn in a feature I hadn't originally planned on. As far as real-time goes, I spent a lot...

Good to hear mate, always a difficult decision about when to release something I guess. Keep adding those features. Any chance of an option to send something to twitter in the same way you can with the send to facebook?

Also, any chance of setting up a support/feature request group here on FF?
- Keith Bennett
Cheers, will post my requests in there.

Downloading it now. Took a look at the screenshots at the home page, and this looks very promising. Looking forward to testing it soon :)
- Baard @ Pixum
I already have BuddyFeed which is a pretty decent app. I'll be downloading Stir too. I prefer the FriendFeed service to any other Social Networking destination but have to admit that, especially from the point of view of posting, I use Twitter more. The explanation is simple, superb third party iPhone apps, especially TwittelatorPro which is really best of breed. If Twitter wasn't served so well by the likes of TP then I'd hardly use it at all. Best of luck with this new application.

Kudos Aaron. I'm using Stir to post this reply, and I'm really, really liking the app. It's well designed, has pretty much all the FF features (and those it doesn't have look like they'll be coming soon), and it's rock solid. BuddyFeed is good, Stir is way better!
- Brad Brooks
Thanks, Brad. I'm glad you like it. If you have a spare minute, please leave a review on the AppStore :)
- Aaron Brethorst
Awesome, finally another FF app to try! I like BuddyFeed, but it seems like the dev isn't going to update it anymore. That the Stir dev seems active here, fielding questions and requests, is promising. Thanks for posting about it here.
- Cheryl Jones
I've posted a review on the AppStore (UK), Aaron. It should be up soon :)

@Brad: Unless your review gets rejected for objectionable content or something. ;)

@David: Well, you never know with the AppStore reviewers :D
- Brad Brooks
I'm finally starting to use my FriendFeed account now that there is a decent iPhone App available.
- Justin Stevens
Got it yesterday (after reading it here). So far so good. Very good FF client for the iPhone!
- Peter van Teeseling
I've bought buddyfeed, but I still buy stir, it's much better. I like it.
- pastas9
Seems awesome bit buggy. For enchance, everytime I hit load more it just adds the first batch of updates again with no older updates. Way better features and interface than any of the alternatives though! Will try it again later, maybe the FF API was freacking our with it.

from FreshFeed
Whoops, sorry. Works fine on every feed but everything. It doesn't just not add more either, it addsthe same items already loaded below the current items

Chris- can you follow up with me at support@structlab.com? I'd like to better understand what you're seeing.
- Aaron Brethorst
I just downloaded this app. It replaced FreshFeed as my FriendFeed iPhone app.
- Chris Martin
I really like the UI, but so far it has crashed the three times I've tried using it (once while trying to leave a comment). FreshFeed is a bit more stable, but I just left a comment that got truncated (with no warning from the app). :P
- Cheryl Jones
I downloaded it on David's recommendation. It's a nice app. A few UI quirks and areas I would have designed differently, but a generally positive experience.
- Justin Williams
I've been using amigo for the last few months. how does stir stack up against that app?

Cheryl, Justin - please follow up with me at support@structlab.com. I'd like understand what seems quirky in the ui and get to the bottom of those crashes.

I downloaded it, and understandably it's a 1.0 release, but I'm regretting the purchase immediately: the menu system is unintuitive. Just noticed that Reader now allows grouping of people you follow! Wondering: is Reader going to become a competitor (instead of complement) to FriendFeed?

@rogersdc / Chris, Google Reader is obviously been trying to become more social, but I'd really like to see FF come out with a bookmarklet that makes sub'ing RSS feeds to FF easier/faster. MF/Kol = I live in Kingston on Thames. It's OK apart from the traffic (continually gridlocked) and the shops (girls just lurve them). Handy for getting into London both airports and out to the Thames Valley for work type things. Richmond Park and the river in walking distance is great too.

Andy, Richmond Park and the others around there are the appeal really. Good place to go photographing and cycling while being very close to London I think.

