If you’re angry about race, but not particularly interested in understanding why, you probably like Crash. If you’re black and believe in the curative qualities of yet another “dialogue around race,” you probably liked Crash. If you’re white and voted for Barack Obama strictly because he was black, you probably liked Crash. If you’ve ever used the... - http://misterjt.tumblr.com/post...
I refused to watch it after hearing a reviewer describe it as "an important movie about race" without actually saying anything substantive about how that was true. Just wasn't interested.
- Jennifer Dittrich
My hatred of Crash is like a searing white hot point burning in my brain. I hated it so much I was texting Akiva about how much I hated it while I was still in the cinema watching it. When it started winning awards I literally started screaming obscenities. What a piece of shit.
- veo
I agree. It's shit. Definitely the worst ever winner of the "Best Picture" Oscar of all time. It's only popular because of it's A-list cast and because it's pretending to be balanced and progressive.
- James Myatt
Because of veo, I'm probably going to die young.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I mean: Because of veo, I will never see Crash and I share his hatred for it by proxy.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Until this post, I don't think I even heard of the movie. Ah, blissful ignorance shattered forever.
- Michael R. Bernstein
I literally watched up until the last ten minutes. I couldn't take it any longer. I have no idea how it ends and don't care.
- Derrick
i think crash was a decent movie, mostly due to the cast members not named ludacris. but the zOMGTHISSUCHADEEPIMPORTANTMOVIEABOUTRACE hype was some bullshit. it was neither deep nor stereotype shattering. but some of the twists were interesting.
- tiffany
As an LA resident, I hated it. Nobody interacts like these people. You never ever run into the same people all the time in this city and Terrance Howard's emasculated man-child was on some bullshit. "Hey mayne, it's real hard being black in these LA streets, mayne." Ugh.
- Jason Toney
for real: you're expecting reality from a movie jason?
- tiffany
Not reality. Honesty. Nothing about that movie was honest. Not the characters or the interactions. EDIT: See, Training Day, the tv shows The Shield and The Closer as much more honest portrayals of police and race in LA. Also, the lesser seen Boomtown and Southland.
- Jason Toney
To further my rant, the real problem with Crash is that it equates racism with prejudice and the moral of the story is that "we're all prejudiced so nobody's at fault for racism. Particularly you, white people." #getthefuckouttahere.
- Jason Toney
we don't disagree really. what i liked about it were that the stories intertwined and most of the characters weren't entirely good or entirely bad. but that could have been done with a monoracial cast. and crash was, most definitely, saved from being total crap by the performances of actor's not named ludacris. it CERTAINLY wasn't important or transformative. i just don't have any vitriol towards it. i've seen way better movies and i've seen way, way worse.
- tiffany
a sure way to have hate for this movie? Go see it with well-meaning and well-loved white friends who are very uncomfortable talking about race who, after seeing the film, LOVED IT.
- Jason Toney
We had Paul Haggis (writer/director of Crash) at school to come talk to our students. It was all I could do to bite my tongue and not go off on some ish that might've cost me my job.
- Derrick
heh. i agree with your LAist review :-). i think crash tried way too hard to be The Race Movie, rather than just a movie about people.
- tiffany
My vitriol for the film stems from two things. Firstly the fact that it's a three hour movie and uses that entire running time to POUND the same SERIOUSLY FLAWED moral lesson over and over without any hint of subtltey. It's totally ham fisted and treats the viewer like a moron. Secondly, it completley apes PTA's "Magnolia", which happens to be my favorite movie. The structure is almost...

"Crash" is the sort of movie that portrays the diversity of a big city in the way that folks from small white towns think "diversity" happens. As a native NYer, I say pah. PAH. (Also, got to meet the screenwriters through my mfa program, they were actually decent guys in person.)

