International growth has started to completely dominate on FriendFeed since August. Below is an unlabeled graph of page views on FriendFeed this month, broken down by country. Guess which country is the largest green slice below? (Hint: it is not English-speaking)
where other is proxied users from Iran. ;)
- EricaJoy
If we were not blocked , we would win a big slice for iran :(
- Milad.p
from FreshFeed
Both China and Iran would have been in there if they were not both blocked currently
- Bret Taylor
Is Russia any of the other slices pictured above? (other than gray)
- Itachi
That's where Australia is, in the grey :)
- Glenn Slaven
OMG. Friendfeed is going the way of Orkut ;) Btw, is Norway/Scandinavia even visible in all this ? Just curious.
- Thomas Bøhm
@thomas. even though Orkut is Turkish (the guy), it is (site) not big in Turkey.
- Ozgur Demir
i'm sure finland is forbidden long time ago from this list ;)
- Nia

Just look at the public feed for 2 secs or 2 hours - yep, definitely.
- Micah Wittman

Facebook has a very similar story as far as I know.. we are a communicative nation:)
- Neşe Uyanık
Who's Gray? It's Gray, Louis of course :)
- Micah Wittman
Thank you for sharing this graph, Bret.
- Micah Wittman
Interesting - though for the sake of data visualization, pie charts are the worst of all.... :)
- See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
See-ming, a-hem, take a look at your avatar ;)
- Micah Wittman
@Bret, what is the exact number of Turkish people on FF?
- Ozkan Altuner
Ozkan, I'd be curious to know too, but I have a feeling there's an internal policy about not releasing absolute numbers, hence the percentages. But it never hurts to ask :)
- Micah Wittman
@Micah, it's the page view, however, not the number of users :)
- Ozkan Altuner
Good point, Ozkan. But I can't remember Visitor or View counts ever publicly reported before. But today could be the first time! :)
- Micah Wittman
I'm not surprised that Turkey is the green portion. I've seen more and more Turkish posts in my home feed. I thought it was just a biased sample, but perhaps not.
- John (a.k.a. dendroica)
Intense competition between Iran and Turkey occurred :D
- Nimaa
Hmmmmmmmmmmm...MOZAMBIQUE luminous orange l guess
- Pam Gwenzi
the desire to push the boundaries of internet of the turkish is troubling. the possesive tendecies of the turkish can be observed in the currently popular ''ff bu deYil'' (this is not ff) comment. turks are crowding ff, westerners are in panic!
- ferayebend
international growth dominates FF and yet the USA dominates the world. Not always in good ways either. What is the link? I don't think there is one. All I can say is that I love the USA and I love FriendFeed. What does it all mean? More free, cold beer is needed to find the answers.
- Morgan Haley
.. because, Turkish Facebook users are 10-20 years old. FF is very good alternative for older users. (and in addition Twitter is non-useful)
- Murat Tatar
If that is so, can we get some way of filtering by language? I want to follow more international people but be able to ignore them or their friends when they post in what I cannot read :)
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
""Meb's fellow competitors voiced their doubts about him immediately after the event," NYRR president Mary Wittenberg said. "In addition to his remarkable speed, unusual race-day height, and distinctive 'clip-clop' gait, Keflezighi's frequent nickering caused the other runners to speculate that he may have been using a horse in some fashion." Added Wittenberg, "Also, just before the start, he lifted up his tail and loudly deposited a 9-inch-high pile of steaming fecal matter on the pavement, an unusual occurrence even in the world of long-distance running.""

Awesome. But, er, I am reminded of that article I saw on FF just a while ago about how humans are particularly well-suited to long-distance running... </nerd>
- Andrew C
Yes, horses won't win a marathon. They are great sprinters, but can't run for 26 miles.

Er, 9-inch-high pile of fecal matter? Why did they measure the height? :)

What a great idea! I love the Hollywood Bowl. It was the first place I ever worked. I was 7 at the time, and I worked in a concession stand selling hot dogs, drinks, etc. There was only one problem working so young; I couldn't see above the counter. Fortunately a couple of nice college students who were also working there helped find me a sturdy box to stand on and the problem was solved. I still try to go there whenever I can. Good memories!

A long time ago, Memeorandum would aggregate political blogs from both sides and run them in two columns. I gave up on that site pretty much right away, but a quick check now shows they've since switched styles.

You might be thinking of eastwest.nu, which was written circa 2001 - 2003 by Choire Sicha and a friend of his, Philo Hagen: two blogs on the same homepage, one written on the east coast and one on the west.

iTunes Home Sharing is simply awesome. I'm using it right now to copy/sync all my music to my new laptop and it's working great. It's exactly how I've wanted iTunes to share all along.
How is this different from sharing the library the way it used to work? Or is this more useful for when you want to disconnect the network and still have access to all the music?
- Benjamin Golub
Benjamin: exactly. It works like the transfer purchases feature on iPods and iPhones: you don't have to be connected to the home network to play them, because the files are copied to your computer.
- Mark Trapp
Wait, you can finally use the songs you buy on more than one computer without having to jump through hoops? My boss would've loved this feature five years ago. Explaining DRM to him was not fun, he just wanted his $1 songs to be playable on all of his PCs.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Ben, the main advantage is that you can set it to automatically sync the libraries so that a copy of new purchases is on both computers. I'm just using it to copy my whole library to a new computer.
- Ross Miller
So is it possible for me and my wife to share music, on each of our computers, bought on different accounts, before and after we have gotten married?
- Rasmus Lauridsen
Rasmus: I doubt it. This feature, and all the features in the iTunes/iPod/iPhone ecosystem, only allow one active account.
- Mark Trapp
and of files you haven't aquired via itunes?
- alphaxion
But you can activate more than one account in Itunes... I have mine + my wife's two accounts authorized. But yeah it's probably going to be another case of having to still do it manually
- Rasmus Lauridsen
Alphaxion, it just copies them over like any purchases from iTunes. When you open the home sharing center, there's a view to 'only see songs that are not on this computer'. You just select which songs you want to copy and hit import.
- Ross Miller
On a related note, something I've been wondering about recently is the best way to share a library between two Windows user accounts on the same machine. Seems silly to sync them when the files are on the same machine, but I'd like new purchases to appear automatically. Is that possible somehow?
- Tony Ruscoe
from iPhone
Tony, I think you can do that by changing the 'iTunes Media folder location' to be the same destination. Just choose which /Music/iTunes you want to use and set them both to that one. You can change the location from the Advanced tab in Preferences.
- Ross Miller
Thanks. I think I'll have to try that. I did wonder about doing that but wasn't sure whether that would just copy the files to the same folder, leaving the libraries out of sync though.

