12 new items from Google Reader just got pulled into my FriendFeed account at http://friendfeed.com/scoblei.... Fresh meat! Google Reader is seeing a LOT of new users lately.
It's all part of their plan for total world domination :) - Jim Connolly
Jim, LOL. - Jigar Mehta
i'm going to go out on a limb and bring up this old chest nut...the users have always been there, growing steadily by the day :) - Zee.
The Like feature in Reader, though a small gesture, opens a big window to more of a social RSS experience. Tiny software changes can have huge cultural effects. - phil baumann
Yep... and it appears to be working! - Susan Beebe from iPhone
Zee: not really true. I've been on Google Reader for years and was #1 user for quite a while. In the past week a TON of new people have joined. - Robert Scoble
Why? - Susan Beebe from iPhone
Susan: because of the new sharing and liking and searching features. New features get PR. PR gets people to try something new. - Robert Scoble
Good point! The username feature got me back in gReader this week - Susan Beebe from iPhone
Wonder how much of it is just 'us' - Geeks feeding the same information around different sites / apps? - Jim Connolly
Jim: I don't recognize most of the names of people who've followed me in the past week. So, it might be geeks, but based on the content they are picking I'd say it's going a bit more mainstream than that. Certainly they aren't the same usual folks who I usually see. For instance, on Dopplr about half of the people who follow me there are people I've actually met face to face. In Google Reader, this week's new bunch is closer to 1%. - Robert Scoble
Robert: That would be VERY interesting! - Jim Connolly
Many geeks, but I think there's plenty of other kinds of peeps. Some in mine don't appear to be geeks. - phil baumann
Q: If I Like your Like, do you see that Like back in your feed? << - phil baumann
Phil: What do geeks look like? :-) (Visions in my mind of thye cast from Big Bang Theory) - Jim Connolly
All geeks are hot :) - phil baumann
Not too sure about that! - Susan Beebe from iPhone
Since we're on the topic, do we wanna share each other feeds here? http://www.google.com/reader... - phil baumann
Just started using it - love it! - BEX
I wonder if Google's giving us a glimpse of where Wave is going. Adding messaging into reader could kick it even farther into the social space. But then that would be sorta FFish I guess. - phil baumann
The "like" move was really smart. Based on one week of stats, a lot more people are likely to like a feature (compare to shared and shared with notes). Regarding search + follow, it is a great step forward compared to the 2 way handshake which was in place. Future will tell if people want to create yet another graph or use friendfeed + twitter. If I had to guess, I would say that friendfeed is the best solution. - Edwin Khodabakchian
phil: except FriendFeed is 1000x faster than Google Reader. The engineering team there really doesn't understand how to do fast stuff like the FriendFeed team does. - Robert Scoble
robert - the FF team is amazing. period. - phil baumann
Wow, Leo Laporte is fuming about the human rights problems he saw in China. More over at live.twit.tv - Mark
"China is a totalitarian state and like all totalitarian states they need to control the flow of information" - Leo Laporte - Mark
Mark: and this is new? I saw the same thing 10 years ago when I visited China. - Robert Scoble
Rebecca McKinnon is doing the best job of covering China. She's at http://friendfeed.com/rebecca... (worked as a journalist there for many years and cofounded Global Voices Online). - Robert Scoble
Robert: The ff team is indeed amazing. But the Google Reader team is also very good: GR has a clean internal structure, awesome APIs and keeps shipping which for a 2-3 year old product is a tribute to the quality of the engineering. The reason why I think friendfeed will win is not engineering or realtime. It is because as a user I do not want to have a sharing tool per application.... more... - Edwin Khodabakchian
yeah I guess - Mark
China blocked Friendfeed he says too :( - Mark
Edwin: the Google Reader team might be good if you are an average user. But on my account it is ssssllllooooowwwww. FriendFeed, however, with 10x as many people interacting with me is super fast. But I agree with your overall thesis. - Robert Scoble
He says the people of china dont seem to care that they live in a totalitarian state with limited freedom and censorship etc - Mark
The slow factor is due to the fact that it tracks "mark as read" which changes the nature of the back end beast. Which as you point out can add a 1-2s per query if you have 500+ feeds. - Edwin Khodabakchian
Edwin: most of the slowness I'm seeing is in adding new friends to Google Reader. Horridly slow. - Robert Scoble
Good point. This is because even if it allows asymmetric follow, the Google Reader platform was not designed for more than 500-1000 following (sources and friends included). This is one more reason why friendfeed is a better sharing and conversation platform - Edwin Khodabakchian