Chris may talk more, but he's much more interesting. Chris also has much better taste in music. Scott thinks he's funny, but he's way too childish.
- James Myatt
I can't stand Chris' opening 'cheesy' tune, he's been using that for far too many years and no redo will help.
- Kol Tregaskes
The opening cheesy tune is epic. Its my sign of "you're early/late for work" If im in the car and i hear it, then Ill be on time for work. Chris is much easier to listen to. Scott (who is a nice guy and i got to see the Scott Mills Musical in Edinburgh earlier this year), you just feel he plays far too much r&b songs. Its a shame Mark Chapman has left the show.
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
I don't listen to either but Scott Mills was a local radio DJ around my parts (er, region (er, here in Hampshire (man, that's a lot of double entendres to avoid))) so he gets my vote.

"The officer ordered the man to stop and show his hands, but the suspect tried to run away, said Assistant Police Chief Pugel. The officer then fired several rounds at the fleeing suspect, he added." I am at a loss as to why it's reasonable, let alone lawful to kill someone for running away from the police.
- winckel
from Bookmarklet
Well, when he's killed four other police officers and he's been on the run, and has a history of violent crimes, the police might find they have just cause in killing someone, running away from them or not.
- Derrick
I think, once it's been proven he killed four other officers, you may be right (though that starts to look like extra-judicial execution). Until then, he's a fleeing suspect who's just been shot dead (with multiple rounds - presumably deadly force was intended) who's been killed for fleeing. The rule of law it isn't and it really doesn't seem to have much place in a civilised society.
- winckel
I agree with you, and I'm not one to take death lightly at all. But given what's happened here, I think it's pretty clear that this man has been a violent offender all of his life, and there is no doubt whatsoever that this man was responsible for the deaths of these officers. He wasn't just a fleeing suspect, he was THE guy. I'm not a violent person, I don't relish the death of anyone; what occurred here was horrible for all involved.
- Derrick
I agree with winckel; sounds like extra-judicial execution to me. But then lynchings are a fundamental part of American culture.
- James Myatt
I live in Seattle so this is on the local news right now. They just said that Maurice Clemmons had one of the murdered officer's guns and aimed it at the officer who shot him.
- Rochelle
@Rochelle. If that's true, I've no issue with officers defending themselves from death and injury. Would be interesting to know if that's corroborated by other witnesses.
- winckel
Did they use the word "allegedly" when they described that scenario?
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
And what's corroborated by the crime lab as well.
- Derrick
There were no other witnesses. The officer came across an empty, running car this morning, got out of his cruiser to investigate it, and found Clemmons next to the car.
- Rochelle
I guess we won't ever know the whole story, but if the officer basicaly shot a fleeing suspect in the back, regardless of the crimes he allegedly commited, that's pretty messed up. Seems like there is a lot more to this story than that, though.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
whatever happened here, Huckabee is damaged by association with the original release
- winckel
Regardless of whether he's THE guy, you can't execute someone without due process. This should not be tolerated in a civilised society. And that's assuming that capital punishment has a place in a modern civilised society at all.
- James Myatt
I'll wait for the Michael Bay -movie based on this story that will explain everything...
- Jemm
neither Latimes nor CNN refer to a gun being pulled and pointed at the police officer - which seems odd for reputable journalism, if it did happen, it's a pretty salient fact given the guy was shot dead
- winckel
Jemm, there's nothing here for Michael Bay to use for a movie. There are people involved, no spaceships, robots, airplanes, or things that might blow up for no reason at all.
- Derrick
@Derric: I'm pretty sure he can remove all the substance and drama from the actual story and add some of the items you mentioned. More likely all of them.
- Jemm
I'm not responsible for CNN or LA Times so I have no idea about that, but I tend to trust a local reporter on the scene, talking to local cops than a national news mega conglomerate.

