Reader Responses to Review of Google’s Nexus One - Pogue’s Posts Blog
"I think I may have accidentally unearthed a whole new untapped population online: the Android Army. Reader feedback about my review of Google’s new cellphone yesterday was unusually voluminous and, in some sectors, vitriolic. Where I had written, “The Nexus One is an excellent app phone, fast and powerful but marred by some glitches,” some readers seemed to read, “You are a pathetic loser, your religion is bogus and your mother wears Army boots.”" - Dan Hsiao from Bookmarklet
"See, veteran tech columnists know one thing very well indeed: If you write anything positive about an Apple product or negative about a Microsoft product, you get buried by hate mail and personal attacks. The only worse result is if you say something negative about an Apple product or positive about a Microsoft product, in which case you get exposed to the true ugliness of the human spirit (and sometimes, in fact, physical threats)." - Tudor Bosman
Microsoft and Apple are both irrelevant ;) - Paul Buchheit
Paul, you should have left out the smiley :) - Tudor Bosman
I like how the first comment to the post is vitriolic. Very apropos. - Mark Trapp
I don't have the time right now Tudor :) - Paul Buchheit
Well that means that Android is also irrelevant, but that's a different thread. - Hayes Haugen

The downward-slanted port panel, however, is not. Everyone please ignore that. :-( - Mark Trapp

That'd be cool if there were an accele—er, orientometer—to detect which side was facing up so the bottom side doesn't get used accidentally. - Mark Trapp
THANK YOU MARK. You have won my love for the day. (In spirit, not corporeally.) - Kevin Fox

Huh. Unless I'm misunderstanding how it works, that looks like it's actually a worse design than the Apple remote I'm using for my Boxee right now (running on an AppleTV). What I really wanted was more control buttons like fast forward, rewind, etc. Now it doesn't have any of that, but at least I can accidentally hit a bunch of buttons on the bottom of the remote while flailing angrily.... more... - Cyrus Lendvay
Two words: Harmony Remote - Ryan Kaisoglus
Nothing can beat the Tivo peanut. Fact. - Otto from iPhone
I love our Harmony remote, but you have to have support built into the software to support it. Harmony remote with an AppleTV (with or without Boxee) doesn't get you any more control than the Apple remote. - Cyrus Lendvay
This makes me want a Harmony - Edgar Rodríguez from iPhone
WOW, nice :) - Susan Beebe
Cyrus - I'm guessing that, since qwerty keys can control actions like fast forward, rewind, etc. within the boxee application itself, many of the keys on the qwerty side of the remote will have double-functionality. I could be completely wrong, though. - Curdy G

International growth has started to completely dominate on FriendFeed since August. Below is an unlabeled graph of page views on FriendFeed this month, broken down by country. Guess which country is the largest green slice below? (Hint: it is not English-speaking)

Turkey?? - Roberto Bonini from iPhone
We are still blocked in Iran - Bret Taylor
Turkey - Cliff Gerrish
Me - Johnny
turkey, imho. - 1Co
Oh and good to see you bret. - Roberto Bonini from iPhone
Turkey is in fact the green slice. Orange is also not English speaking. Guess which country :) - Bret Taylor
Hmm.. Turkey is the biggest international... I am not surprised (: - Ozgur Demir
i totally don't know my FF :( - Marshall Kirkpatrick
Orange - Russia? :) - Count Caturday
FF is rising fast in Turkey I guess. And will probably continue to rise for some time. Celebrities are joining too (: - Hakan Deryal
I am guessing the orange is Canada :P - Johnny
COUNTRY OR CONTINENT?UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.... - Pam Gwenzi
@Brent. is USA one of these countries ? or does chart only show internationals ? - Ozgur Demir
USA is blue. About 23% of our page views now. - Bret Taylor
Does Australia get a slice? - Johnny
@Bret, Can we get more info about Turkey in FF? - Hakan Deryal
India - Hayes Haugen
The orange slice is actually Italy, believe it or not. Turkey and Italy have been growing like gangbusters the past few months. - Bret Taylor
@Bret. yes, your guess is correct (about gangs) (: - Ozgur Demir
I believe it - RAPatton from iPhone

OMG. Friendfeed is going the way of Orkut ;) Btw, is Norway/Scandinavia even visible in all this ? Just curious. - ɯɥøq sɐɯoɥʇ

@Bret, what is the exact number of Turkish people on FF? - Özkan Altuner
Ozkan, I'd be curious to know too, but I have a feeling there's an internal policy about not releasing absolute numbers, hence the percentages. But it never hurts to ask :) - Micah
@Micah, it's the page view, however, not the number of users :) - Özkan Altuner
Good point, Ozkan. But I can't remember Visitor or View counts ever publicly reported before. But today could be the first time! :) - Micah
Iran :-) - Nimaa
Everyone knows teh fuckin answer Bret. It's Turkey. Mahir loves you http://www.ikissyou.org - Ahmet Alp Balkan from iPod
I'm not surprised that Turkey is the green portion. I've seen more and more Turkish posts in my home feed. I thought it was just a biased sample, but perhaps not. - John (bird whisperer)
Iran - Assal
Turkey - Shey
Intense competition between Iran and Turkey occurred :D - Nimaa
Hmmmmmmmmmmm...MOZAMBIQUE luminous orange l guess - Pam Gwenzi
the desire to push the boundaries of internet of the turkish is troubling. the possesive tendecies of the turkish can be observed in the currently popular ''ff bu deYil'' (this is not ff) comment. turks are crowding ff, westerners are in panic! - ferayebach
international growth dominates FF and yet the USA dominates the world. Not always in good ways either. What is the link? I don't think there is one. All I can say is that I love the USA and I love FriendFeed. What does it all mean? More free, cold beer is needed to find the answers. - Morgan
.. because, Turkish Facebook users are 10-20 years old. FF is very good alternative for older users. (and in addition Twitter is non-useful) - Emre M.
Bret would that mean that FF has around 200K Turkish users? http://siteanalytics.compete.com/friendf... - Cem ARGUN
Murat Tatar. So you've seen that Turkish Facebook users demographics ? even though it's unpublished. - Ozgur Demir
SO when are we gonna party BRET? :) - Bahriye

