@reffervescent I am also v interested in helping everyone else understand some of what librarians know about search & credibility
how we're wiring up credibility ... especially the the ability to regain it if and when it slips ... especially if it's ME doing the slipping ... is what led me to find tools like http://muuter.com/ and begin to plead for inclusion of this capability in next iteration of collective cognition tools. i know i can get 'noisy' at times ... others don't ... but i do ... so i do try to come back to some sense of center ... maybe i wouldn't *permanently* lose connections over occasional, unintended infractions. - michael silverton

@biz ---> "Thursday, August 06, 2009 Denial of Service Attack On this otherwise happy Thursday morning, Twitter is the target of a denial of service attack. Attacks such as this are malicious efforts orchestrated to disrupt and make unavailable services such as online banks, credit card payment gateways, and in this case, Twitter for intended customers or users. We are defending against this attack now and will continue to update our status blog as we continue to defend and later investigate." - Susan Beebe from Bookmarklet

How Gawker Ripped Off My Newspaper Story (Note: Us FriendFeeders are equally as guilty for this practice)
"Gawker's version of my story, headlined " 'Generational Consultant' Holds America's Fakest Job," begins by telling its readers to "Meet Anne Loehr" -- with a link to my story but no direct mention of The Post. It then condenses her biography: "Loehr is 44. She spent the entire decade of the 90s running hotel and safari operations in Kenya." That's information I got after an hour-plus phone call with Loehr and typing out 3,000 words of notes. The bulk of the posting consists of Loehr's own words, her thoughts on this generation's affinity for reality television and its supposed aversion to Nike products. (Still no mention of The Post.) For those little nuggets, I drove a half-hour to Fairfax County's Tower Club, and attended her two-hour "Get Wise with Gen Ys" session and recorded it. Then the work got painstaking: It took about four hours to transcribe the session. (Are you playing mournful melodies on your violin yet?) After the quotations from Loehr, the Gawker posting is a... more... - Brad Williamson from Bookmarklet

Who do u follow on Friendfeed for all your tech news & discussion?
Robert Scoble, Atul Arora, Building43 and bunch of others - Amit Nangare
You, mo fro. Scobs, Tim O, Louis, too - Christopher Galtenberg
I don't follow one actual person. I think all of the people I follow add something to tech discussions. - Shevonne

Scoble, Cksthree, and Leo, oh my! - adam garrett
@Zee: I agree with Kelly W. - I'm getting a lot of value out of the information I find here in FF Rooms that has really great conversational value to iterate from. - Jason Cronkhite

For tech news/discussion, I follow groups, not people. The people I do follow, I follow just because they're interesting - LANjackal
I second what @LANjackal said! - Miss Elle
In tech discussion I follow both people and groups, but within groups there are again people, so I say who I follow, not what. For me FriendFeed is an aggregator of people before contents. When I receive notifications about new post via email from a group, I filter by author to discover the most rilevant discussions - Roberto from fftogo
No one -- I follow blog feeds (like rww) on Twitter. More efficient. - Sean McBride
@sean so not more efficient...what happens when you miss one of their tweets? - Zee.
Not a problem -- I periodically look at the Twitter home pages of the most important blogs. For me, too much of the "tech" discussion on Friendfeed is chit-chat about shiny new gadgets -- not very informative about cutting-edge tech trends. - Sean McBride
I just noticed that rww https://twitter.com/rww currently has 172,685 followers on Twitter. - Sean McBride
mostly the same (tech, especially Semantic Web) folks as I've got in Bloglines - only I rarely look at Bloglines these days - Danny Ayers
Efficiency: it takes just three keystrokes -- "rw" + Enter -- to get to rww's Twitter home page, using Firefox autocompletion in the address box. Same deal for all the other important Twitter feeds. Fast. And I get a simple list of the latest stories for quick scanning, with no sludge. - Sean McBride
Mashable, MG Siegler, you, Kol, Robert Scoble, Leo Laporte, Bwana, Chris Pirillo - though like other comments, I follow them because they are interesting. The news is an added benefit. - jcunwired
i love Gary V & Brogran - but for tech news? naa... - Zee.
They generally seem to be behind the most strategic tech trends -- discussion on those matters for the most part doesn't occur on Friendfeed. - Sean McBride