Teddington (across the river from Kingston Upon Thames, is where I think I'd like to live. Just 'cos it's cheaper than everywhere else around it. :-)

@Kol many years ago, we made the mistake of asking an estate agent in Surbiton whether it was any cheaper than Kingston. She replied 'No - of course not. We are on the fast line to Waterloo' and looked at us as if we were dog excrement.
- Andy C
I've checked rental prices in the area several times over the last 2 years and Teddington is definitely cheaper. I'm not buying, no way I can afford that. ;-) All a pip-dream anyway, need a steady job and I've not had that for a while. :-(

I can't give this app enough praise...recovered everything from iPhone. (photos, video, music...the lot) . $20 bucks though...but so worth it. - http://ecamm.com/mac...
also, don't forget evernote. You can certainly use it for this function.
- Mike Bracco
yeah, but you know what i've found with evernote...its a pain to mark anything "as read". I have a tag called "must read". That part works great..but when i want to mark it as read but still save it for later - i have to remove the tags and then add other tags etc.. too much pain.
- Zee.
yeah that's true...it's not optimized for this particular use. I would love Evernote to latch on some functionality that was specific to this idea of reading content and marking it after being read. Personally, I like to consume content and then be done with it. I am not the type that feels it necessary to have my reading history saved and archived somewhere.
- Mike Bracco
Yeah, maybe i should get into that frame of mind....
- Zee.
checking out laterloop...forgot about this one
- Zee.
With search as good as it is...i have gradually shifted to my current mentality about information online. instead of collecting it, I just put my faith in google :)
- Mike Bracco
yeah, i tend to do that with bookmarking but for stuff i need to read its difficult
- Zee.
Diigo, because it does social bookmarking too and indexes the contents of each bookmarked page (as opposed to just the title), thus making everything you read (and have yet to read) searchable. Makeuseof did I writeup of them earlier this year
- LANjackal
Read it later, but also evernote and instapaper are good. Consider also Gmail: you can send links and comments (e.g. from Friendfeed or from any website) to your Gmail account, then mark as favourite all of them to read and delete the others
- Roberto
from fftogo
@LANjackal I have understood that Zee ask for an app for people that haven't time to read and bookmarks in realtime each link, but want to park it and add to a bookmark service such Delicious (shared or not) only in a second time
- Roberto
from fftogo
This would be why Diigo just has "Private" & "Unread" checkboxes. In fact, once you go back to the Diigo site itself and open the bookmarked link, it's automatically marked as read. As long as you don't add any other tags to the bookmark you'll never see it again unless you deliberately search for it.

I'm going to put this #laterzheenu tag here coz the guy that uses it could do with checking this thread out ;-)

I use InstaPaper because of iPhone app and Tweetie integration.
- Carlos Granier-Phelps
Feedly has a save button, which stores any viewed item to a separate area for reading later.
- Marlin Forbes
instapaper by FAR....but only if you have an iphone....and pay for the PRO version
- Brandon Blattner
I think the latest Instapaper Pro is better than Read It Later Pro. It has sorting options, auto reading and syncs faster.
- Svartling
Really great for reading saved articles on the iPhone.
- Svartling
Why not use FriendFeed for this "Read Later" bucket? I just tried it out, create a "Standard" Group/Room (like "_Zee's Read Later") that you can then send to with the FF bookmarklet. Then create a "_Read Later" Friend List that will sit on top of your lists, and add the Group to that List's feed. Done. You can hide the items if you no longer need them, share them from there to other...
- Alex Schleber
BTW, for an added benefit, if you post the item to your FriendFeed "Home" feed, as the bookmarklet does by default, some of your subscribers may already read the item for you and comment, doing a bit of work/filtering for you. If it's really supposed to be more close to the vest, you can hit backspace 1 x and post to your "_Zee's Read Later" room only. It could even be made into a private Group/Room if I'm not mistaken and still work, no?
- Alex Schleber
I miss LinkRiver! The ability to import feeds for reading later, like Google Reader starred items or Twitter favorites, was killer. I use InstaPaper now, but I miss having all my items to read later in one place.
- Michael Hocter
my favorite ReaditLater (RIL) feature: - Click to Save mode in Firefox. After turning this mode on you can browse through a web page with many links click the links you want to read later and each will be saved to your ReaditLater list. The feature set is much richer than Instapaper, which I only use now when an iPhone app doesn't support forward to RIL.
- Clyde White
I use Read It Later and it works perfectly for my needs! The Firefox extension is very handy, as Clyde mentioned--and I too, like mrshl, love the Google Reader integration--and the iPhone app is perfect--quick syncing and two different offline modes: offline web view, and offline text view (in which you can change the font size, making for easier reading on the mobile screen). I like Read It Later, but I forget to use it all the time. I like my old system best: When I have a nice amount of tabs open that I know I can't read, I save them as a bookmark folder on my desktop by date via CTRL+SHIFT+D in firefox.