I've noticed a huge increase in Iran, peaking at about 7-8am Eastern - Hollywood Amanda
Just curious, what's happening with total page views? (I don't trust alexa, compete, etc.) - Bruce Lewis
@Bret, 1- Turkey, 2- USA, 3- Italy, 4- India, 5- Japan, 6- Germany, 7- UK & Russia 8 - Pakistan 9- Iran 10- Canada.. Is it True? - Kemalettin Bulamacı

What a great idea! I love the Hollywood Bowl. It was the first place I ever worked. I was 7 at the time, and I worked in a concession stand selling hot dogs, drinks, etc. There was only one problem working so young; I couldn't see above the counter. Fortunately a couple of nice college students who were also working there helped find me a sturdy box to stand on and the problem was solved. I still try to go there whenever I can. iTunes Home Sharing is simply awesome. I'm using it right now to copy/sync all my music to my new laptop and it's working great. It's exactly how I've wanted iTunes to share all along.

How is this different from sharing the library the way it used to work? Or is this more useful for when you want to disconnect the network and still have access to all the music? - Benjamin Golub
Benjamin: exactly. It works like the transfer purchases feature on iPods and iPhones: you don't have to be connected to the home network to play them, because the files are copied to your computer. - Mark Trapp
Wait, you can finally use the songs you buy on more than one computer without having to jump through hoops? My boss would've loved this feature five years ago. Explaining DRM to him was not fun, he just wanted his $1 songs to be playable on all of his PCs. - Daniel J. Pritchett
Ben, the main advantage is that you can set it to automatically sync the libraries so that a copy of new purchases is on both computers. I'm just using it to copy my whole library to a new computer. - Ross Miller
So is it possible for me and my wife to share music, on each of our computers, bought on different accounts, before and after we have gotten married? - Rasmus Lauridsen
Rasmus: I doubt it. This feature, and all the features in the iTunes/iPod/iPhone ecosystem, only allow one active account. - Mark Trapp
and of files you haven't aquired via itunes? - alphaxion
But you can activate more than one account in Itunes... I have mine + my wife's two accounts authorized. But yeah it's probably going to be another case of having to still do it manually - Rasmus Lauridsen
Alphaxion, it just copies them over like any purchases from iTunes. When you open the home sharing center, there's a view to 'only see songs that are not on this computer'. You just select which songs you want to copy and hit import. - Ross Miller
On a related note, something I've been wondering about recently is the best way to share a library between two Windows user accounts on the same machine. Seems silly to sync them when the files are on the same machine, but I'd like new purchases to appear automatically. Is that possible somehow? - Tony Ruscoe from iPhone
Tony, I think you can do that by changing the 'iTunes Media folder location' to be the same destination. Just choose which /Music/iTunes you want to use and set them both to that one. You can change the location from the Advanced tab in Preferences. - Ross Miller
Thanks. I think I'll have to try that. I did wonder about doing that but wasn't sure whether that would just copy the files to the same folder, leaving the libraries out of sync though. - Tony Ruscoe from fftogo

45 drives per unit and many units means they must be constantly replacing failed hard drives - just due to the sheer quantity of them in use - Jacob Old
It wasn't entirely clear to me from the blog post what you have to do to replace a drive. Looks like at minimum you have to remove the unit from the rack, and I don't see any drawer guides or similar to assist with that. And do they have to take the unit offline to replace a single drive? - Jason Wehmhoener

Petabyte schmetabyte. - Rick Cogley
Mitchell: I don't think 1TB was "millions of dollars" in 1998. - Steve de Mena
Nice idea. Pity that it only supports a HTTPS interface, not surprising at that cost though (the software that runs the filesystems on the NetApp and other devices isn't exactly cheap to write). Anyone see if they quoted transfer speeds? I'm wondering what impact the four SATA cards each with SATA multipliers on them has when it comes to access speeds. - Russ
Steve: according to http://www.littletechshoppe.com/ns1625... disk cost ~$0.08 / mb in 1998, which comes out to >$800,000 for 1 TB or just over a million bucks in todays dollars. so maybe not millions, but a million! - Karl Rosaen
Russ: It runs Debian. If you were rolling your own (and they don't sell these units), you could turn on NFS or some other protocol (CIFS, iSCSI). They only use HTTP because it's cloud storage. NFS license is a major expense on NetApp, but all the major Linux distributions can act as NFS servers, CIFS servers, and probably iSCSI targets. - Andy Dustman
Andy: I know that you could do that on them but it leaves the problem of what to do with the storage. You could merge the 3 volumes into an LVM VG but the performance could become an issue with any load on it. It seems I wasn't the only one to question the performance, while the views of a Sun engineer aren't exactly unbiased it does highlight some of the downsides: http://www.c0t0d0s0.org/archive... - Russ
Russ, great find, thanks. - Jason Wehmhoener
Fascinating article; but more questions: "In rough terms, every time one of our customers buys a hard drive, Backblaze needs another hard drive." -- so what happens when a drive fails; how much redundancy is there? What happens when a meteorite destroys the whole building; is there off site backup too? (I know this *is* the off-site backup, but still...) I wonder how much data flows in and out over time. Maybe I should just read their website. - Rob Fisher
Rob: they mention using 15 drive RAID6 volumes that can lose up to 2 drives before failure - Mike Chelen
The worst part about this cluster design is the fact that I couldn’t shut up about it for the first couple days after finding out about it. It was the solution I proposed to every problem. There were complaints. - A Mitchell
IMO RAID6 is not that great. Granted, it's highly unlikely to lose 3 drives at the same time, but there's still possibility. Besides, for write-intensive app, parity calculation is quite time-consuming. I personally prefer RAID 10 (striped array of RAID1 pairs). Yes the effective usable space is less than half total capacity, but for backups -- which will sooner or later be used to restore something -- I prefer data integrity over usage efficiency. - Pandu ● IT Optimizer from fftogo