Zee - have you checked out http://www.feedstats.info/zee - offers some interesting stats around FF - Mike Bracco
Robert Scoble and Leo Laporte - J. Abdul-Qahhar
feedstats.info rocks -- great stuff, Mike. Data mining social media -- it's going to be huge. (And perhaps a bit scary.) - Sean McBride
Addendum: alleyinsider has 544,416 Twitter followers. Getting over the half million mark is quite significant. Is Pete Cashmore (Mashable) the leading tech guru on Twitter in terms of followers? - Sean McBride
Sean - a agree on scary. I'm the type of person that signs up for every social media site and always uses real identity - someone wouldn't have to try that hard to figure out what I'm about and use that in a nefarious manner. I always rationalize it by saying that compared to a celebrity there is not that much info out there. But not sure if that rationalization makes it any less scary. - Mike Bracco
Mike -- the information could be abused in a wide variety of ways -- by government agencies around the world, organized crime, personal enemies, etc. We really haven't figured out these social media data mining tools yet, and their full implications. But for the time being, building the tools is fun and intellectually interesting. - Sean McBride

Lorin: that list matches one of my lists pretty closely, but not good for filtering results from Iran. - Robert Scoble
Robert: True, but that wasn't the question. Actually, my sources for other topics (like #iranelection) are quite a bit different from my tech sources. Like you, I use a variety of groups (in a variety of tools) to aggregate all of the topics I follow. I guess that's one of the reasons I keep heading back to Tweetdeck. Tried Mixero and the latest revs of Seesmic. But I always come back... more... - Lorin Olsen
I still consume hundreds of tech feeds (blogs, sties, etc). Recently, I've begun to do a lot of redaction. So I consume feeds from other feed consumers. I find it remarkable that we are sharing Friendfeed sources here and Google Reader sources on a different thread. Sometimes, the best content comes from reduction of other feeds. It's like eating good reductions as the basis for good recipes. - Lorin Olsen
sean mcbride - those numbers you mention - you should always put a *** and note that some of them are on the default list - for example, alley insider would have a couple thousand subs if it wasnt for getting on the list, i know we've beat the list to death here but it should always be noted. - Allen Stern

Twitter creator Jack Dorsey on user retention, Facebook comparisons | Los Angeles Times
"Twitter is brainstorming ways to improve the service so newbies get hooked right away, said site chairman and creator Jack Dorsey over lunch in Washington, D.C., last week. The best way to do that is to connect users immediately with others they'll be interested in. Dorsey's co-founder Biz Stone told The Times in February that the Suggested Users list that's presented to brand-new users is a step toward accomplishing that goal. A similar list was around in 2006 when Twitter launched." - Brad Williamson from Bookmarklet
NOTE: If you like this article, make sure to join the "Media News And Analysis" group... http://friendfeed.com/media-n... - Brad Williamson
Yeah... you keep delivering new users a pool of 20 or so suggested people to follow. I'm sure these newbs will instantly become addicted to the service once they have a collection of people to follow who they don't give a damn about. - Brad Williamson
Unfortunately, the Suggested Users list is now 217 names. They should rotate people on & off & keep it to 20-50 people. They should also let you search bios like they did before so you could find people in same occupation or geographic area. This used to allow this. - Liz