My big hard drive (where all my important documents are -- photos, music, tax returns) is showing signs of failure. No bad blocks that I can tell (yet), but the occasional characteristic "ATA command failed, controller reset" sound. Given how cheap disks are these days, I'm going to build a RAID setup next.
2. custom-built, small, cheap-ish OpenSolaris / FreeBSD box with ZFS, and two (mirrored) hard drives (or four, for twice the space and striping). This requires more work, but it gives free snapshots.
- Tudor Bosman
3. ReadyNAS NVX (sadly, they factored "snapshots" into the enterprise NVX version, not the home-office NVX Pioneer version). Expensive, but probably the least hassle to set up.
- Tudor Bosman
Andrew: a click as the heads reset, then a half-second whirr (during which your computer is likely frozen) as they realign.
- Tudor Bosman
I have one of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp.... Price was right for me since I didn't have a desktop to cannibalize and everything I wanted worked out of the box (Time Machine and media server)
- Benjamin Golub
Ben I've been looking at that WD. My concern always is ... 2TB is too small :)
- Deepak Singh
Go with the OpenSolaris/ZFS box. (Or FreeBSD 8?) You can then install custom software (Crashplan?) to do offsite backup also. You can build a 4x1.5T setup for $600-900 depending on the CPU/RAM.
- Joe Beda ()
Deepak: they do have a 4TB version (2x 2TB disks), which is of course 2TB if mirrored.
- Tudor Bosman
Joe: I'm kind of leaning that way myself. I don't need a lot of CPU, as there will be only 1-3 hosts accessing it concurrently.
- Tudor Bosman
So now I'm looking for recommendations for a small, well-ventilated micro-ATX case with at least 4 drive bays. Hot-swappable would be nice :)
- Tudor Bosman
After my raid issues of the last week, I've decided on the following plan: One master 1.5T disk and one 1.5T 'delayed mirror' disk that gets synced up every 24 hours. Once every few months I pull the delayed mirror off, call it a snapshot, and store it off-site, and replace it with a new 1.5T drive. This system protects against single-drive faulure, catastrophic site loss (theft/fire),...

I wish there were some sort of open source Drobo project. At a minimum, it could just be a list of suggested cases, motherboards, etc for a ZFS appliance.
- Ken Sheppardson
Question: What are you trying to protect from? RAIDs are great for high throughput (striping) and high uptime (mirrors). If you're not overly concerned about either then I'd suggest a more traditional incremental backup solution.
- Kevin Fox
Ken: There's FreeNAS, I'm sure that people on their community have some advice. I just haven't looked at it yet.
- Tudor Bosman
Kevin: I'll need some form of offline backup as well. Recovering 1TB+ of data from offline backup is bound to be painful, though, so I'd rather save that for catastrophic events (ie. things an order of magnitude less likely than a disk failure)
- Tudor Bosman
'k. I'll only add that I had a 4-disk RAID array that went south because of directory problems. The fact that the data was redundant didn't help recovery one bit (and actually made it harder). As of this morning it looks like I got the data back, but I've learned not to trust RAID as a comprehensive parachute. Data corruption can happen lots of ways, and not all of them are protected by RAID.
- Kevin Fox
Ordered a box with five 2TB WD drives (Newegg had them on sale, 5 per customer limit). As I don't really need more random read bandwidth than a single disk, it will be RAID-Z, and likely using FreeBSD 8. I'll post updates as I build this thing.

"Kemp Minifie believes the diagonal cut creates the illusion that your sandwich is bigger. Minifie was the executive food editor for the recently deceased Gourmet Magazine, and she offers a tip to prove the triangle's superiority. Prop one half of the sandwich up against the other half to give the plate an elegant vertical dimension. The triangle isn't just more pleasing to look at, Minifie adds — it's better eating. First, there's the narrower corner, which can be delicately placed in the mouth — or shoveled in, when lunchtime is limited. And if you are not a crust lover, rejoice: The long, crustless hypotenuse gives you a very ample entrance into the softer, meatier part of the sandwich. But triangles aren't just for haute foodies. You won't catch short-order cook Nathan "Spanky" Lewis cutting a sandwich into rectangles. He's been making sandwiches at the Tastee Diner in Bethesda, Md., for 16 years and has one word for why triangles rule: "Reputation." Especially on a BLT or a club...