Ok so I'm shooting ducks here. is that part of the custom pages open to all? - BairdWilliamson
I'm sorry, but this is the lamest thing FF has done (besides sell to Facebook, perhaps). This should not be default, especially when there's a theme that sends a duck flying across pages distracting you from reading them (it's like 1997 all over again). The only upside is that you can turn it off. It's a neat gimmick the first time, but after that it's just lame and becomes a... more... - Tanath
I'm sorry, Tanath, but I 100.000% disagree with you. Don't like it? Turn it off. Me? I love it. - Stephen Mack
Already have - but it shouldn't be default behaviour. - Tanath
Why not? I bet more people love it than hate it. - Stephen Mack
Look, I'm excited that FF is still being worked on too, but this is arguably a step in the wrong direction. There's reasons why MySpace is going down the toilet, and different themes on every page is one of them. I'm inclined to take that bet, just not at this early point because it's mostly die-hard FF addicts that even know of the feature's existence. - Tanath
As long you guys don't f*** with it, I can't see a problem. Why should FF staff avoid a feature only fearing its possible misuse? I'd rather see an option inside FF to explicitly hide user themes, if they get disturbing. - David Schmidt
On or off, I can't see any themes on friendfeed except what I have in my browser's usercontent.css file. It would have been nice to include an "advanced user" feature that could have allowed us to enter in our own custom CSS for designing our own theme, sort of like how LiveJournal allows. That would have not only allowed customizing on friendfeed, it would also fix the problem with... more... - April
David: you can hide other people's themes in your settings (top right of the page) - Bret Taylor
April, that is a good idea. - joey
The Coolest and Creative FriendFeed Theme http://friendfeed.com/yusuph... (http://friendfeed.com/burakdo...) - Yusuf Ibili
Bret: There ya go, you guys are fabulous and amazing. Nothing to complain about here on FF. - David Schmidt
@joey It was something I suggested over a month ago as a one possible solution to a problem I discovered. http://friendfeed.com/friendf... - April
Comparisons to MySpace seem off, since custom themes involve only four possibilities (background image, background color, bar color and box color) -- no widgets, no custom HTML, etc. And first and foremost, they can be switched off. How many times do you visit someone else's page on FF anyway? Most of the time is in your home feed or different lists. I just don't get the negativity, when it's a fun and optional feature that you can opt out from ever seeing again in about two seconds. - Stephen Mack
I don't know if I consider customizing a few basic settings is really a "Theme". - Steve de Mena
The correct analogy is to twitter.com user pages, right? - Stephen Mack
Stephen, that was our thinking internally, though we also give a bit more control with the checkboxes. - Kevin Fox
Forcing themes on others is bad. This needs an opt out. Glad I use custom CSS. - Michael W. May
Michael: It DOES have an opt out. If you don't like it please opt out! Click Settings in upper right, you'll see two prominent check boxes regarding theme display. - Stephen Mack
Kevin: Thanks! You're right, you did twitter one better by letting people opt out of seeing customized themes entirely. - Stephen Mack
Michael, just uncheck the "See other people's themes" checkbox under settings and you won't see anyone else's theme. - Dan Hsiao
Stephen's right. Read Bret's comment further up: "[Y]ou can do that by clicking "Settings" and then un-check the "See other people's themes" checkbox" - Bret Taylor - Micah
i really like this.really really :-) - dwightboozer
If this is any indication of what is to come, congrats :) Absolutely gorgeous! - mySingapore
Thanks to the FF staff, this has been a long awaited request =) Ya'll rock! - FFing Enigma
What's the next? I guess "FF background creator tools" will come out nowadays. :) - Oguz Serdar
To begin with, is "Themes" really a necessary feature? Still, great to see the new features coming. =) - Winston Teo
sytycd = best theme ever! - Jen Liao
Winston: yes. I've been waiting for this for a long time. It lets me put some personality onto my home page and that is, believe it or not, important. Very important for brands, too, if this is going to become a business. - Robert Scoble
love this :) - Edgar Rodríguez
Bret u rock! - orionstarr from iPhone
I had not noticed the steampunk theme. Awesome. - j1m
@Stephen Mack so it does, thanks, and apologies. I shouldn't comment before mocha, I know this. - Michael W. May
It's great ! My new theme : http://friendfeed.com/allford... - All for design
@All for design: Nice theme. Only the blue of the logo sticks out like a sore thumb. - ˈpɛbə
Can you guys stop adding awesome new features, please? Otherwise, no-one else will have a chance to catch up and it'll be an even greater disappointment when it goes. ;) - James Myatt
Check Out My Theme;) - Alper
Is it possible to make the background image resolution neutral... It is spoiling my lulz --> http://www.friendfeed.com/jworthi... - Johnny
I changed my background, but how do I let others see? when I click Bret's page, I still see my own background...I assume this is similar to twitter's custom theme where every user has a different background when their link is clicked. (I'm on friendfeed.com/bret, but still seeing my own background). -edit-Nvm...I guess I have to log out to see it... - brainno722 (Peter)
@Kevin, thanks for removing the borders <3. @Peter he probably doesn't have a theme set for his own profile... - Zulema ⋅ spicy cocoa tart
issue uploading background. hangs on firefox & safari. tile image checkbox is greyed out. - sɹǝɥʇɐǝɟʞɔɐןq
how can i change the font color of "my name"? - Bahriye