I am back using Chrome and Reader after a stint with Firefox and Feedly. Part of the reason for coming back was the new sharing capabilities. I am having some problems getting my follows to actually stick, but I think that the follow feature will allow me to subscribe to less feeds and more people and make better use of my time. - Sean Brady
Leo Laporte: "my colleagues in the tech world are more concerned with protecting their sources and NDA's then getting the truth out" - Mark
Edwin: this is a common problem at Google. My Google Latitude account crashes with 350 friends because they didn't plan on anyone having more than 100 friends. Lame. Until they fix this attitude they won't be seen as best of breed in social networking. - Robert Scoble
Sean: the 2.0a.012 feedly patch we pushed out last night includes support for like, new profile and the new sharing capabilities. - Edwin Khodabakchian
Mark: I wish Leo would start up a chat for this stuff here on FriendFeed. I hate IRC. - Robert Scoble
I am not hearing him on the mic are you? And I agree. - Robert Burgin
re: scoble, edwin ; i'm sure google [earth] has their own beacon logfiles for this, therefore it's not really 'lame' from *their* side , j/k ; in other words, they didn't care about the front end customers, just about themselves and *their* customers, which should be real estate, bioFarma and privatized defense contractors ; http://friendfeed.com/search... - ewing2001akaNicomedy2010
Robert: agreed. I do not think that Google can come back to in the social networking game unless they do a major acquisition. But they have a great play in the identity, profile, single sign-on field. - Edwin Khodabakchian
Edwin: and their business listings are great, overall. They could use those to get back into the game. - Robert Scoble
right now i think twitter might buy twitpic pretty soon. Google will buy both twitter and friendfeed by next year , since both are run by former employees anyway ; - ewing2001akaNicomedy2010
I think that the facebook vs. twitter vs. myspace vs. friendfeed battle is going to be interesting to watch. Friendfeed is definitely behind but they have such a better technology. They just need to find a couple beach heads and a few more Scoble's for something interesting to happen. - Edwin Khodabakchian
I thought MySpace was dead toast fish. - Bill Sodeman
Edwin: FriendFeed needs to do a few things to get to the next level: 1. Give us the ability to brand ourselves. Themes are cool, but we need them on rooms and on our own accounts. 2. We need better tools on search to get rid of duplicates. I'm getting a lot of duplicates from rooms, for instance, and there's no way to get rid of them even though they are quite consistent. 3. We need... more... - Robert Scoble
Robert: I know. What friendfeed really needs is to bootstrap an twitter like eco-system of apps: a lot of the issues you are highlighting are real and could be easily addressed by different clients offering different experiences. We have been seriously thinking about being one of those client applications. I am wondering what is the ingredient to make the ecosystem a reality. Any thoughts on that? - Edwin Khodabakchian
the satellite electronic defense league around EADS, Thames UK, SES Dutch Skies and others don't allow Microsoft/Facebook any longer to climb higher in the power league, coz he did his stuff in the 90s with Iridium. It's more than embarrassing , that DEMS still don't know that he was in league with the Bin Ladin Group and so was the current U.S. Intelligence Head in charge , Dennis Blair [DNI ; also in charge of CIA and FBI since 2004] http://www.muckety.com/Dennis-... - ewing2001akaNicomedy2010
Thanks for the good conversation. Back to work now! - Edwin Khodabakchian
Edwin: FriendFeed also needs a mobile strategy beyond hoping the world gets iPhones. Start bootstrapping developers there. I wish Friendfeed had a search service that let me search all of Facebook and all of Twitter. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
I gather Friendfeed works good on the iphone? I really need help Robert, I mean, seriously, I cannot decide which smart phone to get. I don't want to buy an apple just to be cool if its not the best. Wikipedia has a huge list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... - Mark
But developers seem to move toward platforms that have a few things: 1. Users. 2. A decent chance of monetizing. 3. That do something unique. 4. That are open and/or resharable 5. Simple and consistent. If FriendFeed can do those things with an API it would be most impressive. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Mark: I love my iPhone but you have to come to your own decision there. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
waz this new Verizon wifi IPhone-Compaq Notebook about? big PR campaign on weekend ; - ewing2001akaNicomedy2010