Amazing level of transparency and detail about their custom storage servers. HN discussion at http://news.ycombinator.com/item... (discusses why this is appropriate for backup, but perhaps not generic storage needs)
- Bret Taylor
from Bookmarklet
45 drives per unit and many units means they must be constantly replacing failed hard drives - just due to the sheer quantity of them in use
- Jacob Old
It wasn't entirely clear to me from the blog post what you have to do to replace a drive. Looks like at minimum you have to remove the unit from the rack, and I don't see any drawer guides or similar to assist with that. And do they have to take the unit offline to replace a single drive?
- Jason Wehmhoener
Geez. Back in 1998, Microsoft was bragging about their 1 TB cloud... :-) Millions of $ then I think.
- Mitchell Tsai
One happy Backblaze customer checking in.
- Russellreno
sounds neat - now what to do with 67 TB of storage...
- Matt Ellsworth
Seriously Matt! Lots and Lots and Lots of video? HD video!
- Rick Cogley
So, they store their data "securely" in Palo Alto? That makes me scared.
- Jonas S Karlsson
Quoted from blog- "Backblaze Storage Pods are building blocks upon which a larger system can be organized that doesn’t allow for a single point of failure." They have indicated an amazing amount of cost savings.
- Wins Fern
Mitchell: I don't think 1TB was "millions of dollars" in 1998.
- Steve de Mena
Nice idea. Pity that it only supports a HTTPS interface, not surprising at that cost though (the software that runs the filesystems on the NetApp and other devices isn't exactly cheap to write). Anyone see if they quoted transfer speeds? I'm wondering what impact the four SATA cards each with SATA multipliers on them has when it comes to access speeds.
- Russ
Steve: according to http://www.littletechshoppe.com/ns1625... disk cost ~$0.08 / mb in 1998, which comes out to >$800,000 for 1 TB or just over a million bucks in todays dollars. so maybe not millions, but a million!
- Karl Rosaen
Russ: It runs Debian. If you were rolling your own (and they don't sell these units), you could turn on NFS or some other protocol (CIFS, iSCSI). They only use HTTP because it's cloud storage. NFS license is a major expense on NetApp, but all the major Linux distributions can act as NFS servers, CIFS servers, and probably iSCSI targets.
- Andy Dustman
Andy: I know that you could do that on them but it leaves the problem of what to do with the storage. You could merge the 3 volumes into an LVM VG but the performance could become an issue with any load on it. It seems I wasn't the only one to question the performance, while the views of a Sun engineer aren't exactly unbiased it does highlight some of the downsides: http://www.c0t0d0s0.org/archive...
- Russ
Fascinating article; but more questions: "In rough terms, every time one of our customers buys a hard drive, Backblaze needs another hard drive." -- so what happens when a drive fails; how much redundancy is there? What happens when a meteorite destroys the whole building; is there off site backup too? (I know this *is* the off-site backup, but still...) I wonder how much data flows in and out over time. Maybe I should just read their website.
- Rob Fisher
Rob: they mention using 15 drive RAID6 volumes that can lose up to 2 drives before failure
- Mike Chelen
The worst part about this cluster design is the fact that I couldn’t shut up about it for the first couple days after finding out about it. It was the solution I proposed to every problem. There were complaints.
- A Mitchell
IMO RAID6 is not that great. Granted, it's highly unlikely to lose 3 drives at the same time, but there's still possibility. Besides, for write-intensive app, parity calculation is quite time-consuming. I personally prefer RAID 10 (striped array of RAID1 pairs). Yes the effective usable space is less than half total capacity, but for backups -- which will sooner or later be used to restore something -- I prefer data integrity over usage efficiency.

Fwd: I made a small journey through FF-sphere. Just to see what other people did theme-wise. Whether they had wanted to be original or liked it more the way it was. So I jumped from 1 account to another by going to the 1st person that had liked or commented on an entry. Does it say anything? Do you have a theme that's especially YOU? (via...
I'm too lazy to figure out how to make my own background. Plus I don't know how to use photo editing software well enough to create something left-justified. So I just stick with the default.

But what if I don't want to see other people's themes? There's a reason I avoid doing that on Twitter. Can we make our theme the default at all times?
- Admiral Anika
ah, I figured as much there would be a setting, thanks Kevin! :P
- Tim Hoeck
Thank you, LE. It wouldn't have killed me to check that first, but I'm super tired.

Robert: If you change your theme's background color to black (even though it won't display because of hte tiling) the links will turn white.

Ok so I'm shooting ducks here. is that part of the custom pages open to all?

I'm sorry, but this is the lamest thing FF has done (besides sell to Facebook, perhaps). This should not be default, especially when there's a theme that sends a duck flying across pages distracting you from reading them (it's like 1997 all over again). The only upside is that you can turn it off. It's a neat gimmick the first time, but after that it's just lame and becomes a...