I've been watching a few UK property shows, and I was wondering if someone from the UK could enlighten me as to why a lot of houses over there have washing machines in the kitchen?
That's the reason a couple of my friends have theirs in the kitchen, they don't have anywhere else to put them. On a semi-related note, I've always wondered, from watching You Are What You Eat, why the refrigerators are so small in UK homes.
- Penguin It's Cold Outside
Know what's weird? I assumed it was like that in Australia too.
- Admiral Anika
A large fridge takes up valuable wine rack space so it's a big no-no.
- Mark H
And it seems to me the reason fridges in Europe aren't the ridiculous behemoths we have here in the States is that people go shopping daily for their food. Here, (most) people stock up on canned goods and frozen food. Whereas, they have little markets that are within walking distance of home. It's like what we (my family) do. We don't really have food in the house. We shop for the daily meal. We get fresh produce, meats & dairy. Our fridge is really only used to house leftovers, if any.
- Admiral Anika
Yeah... know that now, Bryce. But for the longest time, I had thought your kitchens had washing machine/sinks too.
- Admiral Anika
Easier to keep the water pipes all in the same room? With exception of the bathroom which requires privacy.
- CW™
I'm trying to think, most people here would probably have fridges on the larger side. I know ours is a bit larger than usual. Our family generally does a big shop once a week and we get meat whenever it's on special and freeze it. Mum's a big fan of stocking up on canned/packaged stuff, I think we have about 12 jars of pasta sauce in the pantry!
- Bryce Roney
from email
We do a big shop once a fortnight, including meat and bread (which we freeze), and get more milk, fruit & veg in-between if we run out.
- Mellissa
Oh, and more on the laundry front - do people in the UK mostly use dryers, or do they hang their clothes out on the line? Do you guys use a clothesline Bryce? Most families I know in Australia use the dryer for emergencies or really wet weather only.
- Mellissa
My friends/family in Europe have dryers if they live in apt. but my friends in houses use a line.
- Admiral Anika
We have a clothesline and a dryer. Tasmania has a habit of raining a lot so we do use the dryer sometimes in winter. We're using our dryer all the time at the moment because there's a building site next door to where our clothesline is and we don't want to get dust blown all over the clothes.

My old Baltimore row house has the washer in the kitchen (although there's a laundry tub in the basement). The previous owners put it there to make it easy to get the wash out to the backyard clothesline.

m9m, that's like my current place. There's a wash basin in the basement and there was a clothesline down there. But the mudroom upstairs is where my washer and dryer are. you can see where there used to be a sink, I have hooks for a clothesline in there and a built-in ironing board with a little cubby on the basement steps for the iron.

It's all about space. I guess in the US, if you were tight on space, then you'd go to a laundrette/laudromat or whatever you guys call it.

Thank you! Radio 1 is great, but I don't know much about their morning program. So now I'll start listening last week's show!

And you have Jo Whiley later on on both days. Great line up at the weekend now. Shame their weekday line-up has turns a little pants. Though thankfully we have Zane Lowe most nights. :-)

Thank you both:) It seems the iPlayer will be part of my favourites. Now listening to Sara Cox, it's 12:30 here!

Moyles can be too much, very little music, a lot of idle chat but can be very funny. Better than the new early morning DJ, Dev. He's really annoying. I preferred Greg James but he's moved to the lunchtime gig, well deserved I'd say.

I had a pretty good gall bladder until it was removed. Heh. Actually, it sounds weird, but I like my hands and fingernails. And my natural haircolor.

64 Proof! Wow! That puts this beer in the spirits category, which starts at 20% alcohol content!
- Kurt Starnes
I've seen their other beers in the shops, not tried them yet. I love the name, "Tactical Nuclear Penguin" = :D

I believe that spirits in the UK start at 40%, or maybe that's just whisky.

I've had one of their beers from Tesco before and it was extremely tasty; IIRC, it was Punk IPA. They really do have fantastic marketing. I have a lot of respect for them.

This is going to be to be what Mad Dog 20/20 was to wine. The Danes used to frown on we Americans who enjoyed an occasional Carlsberg Elephant beer, because over there that puts you in the same class as the public drunks and public urinators (which, of course, go hand in hand.) This a lot more potent that Elephant!