I learned from this thread that some Google products actually have scalability problems. Amazing. Their experience with scaling stuff doesn't perpetuate through the whole company it seems. I mean, I think the right attitude for Google would be to design for a million feeds and a million friends. - Meryn Stol
Mark: that list is comprehensive, but some of the phones on there are old - Kashif Khan
google *has* billion of feeds. After all, G Earth/Lockheed/InQTel/FCS executed main parts of 9/11, even if conspiracy smashers deny all this.... - ewing2001akaNicomedy2010
...and of course Google is also in bed with Transnational Fascists around Obama: http://friendfeed.com/search... ; http://ff.im/3RyHf - ewing2001akaNicomedy2010
ewing2001: are you an automated spam bot? - Edwin Khodabakchian
nope i'm around since 1993 and can type and research fast ; - ewing2001akaNicomedy2010
i'm also a comedian coz politics suk ; http://www.youtube.com/watch... - ewing2001akaNicomedy2010
robert: good list. I think that it would also help them if they made "developers" a priority and were being vocal about it (one thing twitter did/does well). Enjoy the rest of the week end!! - Edwin Khodabakchian
Ewing: you are very close to getting blocked for taking my threads off topic. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
i was made invisible by ff during the davos economy forum, therefore i'm sure Edwin is one of the ignorants, which define, what "spam" is as well.goodbye and over and best to Scoble ; - ewing2001akaNicomedy2010
what an odd person - Mark
To Robert's points re:branding & filtering issues on FriendFeed, I would add the need for a "Subscribe feed to FF" bookmarklet as described here: http://friendfeed.com/alexsch... - Alex Schleber
I wish they would rename the "like" features on FF and elsewhere, can't think of an appropriate word. - Mark
Robert, just so you know, I was following your shared Items as a standard feed for months. When Reader made their changes, I showed up on your lists. My behavior didn't change, though. - Alex Scrivener
I just dumped Newsgator after many years of use because it just kept using up too much memory on my Blackberry. I tried out Google Reader, and found it was slightly better. I won't go back. - Amac
Actually, I suspect that almost all of the people you think have joined have actually been using it for a while - the social stuff just makes them more visible. - Ian Betteridge

Dave Slusher
I'm tired of being polite about this. If you think having to pay taxes is "spreading the wealth" and "socialist", then you - sir or madam - are a pussy. I pay a fair bit of taxes every year and I'd be completely embarrassed to be caught whining about it the way all these rich fuckers are.
It's not the rich people who are complaining though. At least not on friendfeed. - Alex Scoble
i certainly don't share the same level of enthusiasm for paying taxes and dont forsee ever parting with my hard-earned money without getting a very clear and damned good reason why it is needed in the first place BUT i am getting a little tired with every freaking intersection between the government and the economy being labeled socialism - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
I don't complain about paying taxes. I complain about the inefficient way they are collected and distributed. It's a bit like giving $1 to charity and finding that only 30 cents gets to the intended target. That's my beef with big government, not the paying of tax itself. - Ian May
Oh, I agree with Marco though... It's like Socialism is the 'evil word of the week' It's quoted by many, although few understand what Socialism actually is. - Ian May
well put ian - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
When those who whine about paying taxes, rich or poor, can continue the conversation with what programs and services they'd like to cut, I'll listen. It is our collective shame that we've allowed the argument to be framed this way. - Warner Crocker
There's nothing inefficient about the way they are collected. The IRS is very good at collecting money. - Alex Scoble
Alex, The IRS might be good at collecting money, but I meant the amount that gets spent on that collection, and the amount that gets wasted deciding how to re-distribute that money afterwards. - Ian May
My guess is that no talking head I've seen on TV decrying "socialism" makes less than $1M per year. Marco, saying I'm enthusiastic is trying hard to misread me. It's not a joy to pay them but I do understand that's the price of an orderly society. - Dave Slusher
And how come the main pushback on this is from Colbert, Stewart, Letterman, et al? No one who supported the $750B gift to wall street has any leg to stand on opposing Obama on fake socialism when they support the public purchase of this private equity at $2 on the $1. Straight from the Bush/Cheney/Paulson axis of douchebag. - Dave Slusher
lol fair enough - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
Warner, I don't feel the slightest bit of shame. I've been pushing back on this every day for the last 3 months. How about all the news organizations (sic) that blindly repeat this credulously as if it wasn't obviously false by inspection? - Dave Slusher