Why not? I bet more people love it than hate it.
- Stephen Mack
Look, I'm excited that FF is still being worked on too, but this is arguably a step in the wrong direction. There's reasons why MySpace is going down the toilet, and different themes on every page is one of them. I'm inclined to take that bet, just not at this early point because it's mostly die-hard FF addicts that even know of the feature's existence.
- Tanath
As long you guys don't f*** with it, I can't see a problem. Why should FF staff avoid a feature only fearing its possible misuse? I'd rather see an option inside FF to explicitly hide user themes, if they get disturbing.
- David Schmidt
On or off, I can't see any themes on friendfeed except what I have in my browser's usercontent.css file. It would have been nice to include an "advanced user" feature that could have allowed us to enter in our own custom CSS for designing our own theme, sort of like how LiveJournal allows. That would have not only allowed customizing on friendfeed, it would also fix the problem with...

David: you can hide other people's themes in your settings (top right of the page)
- Bret Taylor
Comparisons to MySpace seem off, since custom themes involve only four possibilities (background image, background color, bar color and box color) -- no widgets, no custom HTML, etc. And first and foremost, they can be switched off. How many times do you visit someone else's page on FF anyway? Most of the time is in your home feed or different lists. I just don't get the negativity, when it's a fun and optional feature that you can opt out from ever seeing again in about two seconds.
- Stephen Mack
I don't know if I consider customizing a few basic settings is really a "Theme".
- Steve de Mena
The correct analogy is to twitter.com user pages, right?
- Stephen Mack
Stephen, that was our thinking internally, though we also give a bit more control with the checkboxes.
- Kevin Fox
Forcing themes on others is bad. This needs an opt out. Glad I use custom CSS.
- Michael W. May
Michael: It DOES have an opt out. If you don't like it please opt out! Click Settings in upper right, you'll see two prominent check boxes regarding theme display.
- Stephen Mack
Kevin: Thanks! You're right, you did twitter one better by letting people opt out of seeing customized themes entirely.
- Stephen Mack
Michael, just uncheck the "See other people's themes" checkbox under settings and you won't see anyone else's theme.
- Dan Hsiao
Stephen's right. Read Bret's comment further up: "[Y]ou can do that by clicking "Settings" and then un-check the "See other people's themes" checkbox" - Bret Taylor

What's the next? I guess "FF background creator tools" will come out nowadays. :)
- Oğuz Serdar
To begin with, is "Themes" really a necessary feature? Still, great to see the new features coming. =)
- Winston Teo
Winston: yes. I've been waiting for this for a long time. It lets me put some personality onto my home page and that is, believe it or not, important. Very important for brands, too, if this is going to become a business.
- Robert Scoble
@All for design: Nice theme. Only the blue of the logo sticks out like a sore thumb.

Can you guys stop adding awesome new features, please? Otherwise, no-one else will have a chance to catch up and it'll be an even greater disappointment when it goes. ;)

Mike and how are you so sure that other people don't know who you are talking about? There's a person here on FriendFeed who complains about their coworker. Even though I live in a different city, I know that coworker.

Well someone has to make room for other people! From the sounds of it, she was probably already canned anyway.
- Robert Fisher
Well that was a bit dumb. The thing about social media is it's just so much a part of our lives. We are encouraged to pour our views and feelings into it but we have to remember who is going to be reading it. In the end we have to censor ourselves so as a result our lifestream is a watered down stream. There are no directors cuts.
- Parvez Halim
Interestingly, every time I consider complaining about my job via any social media platform, I stop and think "how can I make my job better? how can I improve myself?" and then end up writing about that instead. It has made me a much happier person. Really.

.. and that's why I'm private. I'm pretty good about not talking about work, but never know when I may say something completely stupid

I think there is a serious point here: Your on-line social network pals will be supportive of you regardless of whether you are right or wrong. That's what friends are for, kind of. All the boss does is let in a bit of reality.

Facebook obviously liked FriendFeed a long time ago. Why would they have copied so many features (feed item comments and the "Like" action, to name a couple) otherwise? It was only logical for this to happen eventually. Doesn't mean I like it, but acquisition is part of the game. I have the same feeling I did when SocialThing! was acquired by AOL, though.

I really don't see why people would be anything but excited about this Facebook freindfeed deal. Great news as far as I am concerned. The Friend feed team is going to go over facebook and make it that much easier to connect, share... isn't that what the social web is about?
- Kevin Murray
I know a lot of people who use Facebook and enjoy it and that's fair enough. It's just not my cup of tea. The chaps from Friendfeed will get rich and the technology will get absorbed in Facebook but I can't see Friendfeed continuing in anything like it's present form.

Don't be so negative, something good might eventually come of this...
- Tarmo Aidantausta
Congrats! I know you all must be crazy excited right now.
- Michele Lorito-Chase
chance for FriendFeed to become more mainstream... congrats FriendFeed team!
- Jeroen De Miranda
Nothing could make me happier than if they integrated the good tools from FriendFeed into Facebook, which is where all my friends are. So a big "yay!" from me.
- Ian Betteridge
happy for you guys, but not for all of us
- Flavio
congratulations. this is going to be interesting.
- Dave Beckett
I think I preferred the non-mainstream version of FriendFeed...
- Tyson Key
I'm turning on my black shirt, my black trouser, my black socks, my black shoes. Although I probably must be happy for you.
- Ton Zijp
NASTY NASTY BAD BAD. But we'll see...
- Daniel Morgan
Given that the FriendFeed team has never been anything but awesome & respectful of its community, I think it's unfair for people to assume that the Facebook acquisition is going to change that.
- Jess Lee
Why in god's name are we flying over this shark?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
- Matthew DeVries
Facebook is like a giant who listens to nobody. Please keep your attitude but I don't think you will be able to do so.
- Burak "cyrus" Bayburtlu
I don't know, Like it? or dislike it?
- Ömer Balamir
What happens to all the content that we've created and imported here, and the associated metadata? Will all that disappear into the ether?
- Tyson Key
If the FriendFeed guys can make FaceBook useful and responsive again, this seems like a pretty positive step!
- Robin Barooah
Robin, the Facebook users don't want that I'm afraid.
- Rutger Blom
I have big loss of data concerns. See http://ff.im/6pHjo Is there any way to archive all my FriendFeed posts, likes, comments, and pictures (friendfeed-media.com) off-line? Can some Archive.org-like snapshots of FriendFeed be made (Once a month starting Sept 2009)? I'd like to see the cross-links between my posts & other people's posts, even in 2020. -
- Mitchell Tsai
Mitchell: the FriendFeed site is not shutting down. Your data will not go away any time in the near term future - we are committed to our users.
- Bret Taylor
I just overheard a coworker mention FriendFeed. This is how the world ends...