"The problem is that Twitter’s Stone was entirely disingenuous about this change. He blamed the newbie users, suggested that @replies were bad, and called this kind of tweet “fragmented.” He did everything but admit that there was a technical reason to shut them down." - Daniel J. Pritchett
I wonder if the technical reason is true, even. Perhaps this is just another smokescreen. I can't imagine what else it would be... - Stephen Foskett
@SFoskett there's always the "easing celebrity frustration" theory: http://ff.im/2QZIr - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
with all due respect to everyone - is the Twitter change really that big a deal? Most of you already follow hundreds or thousands of people. There are lots of ways to find people (Twibes, WeFollow, search, ad nauseum...). Yes, transparency from Twitter would be great and yes, FF rules, but let's get on with it already. - Stuart Miniman
Stu, this change wasn't that serious. But Twitter is out of touch with how people use and view the service, and has become too "important" to too many people. They need to be careful or the whole house of cards will come down - Stephen Foskett
1) The change was serious to me because it's how I prefer to receive Tweets and 2) they changed what had been a choice of the user into an enforced decision. Twitter is inflexible enough that they shouldn't have taken away one of the few things that the user can control (whose Tweets you can see). - Liz
Stuart, no it's not a big deal. It's the air of pretentiousness and poor approach that gets me. They continually are deciding what's right for us on our behalf and going against what their users want. It's emblematic. If this were the first issue they ever had, the outcry would be much less. It's just one thing after another. - Louis Gray
Interesting, because to me it's a big deal. - Jamie
Stephen, Twhirl includes pretty nice support for FriendFeed, think the next step in adoption will bring more FF compatible clients - Mike Chelen
I just wish there were as many blackberry apps for friendfeed as there are for twitter. (Even though they all have major drawbacks). Or, if fftogo was made the official mobile site, so I could change me settings and many other things I can only do on a pc. - Matt Thompson from fftogo

I just clicked on #fixreplies on my twitter home page under "Trending topics" and i recieved all the tweets that include the "#fixrelies" from people i'm not even following - so this whole thing of blocking @replies is for NOT - it's not rational - Aline Ohannessian
hmmm another thought: so basically when someone RT's (Reetweets someone else) others won't be able to see the RT unless they are following them??? doesn't this also defeat the purpose of ReTweeting?? - Aline Ohannessian
Aline: Retweets will still be seen because Twitter looks at them as a mention and not a reply. According to Twitter, a @reply is any tweet that begins with @username. A tweet that has characters, such as RT, before the @username is a "mention" and will still show up in your replies tab on your Twitter homepage. {EDIT} Also, you'll still be able to see all tweets for a particular user or keyword on Twitter search. - Sharon McPherson
Oy...Thanks @Sharon! this whole thing is sooo confusing and a little cryptic, dont' ya think? :o) - Aline Ohannessian

Is This Why Twitter Changed Its Replies Policy? http://www.readwriteweb.com/archive...
Our speculation on what the technical issues are. - Marshall Kirkpatrick
One of my suspicious suppositions was that they are trying to drive their Suggested Users feature as the primary source for new people to follow which they would monetize if they haven't already. I like the Facebook-like "people you follow also follow these people" idea you suggest. But honestly, is Twitter valuable enough to enough people yet to offer a premium paid service? - Gregg Scott
good stuff. Venturebeat offers this slant...and variation on the theme http://venturebeat.com/2009... - paisano
Can't see that as a big money-maker. Few of us used the all-replies feature. I'm wondering if Twitter doesn't get it's own service now. - phil baumann

Justin Long
Decided to hang out more at FF for a while, because Twitter has messed up its replies system
I don't get why they would do it without either (a) asking and listening to feedback, (b) engineering a replacement FIRST, or (c) at least looking at the metrics to see if there were a lot of situations where people received a response from a friend's friend who they didn't follow, and subsequently subscribed to the person... sigh... - Justin Long
It is hard for me to believe that only 2% have chosen this option. There have been thousands of Tweets about this choice being eliminated. - Liz
5% of american adults use twitter... how many american adults? not sure what the total over-18 population is, but 5% of 300 million would be 15 million. Thousands isn't much in 15 million people. still got twitter's attention tho! - Justin Long
I think FriendFeed is certainly getting more buzz and interest as Twitter shuns users. - Joe Manna
Should try to start a "join friendfeed if you hate the reply system on twitter #fixreplies" thread on twitter - Justin Long
@Justin you should probably just say join FriendFeed regardless of what you think about Twitter - Mark Bockenstedt
could be. but a lot of my friends are not the type to join more than one service, and all THEIR friends are on twitter. makes it hard to move. - Justin Long