Paying taxes isn't an issue, but increasing taxes on a few people, or increasing taxes on corporations because "no people will be affected" - that's an issue. - Ontario Emperor from fftogo
How about rolling back the 2001 "XMas for the wealthy" tax cuts? - Dave Slusher
Ian, you can't throw that shit out without numbers. Pop quiz, what is the budget of the IRS and what are the total receipts of the treasury? You seem to think that collection efficiency is low, which is a common meme. Do you know the actual numbers? After a few minutes research, I now do. - Dave Slusher
[hide] - Mistletoe Glen
If you don't like this or anything, just hide it or block me or whatever but keep it to yourself. Leaving the comment is just douchebaggy and unnecessary, dude. - Dave Slusher
Dave, I agree. The mythmakers unfortunately do too good a job. - Warner Crocker
@dave to clarify "fair enough" was in ref to your statement on enthusiasm - asking for #'s and a deepr analysis from ian is great and would certainly lead to a more substantive debate but i have to admit the reliance on emotionally loaded descriptive terms like douchebaggery and xmas for the wealthy makes it difficult - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
If people who have the time and wherewithal to blather on FriendFeed don't think they're rich, then they haven't seen much of the world. - Chuck LeDuc Díaz
Marco, you are asking for more linguistic fairness in my pushback on equating raising taxes on incomes > $250K by 3% with SOCIALISM? The other side of this is not constrained by fairness or sanity. I started by calling these people "pussies." It's a standard ploy that the GOP arguments begin unfair and then they call for fairness, and the Dems go along with it. Fuck that, what comes around goes around. - Dave Slusher
Chuck, I'm richer than most Americans and way richer than most of the rest of the world. That makes my argument stronger, not weaker. Nice try at a gotcha. Not a match, the board goes back. - Dave Slusher
No numbers came in overnight, so I'll do it. The budget I found for fiscal year 2007 was $11B for the IRS, receipts of $2.4T. That puts the cost of collecting the money at approximately 0.45% . This isn't the definitive number but gives us an order of magnitude. Is the point that 0.45% is the number of crazy inefficiency? - Dave Slusher
As a comparison, I took the revenues of my company and the number of people that work in collecting the money, guessed about their salaries and compared. It worked out to about 0.5% . - Dave Slusher
@dave problem is you aren't talking to "the GOP" you are talking to individual human beings who - I work for GOP candidates - I ran McCain's field operation in Iowa until August of last year - I did not have to commit to "a standard ploy" that from that point forward I would begin my arguments unfairly "and then call for fairness" - the "what goes around comes around" cop out is EXACTLY what has lead to the deterioration of debate - because when someone like me tries very hard to.... - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
...rationally discuss a topic someone like you decides that it makes sense to try and hold me or anyone else with values different from yours accountable for things other people have done. get over it man - we are all our own people with our own views and our own ways of doing things - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
Marco - I am talking mostly about the pundit class that we see on TV here, but your point is fair. I remain steadfast that the basic frame is ridiculous, and arguing on its merits just gives the nonsense credence which is why I don't feel unfair in my counter-frame, re "only pussies fuss about 3% of their large salaries." This is the same class that got a tax cut during A WAR! - Dave Slusher
i appreciate that - i think those are completely valid points of view - i even think it is completely valid to express problems we have with the policies or approaches of corporate bodies like "the gop" - but we must take care to remember that while a generalized approach can accurately be conferred on a corporate group like a political party we cant automatically assume that everyone who identifies with that party will instantly support or exhibit the same approach - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
Ditto Ian May's comments. - Mathew A. Koeneker
Paying taxes isn't socialist or "spreading the wealth". Taking money from one group of people (productive members of society), and giving it to people who don't is. This is exactly what 0bama wants to do. - Spencer
Spencer, your definition of "socialism" fits the Wall Street bailout perfectly. That's exactly what McCain/Bush/Cheny/Paulson want to do, take money from the people who work and give it to the rich with no strings. - Dave Slusher