Note to self: Don't 'friend' your boss on FB and then bitch about your job.
FB.jpg
El. Oh. El. You gotta be some sort of stupid to friend your boss before your probation period is up. Fired in front of friends and family? PRICELESS. - Anika
She's a f*ing idiot. A similar thing happened to a friend of mine at an ad agency, who accidentally texted "my boss is a fucking cunt" ... to her boss. She didn't get fired or reprimanded, but she freaked out about it. - LANjackal
It floors me how much people openly vent about their jobs on public feeds like FriendFeed. Even if your boss isn't a direct contact, how are people so sure that a boss or co-worker won't stumble across it? - Mike Doeff from iPhone
If I have complaints about work, I try to mask them as much as possible or make them more about me personally than the job itself. At the same time, I really try to stay mum about any job I have.. - Jonathan Hardesty
Mike and how are you so sure that other people don't know who you are talking about? There's a person here on FriendFeed who complains about their coworker. Even though I live in a different city, I know that coworker. - Anika
+1 Anika. I generally refrain from talking bad about my employer/coworkers ANYWHERE online. Even on anonymous accounts. You just never know who might freak out and file an unmasking court order. It's happened before. - LANjackal from IM
Maybe the more general rule that comes into play here is to never say anything about someone you wouldn't tell them to their face. - Ken Sheppardson
Well said Ken. - Benjamin Taylor
What an idiot... When people claim we don't need guidelines for employees using social media, I just have to point out cases of extreme stupidity like this... - Badger Gravling
this is huge! - Loic Le Meur
OH those lessons learned the hard way. - anna sauce
This is great! Don't bite the hand that feeds especially if you're friends on FB. - Gabe Diaz from iPhone
Why friend your boss in the first place, especially if all you do is complain about the job? - Adrian McMillan
Ouch… :P - Daniel Schildt
Well someone has to make room for other people! From the sounds of it, she was probably already canned anyway. - Robert Fisher
Well that was a bit dumb. The thing about social media is it's just so much a part of our lives. We are encouraged to pour our views and feelings into it but we have to remember who is going to be reading it. In the end we have to censor ourselves so as a result our lifestream is a watered down stream. There are no directors cuts. - Parvez Halim
Absolutely priceless! - Robert Couture
Oh and I forgot the LOL. - Parvez Halim
this is something that may occur very often. More than we think! - Rui
@Rui I remember a colleague of mine did a similar thing. Luckily they got away with a written warning and no pay rise for that year. - Parvez Halim
HUGE! - Nathan Guetta
Interestingly, every time I consider complaining about my job via any social media platform, I stop and think "how can I make my job better? how can I improve myself?" and then end up writing about that instead. It has made me a much happier person. Really. - mike fabio
OMG ! this is awesome - Franck Nouyrigat
OUCH! - Retno Nindya
.. and that's why I'm private. I'm pretty good about not talking about work, but never know when I may say something completely stupid - Rodfather
I think there is a serious point here: Your on-line social network pals will be supportive of you regardless of whether you are right or wrong. That's what friends are for, kind of. All the boss does is let in a bit of reality. - sjjh
Maybe she wanted to be fired by her boss? Just questioning... - Torsten Eckert
Splendid. Too bad the story isn't real. OR IS IT...? - Francesco Balducci
I do so love the false sense of anonymity the Internet instills in people. - matthew john ernisse
haha! - orionstarr
Where did you get this? I'm trying to verify that it is actually a real event. Looks too 'perfect' and to generate this much hype I believe it is just two friends that wanted to laugh about how stupid the world is... - Brian J. Reeves
I wondered the same myself. The language suggests it's from the UK - LANjackal from IM
... or somewhere else where the British style of speech dominates - LANjackal from IM
April - you can't imagine how many people e-mailed me screenshots of this :) - Charlie Anzman
I wish I was here in order to press the "Like" button. - Clément Cailly
social media and your boss don't mix well :) - Dave Q

"FriendFeed.com will continue to operate normally for the time being. We're still figuring out our longer-term plans for the product with the Facebook team." Those are NOT encouraging things to read as a FF user. - S of 2C

My heart is sinking as I type this. Please tell me that it isn't a late April Fool's joke. :( - Tyson Key

Congrats, Bret. - Jordan Hofker

This could get exciting, especially concerning twitter :-P - Malte Steckmeister
Congrats for Friendfeed team, but I'm seriously worried for us :((((((((((( - Roberto
Congratulations... I'm sure this is pretty exciting for everyone at FriendFeed... We're all looking forward to where it takes you! - Nathan Chase

Coolest web 2.0 site I've ever seen & used. I hope things don't derail. Ads will be coming soon, which is fine, but.... then what 's next? Please no quizzes! - Ben Hanten
Who would have thought that after Facebook were shamelessly being "inspired" by FriendFeed, the inevitable would have happened? - Tyson Key
Congrats! - Moushumi Kabir
Congrats guys. :) - Meryn Stol
Congratulations. This is awesome for you and for Facebook. - Mike Sego
mommy? - Josh Haley
Hey guys, keep in mind that Facebook is blocked in workplaces across the nation. 250 million casual users commenting about last night's party does not intelligent conversation make. - Hector
yes you have just failed at failing, no it is not a double negative. - Bahriye
Tragic. - Shannon
I really can't see how FB would buy FF only to shut it down. There are way too many innovations and features FF has that FB honestly needs. I'm looking forward. - Harry Wolff
congrats! - Jay from Cadmus
Congrats? Everybody who's saying Congrats doesn't know what he's saying. Go to hell. - zio bonino
Yeah, quizzes are EVIL! - Tarmo Aidantausta
Oh, this does not make me happy. Not at all! I've stayed off of Facebook intentionally and FriendFeed is my favorite social network. This is like when the Red Sox traded Babe Ruth to the Yankees. :>( - Larry Hawes
i have stopped using FB for the most part and liked FF alot more. now FF will go the way of FB. screwed again. - Joe The Sausage
Berge Gazen beat your score in Mafia Wars - Berge Gazen