Robert, glad to hear. Excited to see you and hear your news. :) - Tamar Weinberg
No need to apologize, Robert. The only person who should be apologizing is coldbrew. - Tamar Weinberg
Weinberg, instead of being an uptight boob, you should know that life is short, and the you should relax and take it easy. If you could not glean that he is now attending SXSW, I am without the ability to clarify without making fun of you. - coldbrew
Apologizing? Because you can't comprehend English? - coldbrew
"don’t write if your life is in turmoil." that's indeed very good advice. You were already so wise back then. :) - Meryn Stol
coldbrew: "we"' could represent an entity and may not necessarily include Robert. So yes, I am justified in asking a legitimate question. Again, instead of being a smartass, let me ask Robert the question, and do me a favor - don't get involved. - Tamar Weinberg
Please block me if you cannot deal with my pointing out that you asked a stupid question. Do not act like FF is your domain to have a private conversation, that is for email. And, if you are that uptight you probably need a break anyway. I meant no harm, and you blew this way out of proportion. - coldbrew
"There is no such thing as a stupid question." Clearly, you are just above us all. In any event, this isn't the place to hijack Robert's thread, and my question was not intended to do that either. I have no idea why you considered it your place to do so, but hey, the rest of the world will be the judge of who is the stupid one. Have a nice day. - Tamar Weinberg
Yo, yo, yo, knock it off. Geesh! - Robert Scoble
Sorry, Scoble. I was shooting for levity (as one might at 4am when they are still at the office). My girlfriend says I'm turning 12 this year :) - coldbrew

Coldbrew, with regard to "meeting people in person", have you noticed you're the only one not posting under your real name? - Meryn Stol
Stol, will you be at SXSW? I think I'm now heading down there and that would be cool. - coldbrew
Mohomed, ask my references... But if you really in doubt, I think I can manage to provide some id. I don't think that anyone doubts that Robert's name is Robert though. - Meryn Stol
Coldbrew, no, I live in The Netherlands, and I don't like flying. (plus this would be really expensive of course). - Meryn Stol
I respect you, Stol. I just don't believe in taking privacy lightly. I know this will present some problems for me, and I can handle it. It is quite obvious that using an alias scares people here that can't fathom the idea. - coldbrew

Robert, I have in my own world, lived your first 2 sentences when I lost my job. It is indeed hard to do that and I haven't met anyone yet who can breeze through it. I so agree with not letting the "cat"-harsis out of the bag when that happens. Well done. - Melanie Reed
Robert - I am very excited for what lies ahead for you! You can write your own ticket, so this will be fun. Personally, I think you should be the CMO for Friendfeed You already evangelize the heck out of it and you clearly understand the value of it! :) Cheers!! Wishing you all the best!!!!! - Susan Beebe

Louise wondering if it is possible to spend your entire life going to meetings?
Louis Gray
SocialToo shows that more than 1/2 of my Twitter unfollows each day are from those who followed on the same day, hoping to be auto-followed.
gross - Mike English
How would they keep score otherwise, Louis? It's not like people are looking to expand their range of knowledge or anything. Get with it, sheesh ;) - Philip Tomlinson
Louis, that's an excellent point. I should deduct a point from those people, and enable some way for people to choose not to follow those that have done that before. Right now you can blacklist each one of them manually though. - Jesse Stay
I see this a lot. Thank goodness I don't have auto-follow on. - Kol Tregaskes
That is nasty. You should publish a list, so people know to avoid them. - Aram Zucker-Scharff from twhirl
that's kind of tricky, sometimes I follow people, yoiu know just because, then I find they're WANK WANK boring, annoying etc, but yes, I usually keep following people until I find out what their feed's about - sofarsoShawn
wow interesting - Zee.
That was my sense as well as I get so many email notifications of new follows but my actual numbers only rise slowly. Must be people looking for automatic refollows. - Liz
Allen Stern