Spencer I take offense to that. My net taxable income is less than $250K and I'm pretty certain I'm an order of magnitude more productive member of society than a lot of wealthy people. I really don't understand why everyone assumes all of the increased tax revenue is just going to be handed over to deadbeats. Please post a link from a neutral source that clearly describes this. You can't listen to either party's statements standalone. - Paul Reynolds
The bailout was a mistake, but lets remember 0bama supports it as well. Just yesterday, he said it's a "step in the right direction". It really doesn't matter who the money goes to, taking money from one taxpayer and giving it to another is nonsense. We have an economy in trouble, and we have a nominee who wants to raise taxes on employers, producers, etc. and give it to someone else. That is just crazy. - Spencer
this where things get muddy though - i absolutely would have preferred that we would have never had to consider the bailout but i do think it was better than the potential outcome of the alternative - regardless of who was at fault etc we have to make decisions of what will provide the best outcome in an imperfect environment - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
Nationalizing businesses == socialism. Paying taxes on wages from capitalist system == capitalism. It's really quite simple, y'all. I'm out for the weekend, let the debate rage without me! - Dave Slusher
++++ dave well said - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
Well said. Not sure there's much to add beyond this: Privatizing government so that the revenues can then be turned toward political agendas like Prop 8 really completes the greed/power circle. - Karoli
the initiative process has tremendous potential in theory - unfortunately elected officials in states that has strong initiative processes have used them as an excuse to abdicate their responsibility to make tough decisions by saying "hey - lets let the people decide!" - Marco(aureliusmaximus)

SEOT 11,364 - competition is a bit high for #30dc though LOL - couldn't figure out how to add another image - the matrix is on my friendfeed page - anyone with more experience want to swap for this :) - Ginger G from Bookmarklet
wow is right! too bad the SEOC isn't 90,000 lower ;-) - Barb Sabathil
I think someone with more experience would be okay with this considering the amount of traffic - Ginger G
I'd willing to bet it's not a "buying" term, but still good traffic potential. The SEOC is high but do-able with work and the competition is heavy but spots #3 & #4 look like targets. Def not for the 30DC, but something to hang on to for later or to attack with a group at some point. Several people working together could hit this hard and funnel the traffic to their various related niche sites from there. - Scott Bannon

@rambn: off-shore drilling isn't the long-term solution to our energy problems, agreed, nor our short term ones either.
Amen! I'm glad someone has a clue. - RaAusar Powers
Increasing domestic oil production is a critical move for reasons of leverage and as a show of will. It says, clearly, that we will not be held hostage and that we are not without options. Obviously we should move to nuke power and should have done so decades ago. Solar is expensive and fragile, wind is fine but ugly, geothermal is spotty, wave power is fine but hugely expensive. Microwave from orbit is great but dangerous as hell. Nuke wins. - Soulhuntre
Increasing domestic oil production might help us in 10-15 years and hopefully by then we won't need nearly so much. Are we going to build new refineries too? That'll take 10+ years too. - Chrimmus Tad
I think we should build new refineries as well as increase drilling ... regardless of what we run cars on. Petrochemicals are often strategic and critical materials. In many ways burning the stuff is the LEAST useful thing you could do with it. You couldn't even build a modern electric car without using a lot of oil derived materials. Oil will not become unimportant for a long, long time. - Soulhuntre
Almost $50 billion in the last quarter alone in profits to the four major oil companies in the US. Do we really want to keep making shareholders wealthier at the expense of everyone? I think we should increase domestic research into alternative energy, and I hate to say it, but continue to pay $4 a gallon and write it off to the cost of a better future. - jcunwired
Off-shore drilling only benefits a select few and won't amount to a hill of beans for most of us. This is just stale thinking. Reject it and lets work to find/refine something new and different. No, I don't know what it is. Yes, I believe we can figure it out, if we really want to. - AJ Kohn
beyond sources, we need distribution: someone should buy all the vacant lots that were stations to sell elec, CNG, e85, etc. - Robert Kuhlmann
It sure isn't. It wouldn't even start bringing oil until something like 2030. It's an absurdist attempt to squeeze a few more $$ out of our natural resources. Why not invest in a Manhattan Project-style renewable energy program?? - Clay Newton
