Huh. Unless I'm misunderstanding how it works, that looks like it's actually a worse design than the Apple remote I'm using for my Boxee right now (running on an AppleTV). What I really wanted was more control buttons like fast forward, rewind, etc. Now it doesn't have any of that, but at least I can accidentally hit a bunch of buttons on the bottom of the remote while flailing angrily....

I love our Harmony remote, but you have to have support built into the software to support it. Harmony remote with an AppleTV (with or without Boxee) doesn't get you any more control than the Apple remote.

Cyrus - I'm guessing that, since qwerty keys can control actions like fast forward, rewind, etc. within the boxee application itself, many of the keys on the qwerty side of the remote will have double-functionality. I could be completely wrong, though.

What a great idea! I love the Hollywood Bowl. It was the first place I ever worked. I was 7 at the time, and I worked in a concession stand selling hot dogs, drinks, etc. There was only one problem working so young; I couldn't see above the counter. Fortunately a couple of nice college students who were also working there helped find me a sturdy box to stand on and the problem was solved. I still try to go there whenever I can. Good memories!

Benjamin: exactly. It works like the transfer purchases feature on iPods and iPhones: you don't have to be connected to the home network to play them, because the files are copied to your computer.

Ben, the main advantage is that you can set it to automatically sync the libraries so that a copy of new purchases is on both computers. I'm just using it to copy my whole library to a new computer.

Alphaxion, it just copies them over like any purchases from iTunes. When you open the home sharing center, there's a view to 'only see songs that are not on this computer'. You just select which songs you want to copy and hit import.

On a related note, something I've been wondering about recently is the best way to share a library between two Windows user accounts on the same machine. Seems silly to sync them when the files are on the same machine, but I'd like new purchases to appear automatically. Is that possible somehow?

Tony, I think you can do that by changing the 'iTunes Media folder location' to be the same destination. Just choose which /Music/iTunes you want to use and set them both to that one. You can change the location from the Advanced tab in Preferences.

45 drives per unit and many units means they must be constantly replacing failed hard drives - just due to the sheer quantity of them in use

It wasn't entirely clear to me from the blog post what you have to do to replace a drive. Looks like at minimum you have to remove the unit from the rack, and I don't see any drawer guides or similar to assist with that. And do they have to take the unit offline to replace a single drive?

Nice idea. Pity that it only supports a HTTPS interface, not surprising at that cost though (the software that runs the filesystems on the NetApp and other devices isn't exactly cheap to write). Anyone see if they quoted transfer speeds? I'm wondering what impact the four SATA cards each with SATA multipliers on them has when it comes to access speeds.

Russ: It runs Debian. If you were rolling your own (and they don't sell these units), you could turn on NFS or some other protocol (CIFS, iSCSI). They only use HTTP because it's cloud storage. NFS license is a major expense on NetApp, but all the major Linux distributions can act as NFS servers, CIFS servers, and probably iSCSI targets.

Andy: I know that you could do that on them but it leaves the problem of what to do with the storage. You could merge the 3 volumes into an LVM VG but the performance could become an issue with any load on it. Fascinating article; but more questions: "In rough terms, every time one of our customers buys a hard drive, Backblaze needs another hard drive." -- so what happens when a drive fails; how much redundancy is there? What happens when a meteorite destroys the whole building; is there off site backup too? (I know this *is* the off-site backup, but still...) I wonder how much data flows in and out over time. Maybe I should just read their website.

Look, I'm excited that FF is still being worked on too, but this is arguably a step in the wrong direction. There's reasons why MySpace is going down the toilet, and different themes on every page is one of them. I'm inclined to take that bet, just not at this early point because it's mostly die-hard FF addicts that even know of the feature's existence.

Comparisons to MySpace seem off, since custom themes involve only four possibilities (background image, background color, bar color and box color) -- no widgets, no custom HTML, etc. And first and foremost, they can be switched off. How many times do you visit someone else's page on FF anyway? Most of the time is in your home feed or different lists. I just don't get the negativity, when it's a fun and optional feature that you can opt out from ever seeing again in about two seconds.

We are encouraged to pour our views and feelings into it but we have to remember who is going to be reading it. I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck.

Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline.

trouble is (from my perspective), that the philosophies of the two platforms are at odds. FB wants to bring people to the site and keep them there, while FF is a hub, bringing people in and then sending them back out. (That's part of why it's hard for the newcomer to understand, IMHO.)

Congrats, FF! I'm approaching the situation with cautious optimism. A lot of my friends only share stuff via the Facebook wall/feed, so if Facebook is able to make their feed more like the FF feed (i.e. good, instead of sucktacular) through this acquisition, it's mostly a win for me in the end.

Awful news for users but congratulations to you guys. Ideally, FB will run FF as a distinct service but I'm not hopeful. I don't want the diversity and noise that facebook brings - people doing quizzes on which movie star they resemble and playing silly games. I also wanted to keep my day to day social activity distinct from the targeted information and discussion I use FF for.

While I'm happy for the FF team, since I guess this is what they wanted (congrats guys!), I can't help but think this is the beginning of the end for a great service and a vibrant community. Google must jump for twitter while MS fiddle in the sticks with Yahoo. BillG will be back at the MS helm 2012.

Just finished setting up my lifestream.fm at http://lifestream.fm/dfaulkner. Lifestream does what it says, and no more. FF's search blows lifestream away. FF is more flexible about adding source feeds, but lifestream does fine without the flexibility I suppose. FF still wins, or would, if I thought it would be sticking around. :P

I also hate facebook, not because of their silly quizzes and pokes, but because I suspect they would like to maintain massive user base as the determining factor in choosing a social network. I would love to switch to orkut as I use so many other google services, but I can't because nobody else does. That should not be my criteria.... FriendFeeders, I've been working on incorporating Helvetica Neue into [new] logotypes for the social media sites that I participate in. Consider it an experiment in Helvetica. FriendFeed is one of my favorite...in terms of both communities that I participate in and logotypes that I've created. By the way, I'm not knocking the current logos of any of these companies...and realize that all of my solutions in this series are one-sided (i.e. they did not result from communicating with a client). They're just an expression of my love for places like FriendFeed as well as a way for me to pursue my own artistic endeavors. I hope you like them. Hmm, I was in a Google data center two years ago (not one of their big ones) and it didn't have individual power supplies and didn't have machines in shipping containers. Seems to me that the shipping container would impede heat transfer and would add unnecessary expense. I'm sure they dont use them everywhere.

Yeah, I wonder if it's more efficient in the long run to have separate air and power handling for each container. Probably makes it a lot quicker to build up large server farms. Just connect the modules and download the software.

The shipping container thing could make sense if they were stuffed into a shelving system - open the one end to allow for cooling, plug the whole box full of boxes in, and go. There was one company that was doing prefab hotels in this kind of fashion. build shell, and stuff pre-fab rooms in the slots. Do the datacenter the same way.

Robert, each of the large vendors has their own solution to airflow management. Take a look at what Rackable and Verari are doing, quite interesting. Verari's are actually portable and designed to work outdoors.

I think it's a very smart design on Google's part. Years ago, when I worked in the Sprint's Central Offices the telecom battery backups were hideously large and only used when the diesel generators failed. Matter of fact, I think many of those beer keg size batteries were decades old.

I met Robert at last year's IFA in Berlin for a short walk around the show floor. He's great guy and I wish him and his new venture all the best. And I agree that he should get back together with Rocky. I don't think they are done with their work yet...

Brian, I don't think of this as a setback for him at all. I think of this as a new and better opportunity for him. Like a lot of magazines Fast Company I'm sure was hit hard in this recent downturn. Robert needs certain things to thrive best. Rocky was a first rate editor. Robert's time is best spent doing what he does which is out and about interviewing people and having someone like Rocky to edit his stuff was important. Robert will do better someplace that is growing rather than cutting back.

The sentiment here about Robert (and folks like TH too) are right on - the level of transparency, integrity and work ethic we see sets the bar high for leaders in a community (a network of micro communities, as it might be put better). Think about Paul Harvey. An endearing, tireless pioneer who reached his community with the media/technology of his day for 70+ years. Scobleizer's journey, I believe, has just begun.