If you believe the only people that matter in social media are the a-listers, you're wrong. That's like believing the best and most talented musicians are the ones found on commercial radio. Chances are, there are hundreds of more talented people undiscovered in the underground.
What's funny is that if you went outside of the social media circle, nobody knows who the A listers are. It's very strange. - Patricia
I don't think it's odd/strange that people don't know - i think it's odd/strange that people don't realize how insignificant many of the a listers are outside of the small circle in the business. The world is a big place! - Patricia
Very true, I was demonstrating Qik to some people in tech PR over the summer and they'd never heard of Robert Scoble. Very odd. - Martin Bryant
Well said. A-listers can be important if they have important things to say, but the popularity of a personality is no guarantee of the truth or relevance of ideas. Bad ideas spread just as easily as good ones, perhaps more so when entropy's factored into the equation. The desire to be an A-lister is a remnant from the last century. The good thing about the web: it's possible to discover those hidden troves of talent and bring them into the light. That's the work of a true A-lister. - phil baumann
Many good points. I especially like Phil's "the popularity of a personality is no guarantee of the truth or relevance of ideas" - Jennifer Leggio
@jennifer me too. especially now since "popularity' can be fabricated so easily. - Patricia
which is why I love promoting indie artists on my internet radio station. A whole wealth of relatively unheard talent. Major label artists aren't necessarily any more talented than indie ones, just had a break, or some record company exec thinks they can profit - the major labels aren't interested in the music anyway. - Ian May
sadly, I encounter all too often that a very good voice will struggle to get any eyeballs because of things like going against the grain etc. For all of the nets capacity to be the great equaliser, it still suffers from the same flaw as everything else - human nature. - alphaxion
A good point indeed. A-List status does infer a certain set of skills and talents as well as some charisma but too often folks confuse that with authority of deep knowledge. For instance "Twit" is fun and entertaining, but if you are counting on Leo for accurate technical info you are in deep trouble. - Soulhuntre from twhirl
Why does this topic keep coming up? Seems like every week we see some variation of 'the A-List is dead!' Honestly, if it weren't for posts slamming the A-List, I doubt anyone would think about it anymore. - Akiva Moskovitz
@soulhuntre, lots of examples of a listers these days with zero talent and skills (not referencing social media, just overall). today, A list is all about who's willing to push themselves in front of others than work their way there. :) - Patricia
Regards A-listers. Isn't it true in most circles that very few people outside of that circle or interest in that circle know those in it? For example, I take not the slightest interest in fashion, and have heard of most of the people that my wife will sometimes mention. She looks at me incredulously and says "You've never heard of THEM?" - Ian May
@ian, A listers in fashion are usually designers unless you work in the business. I think it's a really different comparison. Designers aren't influencing business choices. - Patricia
How many people know who Walt Mossberg is? He's the most powerful person in the tech press and I bet that 98% of Americans would have no clue who he is. He can move entire markets. - Robert Scoble
@robert scoble, lots of people do. he's a major reporter for the WSJ. The post is about social media. Walt is not a social media A lister. he's a general tech writer who has been in the business since i was a kid. - Patricia
I think everyone is a star on friendfeed - Kyle Weller
Patricia: lots of people do know who he is, right. But most do not. So, finding someone who doesn't know who he is isn't evidence of anything. - Robert Scoble
I have my own A list for tech bloggers, and it often doesn't match posted lists. But I'd also like to know who are the other A list-type bloggers. The most influential social-issues bloggers, the lifestyle bloggers, the philosophical bloggers. My interests aren't limited to tech. - Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)
Patricia: exactly. But in Social Media these same influence circles exist. Louis Gray can get me to see a new company or product. Someone who isn't as well known would have a tougher time. - Robert Scoble
It is best to keep an open mind an decide for yourself who is important for you! It does take some work and time to discern the difference in people. - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Jack: just search Google for the topic you are interested in and add the word "blogger." Google is the ultimate keeper of the "A list." - Robert Scoble