The profit made at the pump is federally regulated - in other words the whole idea of "windfall profits" as if they are gouging us is not only incorrect but impossible. The federal government makes about double in taxes at the pump as the oil company does in profit. Who is robbing us again? Stirring up class envy against "big oil" isn't anything but politics. - Soulhuntre
I think the losses we would incur from offshore drilling would outstrip any short-term gains. It's time to take rapid action on other solutions that don't damage the environment in the long run. - Cathryn Hrudicka
http://echoloquation.com/post... --- responses to the recent survey. there are no easy answers. - Steve Ivy
@Soulhuntre: Disagree. Even if I take your argument at face value, that does not excuse the profits from 'big oil' from the picture. The idea that you ignore the lesser of the two evils is specious. By this logic we would only seek to incarcerate mass murders and ignore the run of the mill one-off murderer. (Yes, it's a grisly odd analogy, but I'm sticking with it.) - AJ Kohn
A University of Chicago study in 2004 concluded that the first new nuclear plants would be more expensive than gas or coal plants, generating electricity at a cost as high as 7.1 cents per kilowatt hour (81 percent more than Progress Energy's estimate), depending on what assumptions are plugged in. Using assumptions similar to Progress Energy's, the most optimistic estimate would be 5.1... more... - Chris Baskind
You're right, Aaron. Lots of Kool Aid to go around, starting with the delicious cherry stuff being served by utilities who want to build new nuclear plants. - Chris Baskind
Scoble, weren't you calling for us to "drill now" a couple weeks ago? - Anthony Citrano
How can anyone think that offshore drilling and drilling in the ANWR would not produce a lessening of our dependence on foreign oil? And please don't use that tired argument that we would not see any benefits for 10 years. Just starting drilling would have an immediate beneficial economic effect. - Michael Tefft
Just because off shore drilling happens near the United States doesn't mean the US or its people benefit from it. Oil companies are multinationals -- they sell their product to the highest bidder. Right now and for the forseeable future even if increase in demand levels off regardless of what new oil is discovered or made available the demand will far outstrip the supply. It is after all non renewable resource. - Brian Sullivan
@Michael: What is the argument for it having an immediate beneficial economic effect? You believe foreign oil will drop in price on the news that new oil might be introduced into the equation in 10 years? - AJ Kohn
There is more oil of the coast of California than the total oil production of Texas. Not exactly a hill of beans. - Michael Tefft
As for oil deposits in the ANWR, a United States Geologic Survey study found that there may be as much as 90 billion barrels of oil and 1,670 trillion cubic feet of natural gas that can be produced by drilling there. - Michael Tefft
While US oil companies must sell US oil to US consumers, does so at international prices. When oil produced by off-shore drilling became available (many years from now), foreign producers would probably reduce their production to maintain their current profits. The result would be the same or higher gas prices, but much higher profits for US oil companies (higher prices for crude that is cheaper to produce because its local). - Steve Wilhelm
There is more oil spilled into the oceans by personal watercraft than by offshore oil drilling. Only 1000 barrels of oil spilled by offshore drilling from 2000-2004. Sixty three percent of all oil spilled into the worlds oceans come from natural seepage of the earth - Michael Tefft
First demonstrate how new drilling would have a real "immediate effect" beyond propaganda. - Chris Baskind
Chris, you explain how it possibly could not, beyond propaganda. - Michael Tefft
@Michael: I can do that, though Chris likely can do it better. The market for oil will not change based on the future possibility of additional oil coming into play. Shares of Google did not change when a new start-up claims to be a Google Killer, nor when Microsoft rededicates itself to search. - AJ Kohn
AJ, same answer for you. Please explain how drilling for offshore oil would not have an immediate beneficial economic effect. The oil is really there and we can really get it. How can that not help? I must be missing something here. - Michael Tefft
No, you've loaded a supposition in your question. It's voodoo, magic, and wishful thinking. - Chris Baskind
Someone here give me one good reason why we should not drill for oil offshore? The environmental impact is less than that posed by private water craft. - Michael Tefft
@Michael: Commodities markets will not change on these far flung expectations. There is no immediate impact. I could argue the opposite in fact, should you believe that foreign oil views this new oil as a threat, why not lock in higher profits NOW before they add it to the market? Not to mention other nations are increasing oil dependency (India, China) so the market will be different by the time it is added. - AJ Kohn