- Alper Ömer Esin
Then provide us with a way to easily make a back-up of all of our posts and all of the posts we have Liked and Commented on.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want it to be handed off to Facebook.
- Zio Bonino
I don't see good things coming from this. Although I like Facebook, I liked Friendfeed more. Partly because of the environment and the smallness of it. That is now going to be ruined. So, 10-1 odds that Friendfeed will be no more within a year after it gets intergrated into Facebook?
- Mathew™ one of a kind
I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck.
- Jim in Real Time
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want anything to be handed off to Facebook. And I don't want to lose anything.
- Zio Bonino
Congrats obviously, but im not sure about the feeling,, different user groups which can not integrate but collide.. hope there wont be an huge integration in the future.
- Yunus Tunak
I'm happy for FriendFeed! But, at the same time a bit worried about the future. Hope you guys convince FB to not be evil too.
- Vishal Verma
I can't believe it! damn! facebook tos will apply to friendfeed too? should i start to move to another service? why anyone would think that facebook public is friendfeed public?! damn! friedfeed was my favorite! I can't understand this move! they want to kill friendfeed or what?

"I bet I can find 1.000.0000 people who dislike this deal."...Welcome to FriendBook.
- Jacque
Well, huge congraulations to you and your team, you deserve every success. To be honest I had presumed this would happen sooner or later - the only business model cool little startups have is to hope they get bought by someone bigger for their brains and technology. I'm going to be in San Francisco in a couple of weeks and was going to stop by your office to bring you a cake and thank you for a great product - maybe I still will if you're still there and there's still a FriendFeed!
- Alex Lomas
The FF founders must have know this would be a very unpopular move. Most users I know here are not too fond of FB.
- Rutger Blom
"Your data will not go away any time in the near term future - we are committed to our users" There's a bit of a contradiction in your statement, Bret. Nice try though.
- jcunwired
Now I can break my Internet plan at home.
- DarkBls
Grats Bret and the rest of FF. To all the naysayers... Lets see what happens before we start bitching....
- Rasmus Lauridsen
This ties in nicely with the fact that you soon will have the opportunity to make your Facebook profiles public and get followers there.
- Michael Netsch
I don't mean to be negative but there's got to be a win-win logic to each merger&acquisiton. Audience high in only quantity is clearly not a win for friendfeed in the long term by considering its unique selling points. Let's wait and see who will benefit from friendfeed's death now.
- ayca
It's all about the money. I would have payed a couple of dollars each month to use FF.
- Rutger Blom
Seriously, what is this? It's like Bret just announced that he's killed all your mothers or something. It could turn out good, it could turn out bad, but at the end of the day, who cares, it's just a website (I mean honestly, come on). I could see it going either way, but in the near term, this is a pretty big win for the FF team, so congrats guys.
- Chieze Okoye
To be honest, my heart sank a little but I am happy to congratulate you and the team for building such a good brand. Well done.
- Kevin J Hatton
I'm just surprised, that's all. I'm not saying this is a bad thing (it certainly isn't for the owners of FF). I'm willing to sit back and see what happens.
- Jason, Craving
Wow, I specifically use friendfeed b/c it is not facebook. Sounds great for the friendfeed team, but not necessarily for friendfeed users.
- Evan Parker
Born to be sold, like in the old "new economy" era. Remember the late nineties?
- Federico Bolsoman
Sudden desire to check out Strands again... but hey, kudos on the incoming $$ for FF team
- Leslie Poston
This is wisdom. Bracing for Google Wave is a good idea.............
- Kevin J Hatton
this is clearly a talent aquisition... why am i not excited about this? could it be because facebook has been blatantly stealing features from friendfeed shamelessly. Likes were clearly not an original facebook idea...realtime feeds is another i could go on...
- Tate DA FF MVP
While I'm sad, because I suspect this means the best things about FF will disappear or I'll be forced to use FB in some way, if the buyout was for some awesome amount of money, I can't say I blame 'em for taking an offer -- I would.
- Andy Bakun
I came to FriendFeed because I don't like facebook. Now the question is, will facebook become more like friend feed? or will they just take friend feed and turn it into facebook?
- Tom Ray
FF could be a good R&D arm for facebook.
- Andy Bakun
My biggest concern here is that FB has a completely different audience than FF.
- Rutger Blom
Fucking morons. FriendFeed is doomed now. Think logically. Facebook has NO REASON to keep FriendFeed alive. It will simply take FF's best features, suck the life of out of it, then trash FF. Way to go, FirnedFeed, damn.
- Jeremy Buff
This announcement should have been held off until the plans for Friendfeed were known. Regardless, this is *bad* for FF users. Best case: it continues on, but with stagnated feature development. Worst case: it's gone.
- tollie williams
I don't want my FF feed on Facebook :( I use both, but maintain both profiles separate
- Leandro Ardissone ⍨
Sigh... Happy for the team if this is what they want, but baffled by the move. The users that are going to leave because of this will make FF a graveyard and the users it gains, well... Hello spam? Sorry, but I don't like it.
- Vince DeGeorge
from iPhone
Well, I guess it is time to dismantle my friendfeed. We all know where this is headed. So, so glad I didn't move all my rss feeds from greader to friendfeed like so many cheerleaders suggested.
- Matthew Speicher
Dang, and just as I was starting to get used to how FF works. FF is useful on it's own. I hope this only improves FF's system, rather than having it disappear into Facebook's wake.
- Don Faulkner
My big question to everybody here is this: What are the potential downsides / upsides to this acquisition? I mean on paper I just don't see what the pros OR cons are. I don't care for Facebook but I don't see how them acquiring FF is going to change everything.
- Nicholas Kreidberg
furthermore they are 2 different things: I follow a lot of people here that are not in my facebook list, which is for IRL friends!
- Flavio
I don't know where to go next either. I had just settled down to make imaginary friends for all my non-FF tweeps, etc. now, I'm not sure if I should bother.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
I hope friendfeed continues to operate normally but it does not look good.
- ashish
integrate best features of ff to fb, then try to innovate in fb if possible, then kill ff... that's it, cheers, all the best. grrrr...
- Kemal
niczak has good points. FF & FB aren't exactly competitors, but they aren't orthogonal either. Let's hope FB's smart enough to see the difference and improve both platforms.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline.
- Ken Sheppardson
Don, I don't think FB wants to maintain two platforms.
- Rutger Blom
first tr.im (heard about it yesterday), now this. I wasn't a heavy tr.im user (yet), but sad to see it go, even if I think url shortening is silly.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
As FB said they're interested in the people and not in the site, what if the community will keep running FF without its current staff?
- Flavio
I'll have to go with Flavio's position too. Given this news (plus tr.im and who knows who's next), I'd tend to favor community supported or federated services for things like this in the future.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
I am purposely not on facebook because I don't really want to talk to people I have not talked to in 20 years.
- Andy Bakun
Once again. I'm happy for the FF team. They worked hard and now collect. That's fair. Wonder if they're sitting in a bubble pool drinking champagne while we cry out here ;-)
- Rutger Blom
trouble is (from my perspective), that the philosophies of the two platforms are at odds. FB wants to bring people to the site and keep them there, while FF is a hub, bringing people in and then sending them back out. (That's part of why it's hard for the newcomer to understand, IMHO.)
- Don Faulkner
from IM
Quote «Taylor and Cox say that the Friendfeed product will live on independently, and eventually Friendfeed will be merged into Facebook. But the Friendfeed team is not being kept whole. I don't see what's so bad about it since no one knows right now what the outcome will be, everyone is just making assumptions that could possibly be wrong..... Might help just sitting back and seeing what happens first before complaining.

