You can now get a daily or weekly email digest for anybody's feed on FriendFeed. You'll get a daily or weekly email with the most popular posts from that person's feed. To get the email, click the "Email/IM" link at the top of anyone's feed, and select the "Best of day" or "Best of week" email option.
Picture 11.png
You can see all of your email settings at http://friendfeed.com/setting... - Bret Taylor
Thanks Bret! :) - Matt Ruiz
Thanks to Kevin for doing a great design for what turned out to be a more complex set of UI options than we had originally anticipated, and thanks to Tudor for implementing the email backend. - Bret Taylor
Great! Thanks! Love FF! - Scott Monaco
I now get the FriendFeed Feedback posts as a Best of Day email so it doesn't fill up my feed, but I don't miss feedback. I also set up a "Best of Day" email for my "Technology people" friend list so I get a pretty good overview of tech news every day via email. - Bret Taylor
This is a really cool idea Bret, I wish you can make that an RSS feed option as well. I'd be much more likely to read summaries in RSS than in email. - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Lovely. Thanks guys. - Mitchell Tsai
Casey: Thanks for the tip. What's the 7 before the "?" mean in the URL? The number of likes or replies needed to be included? - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
this is killer, the random influx of email during the day was kinda getting fail-ish. I love the daily digest. - Drew Lucas
Very cool! Any way to get archives of previous months? (especially helpful for those of us who leave the internet for weeks at a time...) - Mitchell Tsai
WOW. that's really helpful! - K.D.
Looks like a great addition for those who are not embedded on the site. Nice intro. - Louis Gray
Cool! - Josh Haley
Ahsan: it is somewhat random right now when the emails are sent, but we built in the backend capability to control what time they are sent, and we plan on exposing that control to users in the future. Right now, it is kind of random - sorry! - Bret Taylor
Cool! can i get a daily or weekly email digest for the "Saved searches"? - 0M0M from email
This will be incredibly useful. Thanks to all involved in the design and execution. - Kathy Fitch
Nice addition! - Michael Fidler
But what exactly is "Best"? Is it anything that has a certain number of likes/comments? - Laura Norvig
@Bret LOL THAT WAS MY PROJECT! I will release it tomorrow. But you've also did it and killed my friendfeed application **sigh** But mine has multi-reporting weekly-daily-monthly at the same time and adjustable entry count! - Alp
@Bret please consolidate me or I won't code new apps with you api! :-) - Alp
Alp: we were not trying to withhold data. Later today the documentation will be updated to reflect the ability to obtain "Best of" for users. The feed id will be USERNAME/summary/N (similar to "Best of" for lists) - Benjamin Golub
Hi Ben, that is pretty funny, I tried that URL earlier today to see if it has been secretly released :) - Paul Kinlan
Bret: While Twitter struggle to keep their fail whale under control, you guys are developing stuff like this. Amazing - Thanks! - Jim Connolly
awesome feature, this will be highly useful for my corporate group ideas / content sharing; projects, etc.... THANK YOU :) - Susan Beebe
Great work. I especially like that it works on lists too. - Meryn Stol
my inbox might say different, but I like that :-) - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Wow, this is really neat! And it links into the idea I expressed earlier, re: reducing signup friction / enabling limited guest privileges. Imagine if I could embed one of my FF rooms on my personal web site, and enable people to subscribe to that feed by e-mail with just a couple of clicks... rather than saying "you can get e-mail notifications but you have to sign up for Friendfeed first." "sign up" -- though admirably lightweight on FF -- is still a huge barrier. - Adam Lasnik
is there a love button cause I dont like this option I LOVE this option..great work guys - (jeff)isageek
Three options I would like (1) Can I select "top 100" instead of "top 30"? (2) Could I select both "best of day" and "best of week"? (3) How about older timeperiods? I'd love to get an e-mail with stuff from last week or Mar 2009? Start & end dates? Anything to help me read FriendFeed off-line would be great since I spend long periods off-line at festivals (especially during summer time) or overseas. - Awesome job guys! - Mitchell Tsai
So this works on groups too, cool! But we still cannot see Best of for groups on the site on friends lists. :-( I have several friends lists that include just groups and when I select to view the best of the page it's empty (even though if I got to the individual best of for those groups there are entries there). - Kol Tregaskes
does anyone know of a web service that can do this? (I'm thinking weekly email updates of my favorite feeds/people) I don't think there's anything like friendfeed .. - Franc, a rememberer
That's a cool feature - Xitong Liu
Emails no longer get sent except for Subscriptions. The last non-sub email I recieved was July 15th, 2011. - Gimminy
I still get them. - AJ Batac
I get these every day. - Me
i get it - solncee
I still get it - AJ Batac
*jealous* I no longer get anything but subscription emails. - Bruce Lewis