Michael - that doesn't make any sense. You stated it would have an "immediate effect," not Chris. Tell us what that effect is please. How will drilling by private companies lower the prices I pay at the pumps immediately? Especially when we're not talking about building more refineries. - Chrimmus Tad
@Michael: Sure. It will not have a material impact on oil prices, benefits a select few and diverts our attention away from real solutions. Now ... your turn to answer. - AJ Kohn
AJ, that doesn't hold water. Speculators influence the market for oil every day, dramatically. And it is not future possibility. We could be producing significant oil in months, that is not a future possibility, that is a fact. - Michael Tefft
BTW, I agree that offshore oil drilling presents a possibly acceptable environmental risk -- the industry's safety record is pretty good. Further, we should investigate the United States Geologic Survey's wild-ass, seat-of-the-pants guesses. I just don't want wishful thinking about new drilling to distract from what we really need: a replacement for oil. - Chris Baskind
1. there are no rigs available to even do the drilling for the next several years. 2. these oil companies HAVE drilling rights for millions of acres that they've yet to exploit. they don't need more. 3. the amount of oil produced would cover an exrtremely limited amount of demand for a short period of time. 4. production would not be available for 10 or 15 YEARS! 5. it further distracts us from making the proper, long term and sustainable investment in other sources of energy - @baratunde from twhirl
Chris, what is voodoo, magic and wishful thinking? A United States Geologic Survey study found that there may be as much as 90 billion barrels of oil and 1,670 trillion cubic feet of natural gas that can be produced by drilling in the ANWR. Same think holds true for known deposits off the coast of California. Where is the wishful thinking in that. - Michael Tefft
here's another reason why offshore drilling is a failed policy. forget for a moment that this link is pointing to the Huffington Post. i suggest to follow the links within the links and use your own critical thinking. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mitchel... - ~C4Chaos
@Michael: Your speculator argument only makes sense if you believe the second part of your statement. Please provide some evidence that "significant oil in months" is a reality. I'll concede the immediate effect point if you can validate that off-shore drilling will deliver new oil to the market in months. - AJ Kohn
AJ, on what facts do you base your speculation that it will not have an impact on oil prices? Again I ask you how it could not. Where are the concrete reasons why it won't. I am still waiting. Only C4Chaos has actually shown me any possible reasons. - Michael Tefft
Chris, you can drill for oil offshore and still pursue the long term solutions. They are not mutually exclusive. - Michael Tefft
Baratunde. Show me facts that it would take 10 to 15 years. That is ridiculous. We sent men to the moon in less time than that. That is a tired, unproven argument. - Michael Tefft
@Michael: This will be my last post unless you actually want to have a constructive debate. You have not shown proof that drilling will bring new oil to the market in under 10 years. As such, speculation is not part of the equation. Here's another bit to think about: http://www.chron.com/disp... - AJ Kohn
I think it's ok to develop our energy sources responsibly, and integrate them into our environment - just need some architecture regulation :) - Christopher Galtenberg
Chris. I like that. When I present facts like a USGS survey you dismiss it out of hand. Let me see some of your facts so I can dismiss them out of hand. - Michael Tefft
One more comment. Congress has blocked offshore drilling for 27 years. Do you think if we had started drilling 27 years ago we would still be having this conversation and do you think that we would still be importing 70% of our oil? Got to go mow the yard, enjoyed the conversation. - Michael Tefft
so, basically, we're screwed - Jesse Stay
Jesse basically sums it up. With regard to the energy issue, we truly are a freight train headed full speed toward a cliff. - Anthony Citrano
But Jason, we'll do this the American way: we'll stay full speed ahead on the unsustainable path, slumbering along until something cataclysmic happens. Then we'll ask why nobody warned us or protected us, then we'll overreact, and then we'll forget. - Anthony Citrano
btw, Obama is not closing his door to offshore drilling - http://news.yahoo.com/s... - i think he has a healthy attitude towards it. although i'm sure that the McCain campaign would stick it as a flip-flop. ah well. - ~C4Chaos
What about wind power? How does that work short-term, long-term? - Jesse Stay from twhirl

#30DC Pre-Season Action Item Checklsit - Google Docs - http://docs.google.com/Doc...