Don, I doubt there is any discussion going on there. They're too busy throwing quizes at each other.
- Rutger Blom
Congrats, FF! I'm approaching the situation with cautious optimism. A lot of my friends only share stuff via the Facebook wall/feed, so if Facebook is able to make their feed more like the FF feed (i.e. good, instead of sucktacular) through this acquisition, it's mostly a win for me in the end.

Now maybe you can see "whats so bad about it" and curb your optimism. Not good.
- jcunwired

- Sean Leather
Congrats. I suppose this means the end of FriendFeed but hopefully a better Facebook.
- Harry Toon
Please say that facebook.com will be shutting down, and the combined company will still be called FriendFeed... I bet it won't happen, though.

"Regarding FB/FF - Here's how it's [probably] going to work. You will most likely have an account merge, all of the services FriendFeed supports will now be aggregated on Facebook, and all of your FriendFeed friends will be in a "list" on Facebook. The FF Groups will become Facebook Groups. The FF lists will become Facebook Lists." http://ff.im/6pNxq

- Cassidy
Best case: Facebook will continue to support and develop FriendFeed. Worst case: this is great news for Amplifeeder.
- David Gaw
FAIL. Facebook is the new myspace, and now friendfeed will become a part of that BS. Can't say I'm too surprised because eventually we all sell out. BTW I don't see friendfeed lasting more than the rest of this year, if that. The good news is that we can all be subjected to add 'Are you related to a monkey?' and Blackjack apps while having annoying personal ads on our profile pages. Fuck this shit.
- Tomy Thomson

- Mike D.
Congrats, but concerned that FriendFeed and its tools may disappear. Merging the tools with Facebook seems impossible.
- Mike Reynolds
So, what does the acquisition of FriendFeed by Facebook mean to us, users of both websites: Can I make a friend request from FriendFeed, and be approved for both, on one click
- Reyna Carlos
Exciting news guys. I am actually looking forward to your collaboration with / work for FB. No matter what people may or may not like about FB, it does succeed in reaching a more "diverse" audience compared to most other Web 2.0/social web companies. Paired with your team's excellence in realizing features that succeed in pleasing the geekiest of Web 2.0 affine individuals, I think you are steering towards exciting waters :)
- Mustafa K. Isik
*heart sinks* actually a bit of shock - I think that Facebook will leave Friendfeed as-is but I don't think there is hope for future innovation in Friendfeed since their best superstar team members will be pulled onto 'more important' Facebook issues...
- Pon

- orionstarr
I am disappointed. I don't want to have to go to Facebook to do what i do here. I can not imagine they will port over all the features we enjoy here. We lose a lot for only a slight benefit to Facebook.

Awful news for users but congratulations to you guys. Ideally, FB will run FF as a distinct service but I'm not hopeful. I don't want the diversity and noise that facebook brings - people doing quizzes on which movie star they resemble and playing silly games. I also wanted to keep my day to day social activity distinct from the targeted information and discussion I use FF for.