Bravo Bret! Been following your successes ever since we had the opportunity to work together on the YellowPages.ca / Google Maps Canada deal. Congrats! - Sebastien
I wished it was Google or even Yahoo!, instead... - Tyson Key
i really hope ff stays as it is. fb is kinder carder while ff is a great tool. - jkkmobile
Not sure what to make of this. It could eiter be a big win or a huge fail. - dorn
It could have been Microsoft, which would have been worse for everyone. :( - Tyson Key
Can I take this opportunity to say I HATE facebook? - Alex Scrivener
seems the only ppl happy here are the ones in the biz or who stand to profit from the merger. - Joe The Sausage
I guess we should get ready to get poked by our supposed friends and have various shit thrown at us? Plus 5,000 requests by apps that nearly all suck. - Joey Gibson
duh - aybars badur
I HATE facebook - Pedram
this is simply awful. - Joe The Sausage
Painful. And apparently I completely misunderstood what FF was trying to accomplish both technically and as an organization. I guess Facebook must have dangled a pretty big bag of money in front of them. - Ken Sheppardson
FriendFeed is Dead! Long Live FriendFeed! :/ - Tyson Key
Awesome. Please fix Facebook email :) http://fudge.org/too-muc... - Jay Cuthrell
Facebook is going to acquire the web! - l'Ego di Gigi
To me, FriendFeed is like Porsche and Facebook a Kia. I'm curious to see which will become which.. - Moushumi Kabir
Oh noes! - Burcu Dogan

I will reserve judgement, i don't like or use FB but if FF maintains it's current goodness i don't care who cuts the checks. - SteVe C
I hope this doesn't turn into an APP filled hunk of crap. I love FriendFeed, it was the untouched gem of microblogging. I don't want Mafia Wars invited in my FriendFeed!!! Congrats on the sale though. - Jay 'Farmington'

accipicchia che pessima notizia - massimo mantellini

@Philipp: until the new masters start flexing their muscles and bringing in their own people to enforce their own vision. - Joe The Sausage
I read the blog post and one statement stands out to me "FriendFeed.com will continue to operate normally for the time being." The time being. This is not just bad, I think it may be #FAIL - berchman

FF will surely be integrated into FB at some point? - Kol Tregaskes
damn Ken is spot on! +1000 Ken! - vijay
not good. - Jacque
Oh. My. Gosh. - Enrico Lamperti
Facebook obviously liked FriendFeed a long time ago. Why would they have copied so many features (feed item comments and the "Like" action, to name a couple) otherwise? It was only logical for this to happen eventually. Doesn't mean I like it, but acquisition is part of the game. I have the same feeling I did when SocialThing! was acquired by AOL, though. - dgw
"Relationship Status: It's complicated" comes to mind. ;) - Tyson Key
Wow, I finally sign up, and read this. This could end up being a very bad thing for FF fans: "Your FriendFeed friend just signed up on this poll, would you like to too?" - Brian Bommarito
sad... - Marvin
This will give FriedFeed the attention it deserves. Otherwise it would have been a geek thing forever. - Michael Netsch
aw, this sux!! Congrats to the Friendfeed team though! - acedanger
please don't merge logins!!! please - earlyadopter
They are deceived when they suffer themselves to be drawn after the image of things, without seeking for the true reason of them. - The Complex Days
I hope it works OK to you guys! - Rodrigo Jaroszewski
+1 Netsch - I still like FF more but this finally legitimizes FF to the mainstream. - Daniel J. Pritchett
Friend request una beata fava. Pecunia non olet. - Federico Bolsoman
Yeah, I really can't wait to see what value the Ashton Kutchers and Oprahs of the world have to add to FriendFeed. - Akiva
Please tell me this is a delayed April Fools' Day joke. - Rochelle
Facebook & FriendFeed: don't cross the lifestreams! D:< - CannonGod
I guess this means I'll have toget a facebook account after all.... Hope the API stays up and running.... - Roberto Bonini
"Were rich B!tch!" - Chappelle - adolfo foronda
What a bunch of greedy assholes. - zio bonino
Does this mean that we'll be seeing an influx of webcam spammers, a la Twitter? Along with abolishment of the rooms feature, crappification of the search feature, and more "privacy features" that really just put more nails in the openness coffin? - Tyson Key
Some people will do whatever their friends request........ - Michael Muller
I really don't see why people would be anything but excited about this Facebook freindfeed deal. Great news as far as I am concerned. The Friend feed team is going to go over facebook and make it that much easier to connect, share... isn't that what the social web is about? - Kevin Murray
I know a lot of people who use Facebook and enjoy it and that's fair enough. It's just not my cup of tea. The chaps from Friendfeed will get rich and the technology will get absorbed in Facebook but I can't see Friendfeed continuing in anything like it's present form. - Paul Nash
Don't be so negative, something good might eventually come of this... - Tarmo Aidantausta
Congrats! I know you all must be crazy excited right now. - Michele Lorito-Chase
chance for FriendFeed to become more mainstream... congrats FriendFeed team! - Jeroen De Miranda
Nothing could make me happier than if they integrated the good tools from FriendFeed into Facebook, which is where all my friends are. So a big "yay!" from me. - Ian Betteridge
happy for you guys, but not for all of us - Flavio
congratulations. this is going to be interesting. - Dave Beckett
I think I preferred the non-mainstream version of FriendFeed... - Tyson Key
I'm turning on my black shirt, my black trouser, my black socks, my black shoes. Although I probably must be happy for you. - Ton Zijp