I put together a little cheat sheet for all the actionable items for pre-season. I made the assumption that everyone who uses this file is familiar with the training and it is not intended to explain any theory - just a list of actionable items. I hope this helps people get caught up if they fell behind. I built this using the transcripts - so give all the credit and praise to whoever made the transcripts, not me - I just gathered it all up in one place. - Jesse Seymour from Bookmarklet

They can "defend" all they want. Bad cop, and it's on video. He'll be fired and the charges dropped. - Chris Baskind
i don't understand how anyone can defend such a deplorable act by this so-called "police officer." he should be demoted to riker's island bathroom attendant - Cee Bee

Eh - I don't want to hate on him too much - he may be a pretty decent guy who got caught up in Cop Rage (TM). He should be punished the same as an ordinary citizen, fired and then try to put his life back together. - Chrimmus Tad
the thing is -- the charges would have stuck and so would have this cop's blatant lies on his report if there was no videotape of this. an egregious abuse of power is commonplace with many of these people - Cee Bee
I would exclaim "unbelievable" but that would not be accurate :( Coming from a family with a law enforcement tradition, this sort of thing really pisses me off. It happens to oft. - Michael W. May
here's the story behind how exactly this tape was made, and how it made it onto the web. very interesting! link: http://tinyurl.com/698hb7 - Brian Ries
This is a great example of why everyone needs a small live video feed direct to the tubez whenever they're out in public... would prevent this kind of crap... and destroy privacy, but whatever... I want to see more people recording video and more video broadcast straight to the net redundantly across too many servers for a court order to delete... that'll screw the bad guys in the gov't over big time - Chrimmus Tad
This is just some random incident that just happened to be caught on video. It says little or nothing to me about cops, frat boys, cyclists or tourists. It certainly isn't something I'm going to use to frame my world view. - Hayes Haugen

Interesting - I never really paid attention to the situation. Never knew they were offered money. I think it's a real shame because most people blame Hasbro - but when it comes down to it, they do need to protect their brand. Scrabulous doesn't even attempt to be different than Scrabble. If the info in this is true, they should have been happy to take any money and went on their way.... - George Smith

Just heard a local political ad - "Conservative change we need." Ummm... FAIL
We had all 3 federal branches under the control of "conservatives" they totally failed at being fiscally conservative. - Chrimmus Tad
or maybe they were too conservative, following old assumptions & didn't adapt to the current market?? - clarke thomas
They all promised "fiscal conservatism" in addition to their moralism. They completely failed on both fronts, whether they were old school or not. Real conservatives would have significantly reduced government and found a way to finance their immoral war without leaving it up to the next generation. - Chrimmus Tad
moralism/ethics were negated totally, but then again - to some that's in the eye of the beholder. regardless of the war, we know very little of what good/bad was done - because all the press focused on was the war. I can't fault the government for peoples' personal greed. the concept of immoral wars is nothing new, we've won the war...now we're just policing; & this was all about oil; b/c we ignored Pol Pot, Burma, et al. for yrs. - clarke thomas
I couldn't help but imagining this in Yoda's voice. :) - Tim Hoeck

When I said they failed in their moralism I mean even though they controlled the government they failed to amend the constitution to outlaw gay marriage or abortion or pre-marital sex, etc etc etc - Chrimmus Tad
My previous comment proves how much damage the current administration and it's roots have done to the concept of and party based on Conservatism. I saw "Conservative" and processed "Neo-Conservative". And I used to be a Republican, of that older sense. - Michael W. May