I agree. I'm a nobody, but I'm freaking awesome. Check my feed. It's true! - Derrick
For instance, looking for blogs about philosophy? Search Google for this: http://www.google.com/search... - Robert Scoble
@Robert, how is that different/better than doing a Google Blog Search?... http://www.google.com/blogsea... ...Doing a regular search, results vary considerably depending on whether you append blog, blogs, blogger, bloggers. - LogEx
Thanks, Robert. Now why didn't I think of that? ;) - Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)
Patricia: to me the A list isn't about influence, it's about access. We can all influence. Not everyone can get into Google press conferences, for instance. - Robert Scoble
Patricia: I don't always have clarity of thought but I do always have lots of friends on FriendFeed! :-) - Robert Scoble
Patricia, McCain should have chose you as a running mate, you sure know how to talk! ;-) - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
@robert, and as my pr has said i'm a big fan. @igor, i'm honored you've noticed. i know you don't pick on just anybody :) - Patricia
Wow, Robert showing his human side! +1 - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
nicely put. noone knows who will be the influencers that will matter next/soon. - Ben Watson from twhirl
I think what the social media tools do is create pockets of A-listers for many different interests. There are a handful in computer security. There are no big-time-A-Listers for all subjects as hollywood would like because there's no money in marketing the heck out of people. It also helps equate a bit of knowledge or experience with A-list status and keeps people's "expert" status confined to particular areas of expertise. No more actors being "experts" on politics, international relations, & the economy! - Chris Tobkin
Wow. A lot of interesting comments (though no one ever declared the a-list dead...). Robert, thanks for chiming in. I agree with your point about Mossberg. Most consumers have no idea how much he influences what they do. Same can be said for some social industry pundits. But there are a heck of a lot more voices out there that people should be hearing in addition to a-listers -- and I'm tired of hearing "so-and-so said this but I haven't seen (insert a-lister) say anything about it yet so I'll wait." - Jennifer Leggio
Interesting, I went on to TwitThat and checked on the Most Read Tweets column and none of them was in English. I think all people are important within narrowly defined fields, including that of social media, but are not universally "important" people. There's a huge world outside there that doesn't even read English language Tweets...who are their A-listers, I wonder. - Liz
In the end, what this discussion really sums up to is that our society is not our technology. The tools we think connect us only serve as longer arms to to tap our shoulders with. No matter how easy communication becomes, if the culture doesn't improve, we'll always go back to our own club houses and erect our own pop star which are like the nodes within our own fictional country/society. In the end, I think saying A listers don't matter is just as irrelevant as saying A listers matter. - Fake Name
Truth is the answer to the question won't really benefit the non-A-listers nor would they hurt the A listers. It's what some called fictional reality. It will always exists as long as the same people from the same culture interact with the same kinds of society. - Fake Name
The key for those bothered will always be in a new structure, not a "pat on the back" motivation even though some might trudge on further. One cannot expect democracy to flourish under monarchy no matter how possible it is for people to have a vote underneath it. - Fake Name
I was mentioned on C-SPAN2 during the RNC--does that make me an A-lister? ;P - thepete

You have GOT to be kidding me! How could they have kept Kenley??? With that outfit???
Lesser of two evils - she made it by the skin of her teeth. Previews for next week don't look promising... - Victor Ryden
Kenley is such a one note designer. yawnfest - Theda
I was surprised she stayed, too, especially after she acted so bitchy to Tim, but I guess they wanted another week of drama. From the previews, looks like she's going to do the same thing to Heidi. It's obvious now who the final 3 will be. They start running away from the others towards the end. - Trish R
She scraped by by the skin of her sarcastic teeth. I think Suede's continued suckage cumulatively got him in the end, not just for last night. - Steve Isaacs
Kenley should have gone home. Suede's might have been boring, but at least it fit the genre better than hers. And seriously, Tim Gunn needs to bitch slap her. - rachel