I don't know, Like it? or dislike it? - Ömer Balamir
What happens to all the content that we've created and imported here, and the associated metadata? Will all that disappear into the ether? - Tyson Key
If the FriendFeed guys can make FaceBook useful and responsive again, this seems like a pretty positive step! - Robin Barooah
I have big loss of data concerns. See http://ff.im/6pHjo Is there any way to archive all my FriendFeed posts, likes, comments, and pictures (friendfeed-media.com) off-line? Can some Archive.org-like snapshots of FriendFeed be made (Once a month starting Sept 2009)? I'd like to see the cross-links between my posts & other people's posts, even in 2020. - - Mitchell Tsai
Mitchell: the FriendFeed site is not shutting down. Your data will not go away any time in the near term future - we are committed to our users. - Bret Taylor
I just overheard a coworker mention FriendFeed. This is how the world ends... - CannonGod
Then provide us with a way to easily make a back-up of all of our posts and all of the posts we have Liked and Commented on. - Akiva
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want it to be handed off to Facebook. - zio bonino
Near term future? - Kol Tregaskes
I don't see good things coming from this. Although I like Facebook, I liked Friendfeed more. Partly because of the environment and the smallness of it. That is now going to be ruined. So, 10-1 odds that Friendfeed will be no more within a year after it gets intergrated into Facebook? - Mathew™ aka Youngblood
I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck. - Vicarbott
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want anything to be handed off to Facebook. And I don't want to lose anything. - zio bonino
Congrats obviously, but im not sure about the feeling,, different user groups which can not integrate but collide.. hope there wont be an huge integration in the future. - Yunus Tunak
I'm happy for FriendFeed! But, at the same time a bit worried about the future. Hope you guys convince FB to not be evil too. - Vishal Verma
Let's hope this is like Disney's acquisition of Pixar - wherein the Pixar guys ended up in control of the animation studio... - Robin Barooah from IM
Where the f*ck is this option to undo ? - Laurent
I seriously thought this was a joke. Looks like its not. I don't like it, sorry. - Michael Lynton
Does anyone want to start a bounty to purchase Facebook? ;) - Tyson Key
Congratulations! - John Craft
can't be, shouldn't be... - Kemal Y.
It is! Change is inevitable, my friends. - Bill Sodeman
Jim, I'm less cynical than you - the FriendFeed founders wouldn't do this just in order to become 'talent' at FaceBook. - Robin Barooah
I feel if I should be wearing a black arm band. But I guess when I think about it.............. - Kevin J Hatton
Oh No! I don't like this at all :( - Peter
I still think Apple will acquire Facebook, Twitter Friendfeed and Google Twitter. - Thomas Power
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! - Stephen Francoeur
My condolences to all Friendfeeders! RIP! - Evgeni Leshtanski
AAAAwwwful! - carolh
I can't believe it! damn! facebook tos will apply to friendfeed too? should i start to move to another service? why anyone would think that facebook public is friendfeed public?! damn! friedfeed was my favorite! I can't understand this move! they want to kill friendfeed or what? - paula simoes ☃
"I bet I can find 1.000.0000 people who dislike this deal."...Welcome to FriendBook. - Jacque
Well, huge congraulations to you and your team, you deserve every success. To be honest I had presumed this would happen sooner or later - the only business model cool little startups have is to hope they get bought by someone bigger for their brains and technology. I'm going to be in San Francisco in a couple of weeks and was going to stop by your office to bring you a cake and thank you for a great product - maybe I still will if you're still there and there's still a FriendFeed! - Alex Lomas
damn, damn, damn... - Kemal Y.
"Your data will not go away any time in the near term future - we are committed to our users" There's a bit of a contradiction in your statement, Bret. Nice try though. - JCunwired
Grats Bret and the rest of FF. To all the naysayers... Lets see what happens before we start bitching.... - Rasmus Lauridsen
wow!! dazed and confused!! - Roberto Arancibia
I don't hate Facebook, but for sharing things Friendfeed is MUCH MUCH better! - Mathew™ aka Youngblood
I wonder if that Ben Darnell guy who *just* left the Google reader team knew about this beforehand? Wonder what he's thinking now? (http://friendfeed.com/friendf...) - Daniel J. Pritchett
Just great. I'm certainly not very happy about this. Let's just hope FB doesn't ruin FF. Ugh. - axolote
Who cares? Nothing's gonna change in our pitiful lifes. - bluretina
This ties in nicely with the fact that you soon will have the opportunity to make your Facebook profiles public and get followers there. - Michael Netsch
чатег номер два - старина хэнк
Congrats Bret! this is so great! many congrats!!! - Jason Pollock
That is capitalism for you. Luckely, there still good 'ol usenet. - ˈpɛbə
Is it April 1st somewhere in the universe? - Robert Felty
#ROFLMAO Is there anything more important than money? It seems NOT #ROFLMAO - Lora Lufark
I don't mean to be negative but there's got to be a win-win logic to each merger&acquisiton. Audience high in only quantity is clearly not a win for friendfeed in the long term by considering its unique selling points. Let's wait and see who will benefit from friendfeed's death now. - ayca
Seriously, what is this? It's like Bret just announced that he's killed all your mothers or something. It could turn out good, it could turn out bad, but at the end of the day, who cares, it's just a website (I mean honestly, come on). I could see it going either way, but in the near term, this is a pretty big win for the FF team, so congrats guys. - Chieze Okoye
OMG! - keso
To be honest, my heart sank a little but I am happy to congratulate you and the team for building such a good brand. Well done. - Kevin J Hatton
Wow, I specifically use friendfeed b/c it is not facebook. Sounds great for the friendfeed team, but not necessarily for friendfeed users. - Evan Parker
Born to be sold, like in the old "new economy" era. Remember the late nineties? - Federico Bolsoman
Sudden desire to check out Strands again... but hey, kudos on the incoming $$ for FF team - Leslie Poston
This is wisdom. Bracing for Google Wave is a good idea............. - Kevin J Hatton
this is clearly a talent aquisition... why am i not excited about this? could it be because facebook has been blatantly stealing features from friendfeed shamelessly. Likes were clearly not an original facebook idea...realtime feeds is another i could go on... - Tate
While I'm sad, because I suspect this means the best things about FF will disappear or I'll be forced to use FB in some way, if the buyout was for some awesome amount of money, I can't say I blame 'em for taking an offer -- I would. - Andy Bakun
I came to FriendFeed because I don't like facebook. Now the question is, will facebook become more like friend feed? or will they just take friend feed and turn it into facebook? - Tom Ray
FF could be a good R&D arm for facebook. - Andy Bakun
Fucking morons. FriendFeed is doomed now. Think logically. Facebook has NO REASON to keep FriendFeed alive. It will simply take FF's best features, suck the life of out of it, then trash FF. Way to go, FirnedFeed, damn. - Jeremy Buff
Big Fail! - OnuRC
This announcement should have been held off until the plans for Friendfeed were known. Regardless, this is *bad* for FF users. Best case: it continues on, but with stagnated feature development. Worst case: it's gone. - tollie williams
wtf ?! - Umut Balkan
I need to install "super PUKE" application ! - Bart LePoole
FFail. - rowlikeagirl
I don't want my FF feed on Facebook :( I use both, but maintain both profiles separate - Leandro Ardissone ⍨
Sigh... Happy for the team if this is what they want, but baffled by the move. The users that are going to leave because of this will make FF a graveyard and the users it gains, well... Hello spam? Sorry, but I don't like it. - Vince DeGeorge from iPhone
JEREMY+++++1 - Ahmet Alp Balkan
Wow! - felix
Jeremy +1 - batuhan
so what's next? where should we go? - Flavio
It's been fun here. - Capn' One Eye - adrift
Dang, and just as I was starting to get used to how FF works. FF is useful on it's own. I hope this only improves FF's system, rather than having it disappear into Facebook's wake. - Don Faulkner
My big question to everybody here is this: What are the potential downsides / upsides to this acquisition? I mean on paper I just don't see what the pros OR cons are. I don't care for Facebook but I don't see how them acquiring FF is going to change everything. - Nicholas Kreidberg
furthermore they are 2 different things: I follow a lot of people here that are not in my facebook list, which is for IRL friends! - Flavio
I don't know where to go next either. I had just settled down to make imaginary friends for all my non-FF tweeps, etc. now, I'm not sure if I should bother. - Don Faulkner from IM
I hope friendfeed continues to operate normally but it does not look good. - Ashish
integrate best features of ff to fb, then try to innovate in fb if possible, then kill ff... that's it, cheers, all the best. grrrr... - Kemal Y.
niczak has good points. FF & FB aren't exactly competitors, but they aren't orthogonal either. Let's hope FB's smart enough to see the difference and improve both platforms. - Don Faulkner from IM
Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline. - Ken Sheppardson
first tr.im (heard about it yesterday), now this. I wasn't a heavy tr.im user (yet), but sad to see it go, even if I think url shortening is silly. - Don Faulkner from IM
As FB said they're interested in the people and not in the site, what if the community will keep running FF without its current staff? - Flavio

