Omg I love it! Lately I've been doing more wireframes than actual mockups, and I wanted them to be team-editable as well, so I was using Google Doc's drawing tool. This is way better. Great find!

Anyone had experience with Balsamiq? Wondering how mockingbird compares

Nice, but I don't think many clients are going to enjoy being told to 'just upgrade to a PROPER browser!' when they discover they can't view the wireframes in IE
- Duncan
"Proper: Of the required type; suitable or appropriate" Could have chosen a less aggressive word, but it sounds like IE isn't a browser of the required type, so the word is technically correct in this context. The question of whether IE *should* be improper is another matter.
- Kevin Fox
I don't think it's a case of whether it's a proper browser or not, regardless of the definition; the usefulness of the app would be somewhat stunted if one half of team have problems using it. Or at least, I hope I'm not the only one who's had clients who still use IE6, and, for one reason or another, can't upgrade. Anyway, I'll shut up now, this is beta software, just hope that moving forward, they at least support IE8!
- Duncan
There is no sane reason to be developing software for IE6 anymore as it's past for even Microsoft. Yeah, they still make some random updates to it but if some companies are stuck with IE6 (for other reasons than having some software that are binded to that specific version) some might ask if their security policy is working or not.
- Daniel Schildt
It's good to develop software that works in most browsers but there is no good reason go get stuck in the past while creating something totally new. Mockingbird is meant as development tool and if some client does not want to have properly working browser, it's their problem. Wireframes are just the beginning part of UI development so there isn't need that have this kind of software working in ancient browsers (as if developers would still mainly develop everything first for IE6...).
- Daniel Schildt
Interesting article explaining the observation that proprietary software tends to get worse with each release and open source tends to get better. I agree that many of the commercial software applications that I use seem to have "peaked" several versions ago. I also agree that an open source committer team is more empowered than a commercial software architect to push features/enhancements out of scope. Jacob asserts that no commercial software company could resist pressure from IBM to support DB2 but Django does. However, I wonder if this trend is just a matter of software maturity and time. Most of the commercial software applications are older than the open source ones and have time to "jump the shark" with features that don't belong. Some FOSS programs will, no doubt, be tempted to add bad features after the good features have been added. The better projects will resist. Examples include Apache HTTPD and Struts. These projects started over when they were done.
- Seth Gottlieb
I agree with that article is that opensource big power is that decision process. Remember the decision making process in tips ... ;)
- Nicolas Dufour
any chance we could convince them to open source tips?

I liked this part: ---Users specify high-level desires: *“99%ile latency for accessing this data should be <50ms” *“Store this data on at least 2 disks in EU, 2 in U.S. & 1 in Asia”

One of my old companies ended their pension plan. They gave me the option of rolling it over to an IRA or taking straight cash. Being I'm several thousand dollars in debt, I took the cash and the tax penalty. Starting over with a clean slate is something that I need right now.

I have a job and I'm still in debt. Stupid grad school.
- Derrick
I can only dream of such things... :/
- JA Castillo
Funny enough, I've got that coming too, but I'm using mine to try to tide me over due to my "independent" employment status. I shudder about taxes next year though. Watch those taxes Sean.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Currently my credit is so bad that I cannot finance a car, and getting a mortgage is out of the question entirely. The tax hit is going to hurt, but I haven't worked a full time job until this month so my income this year is already going to be way lower.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
I CAN HAZ? ;-) Congratulations. It's awesome to get out of debt.
- Jason Huebel
I have a contact on my phone called "Spammer" which I put all the numbers of the collection agencies that call me in it. I get more calls from them in a week than real people. :(
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
That's good. Yep, get the debt monster if at all possible. I'm waiting until my wife can work next school year after she has her degree to get started.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
And maybe I can squeeze enough out of it to get me a shiny new laptop as well. :D
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
If your debt is with a 3rd party collection agency, remember you can negotiate your balance. I would start with 40% and not go higher than 60%. Don't be afraid to play hardball with them. They bought your debt for literally 1% of the cost and if you're in TX they can't garnish you and probably won't sue (it's not worth it unless you have tens of thousands and in a garnish state). Also tell them you want their line removed from your credit report.
- Andrizzle Gizzle
Excellent advice, Andrea. I'd already prepared to write them all certified letters to prove the debt in the first place, and take it from there. There's some good things in your comment that I didn't even think about, and I would almost guarantee they'll give me a deal for paying in full.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Does Derrick kissing Sean constitute a crush? Debating.