"Not only did I feel like Steve Jobs’ pawn when I walked into Apple to purchase the device, but I also spent at least 8 hours following my purchase trying to justify the expense. Ironically I find that the majority of tweets on Twitter are attempts to do the exact same thing: justify the purchase after the fact. Unfortunately though, while Steve Jobs may be able to dictate that a few million people should buy a device, I am not a true Apple cult member. Instead, I like to act like a rational consumer, with the occasional splurge. While the splurge can be for a couple hundred dollars, my iPad purchase was over my typical “splurge threshold”. The “killer” apps on the iPad are currently TweetDeck and Netflix, both of which function on my existing computer. If I wanted another monitor (because two isn’t enough), I could go buy a large screen from dell for less than the cost of an iPad." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet
As someone who can take months before deciding whether to buy a new lens or camera body, I can't say I've ever suffered from buyer's remorse. Being an early adopter carries risks for those who don't evaluate their use case carefully. - Victor Panlilio
+100. I usually evaluate my own use case first, then wait for independent and user reviews. - LANjackal
Yeah, but this isn't the typical early adopter dilemma (e.g. the first iPhone). No one has been able to explain how this device *enables* you to do anything more than what you do now. Basically the sole virtue is that it is beautiful and easy enough for a child/grandmother to use. - Carter ♥ JS
Found the whole story annoying. Its like look at me I am special because I almost fell under Steve Jobs spell, but I managed to break the spell before it was too late, and yes I am tired and cranky. - Kim Landwehr

"These awe-inspiring pictures show the beauty of our night skies as seen at locations around the world. They were the winners of this year's International Earth and Sky photography contest. The images were chosen for as the best examples of how important and amazing the starry sky is and how it affects our lives, as well as how bad the problem of light pollution has become. The annual contest, which was organised by The World At Night, was open to all and around 200 entries were sent from over 30 countries." - RAPatton
"The overall winner was a breathtaking panoramic shot of the Poseidon temple in Greece, where the stars are almost drowned out by light pollution from Athens. Does Google’s Acquisition of Picnik Suggest That Google’s Picasa is Getting Ready to Seriously Challenge Yahoo’s Flickr Photo Sharing Site? | Thomas Hawk Digital Connection
"Google acquired image editing site Picnik today. Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but you can read the announcements by Picnik and Google on their respective blogs." - Kol Tregaskes from Bookmarklet
picassa better improves the tagging process (notification) and integration with google contacts - facebook photos are so much better in regard to that. - Chris Hofmann
Wow that's huge! Will Flickr continue to partner with Picnik?! How would that play out! - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
Picassa lacks social features but one thing that I do like very much is its inline Google Translate features - it's very nifty as it translates all the comments that's not written in your language to your language default.. and as such allows me to respond to comments from Russia with ease :) - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
Flickr says yes I think. - Kol Tregaskes
This has got to be the first time I see Yahoo partnering with Google on the product side (aside from search) am I right? - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
Interesting theory. Picasa ready to take on Flickr? - TomBonner
Doubt Piscsa can take up Flickr 4 now til they improve on the storage limits, accessibility, social networks, and more biz friendliness. - polou/indigo_bow

Google Responds To Privacy Concerns With Unsettlingly Specific Apology
From the Onion: '"We would like to extend our deepest apologies to each and every one of you," announced CEO Eric Schmidt, speaking from the company's Googleplex headquarters. "Clearly there have been some privacy concerns as of late, and judging by some of the search terms we've seen, along with the tens of thousands of personal e-mail exchanges and Google Chat conversations we've carefully examined, it looks as though it might be a while before we regain your trust."' - Mark Trapp from Bookmarklet
"Acknowledging that Google hasn't always been open about how it mines the roughly 800 terabytes of personal data it has gathered since 1998, Schmidt apologized to users— particularly the 1,237,948 who take daily medication to combat anxiety—for causing any unnecessary distress, and he expressed regret—especially to Patricia Fort, a single mother taking care of Jordan, Sam, and Rebecca, ages 3, 7, and 9—for not doing more to ensure that private information remains private." - Mark Trapp

"Hackers in Europe and China successfully broke into computers at nearly 2,500 companies and government agencies over the last 18 months in a coordinated global attack that exposed vast amounts of personal and corporate secrets to theft, according to a computer-security company that discovered the breach." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet

"Email has become the default form of communication for many of us—as evidenced by overflowing inboxes despite our best attempts to wrangle them—but actual voice communication still has its place. So we're wondering: When do you pick up the phone rather than sending another email?" - LANjackal from Bookmarklet
I never call anyone except to check to see if they're in office (on a different floor). I can't think of anything I can explain on the phone that I can't explain better in an email. If I think I can't effectively get my point across via email, I visit in person. Over the past week I've been collaborating with the Design department on my end *in person*. The lady I'm working with said she appreciated meeting in person as it saved her a lot of time not having email/screenshot/translating image ideas into word - LANjackal
I've learned this the hard way with certain people. There are some people who just don't deal well with written communication. Those people you have to phone, otherwise it will be a disaster for all involved. - Kenton

"So while the WebKit-based browser that comes with Android is decent, it's good to see mobile browser makers looking to give Google a little competition in the browser space. The latest companies that want in on the action are Opera, and ACESS, makers of the NetFront web browser which is currently available for Windows Mobile. NetFront supports HTML5 and other web standards and has a zippy JavaScript Engine." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet

"at PDC 2009 last November, Hachamovitch and Windows Division President Steven Sinofsky both set a kind of roadmap for the browser -- one which leads directly to MIX. Web developers attending the conference will need to see how the new browser functions, especially with respect to its all-new support for Direct2D rendering (a Windows-only feature that has potential to flatten its competition), as well as improved support and functionality with Silverlight (a cross-platform feature)." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet

"the new BlackBerry browser produced accurate Web pages, zoomed into and out of pages with reasonable speed (not exactly an iPhone-like rush, but not thumb-twiddling either), and scored a 100% on the Web Standards Project's Acid3 test. By contrast, Opera Mini (a third-party product considered the browser of choice by many current BB users) scores a 54% on the same test." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet

By the way, tomorrow FriendFeed will be officially declared dead. Again. http://scobleizer.com/2010... Sorry to be a buzz kill. :-)
Rubber bullets, that's all you got? - Micah
I hate it when that happens. - Brent - Yes I am
Micah: this time the bullets will have a bit more sting. - Robert Scoble
OMG OH NOEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!1 WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!! ELEVENTY-ONE111111!!!!!!11111 - Headless Gnad Kicker
How many lifes does FriendFeed have? Friendfeed's third life? You do remember this of course? http://ff.im/fyJ0R - sofarsoShawn
It'll take more than that to kill my buzz, Scoble. - Headless Gnad Kicker
^ you gotta say it in a John Wayne kinda voice. - Headless Gnad Kicker
SEE YOU IN HELL - Josh Haley
sofarsoShawn: I think we're on the ninth life of FriendFeed. It doesn't have many left. - Robert Scoble
(we're trying to push more traffic to your blog, Robert; but we can only dedicate so many resources. We can't promise a 50-comm thread any more, though it could still happen. Times are tight my friend :) - Micah
I hope this ends up being an upgrade to the Google reader sharing experience. - Matt M (inactive)
Mmmm... -the smiley must mean it's not that bad, unless the calls for 2012 are made .o, - Zu from AOD
Matt: it's not a Reader update. Unfortunately. Well, maybe it is if you look at it the right way. Reader has been deader than FriendFeed to me, though. - Robert Scoble
WTF ?? - Özkan Altuner
Dead is the new black. - Headless Gnad Kicker
I don't visit Reader half as much as I used to either. TechCrunch's story makes it sound like they are turning the Google Talk status into a Twitter/FB competitor. I'll just have to wait and see. :) - Matt M (inactive)
FF are a zombies. - Headless Gnad Kicker
Buzz cut? I doubt Google can do anything more than trim centimeters off the bangs. I don't know much about what this is except it sounds like the ability to incorporate feed sharing via Gmail. I'll come out and say that this won't even put a minor dent into people's existing Social Media services and behavior much less affect the existing FF community. People haven't been very adoptive of any of Google's Social Media initiatives and this won't be any different. - Mark Krynsky
In terms of the hang-out place for hardcore geeks and the best social media circlejerk in the Valley, FriendFeed was dead months ago... To keep poking the corpse everytime someone launches the latest 'social media revolution' basically is Necrophilia at this point. Have fun! *goes back to using FriendFeed* - Johnny from iPhone
From where I'm sitting, it's only gotten better over the past year. - Thom Kennon
Rumor of Friendfeed's demise have been.... - .LAG liked that
Robert, have you tried it? - Jesse Stay
Officially dead? I see no nothing official about FF! - Kol Tregaskes
Why do people even bother to respond to ridiculous comments like this anymore? Hasn't' anyone learned that every couple of weeks Robert shows up here and posts the same comment or a variation on the theme and everyone gets up in arms, Robert disappears again and we all go on with our lives as before. - Jeff P. Henderson
Hey, I have an idea. Every one of us ought to show up on Robert's Blog every two weeks and post a comment proclaiming Blogging is dead. ;-) - Jeff P. Henderson
Jeff, that's kinda my point. I'm not reading this as there is nothing official about it. - Kol Tregaskes
It's not really official until Facebook turns out the lights. - John (bird whisperer)
I don't know that Robert has decided to declare Friendfeed dead (perhaps another time) but instead that "people" will declare it dead. Beginning tomorrow. Or...well. today. :D - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Wow Scoble nails Facebook psychology WOW! Or Facebook nails us with their wits! That info about Zuckerburg being psychology minor I wonder gets him winning the social arena game 4 a long long time, perhaps! - polou/indigo_bow
Scoble KNEW! Traitor! :P - AJ Batac
That's absolutely terrible. FriendFeed could have been something absolutely wonderful. - Joshua Fears
it IS something wonderful. sadly, "shiny new toy" syndrome wins again. - Hieronymous Boosh
Funny, Google introduces a potential competitor to Friendfeed and Friendfeed participation and comments skyrocket! - Jeff P. Henderson
Friendfeed dead? heckz no, i see no petunias growing around here - Tim Jones
It's true! I saw FriendFeed declared dead (or deader) several times yesterday. FriendFeed is dead! Long Live FriendFeed! - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
