This is a fantastic idea. I was already considering storing a few static images of things like the London Underground map and other transport maps of areas I might visit. But proper apps would be even better.

OMG, yes. Let's also add maps for the museum you're in (replacing the entire paper brochure). You could even have downloadable audio tours. Of course how long would it take for Netflix to come out with "take a picture of the bar code and we'll add it to your queue" when you're in a video store. Heck, Amazon should do that with everything. Yes, this could really kill local retail.
- Cyrus Lendvay
wow what a great idea - I don't even have an iPhone and i think its a great idea!
- Marco(aureliusmaximus)
They discussed this already in relation to Starbucks and potentially Apple stores. They discussed the idea expanding beyond to other places. Currently they have an app that pops up in Starbucks inside iTunes to view recently played music. This article expands on it a bit. Old article: http://news.softpedia.com/news...
- Adam Helweh
This is a good idea for any GPS equipped phone ?
- Brian Sullivan
There was a similar system for Palm devices some years ago: "beaming" stations which could send apps to a Palm device via IR. I tried it at the Sony Metreon, which distributed an interactive floorplan. A little Googling shows they also installed the beaming stations at Pac Bell Park and similar public locations with lots of foot traffic.
- DGentry
There's no need to make them as intrusive as he describes. Just tag apps with one or more sets of coordinates and allow people to filter app store searches by location. The same applies to web pages in general. There are already ways to geocode web pages. If only some search engine would let you do something useful with that...
- Seth
@Cyrus We (edgelab) looked at Scanbuy's technology a few years ago - does just what you are talking about. Their best application (rolled out through a shell organization...for reasons that will become apparent shortly), IMO, was this http://www.wired.com/science...
- Ryan Kaisoglus
surreal - since usually you see lots of other partially as high buildings around something like this - here its lots of open space
- mike "glemak" dunn
I just heard that Dubai has a third of the world's cranes.
- Gabe
I wonder if the tower of Babel looked like that?
- Robert
I have a feeling the next September 11 won't be in New York.
- John Lam
Do I sense jealousy? I think it's incredible. About time someone built something impressive. The US should follow suit with a suitably impressive WTC memorial. As for a messed up society? Pff, when your own house is in order then go after someone elses.
- Mo Kargas
Robert, I was thinking exactly the same thing ;)
- Graham Garland
any taller and it'll scratch our precious ozone
- Pete Delucchi
Wow, that is awe-inspiring. I would be scared out of my mind to be on that thing when it is finished, let alone being the crane operator. Gives me the heeby geebies just thinking about it!
- Tony
Dubai must be an interesting place visually. All sorts of weird buildings there.
- Yolanda
2,684 ft (818m) in height! wow, that's over 1/2 a mile high!
- Susan Beebe
The same architect was going to build a 2400-foot casino resort here in Vegas before the FAA intervened and got it canceled. Something about it being in the way of planes.
- Chris Reed
no way in hell am I going to the top of that thing. imagine being an iron worker on the very top? well I guess it's like China, labor is replaceable
- clarke thomas
There are many over-the-top examples of Dubai architecture, but the one that really knocks my socks off is the project to build an entirely new city with extreme "green" ambition http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... I'm frequently amazed by the sheer quantity of projects like this happening in UAE.
- Jason Wehmhoener
What's Barad-dûr doing in the middle of Dubai??
- Will DeLuca
it'll be great when it's finished. Dubai, that is... Dubai will be great when it's finished...
- Andrew Terry
Reminded me of Gustav Doré's Tower Of Babel illustration: http://is.gd/UjL Amazing, truly.
- Madsimian
Ha! Commented before expanding comments to see all the "Tower of Babel" exclamations. It sure is a natural point of reference...
- Madsimian
Dubai: where Erector sets join together for REALLY big projects.
- Kevin C. Tofel
Very impressive piece of engineering and architecture!
- Jeff P. Henderson
Why? I don't understand why. It's like they are trying to prove something. But how many workers died building this vanity project?
- Liz
Liz it's not the Middle Ages. I am sure the building is not resting on the bones of the poor exploited workers.
- John Samuelson
this place looks like after a war! They might have the money, but haven't they heard about green? Let's see what happens when they will run out of oil. Anyway, that's a great building, but it doesn't fit the landscape.
- Dan V
World's largest building = tourist attraction.