Zee, I am the developer of BuddyFeed. It seems you have a lot of subscriptions and the size of your profile data is 2M. It may take some time to get the information for the first time. You may need to try to keep buddyfeed open for a while to get your profile downloaded. If you still have problems, please let me know.
- Robin Lu
BuddyFeed was decent, but a little underwhelming & buggy when I initially purchased it. But this update takes it prime-time... it's now far superior to using the web interface in Safari. I *do* wish it would allow landscape mode, but that's one of my only remaining complaints.
- Roger Benningfield
I'll try that again: I'm finding BuddyFeed to be a more preferable way of looking at FF than the real-time web UI...
- Brad Brooks
from BuddyFeed
+1 on landscape mode, particularly when viewing actual web pages. Don't know why so few apps seem to support it.
- Grey Drane
And yeah, I've noticed that some of my feeds are taking a while to load first time. On "Likes", for example, I had to tap "Load more" 3-4 times before anything showed up, but most others worked after just 1 or 2 taps.
- Grey Drane
BuddyFeed is good, but I still find it confusing with Rooms, Groups and Lists....
- Baard @ Pixum

- Ms_Krista
Something I haven't been able to discover is, does Buddyfeed support some kind of offline mode? That's one reason I use Nambu during my commute. It will download and cache, and I can still access Friendfeed content when I hit a data dead spot.
- Andy Bold
no, it doesn't, Andy. In fact if you're typing something and click "post" and lose your connection (which happens unacceptably often here in coastal LA with ATT), you will also lose the post.

I suspect that's going to be the pattern with iPhone upgrades. Every other one will be a significant upgrade from the model you currently possess, but each sequential one one will be minor.
- Mark Dodson
I have a feeling you're correct. And I certainly wouldn't mind... Means less cash I have to shell out, plus then I wouldn't be locked into a contract with the same provider for fifty years!
- Josh McConnell
There's already information available about the next update? where?
- Jason Wehmhoener
But won't the upgrade after the next upgrade be even MORE significant?
- Noah Belson
I'm banking mostly on the many new rumored features that Apple is supposed to be working on for the iPhone, some of which was very much expected in this update but ended up not being there. Plus Apple can't release two smaller upgrades in a row. It's like saying "3G... 3G.5... then 3G.7" You'd expect 4G next in that sequence, otherwise Apple will be labeled as greedy or that it's pointless. So there is no doubt in my mind they'll bump it up to the next level; only makes business sense.
- Josh McConnell
Sad thing is, in Canada, Rogers made us sign three year contracts :(
- Simon Tracey
Too right. The reason there is more people moaning is because they are the people who bought the 3g phone, so louder voice. I know someone who paid the top dollar for the first iPhone on O2 and he was raging about not being able to upgrade last year without having to break his contract as well. If people were smart, they'd realise they can change their contract to the cheapest o2 contract, £10 a month and pay the last £60 to get out of it. And take out the new one.
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
But its a contract. You cant just break your contract without buying it out. You can renegoiate with o2 to make your cost cheaper each month. Tell them you've sold the other iPhone and you use a Nokia 3210 nowand only send 1 sms and 1 phone call a month. Then let that contract die out at £10 a month, or buy it out for £10 x 6 months.
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
Surely there isnt a rule saying you cant have more than 2 iPhone contracts at the same time. Stephen Fry has about 39 of them.
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
But Stephen Fry is a multi-millionaire!
- Martin Bryant
Also, I don't think you could negotiate to £10 per month. iPhone contracts include unlimited data so the cheapest you can get is £35 per month.
- Martin Bryant
Nope Martin. Forget the fact its an iPhone. Imagine its a whole other phone. If you check the terms and conditions of that contract it will state that you have the right to lower the value of your contract after halfway. In this case, 9 months. If 9 months have passed, you phone o2, and tell them you want to drop the cost of your contract down to the lowest available tariff. They have to comply with it. I swear, it works.
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
I bought an Iphone 3G from my friend last year after he bought it, and i called O2 who then changed my online contract to an "iPhone" Contract. This March, i called them again and changed the contract to a normal one because i sold the phone on.
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
Don't you have to pay through the teeth for data that way?
- Martin Bryant
Not really. It was essentially the same amount as me adding unlimited data to my current contract i was already on. The only difference was i picked up the free wifi with The Cloud. The only way i can think of people getting out of the contract the quickest way would be to sell your iPhone 3G for at least £200. That money would then cover the cost of buying it out at the current tariff.
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
if someone went and paid the £99 for the 3G phone, in total, with the contract, it would actually cost them £713.57. Sell your current iPhone 3G for around £200-£250. its a much more attractive option for those who want just the 3G phone.
- Giraffes Up In The AIr

This thing will easily replace whatever you're using now for news and ambient awareness. Give it a try. Please. :) http://ax.itunes.apple.com/WebObje...