Definitely, I worked in credit counseling for 4 years then I did debt collecting for 2. It's really about setting your own terms, and if they won't agree, you end the call. You may also be able to send them a letter telling them to c&d contact with you via phone and/or mail. Also in our office at least at the end of the month you would get the best deal because everyone has a quota to hit, some places have quotas on the 15th and 30th.
- Andrizzle Gizzle
My sister had a collection agency bugging her for a bit. I gave her the money to pay it off, but it was still less than she owed. I told her to tell the people that was all she had and they could have it by the next day. She didn't think they'd go for it. Of course they did. They tried to haggle with her but in the end, they accepted what she had.

Yes we would sometimes take an extra 5-10% off if it could be western unioned on the 29th or something. The collectors get a commission based on what they get, so especially if you are talking a few thousand they will more willing to deal. If someone called us on the 29th with an offer to western union $3k on a $10k collection we would accept it as long as it was by the end of the month - if it was the first, we would tell them to fuck off.
- Andrizzle Gizzle
This is an attempt to collect a debt and any information gained will be used for that purpose.

I've always considered you to be like a brother. Like the brother I never had. You are as attractive as you are intelligent. You are a man among men. A pillar of the community. A shining example that chivalry is not dead, and that generous charity to brown-nosing online acquaintances is truly the noblest of all virtues!

Very good! Great use of extra cash. Hope your putting a portion away for the rainy/tech lust day. ;)
- CW™
Absolutely, CW. I'm already pricing new laptops and a bigger TV, but the majority of the money is going to the creditors and saving for a new car. :D

How hard, percentage-wise, is the tax hit?
- Josh Haley
20%, and another 10% for taking money out of a retirement plan early.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Hey, as far as creditors go, the IRS is a good one to have. Just make sure to file the "I'll pay you this much every month" form with your return and SOME amount of money, and then keep up with the payments. And never ever ever EVER put income tax money on a credit card. And hey again -- congratulations on wiping out the debt! :-)
- Ladybug Heather
Is negotiating a 40% repayment of your debt ethical? I guess the original creditors have already given up on you if they sold to a collector but still.... seems weird to get something for 40% of the agreed upon value.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Thanks! It shouldn't be too bad. With how little I've actually earned this year (freelancing is hard, and not profitable starting out) it about evens out how much I'll owe versus last year.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
@Daniel Exactly. The original creditor has already sold what I owed them to the collection agencies for a fraction of the cost. Giving them 40% will still earn them a profit.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)

"The human is one of the world's most widespread species, and is present on all continents. After a gestation period of nine months, the young usually live in the parents' nest for around 16 years. While the parents are out foraging for food, juveniles are looked after in large groups by other adults. In adolescence, the offspring adopt a more nocturnal lifestyle and engage in ritualized activities of drinking fermented liquids and dancing to rhythmical sounds, which scientists believe may help them find a mate. Humans usually pair for life, retiring from most social activity and moving into brick and concrete nests once a partner is found. Pairs produce an average of 2 young. They are known to adopt other species as pets, particularly dogs (canis lupus familiaris) and cats (felis catus). The human diet is very adaptable to regional crop varieties and personal taste, with some groups able to live almost exclusively on chipped potatoes and sugary drinks. Groups of humans are often fed...

"It’s the most basic innovations which can make the largest impact. The LifeStraw costs about $3 USD and will filter about 700 liters of water. That’s a two liter a day for a year. As clean drinking water becomes more scarce, due to decreased snow fall and changing climate, we may come to rely on less than ideal sources for water. It’s comforting to know that these types of products are being developed cost effectively."

That's pretty amazing. I didn't think of water purification done in this format. Would make an excellent survival tool when backpacking, aside from the obvious advantages to more disadvantaged countries.

Straws such as this (I have one in my backpack currently and there are two other brands at the local REI) have been tested by the US Military and have been found to be acceptable for freshly collected rainwater but fail when filtering stagnant water. Viruses are able to make it through the straw's filter and require separate chemical treatments lasting a minimum of four hours. This is a...