The community won't be there. Been on FB longer than any other, don't have nearly the relationship or sense of community there that I do here or on Twitter.
- Karoli
Karoli: that is due to the effectiveness of the FF platform and interface, which help to join conversations and find interesting people more so than FB does

Mike: I suspect that FB wants FF for the search possibilities, not the community-building aspects. But we'll see.

Thomas Power still believes that Facebook/FF/Linkedin (2010) will be acquired by Apple (2011) and this is a transitional acquisition in the SN market cycle. The world is shifting to Mac, iTunes, iPhones and FB own the next generation. Apple have $29bn of cash on deposit price is not an issue. Google must jump for twitter while MS fiddle in the sticks with Yahoo. BillG will be back at the MS helm 2012.

Flavio: never heard of lifestream.fm before, but I'm going to go check it out. I'll reiterate, though, that I'm now shy of any service like this, since it can disappear just as it's getting good. I heard about sweetcron.com last night (via http://ff.im/6pR2w). Maybe it's time to move from centralized to distributed again.
- Don Faulkner
Just finished setting up my lifestream.fm at http://lifestream.fm/dfaulkner. Lifestream does what it says, and no more. FF's search blows lifestream away. FF is more flexible about adding source feeds, but lifestream does fine without the flexibility I suppose. FF still wins, or would, if I thought it would be sticking around. :P
- Don Faulkner
I also hate facebook, not because of their silly quizzes and pokes, but because I suspect they would like to maintain massive user base as the determining factor in choosing a social network. I would love to switch to orkut as I use so many other google services, but I can't because nobody else does. That should not be my criteria.... I thought friendfeed would try to make social networks work together.

@orionstarr - it's like Starbucks buying your neighborhood coffee shop and saying it still cares about the customers. You know it's just not going to be the same as what you've come to love.
- Robin Barooah
Presumably FF will go on the back burner - and the team will try and "fix" Facebook.
- Tim Tyler
I've watched Facebook morph from a relatively organised and well implemented social networking tool into the hulking mess it is now - and I really, really hope that a similar thing doesn't happen here with the inevitable changes this will bring about.
- Leslie Moore
Come on guys, out with the long-term game plan, this is tedious.
- Andrew Eglinton
NOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, I mean Cool.
- sofarsoShawn
Teach Facebook how to be FriendFeed. Let the small but fast teach the big but slow. Don't forget what Paul says - don’t be evil.
- whatidiscover
FriendFeeders, I've been working on incorporating Helvetica Neue into [new] logotypes for the social media sites that I participate in. Consider it an experiment in Helvetica. FriendFeed is one of my favorite...in terms of both communities that I participate in and logotypes that I've created. By the way, I'm not knocking the current logos of any of these companies...and realize that all of my solutions in this series are one-sided (i.e. they did not result from communicating with a client). They're just an expression of my love for places like FriendFeed as well as a way for me to pursue my own artistic endeavors. I hope you like them. Oh, and I'm also available for work, if anyone is hiring ;)

Good use of type. I like how the E's give the impression of lists (since FF is an aggregation service).
- Alexander Grundner
Thanks for the comments and feedback; I've added about a dozen or so since originally posting this and am happy to have heard from some co-founders :)

this is so crazy! i cant believe the dog jumps over the car like that! i just retweeted this.
- Jason Pollock
The cops came around the bowling alley after all the customers left and ended up doing a training exercise with the dog. Someone put on a sleeve. It was awesome!
- Rodfather
Oops !!! are you sure that is dog ??? :)))
- CRASH3R
That's incredible. Not one iota of hesitation.
- Rick Cogley
training exercise but that dog would do the same in real - and a few bites are better than a bullet even for the perpetrator.
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Someone needs to wrap a PR person around him
- Jesse Stay
Jesse, but then he'd get all greasy :)
- Brett Kelly
Funny thing is that Twitter is all about people talking, not numbers I thought. If the people are louder than the numbers that says something's wrong.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse: You should know it's not important what you say, what's important is how many other people say exactly the same thing.
- Ken Sheppardson
Jesse: these guys are all dopes. Numbers? Twitter isn't run by numbers. I can prove this. Alex should talk...
- Robert Scoble
New way to see @replies. Twitter Screenshots in Friendfeed :) See lots of them tonite.
- Atul Arora
Heh, good point about the spam accounts. The % of accounts that are inactive or spam is likely mind-boggling, which would make the % of wide-open reply lovers MUCH higher.
- Lee Adkins
So does that suggest all the Twitter users are liars?
- Louis Gray
Sorry to confuse you Joelle: I work at FriendFeed.
- Benjamin Golub
Benjamin, can you authorize a "misprinted" card with my info on it?
- Amber, Random Time Lord
I have to admit, they look a lot better than the highly compressed dynamic image that was being displayed for the promotion! BTW, is that card on the right your FriendFeed business card or the reverse of the Google one?
- Tony Ruscoe
Tony: The right is the reverse of my FriendFeed business card (the front has my phone number on it :P). The reverse of the Google cards are blank.
- Benjamin Golub
Got mine today. Underwhelmed but they were free and will be fun to give to people while saying I have a new job and here's how to reach me. :D
- CAJ, somewhere else
When was this promotion? sounds like i missed the boat haha
- Frankie Warren
Oooo seeing those two together has given me an idea. To Moo!
- EricaJoy
the friendfeed one is way cooler ...
- Laura Norvig
yeah, the ff cards are indeed slicker.
- Brett Kelly
One of my ex-managers suggested I use old business cards for grocery lists or other sticky note-ish things; at least that way you can get some use before you recycle them.
- Muneer Mirza
I got mine too. Look cool, but looks like I work for Google. I bet I could pass them off to an unsuspecting person and say "I work for Google."
- Robert Scoble
no google cards for european citizens?
- Dani Martínez
I was going to get some but I had just ordered my KangarooBox business cards and didn't want to take someone's possible goodies. :)
- Richard Hurt
I hand out Moo cards on the street all the time. People love them.
- Thomas Hawk
Have to consider this "street thing".... Is this like "going out"? ;))
- Dieter Schwarz
Mine are printed 'Your Name Here' on the cards, but with the correct name on the mailing envelope. Fun. And prophetic.
- A Mitchell
tap tap tap tap tap....oh yeah "Snail" mail....gonna be escargot mail when I'm done ;-)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I have yet to receive mine which are being delivered to the Gplex. :(
- EricaJoy
Agreed on the will never use them - in hindsight should have passed but my inner-geek insisted I order 'em.
- gregory leff
from fftogo
Hey, you can always use them to enter free food contests at restaurants! Just drop the card in the fishbowl for a free meal. :)
- Richard Hurt
It's only a matter of time before someone uses these to pick up women in a bar... stay tuned...
- paula gould
How do people go about getting these? Both are great for networking events. [UPDATE #1] A quick on search Google points me here: http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2009... I guess I need to finish filling out my profile so I can take advantage of the offer. [UPDATE #2] It looks like all the free cards have been given away. I finished completing my profile and there's no link to a free business card :(