rutgerblom, I don't expect they do either, thus my angst over this. - Don Faulkner from IM
if there's a team willing to do it and money, and if we accept some ads as everywhere else, we could make a new FF without FB - Flavio
I have worked hard in avoiding signing up for FB. Does this mean I now automatically will be on FB by virtue of my FF account? - Tony Vota from iPhone
I'll have to go with Flavio's position too. Given this news (plus tr.im and who knows who's next), I'd tend to favor community supported or federated services for things like this in the future. - Don Faulkner from IM
I am purposely not on facebook because I don't really want to talk to people I have not talked to in 20 years. - Andy Bakun
Congrat Bret!! :)) - Cihan Cepni
trouble is (from my perspective), that the philosophies of the two platforms are at odds. FB wants to bring people to the site and keep them there, while FF is a hub, bringing people in and then sending them back out. Quote «Taylor and Cox say that the Friendfeed product will live on independently, and eventually Friendfeed will be merged into Facebook. But the Friendfeed team is not being kept whole. Some employees will now report to Cox, others to engineering head Mike Schroepfer. Congrats, FF! I'm approaching the situation with cautious optimism. Helvetica-tized FriendFeed Logotype (and others!)
FriendFeeders, I've been working on incorporating Helvetica Neue into [new] logotypes for the social media sites that I participate in. Consider it an experiment in Helvetica. FriendFeed is one of my favorite...in terms of both communities that I participate in and logotypes that I've created. By the way, I'm not knocking the current logos of any of these companies...and realize that all of my solutions in this series are one-sided (i.e. they did not result from communicating with a client). They're just an expression of my love for places like FriendFeed as well as a way for me to pursue my own artistic endeavors. I hope you like them. Google uncloaks once-secret server | CNET News
"Google's big surprise: each server has its own 12-volt battery to supply power if there's a problem with the main source of electricity. The company also revealed for the first time that since 2005, its data centers have been composed of standard shipping containers--each with 1,160 servers and a power consumption that can reach 250 kilowatts. [...] It may sound geeky, but a number of attendees--the kind of folks who run data centers packed with thousands of servers for a living--were surprised not only by Google's built-in battery approach, but by the fact that the company has kept it secret for years." - Simon from Bookmarklet
Hmm, I was in a Google data center two years ago (not one of their big ones) and it didn't have individual power supplies and didn't have machines in shipping containers. Seems to me that the shipping container would impede heat transfer and would add unnecessary expense. I'm sure they dont use them everywhere. - Robert Scoble
Has CNet been "Scobled"? Site's pretty much toast. - Kenton
Hey Robert, Sun has been doing the shipping containers. Check out http://www.sun.com/product... - Paul Wade
That's pretty darn cool. Hope it's not an April fools joke. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Alex: I wonder. The servers I saw inside Google had Seagate drives. These are Hitachis. But I know that Google refreshes all its machines quite often. This looks real and makes sense. - Robert Scoble
Paul: I know Sun was doing the shipping container thing, but that only makes sense when you need one small data center on premises, or something like that. Building a whole warehouse/data center like that doesn't make any sense. - Robert Scoble
Plus I know they don't just use one brand of drives. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Google has lots of data centers all over the place, though, and I could see Google using a shipping container in some weird location. Just not in its big datacenter up in Oregon. - Robert Scoble
Scoble, MSFT has data centers that are silos for containers. Makes a lot of sense if you think of having to swap in and out huge numbers of machines every 18-24 months. - Aaron deMello
Aaron: wild. I'd love to visit one of those huge data centers and see how they do airflow management. - Robert Scoble
By the way, CNET is down right now (all of CNET, not just the one this article points to). - Robert Scoble
Yeah, I wonder if it's more efficient in the long run to have separate air and power handling for each container. Probably makes it a lot quicker to build up large server farms. Just connect the modules and download the software. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
The shipping container thing could make sense if they were stuffed into a shelving system - open the one end to allow for cooling, plug the whole box full of boxes in, and go. There was one company that was doing prefab hotels in this kind of fashion. build shell, and stuff pre-fab rooms in the slots. Do the datacenter the same way. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Yeah, CNET is having problems but it seems to be intermittent. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Like giant Drobos :-) - Tim Ostler
The most interesting thing to me is the shipping container concept. That's the future model of efficiency. Portable data centers that you can drop anywhere you need 'em. - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Robert, each of the large vendors has their own solution to airflow management. Take a look at what Rackable and Verari are doing, quite interesting. Verari's are actually portable and designed to work outdoors. - Aaron deMello
With these sorts of cooling requirements you'd think they'd bury the shipping containers 20 feet underground or in old coal mines or something. - Andrew Leyden
The one thing I can tell you is that no Google employee will go near commenting on something like this. It is made *very* clear that anything touching datacenters is super-uber confidential. - Joe Beda
I think it's a very smart design on Google's part. Years ago, when I worked in the Sprint's Central Offices the telecom battery backups were hideously large and only used when the diesel generators failed. Matter of fact, I think many of those beer keg size batteries were decades old. - Donna Payne
This "secret server" was revealed in 2006 (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/archive...). I personally looked at the power cable coming out the back of the power supply, being routed back *in* the case, *under* the mobo and out through the front, and had a Luke Skywalker reaction: "What a piece of junk!" Which I suppose is the cue for Han Solo to walk out of the... more... - Karim
my favorite quote from that 2006 article: " he said that in his first week working [at Google] they flew anyone who wanted to go, to denver to go skiing.... during the work week too ahaha" soooo it's like "super-efficient data centers, scrimping and saving every penny OMG DID SOMEONE SAY SKIING? FIRE UP THE PARTY PLANE!!!" :-D - Karim
Ok, so how many of you are now trying to build one of these at home? That would be a good MAKE episode. - Andrew Leyden
I bet all those $15 batteries would be a maintenance nightmare in a typical datacenter. - Gabe
The article has been updated with additional photos and details: "Google's PUE [Power Usage Effectiveness] scores are enviably low, but the company is working to lower them further. [...] "[From] early on, there was an emphasis on the dollar per (search) query," Hoelzle said. "We were forced to focus. Revenue per query is very low."" - Simon