- Tanath
Already had that happening before, but yes, it's getting worse. I've become adept at whipping out a charger when I'm near power
- Robyn Miller
excuses excuses - steve got a large "jobs juice" this morning
- Allen Stern
I usually describe my iPod Touch as a pocket computer that can also play media. The iPhone is a pocket computer that can also be used as a phone.
- Michael Connick
@rbonini, I have had to do a hard reboot at least once every other day. It sometimes takes me a minute to even get it to respond to a power button hold, and then longer because I can't move the slider.
- Robyn Miller
Battery life is the major hurdle the mobile phones need to conquer.
- Muthu Ramadoss
Do we need Intel to come in to picture for the processor at least with better performance and less power consumption. I think the processor has to scale up before these phones can smoothly support all the pc functions
- Umesh Kakkad
I predict the next iPhone will have a multicore processor
- Alan Cheslow
I been hearing the battery story for 5 years now! iPhone is nothing new, it is a PDA with Windows CE! Solve the battery problem and stop lying how many hour it will hold charge! You lucky if you can finish a DVD on a clean charge?
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
I cannot use the Camera or go into Photo album right now on iPhone - both crash every time. Starting a restore...
- Sean Alexander
The current iPhone has multiple processors. It has 3 ARM chips in it. 3G may have the ARM multi-core chips. Not sure. The power draw isn't the processor, it is the network, screen and GPS. This is why it lasts longer when that stuff is off.
- Kevin Goldsmith
from twhirl
Yes, just do not watch movies, no surfing the net, and no GPS! Is this like 8 years ago? Voice and SMS?
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
I wouldn't put up with that - #1 priority is reliability - it's a phone first. What happens in an emergency and it's frozen?
- David Andrzejewski
David: all my phones have crashed at some point or another. It's one reason why I carry three phones.
- Robert Scoble
I don't use phones. I like that. the joys of being unemployed is I don't want it.
- Noah David Simon
how about microcomputer rice cooker? can it crash while cooking?
- Pajama Domain
from twhirl
agree with Robert Scoble - my n95 crashes all the time, including while having phone conversation!
- Pajama Domain
from twhirl
I'd take my laptop with me so I could tweet in case something cool happens. Usually nothing happens, but that has never stopped me from tweeting.
- Suvi-Tuuli Engela
of-course she did, she knew YOU would NEVER steal her laptop.
- Katybeth
wasn''t there a great hoax story about the wifi protable toilets in the UK
- John Furrier
wow, i'd be thinking "whats this worth on ebay" - btw, i get that all the time - at conferences - "you sitting here for a minute i have to use the bathroom"
- Allen Stern
Yeah people around here do that all the time. A guy just did it to me the other day - I was with my 2yo. I looked like a trustworthy mommy, I guess.
- Christine Cavalier
That's a girl thing. I wouldn't ask a guy to watch my lappie, but I've asked many a girl while at a coffee shop. We stick together. :>)
- Wendy
I never do that... That's absolutely crazy!
- AJ Batac
I've seen this happen many times, most often at Starbucks. I may even have done it myself once or twice. Maybe it's a trusting Canadian thing eh?
- Mack D. Male
@Mack, I don't even do that here in Canada. :-P
- AJ Batac
She's like "That's Steve Rubel, if he steals my laptop I'll just find him on Twitter."
- Steve Lynch
from Alert Thingy
I would definitely take it with me. I would never trust a random person. I mean, I would expect any self respecting human being to walk away with it if they had the chance.
- The Kid
Kid - you'd never trust a random person? How many times a week do you hand your credit or debit card to a total stranger? (it's one of my pet examples.)
- Anthony Citrano
She'd already taken your photo with her camera in case you stole it.
- James Kendrick
maybe she was trying to pick you up...?
- Jason
from twhirl
nice jason - i will remember that for next time :)
- Allen Stern
How do you go to the bathroom when you are using wifi in a public place?
- Barak B
this is common behavior in the starbucks where i hotdesk
- Bill Seitz
What is wrong with this world when you can trust your Starbuckian neighbor to watch your Mac?
- Aaron deMello
I don't even ask people to watch the computer. I just go. Fast.
- Ekedstrom
If I see someone sitting nearby who also has a laptop and is web working, I'll ask him/her to keep an eye on my stuff. Usually, they ask me to return the favor when I get back. It's fine in a small Starbucks in Southern New Jersey. Definitely wouldn't do it in Manhattan. Otherwise, I've been known to leave my backback, coat and power adapter and just take my MBP to the ladies room with me. That way it's clear the seat is taken.