Children of Dune - This was Muad'Dib's achievement: He saw the subliminal reservoir of each individual as an unconscious bank of memories going back to the primal cell of our common genesis.

I don't dig the Disney princesses, but I have to admit, this was pretty well done.
- April Buchheit
One of the best examples of hand drawn animation. Nothing comes close to it.
- Melanie Reed
You can buy single frame cels of animation from Disney. When I was there, it was on the network, which threw you back to the past in the weirdest way, during the workday.
- anna sauce
Gorgeous. But the best animated film ever is definitely Sleeping Beauty. Pick it up on Blu-ray if you haven't yet. You'll just die.

"Google's big surprise: each server has its own 12-volt battery to supply power if there's a problem with the main source of electricity. The company also revealed for the first time that since 2005, its data centers have been composed of standard shipping containers--each with 1,160 servers and a power consumption that can reach 250 kilowatts. [...] It may sound geeky, but a number of attendees--the kind of folks who run data centers packed with thousands of servers for a living--were surprised not only by Google's built-in battery approach, but by the fact that the company has kept it secret for years."
- Simon
from Bookmarklet
Hmm, I was in a Google data center two years ago (not one of their big ones) and it didn't have individual power supplies and didn't have machines in shipping containers. Seems to me that the shipping container would impede heat transfer and would add unnecessary expense. I'm sure they dont use them everywhere.
- Robert Scoble
Has CNet been "Scobled"? Site's pretty much toast.
- Kenton
That's pretty darn cool. Hope it's not an April fools joke.
- Alex Scoble
Alex: I wonder. The servers I saw inside Google had Seagate drives. These are Hitachis. But I know that Google refreshes all its machines quite often. This looks real and makes sense.
- Robert Scoble
Paul: I know Sun was doing the shipping container thing, but that only makes sense when you need one small data center on premises, or something like that. Building a whole warehouse/data center like that doesn't make any sense.
- Robert Scoble
Plus I know they don't just use one brand of drives.
- Alex Scoble
Google has lots of data centers all over the place, though, and I could see Google using a shipping container in some weird location. Just not in its big datacenter up in Oregon.
- Robert Scoble
Scoble, MSFT has data centers that are silos for containers. Makes a lot of sense if you think of having to swap in and out huge numbers of machines every 18-24 months.
- Aaron deMello
Aaron: wild. I'd love to visit one of those huge data centers and see how they do airflow management.
- Robert Scoble
By the way, CNET is down right now (all of CNET, not just the one this article points to).
- Robert Scoble
Yeah, I wonder if it's more efficient in the long run to have separate air and power handling for each container. Probably makes it a lot quicker to build up large server farms. Just connect the modules and download the software.
- Alex Scoble
The shipping container thing could make sense if they were stuffed into a shelving system - open the one end to allow for cooling, plug the whole box full of boxes in, and go. There was one company that was doing prefab hotels in this kind of fashion. build shell, and stuff pre-fab rooms in the slots. Do the datacenter the same way.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Yeah, CNET is having problems but it seems to be intermittent.
- Alex Scoble
The most interesting thing to me is the shipping container concept. That's the future model of efficiency. Portable data centers that you can drop anywhere you need 'em.
- Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Robert, each of the large vendors has their own solution to airflow management. Take a look at what Rackable and Verari are doing, quite interesting. Verari's are actually portable and designed to work outdoors.
- Aaron deMello
With these sorts of cooling requirements you'd think they'd bury the shipping containers 20 feet underground or in old coal mines or something.
- Andrew Leyden
The one thing I can tell you is that no Google employee will go near commenting on something like this. It is made *very* clear that anything touching datacenters is super-uber confidential.
- Joe Beda ()
I think it's a very smart design on Google's part. Years ago, when I worked in the Sprint's Central Offices the telecom battery backups were hideously large and only used when the diesel generators failed. Matter of fact, I think many of those beer keg size batteries were decades old.
- Donna Payne
This "secret server" was revealed in 2006 (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/archive...). I personally looked at the power cable coming out the back of the power supply, being routed back *in* the case, *under* the mobo and out through the front, and had a Luke Skywalker reaction: "What a piece of junk!" Which I suppose is the cue for Han Solo to walk out of the...
- Karim
my favorite quote from that 2006 article: " he said that in his first week working [at Google] they flew anyone who wanted to go, to denver to go skiing.... during the work week too ahaha" soooo it's like "super-efficient data centers, scrimping and saving every penny OMG DID SOMEONE SAY SKIING? FIRE UP THE PARTY PLANE!!!" :-D
- Karim
Ok, so how many of you are now trying to build one of these at home? That would be a good MAKE episode.
- Andrew Leyden
I bet all those $15 batteries would be a maintenance nightmare in a typical datacenter.
- Gabe
The article has been updated with additional photos and details: "Google's PUE [Power Usage Effectiveness] scores are enviably low, but the company is working to lower them further. [...] "[From] early on, there was an emphasis on the dollar per (search) query," Hoelzle said. "We were forced to focus. Revenue per query is very low.""
- Simon
where the hell is "ability to search like Friendfeed"? in 2010? damn!!! :P
- Goktug Gedik
"like" on Facebook doesn't bump the entry to the top. Not quite the same thing. However, you do get notifications on FB items that you "like".
- Morton Fox
Now someone should do what they copied from Twitter.

