This week I have been getting into revision mode ready for the easter holidays. This has definately reminded me how fast this year is going and has showed me that I have to be constantly on top of my work as there is no time to leave things to last minute. I am anxious to see my grade for #BS1005 genes essay tomorrow as I remember finding it rather difficult. I am pleased with the results for the essay and practical booklet from #BS1009 microbiology. Hopefully I will continued to be pleased. This week I have also seen my personal tutor to discuss my modules option and think I have more of a clearer image of where I am taking this degree but definately more thinking to do. Overall this week has been a thought provoking week. - Niyati Velani

I have not entered a diary post for a while down to not much going on work wise. I'm still notemaking and going over lectures to ensure I know the content before we break up for easter. I did not particularly enjoy the #BS1008 evolution practical last week as it just did not interest me, hopefully the behavioural ecology practical tomorrow would be more interesting especially as I am considering picking behavioural ecology as a second year module. Overall, again it has been a laid back but productive week. - Niyati Velani

This week had been very productive! I did not have any practicals or tutorials just lectures giving me the oppurtunity to dedicate my time to just notemaking. This will hopefully make it easier for me to revise during the easter and go over the content more than once. Overall it has been a laid back but productive week. - Niyati Velani

I am definately glad that last week is over and done with, all them deadlines stressed me out. This has taught me that although my organisational skills have improved my time managment hasn't. I will have to look into ways of improving this is if i want to keep on top of deadlines. I am also looking forward to starting the new modules #BS1006 and #BS1008 as I think these modules will be of particular interest to me. Overall it has been a hetic week but looking forward to this one :) - Niyati Velani
Video: New Microscope Produces 3-D Movies of Live Cells In Action - http://www.popsci.com/science...
I thought this tied in nicely with #bs1009 as we learnt about the history of microscope at the beginning of the module and now it seems microscopes are improving by seeing cells in 3D! - Niyati Velani

These past few week have definately flown by, after this week we would have finished 3 modules already! I'm looking forward to the timetable being more laid back so I can go through lectures and catch up. i enjoyed the #BS1013 practical however i didnt enjoy the smell! I have completed 2/3 essays so overall it has been a good week :) - Niyati Velani
#MyDiary 23/02/2011
My diary entry for last week is a bit later than usual due to me trying to keep on top of my work. So far I have completed the #BS1013 essay quite easily but I am struggling with the #BS1005 gene's essay, I will definately be attending the genes clinic next week! I was pleasantly suprised with the #BS1011 assessment mark from last week considering I did it rather late and did not attend the help session, this week i'm definately going to complete it earlier! I enjoyed the first #BS1013 animal practical (not just because it finished early, although that is a plus!) however I still found the report challenging. I also got the got the first plant report back and again was suprised by the result as I thought I did rather badly! Last week was definately more organised and I hope it continues to stay that way! - Niyati Velani

The second week of semester two was definately an improvment on the first week. I am enjoying the contents of the lectures however I did find the first practical write up for #BS1013 rather difficult, that is due to not being organised in the practical. I was definately more organised in the second practical and have completed the second write up but it would of been useful if I had feedback from the first report. I really enjoyed the #BS1005 practical, watching the drosophila flies fall asleep was fun. This week I think I definately need to plan ahead for the essays and presentation coming up so i dont fall behind and end up doing it last minute. Overall it was a good week :) - Niyati Velani
Scientists Mine Dormant Bacterial Genes For New Antibiotics - http://www.popsci.com/science...
This article links in with #BS1009. Researchers have found an inactive gene group on a bacterium called Streptomyces coelicolor. The inactive gene group produces a antibiotic compound. Hopefully this would be effective agaisnt some cancers and fungis. - Niyati Velani

So far I have enjoyed majority of lectures and I'm enjoying the modules much more than first semester however it seems there is a bigger work load but maybe that is because I haven't settled into a routine yet. The practicals have been enjoyable and engaging except for #BS1013 I found the practical rather long and tedious which frustrated me. I think reading through practicals before hand and maybe doing extra research will aid me in the future. Overall it had been a satisfactory week. - Niyati Velani
Very scared about tomorrow's #CH1070 exam :-s
Good luck, I hope you do well! - Pritesh Mistry
Same here, I really struggle with multiple choice tests. Good luck :) - Katharina J Kusztelan
The #BS1015 mock wasn't as bad as i thought it would be! the questions were really straight forward, with more revision shouldnt be too bad in jan! i hope!
ohh really?? Thats good news :)) Well done!! I'm rather nervous for my one. Although it will be good practice for the january exams, and we can refer back to the mock paper near to the exam period. - Minelli Torosyan
World's Largest Video Protein Database Promises Rapid Drug Development - http://www.popsci.com/science...
This reminded me of the rcsb protein data bank that Chris Willmont told us to use in the #BS1015 lectures to see proteins on the Ramsol software. However this database mentioned in the article called MoDEL, contains protein motion data for more than 1,700 different human proteins, making it the largest such database of proteins in the world. This will help pharmacetical makers manipulate protein structures more safely as they can see an actual video of the protein rather than a static picture. it should help them more quickly identify new potential therapies and reduce failures in clinical trials. - Niyati Velani
Taxonomists Launch A Grand Effort to Classify Every Species on Earth, With Your Help - http://www.popsci.com/science...
This article relates to #bs1012...In our tutorials we have to do a taxonomy of a species that was given to us individually, in this article scientists/taxonomists aim to catalogue every single species in the world in 50 years. This could lead to software being developed which can analyse photos and instantly recognise and classify the species. this would be very useful for all sorts of people from amateur enthusiats (which it states in the article) to doctors that need to identify animals for treating bites. - Niyati Velani
Dynamic Darwinism: Evolution Theory Thrives Today - http://www.sciam.com/article...
This article touches upon the Cambrian Explosion which was talked about in #BS1012 lectures. It talks about how Charles Darwin left out the cambrian explosion when he punlished On the Origin of Species in 1859, it then further talks about how evolutionary theories have been elaborated on greatly since Darwin. - Niyati Velani
DNA sequence may be lost in translation - http://www.nature.com/news...
I have choosen to share this article as it is recent research on gene mutation which links in with the #BS1015 lectures. This specific article talks about whether RNA edits the message from DNA, this could be the cause of neurological disorders amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and epilepsy. However they do not fully know whether or not the edited RNA is translated into proteins or if it is ignored. The research is new and therefore not fully developed. - Niyati Velani
This does tie in nicely with #BS1015 as we were looking at factors that affect translation and transcription.... so this article would be concerning tanslational processing?.... this is quite interesting :) - Novpreet Rainer
Common themes in centriole and centrosome movements. - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez...
I thought this would be interesting as we have been looking at mitosis and meiosis in the #BS1003 lectures with Dr Tom Matheson. - Niyati Velani
Kinetochores' gripping feat: conformational wave or biased diffusion? - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez...
I decided to share this as loads of people including me in the #BS1003 lectures had not heard of the term kinetochores! Hopefully this will help you gain an in depth understanding. I am also looking for more information from books in the library, if I find anything interesting I will post the name of any books for extra reading :) - Niyati Velani

Which module is this relevant to? - Dr Alan Cann
It doesn't relate to any of our modules, I was reading an article on the bbc website and I saw the link to this on the side and I was just curious :) - Niyati Velani
