Jim: I don't recognize most of the names of people who've followed me in the past week. So, it might be geeks, but based on the content they are picking I'd say it's going a bit more mainstream than that. Certainly they aren't the same usual folks who I usually see. For instance, on Dopplr about half of the people who follow me there are people I've actually met face to face. In Google Reader, this week's new bunch is closer to 1%.

I wonder if Google's giving us a glimpse of where Wave is going. Adding messaging into reader could kick it even farther into the social space. But then that would be sorta FFish I guess.

The "like" move was really smart. Based on one week of stats, a lot more people are likely to like a feature (compare to shared and shared with notes). Regarding search + follow, it is a great step forward compared to the 2 way handshake which was in place. Future will tell if people want to create yet another graph or use friendfeed + twitter. If I had to guess, I would say that friendfeed is the best solution.

But the Google Reader team is also very good: GR has a clean internal structure, awesome APIs and keeps shipping which for a 2-3 year old product is a tribute to the quality of the engineering. The slow factor is due to the fact that it tracks "mark as read" which changes the nature of the back end beast. Which as you point out can add a 1-2s per query if you have 500+ feeds.

Good point. This is because even if it allows asymmetric follow, the Google Reader platform was not designed for more than 500-1000 following (sources and friends included). This is one more reason why friendfeed is a better sharing and conversation platform

I am back using Chrome and Reader after a stint with Firefox and Feedly. Part of the reason for coming back was the new sharing capabilities. I am having some problems getting my follows to actually stick, but I think that the follow feature will allow me to subscribe to less feeds and more people and make better use of my time.

Edwin: this is a common problem at Google. My Google Latitude account crashes with 350 friends because they didn't plan on anyone having more than 100 friends. Lame. Until they fix this attitude they won't be seen as best of breed in social networking.

But developers seem to move toward platforms that have a few things: 1. Users. 2. A decent chance of monetizing. 3. That do something unique. 4. That are open and/or resharable 5. Simple and consistent. If FriendFeed can do those things with an API it would be most impressive.

I learned from this thread that some Google products actually have scalability problems. Amazing. Their experience with scaling stuff doesn't perpetuate through the whole company it seems. I mean, I think the right attitude for Google would be to design for a million feeds and a million friends.

I don't complain about paying taxes. I complain about the inefficient way they are collected and distributed. It's a bit like giving $1 to charity and finding that only 30 cents gets to the intended target. That's my beef with big government, not the paying of tax itself.

No numbers came in overnight, so I'll do it. The budget I found for fiscal year 2007 was $11B for the IRS, receipts of $2.4T. That puts the cost of collecting the money at approximately 0.45% . This isn't the definitive number but gives us an order of magnitude. Is the point that 0.45% is the number of crazy inefficiency?

The bailout was a mistake, but lets remember 0bama supports it as well. Just yesterday, he said it's a "step in the right direction". It really doesn't matter who the money goes to, taking money from one taxpayer and giving it to another is nonsense. I set it up with a funky template, put in keywords & phrases, (btw at the competitive niche level) set everything to autopost, did absolutely nada to it, looked ugly with no alibi WELL warts and all got to PAGE 1 ON GOOGLE ( 415,000 comp) Did I make a $1 yep and then some, Being Ugly does not deture advertisers, got a couple of contacts that want to pay to play in the site, Oh and on top of that, they want to contribute content too! SO sometimes UGly Buggie Blogs Pay OFF ! Now its off to the Blogmetics Surgeon for a Blog lift. RESEARCH, TESTED IT, WORKED, NOW WILL INVEST TIME ON NICHE.

I'd willing to bet it's not a "buying" term, but still good traffic potential. The SEOC is high but do-able with work and the competition is heavy but spots #3 & #4 look like targets. Def not for the 30DC, but something to hang on to for later or to attack with a group at some point. Several people working together could hit this hard and funnel the traffic to their various related niche sites from there.

Increasing domestic oil production is a critical move for reasons of leverage and as a show of will. It says, clearly, that we will not be held hostage and that we are not without options. Obviously we should move to nuke power and should have done so decades ago. Solar is expensive and fragile, wind is fine but ugly, geothermal is spotty, wave power is fine but hugely expensive. Microwave from orbit is great but dangerous as hell. Nuke wins.

I think we should build new refineries as well as increase drilling ... regardless of what we run cars on. Petrochemicals are often strategic and critical materials. In many ways burning the stuff is the LEAST useful thing you could do with it. You couldn't even build a modern electric car without using a lot of oil derived materials. Oil will not become unimportant for a long, long time.

Almost $50 billion in the last quarter alone in profits to the four major oil companies in the US. Do we really want to keep making shareholders wealthier at the expense of everyone? The profit made at the pump is federally regulated - in other words the whole idea of "windfall profits" as if they are gouging us is not only incorrect but impossible. The federal government makes about double in taxes at the pump as the oil company does in profit. Who is robbing us again? Stirring up class envy against "big oil" isn't anything but politics.

Just because off shore drilling happens near the United States doesn't mean the US or its people benefit from it. Oil companies are multinationals -- they sell their product to the highest bidder. They all promised "fiscal conservatism" in addition to their moralism. They completely failed on both fronts, whether they were old school or not. Real conservatives would have significantly reduced government and found a way to finance their immoral war without leaving it up to the next generation.

My previous comment proves how much damage the current administration and it's roots have done to the concept of and party based on Conservatism. I saw "Conservative" and processed "Neo-Conservative". And I used to be a Republican, of that older sense.
