The slides from the seminar that Wayne Brent and I conducted at the EDUCAUSE 2009 Conference are now online. Here's the original session description: Since 2004, the Horizon Report has provided an invaluable tool for identifying the emerging technologies and trends that will impact education. However, the report is much more than an annual printed booklet: it is also a process that you can use at your institution to create your own mini-Horizon for tactical and strategic planning and decision making. In this workshop, we will share and model the report process with you. By the conclusion of the seminar, we will have developed a specialized and fully up-to-date product that reflects the emerging technologies and issues of most direct relevance to seminar participants. At the same time, we'll also see how this approach can be supplemented by other tools like prediction markets. Come join the fun and be part of the process!

Teemu Arina "I did a presentation about the Horizon Report findings at the International Technology in Education (ITK) conference in Hämeenlinna, Finland. NMC Director Larry Johnson was kind enough to participate virtually on stage with me. In the presentation I go through six main trends and give my own take on these"

One of the reports that I always look forward to reading is the Horizon Report [PDF] from the New Media Consortium and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative. This report is always interesting to read and thought provoking. It contains important trends and topics that are an important read for anyone working in education. Whether or not you are a techie with a pocket protector, or a technophobe, or someone that lies somewhere in the middle, this report is well worth reading.

in early November I presented on my favorite podcast, the BBC’s “In Our Time,” for a New Media Consortium online symposium called “Rock The Academy: Radical Teaching, Unbounded Learning.” I’d long wanted to do a presentation on this podcast. When I learned that the NMC symposium would take place in Second Life, I found the opportunity irresistible and just had to submit a proposal.

Last weekend, ‘Foul Whisperings, Strange Matters‘ launched. It’s a fascinating take on Shakespeare’s Macbeth character, a “timely use of pop culture as an adaptive bridge between classic texts and new media technology”. The first five minutes of my wanderings around the build were reminiscent of the last Australia Council funded build I wandered around, Babelswarm. In this case, the New Media Consortium provided part of the funding as well. The similarity isn’t in relation to content, it’s the quality of the content. As Macduff says in the play: “The life o’ the building!”.

Earlier this year, the New Media Consortium and the Educase Learning Initiative released The New Horizon Report, outlining which current and burgeoning technologies they feel will “impact education over the next five years.“ The report includes several “mega trends” in educational technology, including user-generated video (or “grassroots” video), mobile, collaborative web environments, as well as content mash-ups.

These days, what can't be accomplished in real life is likely doable in Second Life. The virtual world even allows for study abroad. "Avatars gather at the New Media Consortium Campus"

But mainly I’m glad to have finally connected with the New Media Consortium. My old boss urged me to check them out some time before Katrina, but after the storm I was preoccupied.