Anne, how do you like the show? I know you watched one episode a while back... I love this season...
- Karen Padham Taylor
You can get all of season one on Netflix (watch instantly). It's a good idea if you want to get into it.
- Louis Gray
Karen, I've been enjoying the show either on tv or online. It looks like prior seasons are available online also so I may check them out. Louis, thanks for the tip!
- Anne Bouey
We LOVE this show! Characters that are real people, good story telling, it's got it all.
- Sheila Taylor
Now that is just plain weird. Or is it weirder that you noticed that?! :) twitter has re-wired our brains! (I know, some folks think it' Google, no it's TWITTER I tell ya!)
- Susan Beebe
I noticed all the sentences were short, so I copy/pasted into Mail, did return carriages after each sentence. Then I copy/pasted the long ones to Twitter, just to check. :)
- Louis Gray
do you think it's on purpose--a marketing ploy--or has Twitter affected this writing?
- .LAG liked that
LAG: maybe he did the interview in Twitter!
- Robert Scoble
I wish more people would keep things to 140 characters. People go on way too much and loose focus of the point most of the time.
- MarkCarras
Louis I'm amazed that A) you thought to test it B) that you did it. Strange but interesting.
- Keith - @tsudo
louis, you're a geek! how many hours do your day have?.... can't believe you get so much done and still count words in random articles :-)
- Peter Efland
it says at the end, "As told to Patricia R. Olsen" -- maybe he DM'd her?
- Pete Delucchi
Robert makes a good point, infact its probably the most realistic answer as to why the sentences are less then 140 characters and for the one above that, maybe he replaced certain words with abbreviations to keep within the limit ;)
- Nicholas James
I met Robert at last year's IFA in Berlin for a short walk around the show floor. He's great guy and I wish him and his new venture all the best. And I agree that he should get back together with Rocky. I don't think they are done with their work yet...
- Holger Eilhard
Robert has a long history of personal resiliency, so I am thinking that this is just a minor setback. I too want to wish him well.
- Brian Sullivan
Brian, I don't think of this as a setback for him at all. I think of this as a new and better opportunity for him. Like a lot of magazines Fast Company I'm sure was hit hard in this recent downturn. Robert needs certain things to thrive best. Rocky was a first rate editor. Robert's time is best spent doing what he does which is out and about interviewing people and having someone like Rocky to edit his stuff was important. Robert will do better someplace that is growing rather than cutting back.
- Thomas Hawk
Robert you might want to tuck that away for your eulogy. Quite a tribute.
- Todd Hoff
Todd: Thomas is one of the best people I know, it's a real honor to have him as a friend.
- Robert Scoble
We all know Scoble will be a-ok in the days, weeks and years to come. I'm sure we're going to hear news about this awesome new service that pays by the kilobyte of awesome video you post, meaning Scoble will become very, very wealthy...
- Mike Nayyar
Great post Thomas - I'm also looking forward to his next venture ...
- Patrick Jordan
A very good article that helps us remember how much he contributes to our community.
- Jonathon
Mike: actually that's a very interesting idea! :-)
- Robert Scoble
Very nice post on Scoble. I've never met either of you, but from your descriptions I can tell that you both are exactly how you come across online. And that is most definitely not a bad thing :-)
- Rene Wirtz
We have to wait until SXSW? You're killing me! Whatever he does you know it's going to be good.

Good luck Scoble. We met at a Social Media Club event in Phoenix a few years back and I have been following you ever since. Looking forward to your new adventures.
- John Seiferth
Amen! You've got lots of helpers if you ever need them!
- Scott Loftesness
What a wonderful article, and the pictures at Flickr were enjoyable as well. I wish the two of you would do a photowalk in San Diego so I could meet both of you in person!
- Laura Zickus
Best of luck to you! May your next chapter be profitable to you in every possible way!
- vicster is...
That was a great summary of Scoble. I'm sure his next adventure will be something to watch.
- Jeremy Brooks
The sentiment here about Robert (and folks like TH too) are right on - the level of transparency, integrity and work ethic we see sets the bar high for leaders in a community (a network of micro communities, as it might be put better). Think about Paul Harvey. An endearing, tireless pioneer who reached his community with the media/technology of his day for 70+ years. Scobleizer's journey, I believe, has just begun.
- Micah Wittman
more time to spend with the Sean McBrides of the world. lucky "fast company" to be rid of a man and his destructive politics.

Fabulous post Thomas!! WOW!!!!!!! Lovely, moving and very well documented. Robert is an amazingly passionate, intelligent, smart and uber-technical guy that really has an astounding work ethic that never fails to deliver value in everything he does!! - you captured that very well with this blog post. :) Personally, I -like you- think he should link up with Friendfeed. that would be a PERFECT fit and a complete win-win relationship; however, I'd be concerned that FF might be too small for him.

Hey - Myspace is still useful for independent bands! I'm embarrassed to have its iPhone app (on my last page) so I can check up on my band's issues/shows/whining/etc. on the go... We do, however, get lots of friend requests from butterfly tramp stamps, and we deny them because there is no way they looked at our profile. But seriously, if a BAND denies your friendship on MySpace you need to re-evaluate your life.