In @ev's column in the New York Times, only 1 of his sentences is more than 140 characters. 2 are exactly 140. http://www.nytimes.com/2009...

Welcome to the World Milan William Scoble, 8
I met Robert at last year's IFA in Berlin for a short walk around the show floor. He's great guy and I wish him and his new venture all the best. And I agree that he should get back together with Rocky. I don't think they are done with their work yet... - Holger Eilhard
Robert has a long history of personal resiliency, so I am thinking that this is just a minor setback. I too want to wish him well. - Brian Sullivan
M, forwarding .. - Daniele Beta
Brian, I don't think of this as a setback for him at all. I think of this as a new and better opportunity for him. Like a lot of magazines Fast Company I'm sure was hit hard in this recent downturn. Robert needs certain things to thrive best. Rocky was a first rate editor. Robert's time is best spent doing what he does which is out and about interviewing people and having someone like Rocky to edit his stuff was important. Robert will do better someplace that is growing rather than cutting back. - Thomas Hawk
Robert you might want to tuck that away for your eulogy. Quite a tribute. - Todd Hoff

Great post Thomas! - Kenton
That was a great summary of Scoble. I'm sure his next adventure will be something to watch. - Jeremy Brooks
The sentiment here about Robert (and folks like TH too) are right on - the level of transparency, integrity and work ethic we see sets the bar high for leaders in a community (a network of micro communities, as it might be put better). Think about Paul Harvey. An endearing, tireless pioneer who reached his community with the media/technology of his day for 70+ years. Scobleizer's journey, I believe, has just begun. - Micah
more time to spend with the Sean McBrides of the world. lucky "fast company" to be rid of a man and his destructive politics. - NoahDavidSimon

Fabulous post Thomas!! WOW!!!!!!! Lovely, moving and very well documented. Robert is an amazingly passionate, intelligent, smart and uber-technical guy that really has an astounding work ethic that never fails to deliver value in everything he does!! - you captured that very well with this blog post. :) Personally, I -like you- think he should link up with Friendfeed. that would be a PERFECT fit and a complete win-win relationship; however, I'd be concerned that FF might be too small for him. - Susan Beebe
